EPS Files Do Not With Correct Parent Application

I already posted this question in the Install & Setup Forum on April 3. But no response since then. I also posted this question on the Adobe Forum. So far no response there either.
I am hoping someone in this Using Mac OS X Tiger forum might be able to shed some light on the problem.
I am running Adobe Creative Suite 2 under Mac OS 10.4.6.
Lately, I have been unable to open any EPS files under the correct Adobe parent application.
It started out with when I double-clicked on any Illustrator EPS file, it launches Adobe Photoshop.
I ran the usual Mac OS X maintenance (Repair Permissions, purged caches and specific preference files, ran crons, etc.). No change,
Next, I did a "Get Info" on a Illustrator EPS file, select "Open with" Illustrator and did a "Change All..."
Now Illustrator EPS files will open under Illustrator. But now when I double click on any Photoshop EPS file it launches Illustrator.
Someone suggested modifying the preferences in the Adobe Bridge application. No change.
I then deleted the Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop folder with any associated files and re-installed just those application. Still no change.
I would rather not do the control-click option every time I need to open an EPS under the correct application.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

Kevin wrote: "In Cocktail they have a setting that just says Rebuild Launch Services database. I should write them and find out exactly what that does."It's described in Cocktail Help: in Cocktail, select Help > Cocktail Help > System. Read under Misc.
What's unclear from the description therein is if Cocktail deletes both the caches and the user's preference, just the caches, or just the user's preference.
I don't know what the script does that Francine cited: I've never looked at it.
I recommend the manual approach in my FAQ as it is very conservative, especially if you have defined a large number of user-specfied bindings, i.e. where you've specified certain documents or document types should open in a given application, known as a binding. Those are saved in the preference and can take a good bit of time to recreate if you've defined many of your own bindings.
Trashing the appropriate cache files, per my FAQ, is usually sufficient, but if that doesn't work, then one must nuke the caches and preference. Hence the approach in my FAQ.
Good luck!

  • EPS Files Do Not Open Correctly

When I double click on "any" type of EPS file it will not launch the appropriate/correct application.
For instance, if I double click on a Photoshop (pixel-based) EPS file, it launches Adobe Illustrator.
And if I "Get Info" on that EPS file and tell it to "Open with: Photoshop" and select the "Change All..." button then the reverse happens.
Now, even though pixel-based EPS files will now correctly under Photoshop, any vector-based EPS files will open up under Photoshop also instead of Illustrator.
I first checked with the Adobe and Photshop User forums and so far I have not found a solution to this problem. I am wondering if it is a Mac OS X issue?
I have already tried trashing the Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator preference files, running the OnyX utility (Repair Permissions, Optimize System, Execute Maintenance Scripts, and Reset Links between documents and applications).
    Power Mac G5 / 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I think the underlying cause of the problem is the change Apple has made in how Launch Services is identifying these files in Tiger.
An Illustrator EPS file most likely has a creator code of 'ART5', a file type of 'EPSF', and a filename extension of ".eps". A Photoshop EPS file has a creator code of '8BIM', a file type of 'EPSF' (same as an Illy EPS), and a filename extension of ".eps" (again, same as an Illy EPS).
Prior to OS X 10.4, Launch Services would consider an Illustrator EPS file to be different from a Photoshop EPS file because of the different creator codes on the file. (While we know that they are different based on the type of data they contain (i.e. vector vs. raster), Launch Services doesn't really know anything about the content of the files; it only looks at the file properties to make its decisions). Since they were different, you could choose to have one open in Illustrator and the other open in Photoshop.
In OS X 10.4, Apple changed some things around. Prior to 10.4, a combination of a file's creator code, file type, and filename extension were mapped to a particular application that would open it. In 10.4, the file's creator code, file type, and filename extension aren't mapped directly to an application, but to an intermediary called a "Uniform Type Identifier" (UTI). It's the UTI then that is mapped to an application that will open it. The UTI for an EPS file is the string "com.adobe.encapsulated- postscript". Launch Services doesn't really distinguish between an Illustrator "com.adobe.encapsulated- postscript" file or a Photoshop "com.adobe.encapsulated- postscript" file. So, what happens is that both an Illustrator EPS file (creator code 'ART5', file type 'EPSF', filename extension ".eps") and a Photoshop EPS file (creator code '8BIM', file type 'EPSF', filename extension ".eps") are mapped to the same UTI type, "com.adobe.encapsulated- postscript", which itself can be globally mapped to only one application. In other words, globally either Illustrator or Photoshop, but not both. While not ideal, files do support a per-file preference setting. So if you have a global setting to open eps files in Illustrator then by default double-clicking on will, well, open them in Illustrator. If you have a Photoshop EPS file and would like to open it in Photoshop, you could use the Get Info window to choose Photoshop instead -- just don't click the Change All button. That file, from then on, should always open in Photoshop when you double click on it. (That "user override" preference is saved in the resource fork of the file so it should stay with it).
The switch to UTI's has helped simplify things quite a bit, but this is really one instance where it's counterproductive. You might want to send feedback to Apple about it.
    Hope this helps....

  • "adobe .ai or .eps file" is not a valid Win32 application

I'm on Windows XP and can't open Illustrator .AI or .EPS files by double clicking them. When I do I get the error "...is not a valid Win32 application". I must go to file>open or drag the file icon to the AI icon. I checked some other threads, but had no luck. I did try going to control panel>folder options>file types>opens with. But that did not work. Photoshop and Acrobat files open fine when I double click them.
    thanks

As I wrote many times, the best cure in such situations is to entirely delete any existing references to a file type or program from that list, then create the rules again from scratch. Nothing as refreshing as starting with a clean slate. In addition, check, whether other programs are having a hold on certain associations and/or are simply flooding your context menu with nonsense stuiff. Tools such as Nero burning software, various packer tools and a colorful array of other software have the bad habit of doing that...

  • EPS files does not render correctly in CS4 & CS5, but looks fine in CS2

    Hello,
I am experiencing rendering issues with EPS files under CS4 and CS5. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the EPS file, as the file will render correctly under CS2.
The EPS is a map of Australia, and it's the hill shading that fails to render correctly:
    CS2 (rendes correctly):
    CS4 (hill shading corruption):
    CS5 (hill shading corruption):
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    -nav.

Is it possible that you see the native AI data in CS2 because it has been embedded in the EPS? To me it very much looks this way, since the actual EPSdata never even has complete outlines in your other images. This is a strong indication that the paths were never properly segmented for EPS export to begin with...

  • When trying to open documents, getting error as File is not a valid Win32 application

    Hi,
I am trying to open a MPP by clicking on the name of the file. But I am getting the error as "path\filename.mpp is not a valid Wind32 application".
I am able to save the document and open it in MPP, but clicking on the document name is giving this error "File is not a valid Win32 application".
I have tried to repair "Microsoft Project". But still the same issue. I am using Office 2010. SharePoint site is SP 2010.
    How to fix this?
    Thanks

    Hi Ed,
I am sorry, but I could not understand that answer.
I have put that answer in the below quotes:
"You are never going to believe what I did. This is a nice ending to a very confusing situation. lol
I uninstalled Project 2007 and rebooted my laptop and reinstalled Project 2007. No Difference at all. Same thing happened. I just couldn't stop thinking about how 2007 Microsoft Office Component kept showing up in default programs. This has bugged me for days.
I went browsing in my program files. I typed in Microsoft Office Project. The only thing I found was WINPROJ. I decided to check it out. I checked it's properties, size, location, etc.. What did I have to lose at this point? I clicked on it and it went into
my default programs as Microsoft Office Project 2007. This doesn't make any sense to me. But, don't try to fix anything else if it isn't broken, right? It's working and I am so relieved. I mean, YAAAAY!!! Another mystery solved...
Thanks for hanging in there with me to help solve this mystery. You have been of great assistance to me. You made me think outside the box and it worked.
    Laura"
Does it mean MPP Should be a 2007 version?
    Thanks

  • Printing from web pages is excruciatingly slow with most recent upgrades of Firefox .Use an iMac and an HP officejet printer. Printer works fine with Safari and woodprocessed files, but not with Firefox and web pages.

Printing from web pages is excruciatingly slow since downloading most recent upgrades of Firefox Mozilla. I have a desktop iMac, OS 10.6.8, and an HP officejet printer 4500 G510n. The printer works fine with the Safari Browser and with woodprocessed files, but not with Firefox and web pages. Help please! It used to print fast with earlier versions of Firefox.

Hello and welcome to the Apple Discussions Forum.
I have hardly any experience with HP printers but since your posting has not been replied to yet I thought I'd offer some assistance.
With the printer status and ink levels working, it shows that you have a connection to the printer. So I would look at the issue being with the protocol being used for the print queue on the Mac.
Since you have XP and Vista working, I would check the printer queue configuration on either box. In XP, go to the Properties and select Ports. Click the Configure Port tab to view the connection. If you are using RAW, then this is known as HP Jetdirect-Socket on OS X. So if you are not sure what protocol was used before I would create another printer queue, this time selecting IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket. Then enter your IP address and select the K5400dn from the Print Using menu.
If this still fails to print then please reply. There may be limitations with adding the HP driver this way that I am not aware of. There may also be other driver options you can look at, such as HPIJS. If Greg Sahli reads this posting he has expert knowledge on this matter and will be able to offer some guidance.

  • File associations not working correctly in Firefox

    Hi,
I'm using Firefox 3.5.3 on KDE 4.3.2 and have configured Firefox to open files with the "xdg-open" tool. That way you should be able to double-click on files in the download list to open them directly.
However, Firefox does not use the preferred applications I have chosen in KDE to open a specific type of file. For example it opens whaawmp instead of smplayer for video files.
When I run xdg-open from a terminal it opens the correct application. Maybe it uses Gnome settings when invoked by Firefox?
How can I fix this, so that Firefox uses my KDE file-type settings?

I don't know how to import the KDE mime-types into Firefox but...
You can change the incorrect associations for filetypes from within Firefox -- from the menu bar select 'Edit > Preferences > Applications'.  Choose the 'Content Type' you wish to change by clicking on it and a dropdown box will appear in the next column.  Then just pick the appropriate program or action.

  • Adobe Illustrator file will not display correctly when logged in as a user

I am working with an Adobe Illustrator CS2 file that will open and display correctly if I log in as Administrator, but will not display correctly if I am logged on as a user. The error message is that there is not enough memory to display the file correctly and I am forced into preview mode. The user Home folder is on a server. Other than this, I have made certain that the criteria for opening the file match under both interfaces. I have opened the AI CS2 file on other Macs and it opens fine. I conclude that the problem is with the user Home folder, but beyond that, I'm stumped. Any help will be appreciated.

  • .eps file can not be converted to PDF file?

I am a 1st grade teacher and I sometimes use clip art in papers that I make for the kids. I get most of my clip art from a company called DJ Inkers. When I switched to a Mac recently, I started to install the clip art which is in .eps format. Most of it works, but when I tried to open the file for a couple of the CD's or use it in Pages, a window would pop up and say that the file could not be converted to a PDF file. Normally I would assume there was something wrong with the CD, but it worked fine on my Windows, the CD said it was compatible with Mac, and most of the other CD's worked. Does anyone have any clue why this is, or what I could do to fix it?

Maybe so, but eps is stuck in 1993 also. She did mention Pages, I assumed that was the program she was trying to open them with.
All I can say is, if preview won't work, then use Gimp or shell out some bucks for some adobe product, unless someone comes up with a better suggestion.

  • EDGE file will not run correctly in DPS! Any ideas on what I might do?

I have built an EDGE file to the size of a full page iPad layout (1024 X 768), with a few elements that animate. I have set it up correctly, and, published to "Animate Deployment Package. However, when it plays in DPS, there is a hesitation (or delay), then, a white - stop in the action - then the animation plays fine. I have not coded in delays or stops.
    I am not a coder.
I have done a number of tests with a variety of "Poster" images, but, I still get the play "Hesitation" (of delay).
Can you let me know what I'm not doing correctly?
    Thank you!

I think I know what your talking about.
Try these steps.  First in Indesign set your animation to auto play and set a delay for 0.125.  I have been talking with Adobe and they are going to set a guideline to always have a 0.125 delay for animations created with Edge.  Second, make sure you check "Transparent Background" and "Scale Content to Fit".  The good thing here is that it's full screen and set at the 1024.
Make sure you also set a poster image in Edge so you don't get the blank image before it starts playing on the iPad.  One other thing.  Becasue the animations are basically controlled by Safari on the iPad you may see a delay longer than the 1/8 of second you set.  I attribute this to the iPad having to load it up on demand before it plays.
    Hope this helps.
    Ryan.

  • Swf files do not load correctly anymore...

I maintain a site with many online  tutorials (www.edutorials.gr) that i record with various desktop recording software and export them in swf format. The last few months some of these tutorials do not load correctly, and freeze after few seconds.
These swf tutorials originally played ok (Few months ago)
The other swf tutorials continue to play ok
I used the same software for recording and exporting in swf format most of the tutorials for the site
I have tried to open the problematic swf files with various browsers and flash players (both on line and locally in my pc) and they always behave the same
Here is (http://edutorials.gr/drupal-admin-settings1) a swf file that freezes and
Here is (http://edutorials.gr/gimp-fire-smoke) another one that continues to behave ok
Any ideas why this happens? I don't have a clue

Maybe the .swf files have become corrupted. Have you tried replacing the files on the server? If you pull the file from the server and play it locally does it play correctly?

  • Offline Files Do Not Sync Correctly or Show Error

I have a problem with files not syncing correctly and not showing errors.  The client station is running Windows 7 Professional Version 6.1 Build 7601: Service Pack 1).  A clear example of the problem is listed below:
On January 9 the laptop was connected to the server with the shared folder.  Three files in that folder were open (in Notepad) on another computer running Windows XP.  That computer does not have offline access setup for any folders.
After the files were closed on the Windows XP computer, the Windows 7 computer was shut down and physically disconnected from the network.
On January 10 I was working offline with the Windows 7 computer and noticed that the files did not include the changes made on January 9.  Since the changes were minor, I was not concerned and continued working offline for several days.
When I returned to the office on January 20, I reconnected to the network and opened the Sync Center expecting to see sync errors for the files in question, instead the conflict Window showed "There are currently no sync conflicts."
When I attempted to open the files, I found they were the version saved from the Windows XP computer on January 9.  I quickly disconnected the Windows 7 computer from the network and was able to find the offline version of the files in the \Windows\CSC
directory and copied them to another location.
What causes this error and what steps can I take to ensure all sync problems are displayed, instead of having the system revert to out of date files without warning me?
    Thanks for your help

    Hi,
I noticed that when the files finished on Windows XP PC, Windows 7 PC is not connected to the network, and Windows 7 PC was stayed offline(No connection to the network folder) until January 20,
    right?
If I understand correctly, the files on Windows 7 PC have no connections to perform a sync. On Windows 7,
Background Sync runs at regular intervals as a background task to automatically synchronize and reconcile changes between the client computer and the server. IT administrators can configure synchronization intervals and block out times. With
this feature, users no longer must worry about manually synchronizing their data with the server when working offline.
More details, please check the below MS articles:

  • Database file views not working correctly

I have recently set up an Access database on my local
coldfusion server. When I go to the application panel and go to the
'databases' tab, I can see a list of my databases just fine. The
problem is that, when I open the individual tables of a database
I've created, the files show up as the path to the file and not the
file name as it normally should. For example, I'm working through a
lynda.com tutorial and have build a database called 'teacloud'.
When I open the teacloud tables in Dreamweaver, they should show
the individual names of the tables, like the following:
    Products
    ProductTypes
    Reviews
    Users
    UserTypes
    Instead, I get the following:
    C:\CFusionMX7\wwwroot\database\teacloud.Products
    C:\CFusionMX7\wwwroot\database\teacloud.ProductTypes
    C:\CFusionMX7\wwwroot\database\teacloud.Reviews
    C:\CFusionMX7\wwwroot\database\teacloud.Users
    C:\CFusionMX7\wwwroot\database\teacloud.UserTypes
How do I get rid of the file path structure to where
Dreamweaver simply shows the Table name only? This is very
annoying, as it prevents me from being able to see the individual
table names in many of the functions within Dreamweaver.

The problem was introduced during the CF 7.01 update. I
    understand that the
    7.02 update fixes the issue.
