EPS font not previewing in Indesign CS5 overprint view

Hi,
After importing an eps logo into Indesign CS5 it previews fine when Overprint Preview is turned off, but when overprint view is turned on only the logo icon appears, the font disappears.
The font has been outlined - the logo is solid white and appearing on a solid black background. When exporting the file to pdf the font also disappears. I have tried saving the file as an AI file with the same result.
Any ideas?

First of all you should be using native Illustrator .ai files with PDF compatibility turned on (this shows up in the options dialogue after you save).
Your logo was converted from artwork originally done in black with the Overprint Fill attribute turned on. Overprint tells the output device not to know out the colour below the logo. When printing black, this makes sense. When printing white, this effectively makes the logo vanish, since the only way to print white is by knocking out.
Open the logo in Illustrator and select all the vanishing white artwork (probably a Select All will do). Open the Attributes panel and turn off Overprint Fill. Save as an Illustrator file and place that.

  • Euclid Symbol Bold and Italic fonts not working in Indesign CS5

    Hi I created some Maths Text books about 5 years ago in an older Adobe Indesign program. I now have to re-edit the files using Indesign CS5.
    The Euclid Symbol Bold and Italic fonts i used back in 2005 now do not display in Indesign 5 when i open up the program. The other Euclid Symbol Fonts do. I think that they are all truefonts.
    I have attached an example.
    I am using a Mac running OSX 10.6.8.

    Congratulations on fixing the problem yourself! Hopefully our article (to which you linked) was of some help in that process. Let us know if you need anything else.

  • Many of the fonts on my PC are not available in InDesign CS5.5?

    Hi
    I am using a font called Narkisim in FW but it is not available in my InDesign CS5.5. I have checked the 'font' folder for InDesign and actually its empty, though the preset standard fonts are all there.
    Really not sure whats going on here, please help? I really need to use Narkisim for this print job that I'm doing.
    I appreciate the help.
    Ash

    FW = FireWorks, I imagine.....
    Is the font installed in one of the system font locations on a Mac or the System fonts folder on PC? If not it must be installed there, or in the Adobe common fonts folder, or ID's own private fonts folder to be seen by ID. If it is installed in a palce ID can see it, make sure you scroll through the whole font list. Some fonts are classified in odd ways and may be out of order alphabetically or included in one of the non-roman groups near the bottom of the list (In fact, Narkism seems to be a Hebrew font, so it should be listed near the bottom with other Hebrew fonts).
    If you still can't find it, that may indicate that the font doesn't come up to the standards ID needs (it seems to be about 20 years old). ID is far more sensitive to imporper or bad font formatting than other applications.

  • Bridge not previewing full InDesign spread

    I am having a problem with Bridge not previewing the will Indesign spread, it only shows the first page, is there a fix?

    The answer is no. Sadly Adobe cancelled the spread preview with CS5. InDesign saves only single page previews into the indd-file. Actually I discuss this topic in the InDesign forum because imho its a preview image issue of InDesign (fron CS5 till now). Perhaps you can tell your story over there. I think the moderator there thinks that its just me wanting the spread view in Bridge.

  • Cross reference or hyperlinking not working for InDesign CS5 Book to ePub

    I cannot get hyperlinks or cross reference links to work when generating an ePub from InDesign CS5. (7.0.0.355, Mac OS 10.6.2)
    Here's how to recreate a simple test demonstrating the issue.
    1. Create a new InDesign Book (File -> New -> Book)
    2. Create document one (File -> New -> Document)
    3. Create a text box and type "Table of Contents"
    4. Create document two (File -> New -> Document)
    5. Create a text box in it and type "Story One"
    6. Create a new paragraph style and assign it to the Story One text
    7. Save document 2. I just kept the name Untitled-2.xhtml
    8. Back in document 1, add a cross-reference and select document 2, the style you created, and then "Story One". "Story One" should now appear under the previously typed Table of Contents text, and when highlighed, should show it is an active cross reference in the Hyperlinks panel.
    9. Save document 1. I just kept the name Untitled-1.xhtml
    10. Add both documents to the Book and save the book.
    11. From the Book panel, select Export Book to EPUB...
    12. Save the epub file and open it in Adobe Digital Editions.
    Note that the text "Story One" appears as a hyperlink but when clicked does not switch to the document 2. It does nothing apparent when clicked.
    Looking at the XHTML source for the first document, it is immediately evident why. The filename for document 2.thml is missing.  It looks like this: <a href="#anchor-anchor">
    When it should be : <a href="Untitled-2.xhtml#anchor-anchor">
    The same thing works if you create a hyperlink instead of a cross reference.
    I note then when I use the option to go to the destinate reference in the Cross Link (hyperlink) panel, it does switch to the second InDesign docuemtn. So the cross reference is functioning (in InDesign). But the link is broken in the ePub for the above mentioned reason.
    Bug? Something I'm overlooking?
    Entire source of Untitled-1.xhtml:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <title>Untitled-1.xhtml</title>
    <link href="template.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    </head>
    <body>
    <div id="untitled-1">
    <div class="generated-style">
    <p class="basic-paragraph" xml:lang='en-us'><span class="no-style-override">Table of Contents</span></p>
    <p class="basic-paragraph" xml:lang='en-us'><span class="no-style-override"><a href="#anchor-anchor">“story one”</a></span></p>
    </div>
    </div>
    </body>
    </html>

    As far as I can tell, it has NOT yet been fixed in CS5.5.  I'm having the same problem.  I have about 90 hyperlinks to fix.
    And the explanation that Teus Dejong gives indicates it's not going to be that helpful:  "we have found that only the links in documents split by the CS5 exporter will be fixed. For books the script does only work for references to earlier documents in the book, not for forward references. This means in practice that for most books the script will not repair the links and should be seen as a means to add the year only. At the moment I see no way to repair this, because the book epub output of InDesign does not contain sufficient information to repair links referencing forward to others documents in a book."
    It's pretty discouraging.

  • 'Package' command not working in Indesign CS5.5

    Hi Everyone. I am using Indesign CS5.5, and cannot create a 'Package' folder that collects all fonts and graphic assets used in a document I am working on. Using File>Package, the progress bar hurries through very quickly (way too quickly for a 80Mb file!) and the resulting 'Package ' folder is empty - no fonts, no images!
    Has anyone else experienced this? And did they solve the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    IDML never contains the images. It contains references to the images.
    The images aren't altered. The person who sent the file to you needs to relink the images to the InDesign file in the Links panel.

  • MenuActions not enabling in InDesign CS5.5

    Hi Scripters,
    InDesign CS4/CS5 is able to invoke menuActions using the below mentioned javascript code.
    var myMenuAction = app.menuActions.item("$ID/Go to Item");
    try {
        myMenuAction.invoke();
        }catch (err){exit();};
    However when I use the same code in InDesign CS5.5 version, we are encountering  "Action not enabled" error.
    Note: Please select the required XML element from the Structure Panel before running this code.
    Thanks & Regards
    csm_phil

    A related issue, perhaps.  I am trying to toggle Menu options via script, to set a user environment.  To make sure that Window->Tools is checked, this always works:
    try {
         var myTools = app.menuActions.item("Tools").checked;
         catch (e) {}
    if (myTools ==false) {
        try {
         app.menuActions.item("Tools").invoke();
         catch (e) {}
    But I also want to toggle things that lack a checkmark, such as Hide Hidden Characters.
    This returns different results depending on whether a document is open, and sometimes does not toggle the selection (Show/Hide) and returns different values for the .checked call.
    try {
         var myHidden = app.menuActions.item("Hide Hidden Characters").checked;
         catch (e) {alert("Error"); }
      if (myHidden ==false ) {
         try {
          app.menuActions.item("Hide Hidden Characters").invoke();
         catch(e) {}
    Sometimes this returns false, sometimes undefined.  I have done many iterations, also looking for ("Show Hidden Characters").checked
    The original code was written for InCopy.  Any menu item that is truly checked is easily controlled.  The ones that toggle Show/Hide are a mess in both InCopy and InDesign.
    Am I using the wrong syntax?

  • How do I fix a problem with .eps files not showing up properly in icon view

    Actually my .eps files are not showing properly in any of the views but icon view is most important to me.  I am using OSX.8.5 on a mac mini and mac book air.  Almost all of my .eps files are conversions of .wmf files converted to .eps by WMF Converter software.  All of these files used to be on a PC running windows Vista using ST Thumbnails explorer to be able to view thumbnails.  For background info: I had to use a program to view the WMF files becasue hackers could put viruses into the thumbnail for WMF fies so instead of fixing the problem Microsoft disabled the thumbnail view for all WMF files.
    A few of my .eps files are conversions of files created in CorelDraw 3x and converted to .eps in CorelDraw 3x.  Both types of .eps files misbehave the same.
    I downloaded one .eps file today from the internet to see if it would misbehave the same way (it does).
    Here is the problem: After a reboot when I first view a folder that contains .eps files in icon view I can see the file contents fine.  If I use the resize slider at the bottom of the window or resize the window itself then some or all of my .eps files revert to displaying the "generic icon" of a Loupe with a picture behind it.  If i can manage to put the resize slider to exactly where it was then my icons display the file contents as they did before I messed with the slider.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when an icon will display as the file contents or when the generic icon comes up.  In some folders all the icons display correctly at the smallest icon size and in other folders the icons may display correctly or as only generic or a mix of generic and file contents.  Icons to files that came from the same source will not necessarily display the same way.  Icons to files that came from the same source and were converted by WMF Converter at the same minute do not necessarily display the same way.  If I display "info" for the files sometimes the previev pane of the info box will display the generic icon or sometimes it will show the file contents.  If I take an .eps icon that displays properly and drop it into a folder where all .eps icons are displayed as generic then that icon displays generic.  When I move that same icon out of that folder then it will display properly.  Icon view, list view, column view and cover flow view all display differently with no discernable pattern.  Sometimes I can see file contents in column view and not icon view.  Sometimes in cover flow and not in icon view.  It makes no difference if I have a handful of .eps files in a folder or hundereds of files in a folder.  After an undetermined amount of time the icons might display properly again or maybe not.
    What I have done so far:  exhaustive search of the internet did not find anyone else with the same issue.  I checked and fixed all disk permission errors that disk utilities would fix.  I know that icon view and quick look are two different things, but, I did however, download and install an eps quicklook plugin that did not seem to make a difference for my issue.  BTW Quick look sometimes works and sometimes not (no discernable pattern to this behavior either).  I tried the cnet download fix for quicklook just for grins.  It had me force QL to reload plugins and it's cache then I cleared out the QL configuration files.  This did not seem to make a difference in the behavior of icon view or Quicklook.  The only two things I have found to be consistant are 1)  The "open with preview" always works but I know this is different because this preview actually generates a pdf view of the file. 2) When the icon does display the file contents it always displays correctly.
    When you read this please be mindful of:  I am a Microsoft refugee not yet familiar with the Apple world so you may have to tell me how to do "simple" things.  I have no idea what is the difference between a "thumbnail" or a "preview" or the behind the scenes way that apple generates the icon appearance for the 4 different views.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I tried to insert a screen shot but got an error message when I did it.

    Was the error number really 0XE8....

  • Linked .eps files cause error in InDesign CS5

    I upgraded to CS5 about 2 weeks ago and all is well except:
    In 2 files so far, some (but not all) of the links to .eps files (within anchored image frames) show up as gray rectangles with crossed diagonal lines. In addition, I get the following error message in a pop-up box:
    "Error encountered while reading TIFF image. Image may be damaged or incompatible. Resave the image with different settings and try again."
    I was able to make one graphic reappear correctly (at least for now) by opening the .eps file in AI CS3 (the latest I have), resaving it as a .ai file and doing a new Place. Is this the best way to resolve this issue for the several dozen .eps files? Or is there something else easier I should try?
    Any ideas what's causing this issue? Is it maybe a known bug?
    Thanks,
    John
    PS: The .eps files were created with 3rd party software (Sibelius music notation software), but I've never before (CS3 and CS4) had a problem.

    I did NOT move the .eps files across a network (except that I have two computers in the same room and move files between them via an Ethernet hub in a Windows workgroup, but I assume you're referring to a LAN, which this is not).
    Of course an Ethernet hub is a LAN! Absolutely! (LAN is a local area network.)
    It's certainly a good idea to check to make sure the files are still the same, but if they still open in Illustrator, then they should work in InDesign.
    (Moving files across networks, LANs or the Internet or what-have-you, should not corrupt them. But stranger things have happened.)
    Also, you mention "tiny" PDFs...what? Generally speaking the PDFs should not be all that different in size from the eps files,
    though it's possible for them to be both larger and smaller, depending. But why do you say "tiny"? I wonder if this may give us a hint about your problem.
    Still, though, I wonder what I asked initially...can you boil this problem down to a small reproducible test case?

  • Fonts not showing in InDesign CS6

    Hi there,
    I've seen a similar question to this before through a Google search and I tried the advice listed such as placing the affected fonts in: C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe\InDesign CS6\Fonts; as well as searching for fonts with a **after its name.  Doesn't work.  The files originated in CS5 and pops up saying there are two missing links (fonts) which are Avenir Book and Avenir Black.  I've done the "Find Font" and the only one that shows is Avenir Book.  Avenir Black isn't even there, even after re-installing and relocating to the new folder.  Secondly, even after I save the file after "finding" Avenir Book, upon re-opening it still says it's missing.  Is there anything else I can try-short of uninstalling InDesign CS6 (I still have CS5 installed)?  Also, I'm not that familiar with InDesign, it isn't a program I use much.
    Thanks!

    Is this the same computer where the files started out in CS5?
    There are probably quite a few different cuts of Avenir (certainly over the years it has been available as TT and T1 in both Windows and Mac formats, and I have an OpenType version here from Linotype). Some possibilities for why CS6 might not see a font are that you have installed a different version, you have more than one version installed or it is installed in more than one location, or that it is looking at a different internal name in CS6. Typically, if the fonts are showing as missing, but are, in fact installed, using Find Font and substituting the same font will solve the problem.

  • Why are some PDF files created in Photoshop not placing in InDesign CS5?

    We are publishers and have used InDesign for over 9 years to create 36+ magazine issues per year.  We are currently using CS5 on 8 MAC stations using OS X Vers 10.8.5.  We are experiencing difficulty placing some supplied PDF files into InDesign documents lately.    We get the following error message when placing the offending PDF file:  "FAILED TO OPEN PDF FILE"
    This is a new error message that has cropped up the last two months or so.   In Acrobat, the file will pre-flight without errors.  The files giving us the errors can be converted to Photoshop PSD, EPS or TIFF files and will place just fine.  Photoshop PDF files, however, will result in the error.
    Can anyone give me an idea what might be causing this issue?  Thanks in advance!

  • Fonts not showing in inDesign

    A am using (in two different offices) Extensis Fusion 3 and Universal Type Server 3 (UTS) and both are having the same issue. I am on Windows 7, 64bit with Adobe CS5 with Adobe font collection. All licenced and legit versions.
    This issue has been happening for a couple years and I have finally had enough and need it resolved. Computers have come and gone, fresh installs etc etc but we are still having the same issues.
    Randomly sometimes Indesign is not showing activated fonts in indesign. This usually happens with Helvetica Neue Light 45 for some reason but can happen to other fonts, usually the ones we need at the time.
    The most recent case is that we cannot get the fonts we need (although activated) and we can see other fonts that are not activated?
    Has anyone experienced this before?

    Sorry that you're having issues with activation. Could you please contact support directly to diagnose the issue? It could be an issue with the font itself, and could benefit from inspection.

  • Computer font not availabel in InDesign

    I have a font that is showing up in Photoshop but not InDesign.  In Font Book it lists the font as though it is at the computer level. Why does it not show up in both?  How do I get it into InDesign?  (CS4 on Mac)

    On any Library level the font should be accessible for all applications. If you want to get it quickly there for InDesign just reveal the font and copy it to InDesign's fonts folder. A soothing reboot may also be the ticket if you don't want to go that route. A restart of InDesign is mandatory for fonts placed in it's folder to become availble.
    There is also the possibility that it is in InDesign but under a different name than Photoschlop. Check under ITC in addition to Avante Garde. May just be a quirk in the system.
    Also, not sure how serious Font Book's activation is. I am under the impression it doesn't handle activation via injection like most of the font managers. I think it is more of a dumb copy routine rather than the memory endangering goodness that we enjoy with Suitcase or Linotype's FEX.

    Have been using CS6 and tried to migrate to trial of Creative Cloud but InDesign doesnt recognise the Minion Pro font in the docs I have created. Can I get it in Creative Cloud? Thanks.

    I'm having this same problem. I just upgraded from CS6 to CC, and Minion Pro isn't showing up in InDesign. How'd you fix it? What did you update? All CC apps are updated, but I'm still not seeing it. I even reinstalled Minion Pro from a backup, but I still can't get it to display. Any ideas?
