EPS Graphic with transparent bkgd placed over shape: IDCS3

In Photoshop CS3 I created a graphic of a basketball player and masked him out. I then deleted the mask, leaving me with just the player. I now have a document that is 8x10", 300 dpi, with a transparent background. I flattened it and saved it as a Photoshop EPS.
In InDesign CS3 I created a shape layer.
I then created a graphics frame and placed my graphic with transparent bkgd in it.
I arranged the layers so that my graphics layer is directly above my shape layer.
Why isn't the background of the graphics layer transparent? It does not let the shape show through.
I tried this technique:
Object>Clipping Path>Options>Detect Edges = This is roughly what I want, but the edges are ragged.
What is this technique called that I am trying to perform? I can't decide on the vocab. to use to navigate through the help menus or forum topics here.
Thank you.

^ Just a quick note on #2 that transparency *effects* (as in 50% opacity) are not supported. However, simple background transparency should be.
The Photoshop trip is probably your culprit as noted by OldBob, but whenever you work with EPS, you should also set your import options for EPS graphics to "Raster preview from postscript" (or whatever the "from postscript" option is called). Without that option, drop shadows will generate around the bounding box not the shape of the EPS object. Not sure whether the background will be correctly transparent either.

I've created a monitor graphic in Fireworks that looks like iMac and I would like to export it with transparent background.
the jpeg format looks great with no damage to the graphic at all but I can't have transparent background, although I changed the canvas fill to none. the png-8 format can apply transparent background, but damages the graphic.
    Here are the previews

  • Need help creating smooth graphic with transparency for web use

I have created a logo that is mostly white with white text and will appear over a textured background image. The logo contains text that I've converted to outlines. I've tried saving it as both a .gif and a .png, but when it's imported into iWeb, the outline of the graphic looks jagged and rastered. When viewed in Photoshop, it looks OK as a .png, but not great as the .gif.
I've tried saving it out as RGB, indexed color and greyscale, using PhotoShops "save for web" function or just saving it as 72dpi myself. I don't know how to get the edges to remain smooth. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you J - here's the weird thing. I actually HAD saved it as a PNG24, and it looked fine on my machine. When I sent it to my client, who used it on his iWeb page, it looks jagged.
After I got your answer, I went to his iWeb page and downloaded the same background image he's using and imported it into a Dreamweaver page on my machine, and placed the same PNG logo over top - it looks as crisp and clean as a whistle. I have to assume that something's happening when he imports it into iWeb. Since I know zero about iWeb, I guess I will have to post another question on their forum, unless anyone knows what could be causing this.

  • Importing a graphic with transparent background

I have a graphic that has a transparent background in Photoshop. When I import it into Indesign, it has a white background. Is there a way to keep the transparent background when importing?

A quick test shows it works perfectly for me. Created a regular Photoshop document, transparent background, some text on an otherwise empty layer. Saved as PSD. Placed into InDesign CS4. Transparency all around.
Did you, by any chance, not use the proper import ("Place") function but used copy-and-paste to get it into InDesign?

  • Masking and clip art with transparent backgrounds

I'm new to iWeb and am creating a travel blog. So far love the simplicity of it. However, when I try to add clip art type images or graphics with transparent backgrounds I always get a white border around them. I have tried to mask or crop the border out but no dice. Any help?!
Also, if anyone can recommend a good source for travel or photo related clip art let me know. The iWeb "Roadtrip" template seems to have some cute items - maps, scissors, tape, etc. - but there is not much there.
    Thanks everyone.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That's the default border for added image files. Go to the Inspector/Graphic pane and take off the frame/stroke that is added by default.
Be sure to post a request to remove that default border at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html. The more complaints the better.

  • Extract Assets with transparent spacing?

The extract assets feature has grown on me, but I'm struggling to find a way to export graphics with transparent spacing.
For instance, I have a graphic that needs to be a 100x100px PNG but the actual artwork only takes up 80x80px with the rest of the transparent pixels acting as spacing. The extract asset setting automatically crops the PNG to 80x80 when saving, ignoring the transparent space that I do actually need.
Been struggling with finding a way to set transparency to export, seems like I'm missing something simple. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Ran into the same issue myself earlier today.  Here's a fix/workaround/solution that seems to give the ability to add transparent spacing around slices.
If you select the layer you want to add the spacing to, then draw a marquee selection around it at the final size you want then click "Add Layer Mask" it should export the asset at the size of you selection.
    Hope this helps.

  • Export with Transparent Background

I do realize this has been asked again and again.  Just making a reality check. I created a lower third. Time and time again the import into Final Cut Pro was on a solid black background instead of a transparency.
I followed every post and followed the directions - with no success.
Finally I exported my Motion lower third as a Template.  The effect appears as a Generator in Final Cut.  When I use the created Generator in my timeline the lower third has a proper transparency and works properly.
Is that really the only way to import a Motion graphic with transparent background??     Yes, I did try creating a Movie in ProRes 4444, my project does have a transparent background selected, etc.  I feel as if I am missing something.

    Much appreciated  :-)
I purchased the lower third from Videohive.  It has the basic graphic but lacks titles. While I was watching Motion tuturials, I thought I would customize the lower third with a fancy text animation.
I tried a few experiments based on what you said.  I see now.
So it appears that even though my proxy media lacks the alpha channel and does not display with a transparency, the moment I switch FCP to view Optimized/Original media, the transparency works correctly.
So I assume I can still use proxy media (if needed) and ignore the lack of transparency until my final render.  As long as I am exporting from Motion using ProRes 4444 it should work correctly.
    Does that reasoning make sense?
Looking at many posts across the internet, I think this is the very issue that has tripped up many people.
Thank you for your helpful comment. I was going nuts trying to figure it out.

  • HT4641 Importing graphics with with transparent backgrounds such as .psd or .eps

I want to use this for an art project for my sons class. Can I import .psd files with transparent backgrounds as per Word, to retain the clear cut shape/opacity of background. Or can I import .eps illustrator files with transparent backgrounds? Thanks.

If you need transparency - as I stated - you need to convert the image to GIF. PSD is a layered graphic workspace file specifically for PhotoShop; EPS can be read by more applications, but is still basically a graphic print format. It might serve your customer needs, but wouldn't be the format I would recommend for general distribution. Typically you wouldn't embed EPS in another file, it would be the container for the print ready document (and the concern for transparency would be somewhat moot).
However, I'm not familiar with the intimate details of your project or customer needs, so take that for what its worth.

  • 7mins long 1080p footage with transparency placed over webcams image

    Dear All,
I'm working on a flash project, where a 7 minutes long 25fps hd footage (at the moment as a PNG sequence) placed over a webcam's image. Importing the png sequence went all right so far, but when I'm importing the last scene (last 2000 frames) Flash crashes. I guess it's because I've run out of memory (I have 32GB).
Does anybody know a way to
A - import HQ footage with transparency (is there a codec that has alpha and works well with flash)
B - to increase an FLV's max bitrate
C - easily import a large amount of HD images (with transparency) without creating a 30+ gigabyte FLA file
    Thank you in advance!

b (It took an hour to render a 6 min song. Is this normal, even though I've such a fast processor??)
With the number and type of filters you said you've added, that length of time doesn't sound out of the ballpark.
b I then placed the widescreen mask over the top of the nest. (FCP will only allow a max of 2min worth of graphics, so I copied it 3 times to fit over the whole song)
FCP has a wide screen matte filter that can be found in the EFFECTS tab in the Browser. It works by cropping the picture and the width and border (if needed) can be varied. You just drag it and drop it on top of the clip or nest in question.
b I then placed the widescreen mask over the top of the nest. I didn't have to render the mask and it played back fine. Unfortunately at each point where the mask met it caused a jump in frame on the nested track below.
You may have been able tyo watch the effect in real time, but it still needs rendering to play back 100% properly. The jumps you were seeing were most likely artifacts of RT viewing and would most likely have not been there after a COMPLETE render.
b A friend of mine has suggested exporting a Quick Time ref clip (not self contained) then importing it back into FCP.
This is one way of working and consolidants everything into one file. As long as you import this into a new sequence and keep your original, you can still rebuild anything you want by going back to the original sequence.
Finally, If you are doing any colour correction at all, you should be looking at a properly setup broadcast monitor to see what you are doing. Using the computer screen as a reference for colour is going to leave you very dissapointed when you view the final output on a television screen.
    Good Luck

  • Text wrap with EPS graphic files

I'm using ID CS3 v5 with Mac OS Leopard 10.5.6.
I am trying to use the TEXTWRAP panel with an EPS graphic that has been imported into the text.
When I select the graphic and go to the text wrap panel none of the options are available to me - if I hover the cursor over any of the 5 options it changes to a NO ENTRY sign.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I too am trying to get various InLine (graphic) objects…
-- to flow with text (got it!), AND
-- have surrounding text wrap around them as they move (no luck so far).
It seems like this should be easy, but I too have failed to be able to figure it out.
I do know that objects that are NOT inline can easily have text flow around them, but I'm sure hoping that InLine objects can too.
Can anyone tell me (us) if InDesign can do what I'm/we're asking, and if so, HOW?
I'm using ID CS4 on a G5 iMac running Tiger.
Thanks in advance for any replies!

  • How do I transfer a .psd file to illustrator that can then be placed in Muse as a .svg with transparent background?

I just wrote all this up in another thread.  I did not realize at the time that the last post was in 2014, so I'm giving it a go here.
I am currently trying to create an .svg using Photoshop .psd file (with layers in tact).  I'm new to these products so it may be obvious to others that the above intention was to eventually place the .svg in some sort of website creation software such as Muse.  Which is precisely what I am attempting. However, I am getting a white background once I place or copy and paste into Muse.  My starting .psd has a transparent background without any hidden layers causing this problem.  To test this I placed the .psd file into Muse and it still has a transparent background.  However when opening or placing this file into illustrator, it picks up a white background. If I do exactly as described above, I still get the same result.  So far I have tried:
    1) Simple copy and paste from Photoshop .svg to illustrator to Muse.  Result - white background.
    2) Placing the .psd in illustrator, then placing the .svg file in muse.  Result - white background.
    4) I have also tried the every combination of 1 and 2. - Result - white background.
    3) I have now created a path in Photoshop from the text layer to yet again attempt the above methods.  Result - white background.
I'm including an image of the object I am trying to place with transparent background, but I have both a flattened rasterized version, a version complete with layers and a third (.svg) with the corresponding objects.  I am completely new to Illustrator as of today so any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
Link to .psd file "Welcome text"

I was having some difficulties getting the correct dimensions of one of my objects, I eventually solved this problem without using svg.  It was pretty simple when I stopped trying to over complicate things.  I just linked the object to a near by object in photoshop, merged and placed it all as one.  It looks great now.  Thanks for your reply.  You are correct, SVG was not the answer.

  • How does one deal with transparency in a placed file in InDesign?

I suppose this may seem elementary, but I'm relatively new to it so here goes:
First off, my print shop says that placed images should be in EPS format. I'm creating my files in Illustrator and some of them use a gradient mask to fade an object away. When saved as an EPS, the gradient mask shows as a white box instead of fading into the background. When I copy/paste my Illustrator image into a new Photoshop file, save it as a PSD, bring that PSD into Illustrator and save it as an EPS, the whole file is in a white box.
Example. I want those aisle markers to not be in white boxes.

How does one deal with transparency in a placed image in InDesign?
    Thanks.

If possible, one finds a new printer who can handle your files properly and doesn't insist on .eps.
What format are you delivering to the Printer? If it's anything other than PDF (and that's at their request) all the more reason to reread the first sentence. Why on earth are you moving things from Illustrator to Photoshop and back to Illustrator? Either one of those will save as .eps (ugh), though you need to use a clipping path for transparent areas coming out of photoshop (don't really know how Illy handles it when you say to save .eps with transparent background), but you are FAR better off with either native .AI or .PSD, both of which support transparencey, unlike .eps.If yo are delivering PDF, as you should be, it makes no difference to the printer what format the placed content uses (and it shouldn't matter to him even with native files unless he's hopelessly stuck in the 90s).
In any event, when importing from Illustrator, make sure to show the import options and check the transparent background box.

  • Can placed black eps graphics be separated as spot color in ID?

I have a 400 plus page catalog that has all kinds of product images in it. Most are bitmaps or tifs that already have a spot color assigned to them. However there are several placed eps graphics that have been created in Illustrator and are black. I would like to make these black eps graphics print with the other spot items. Is there a way to mark them in ID for this, or do I have to make a spot color version of each one an re-place them?

If your graphics are all on separate layers from the text, you selectively toggle layers for print.
Alternatively, you could create a new black swatch for your text and change all the text in a few clicks (if your using paragraph styles).

  • InDesign 5.5 - Type with drop shadow placed in front of gray box causes "shadow box". Ditto Graphics

I exported this document from InDesign 5.5 using PDFX-4 and sent to the print service provider. The Printer's Proof showed problems in a couple of places:
    1. In InDesign, white type with a drop shadow is placed over a background box containing a placed greyscale Illustrator graphic . In the Proof, behind the type box appears a yellow-grayish shadow.
    2. In InDesign, a photo (placed greyscale Photoshop file), with a white border and drop shadow, is placed over a grey background box (CMYK). In the Proof, behind the graphic box and shadow appears a gray shadow box (lighter than the drop shadow).
The printer informed me that he doesn't have PDFX-4. I resent the job using PDFX-3(1.3). Will that solve the problem, or is there some other problem?
The printer needs to go to press, so don't have much time.

You should probably ask in the InDesign forum. Looks like everything you are doing is InDesign specific.
