Why are equally layouted embedded texts in an eps-file saved differently?
Hi everyone!
I have a problem with the LaTex package "PSfrag" which is supposed to filter out any specific embedded text of an eps-file in order to re-layout it. Obviously the programm only recognises text-tags in the output eps-file that are formatted like:
(text-tag1)sh
whereas the other text-tags are followed by further strange information like
(text-tag2)
[3.74512 3.74463 0 ]xsh
I've created the eps-files via Adobe Illustrator and I've set all texts the same way only to find that Illustrator has saved some texts in the first and others in the latter way. I would be most happy to know why that is so and how I could accomplish the )sh-ending throughout the whole eps-file for every text event so that "PSfrag" can work out well. I'd appreciate it if anyone can give help...

here's an excerpt from the eps-file. The (100) is recognised, the (10) not.

(100)shI guess it's the old gag of "appearance over structure" which also makes AI's SVG files so unworkable at times... What might be causing those differences is impossible to say without seeing the files, but it would appear you have a custom line height in your non-working example, causing it to be required to be written differently. I'm sure Gernot Hoffman can answer this more specifically...

Indesign CS5 converting spot EPS or AI files to process
I have two EPS files placed in my cover layout that are being changed to CMYK. They are using a spot colour in the EPS file but they don't show as spot in Indesign. The separations don't list them. It's hard to say if this is a problem with Illustrator or Indesign, but it's a huge problem. Saving as AI doesn't help - same thing.
it seems to me that it's a bad idea to completely override a user's colour plate simply because of similar naming. If it's not a bug, it should at least warn you very obviously that your spot colours are being overridden by an end user. At the very least, it should be flagged by Preflighting. When you work with templates that are coming from other users or companies like this, it's not clear what's been converted, since you can have something marked as a spot but not be a pantone. You're assuming that the user has controlled every stage of a document workflow, which often isn't the case.
This is really bad to leave this as is. Like I said, if I hadn't scanned our plates on pre-press, I'd have a very angry Bell Canada as a client (not for much longer), who likely wouldn't want to pay full rate. -
Illustrator CS4 - frequently generates corrupt EPS files that will not parse
I have used many versions of Illustrator prior to and including the CS lines. I am currently running CS4 and this is the first time I have experienced this issue. Approximately half of my EPS formatted illustrator files will not parse. I use Quark Xpress 7 for my layout (never liked any of the Indesign programs). If I try to generate a PDF with my CS4 generated EPS files placed at least 60% of the time the placed file will corrupt the PDF export resulting in no PDF being generated.
Further to this PDF export issue, if I attempt to parse the same EPS file into Photoshop, Photoshop will give me the error message "Could not complete your request because Photoshop was unable to parse the PostScript" and it will abort the attempt to open the file.
Anyone else having Illustrator EPS file issues?
Background info (if needed) Dual 2.0 Ghz, PowerMac G5, 8 gb RAM, running Tiger 10.4.11
I have attached a sample Illustrator file that will not Parse. It will open in Illustrator but not parse into Photoshop or if placed in Quark will not parse and allow for a PDF to be exported. Thanks for taking the time to write Steve.
I understand that I can drag and drop between programs. Ultimately, when attempting to parse an EPS in photoshop I am merely doing it to confirm that the EPS is indeed corrupt.
As mentioned previously, I predominately use Quark Xpress for my page layout program and until I installed CS4 I have had zero complications with using EPS files. Now I quite commonly can not export PDFs due to corrupt EPS files.
My question to the public is I am alone in this glitch or do others experience the same issue. My first thoughts are that CS4 has a glitch and I should be expecting an update in the near future. But, if I am the only person suffering from this issue than maybe I should be looking at my own software. -
Why can't I replace an image in a PDF with an EPS file?
I've never seen this behavior before. When I browse out to get some EPS files, they're all greyed out!!! The only files I can import in place of an exsiting image are TIFFs and PNGs, bitmap image formats. This is ridiculous.
Thanks,
PeterIt would be part of a different scenario that goes something like this:
1. Delete the original image in Acrobat (e.g., with the TouchUp Object tool, or whatever your version of Acrobat calls it).
2. Add a button in Acrobat and set up the properties as you want.
a. Layout: Icon Only
b. No visible background or border
c. Line style: Solid
d. Set the scaling you want
e. Whatever else
3. On the Options tab of the Field Properties dialog, click the "Select Icon" button and choose a page from the PDF that has the content you want to use. EPS/Postscript is an option, but you may want to convert to PDF first to make sure everything is as you want it.
4. Flatten the button to convert its appearance to regular page contents.
The vector (and text and image) content of the PDF/EPS will be preserved, and can be scaled to fit the area defined by the button boundaries.
You can preconfigue a button with all of the properties set up as you want them, and simply copy & paste it whenever you need to do this, saving a bit of time. -
Accurate preview of gradients in EPS objects
I hope I can explain this properly... our company has been using a primarily Quark-based workflow for as long as I've been here. We would take individual layouts, save them as EPS, and then import them into a master layout (which was the size of our plates), and those layouts were printed directly from Quark. This has been buggy, as you can imagine, but has worked for us for the most part.
We are now in the process of adding PDF to the workflow (master Quark layout now exported as PDF, then dropped to a hot folder), and I've had a number of issues crop up (mostly due to the limitations of our new plate processor). The biggest issue is that we cannot control the preview size on the RIP server, which makes it near impossible to find errors. Obviously, the answer to that is to preview it in Acrobat before releasing. Enter the major issue...
Some of our ads arrive (or are built) as Illustrator EPS files, and some of them have a black to white gradient over a darker background (typically- but not always- red). When those files are imported into Quark, they look fine. When they are output as EPS, JPG, or PDF files for proofing, they look fine. In short, they look fine at every step of the process except the final output- they simply do not RIP properly. The gradient completely drops out, and I am left with a gradient-shaped hole. The solution has always been to put a white box behind that object (since no combination of overprint, trapping, etc. seems to affect it), which I don't mind continuing except for the problem of not having the means to review the document and catch it before the file is sent to print. We have 30+ artists, and while they have been instructed to add that box and look for those problems themselves, issues are going to creep through.
What I need, I guess, is some way to either catch this problem in Quark before the layout is exported to EPS, or a way to see an accurate preview in Acrobat so that it is caught before the document is printed. I've tried Advanced > Print Production > Output Preview > toggle Simulate Overprinting, but no dice. Any other suggestions?
Please forgive me if this doesn't make sense. I'm blaming a sinus infection. :-/
Thanks in advance!
T
P.S. Please note that changing the software I use isn't an option. I'd love to go all-Adobe, but with 30+ artists, that's not happening any time soon. Any other suggestions on how to fix this process, however, I'm all ears. Thanks - but that's NOT it. Somewhere - there's a setting that allows you to view the vector in 72. 150 or 300 dpi. And depending on which one you select the bitmapping gets more refined as you zoom in on the artwork (in my case a logo). I know its there because I did it a couple of months ago - but stupidly I did not note where that setting is or whose blog I saw the answer on.

Difference b/w eps/jpg/pdf
I work for a newspaper and for several months we have had sporadic issues when it comes to making our plates for the press. By issues, I mean those including pages that suddenly print upside down with the text appearing backwards and other instances where the text and images on a page are partially cut off or jagged.
Today I pin pointed the issue, discovering it had to do with the way some of our advertisements are being made in house.
It appears that when our ad designers go to a third party image site (Creative Outlet, which we subscribe to), they are sometimes downloading entire ads (which include several .eps files) and then pulling one piece of artwork from the ad to use in an entirely different ad.
I was able to locate a particular piece of said artwork that was utilized in one of our ads this past week. It was a .eps. I, instead, re-saved it as a .jpg, then relinked the file in Indesign, where our in-house ad had been built. I then exported as a .pdf and then placed that .pdf in our newspaper layout and exported the entire document to .pdf.
When we went to "roam" the page/pdf, the page was fine, except this ad did not have this piece of artwork showing.
I then went back and instead of exporting the ad as a .pdf, I exported it to .jpg. I then brought it into our newspaper layout, and exported it to .pdf.
When we roamed this page, the page was fine AND the ad now showed up in its entirety.
So, my question or questions, is/are:
1. What are the differences between .eps and .jpg and why would their distinction have an effect on the RIP process or computer to plate process?
2. What are the differences between .pdf and .jpg and why would their distinction have an effect on the RIP process or computer to plate process?
At the end of this, what I really just want to understand is why did the process I eventually came to (saving .eps file/artwork as .jpg, then after placing it in my ad document, exporting said document as a .jpg) work?I can give you my non-expert opinion, and I'm sure that if I get something wrong, someone will be along shortly to correct me.
Jpeg (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a file format that uses a grid of pixels to represent an image, so it's a bitmap format. There are several bitmap formats that make them more or less useful in different circumstances. Because the amount of detail in a bitmap image is dependent upon the number of pixels it has, bitmap images can have very large file sizes.
One way to reduce the file size is through compression. Compression can be done by at least two methods: Lossy and Lossless. With lossless compression, contiguous ranges of same-colored pixels that may be described as white, white, white, white, white, black, black, white, black without compression can be described as 5-whites, 2-blacks, white, black with lossless compression. No data is lost, but the reading device needs to be able to read the compressed data and uncompress it.
The other way is called Lossless, in which groups of similarly-colored pixels are changed to a different color in order to create contiguous areas of same-colored pixels. So, if 100 was black and 0 was white (and numbers in between being shades of gray), you might get something like 100, 0, 100, 48, 49, 47, 48, 49, 100, 0, which when compressed might change to 100, 0, 5-47s, 100, 0, and the detail of the different colors is discarded from the file and lost (therefore, "lossy).
With Jpeg, there is also the matter of areas of high compression leaving visual artifacts, which can be seen in the cat image in the Wikipedia page on Jpegs that I linked to above. Many people feel that jpeg is useful for situations where you need smaller file sizes (like low-capacity cameras and slow-connection web viewing), but are not good for printing where file size may be less of a concern than image quality.
Tiff is a bitmap format that offers lossless LZW compression as an option, and Jpeg offers lossy compression that can be set on a scale from 0 to 12. The lower the number, the more data is lost.
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is PostScript code (PostScript was originally designed as a protocol for computers to talk to certain types of laser printers) that has been encapsulated with the addition of extra data in order to allow that code to be used as a graphic format. PostScript data can contain bitmap data as well as Vector data (describing shapes with points and connecting lines and curves rather than a grid of pixels). If an eps contains only bitmap data, there is little reason to save it as eps, because modern workflows don't benefit from anything that eps could add, and other formats are usually recommended instead. Even if you have vector and bitmap data in the same image, eps is considered an older format that is better to avoid. PDF Tiff and PSD (Photoshop Document) are formats that can contain vector data and bitmap data.
So, if your team are using eps files of whole ads, how are they doing it? Are they placing the eps into an image frame and using the frame's edges to crop out the unwanted areas? Are they opening the eps in another program and either cropping or removing parts of the ad and then saving? And if the latter, what editing programs are they using and what file format(s) are they saving as? As far as the images shifting, there could be reasons why it's doing that, but I could only speculate without seeing your files and your workflow, which I can't really do over a forum. -
Has CS5 changed the way it saves a legacy file? (3.0.eps)
We have been saving files for opening in a sign layout and vinyl cutting program (FlexiSign) for years as a version 3.eps. Since upgrading to CS5, the very old version of Flexisign we have been using can no longer even see the file as a choice to open. 3.0 eps Files saved from CS4 illustrator work just fine. We have a work around (saving as .ai3 files) so there really is not a problem, but I am curious if there has been a change in the way illustrator saves legacy files after all these years?
In case your wondering the FlexiSign program is still running on a old G3 on OS 9.2, its a one trick pony but has been making money for years!
thanksI'm running an even older cutting program, FlexiCUT 4.5, on an old Powerbook 1400 to drive a Rowland PNC24 cutter. I've always just back-saved to native .ai format, version 8. (Made myself some Suzuki V-Strom sweatshirts just last week. ;-) )
I'm not where I can test the version 3 EPS from CS5 right now, though.

Masked EPS rasters shift!
I'm noticing that every time I mask an EPS raster in Illustrator (13.0.1), the resulting PDF file always has the raster shifted ever so slighty (like a point). It doesn't happen with any other raster format. Nor does it happen if I embed the EPS before saving as a PDF. But, both of those options are very time consuming. Does anyone know of a fix or a simpler work around?
Also, can anyone confirm that this happens to them too?
As a test:
Place an EPS raster into an empty layout.
Make a zero point mask in known position (say a 1 inch square in a corner).
Produce a PDF (any settings) via "Save as"
Open the resulting PDF in Acrobat
For me, it's ALWAYS barely shifted and prints as such too. If I take the same PDF back into Ai, it shows up fine.
Very frustrating.Hey all. thanks for the replies; I am closer but further from a solution. I have experimented with your suggestions and this is what I found:
I re-assigned sRGB to the document and checked that Transparency Blend Space was Document RGB, no change.
Exporting to PDF/X-4 does resolve the issue IF the Blue stays as a spot color.
Exporting to PDF/X-4 with the Blue as a process color results in all pages appearing "faded", including those that are text-only, except those with shapes (simple rectanges/lines) or .ai vector graphics, with shadows.
Exporting to PDF/X-1a results in all pages appearing "faded" regradless of content.
Although PDF/X-4 and spot colors results in proper appearance, I am actually producing an Interactive PDF (transitions, embedded flash objects), and once you select "Interactive", the dialog for export options is totally different than the "Print" dialog, and there are no color options at all, so what I need is to resolve the issue pre-export, somewhere in my other settings. Swapping Spot Vs. Process colors (as Rob indicated) had no effect when exporting to Interactive.
I did notice that the option in PDF/X-4 that caused the change was on the "Output" tab, having "Output Intent Profile Name" set to standard (Document CMYK - U.S. Web Coated). If I enable that setting on any export profile and use spot colors, everything is correct (except the lack of interactive elements)
I also tried switching Color Management Policies ("Convert to Working Space" Vs. "Preserve Embedded Profiles") in Color Settings, no change.
Any other ideas? Thanks for the input! -
"not the right kind of document" -- eps & ps
This seems to be quite an issue with photoshop, as I see.
The weird thing is that Photoshop CS2 could open EPS and PS files, which was handy for generating hi-res tiff from InDesign layouts. Now suddenly it cannot open neither postscript file — and reads "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".
I re-installed the Photoshop from the CreativeSuite CD; I also tried to apply the steps from here http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/329/329945.html , however the only relevant "solution" was to recreate the preferences file, which hasn't helped either.
Any clues? Thanks in advance.
System: Win XP, SP3 / Adobe CS 2 Premium with updates / 3Gb RAMAs Chris Cox points out, PS wants, and needs, to see things in certain locations. Attempts at "housekeeping" can have catastrophic results.
The same thing with many 3rd party plug-ins. Many require that you "install," while some just require that you copy the plug-in over to a particular folder. You need to follow the instructions closely, and comply.
Unlike Premiere surveying one's system for all .VST's, PS likes things a certain way with regards to plug-ins.
Good luck,

How to deliver layout settings with par
Hi,
I've developed a Repository Manager and packaged it into a par.
In the RM I added some new UICommands and properties. That's, after deploying the par, the user needs map the new UICommands in KM-CM-User Interface, map new properties in KM-CM-Global Services, and add the commands to a layout, and finally set the layout to the repository.
Is there any way to deliver these settings along with the par, so that users can use the new commands immediately after deploying the par?
Thanks,
RayHi Robert,
Thanks for help:)
As to properties, I've tried to add a my_property.co.xml under install/data/cm/services/properties_metadata and ..../properties_metadata_properties, but neither is OK, saying that there's no corresponding configuration definition file under some folder I forgot:(
From the import-xx.prjconfig I can see many things, like icons and mimes can also be deployed in the config archive. (local/cm/utilities/mimes, local/cm/utilities/icons, local/cm/utilities/channels, etc). Is there any document explaining the structure of the configuration files?
Thanks:)

Can Java save straight to EPS or similar?
Thanks for reading, heres the setup--user visits my site to design his own custom plaque-he picks a template in my hypothetical Java app and sets to work entering names, congradulatory text and picking from pre-defined graphics/logos and then clicks the ORDER button.
Can I export his design intact to my server in an EPS or similar, common vector file format? Preferably converting some of the type to curves in the process.
I don't want to go through a lot of BS to get the file (as with Flash)--I can't run the output through some third party interpreter and get a sorta-kinda-like representation of his design--it's gotta be THE WYSIWYG design he produced. Reason being we're trying to avoid the layout-proof-update roundtrip--what he designed is exactly what we produce and if there are any mistakes they are his, not ours. (It may sound harsh but it's the only way we can possibly compete anymore--we need to offload the design process 100% onto the customer)
So, can Java do this? Can I get an EPS or similar format straight out of a Java app?
Thank you.http://barcode4j.krysalis.org/
Next time, go and use Google yourself. -

It is random and it's not related to a file (one time i can open the file andanother time it cause an InDesign crash);
It sounds very much like a font problem. Are you using a font manager, and if so, which one?
We have reproduced the problem also on machine with only system's fonts.
I forgot to say that the crashes happen only with InDesign files with InCopy files linked in.
Thanks

Is EPS a dying format or is it still relevant?
This is a question that was posed to me and I honestly didn't have a good answer. Many forums say that EPS is a dying format and you should just save your files as a PDF. I've created artwork from within Illustrator and have just save all my work as an EPS file. Although I know a PDF retains all the editing capabilities of the file, it just never occurred to me to save my vector artwork as a PDF. Any input on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks!
~ErickWith that said, why would I save a file as an ".ai" as oppose to a ".pdf"? Wouldn't it be better to save all vector files as PDF's as not to be redundant?
Which are better ai files or pdfs for vector files?
These are all good questions. Because they've been asked and answered many times, I'm going to point you to a couple of archived discussions to get you started. Pay particular attention to contributions by forum regular James Talmage (JET) and ex-Adobe-Employee-Illustrator-guy Mordy Golding.

Oh... and by the way, I'm probably as "old school" as you'll find among participants here. The EPS format has saved my bacon on many occasions in the past (e.g., when Quark was the preeminent page layout application). But even back then, I understood that native formats were frequently supersets of more generic formats -- hence, my first choice for saving my work was always .ai over .eps, .doc over .rtf, etc. Today, with advanced features like smart objects, it just makes more sense to me to use the native format wherever possible. -
Illustrator no longer displays the white channel of a placed DCS/.eps.
I should have spoke up sooner because I thought this would get fixed pretty quickly but I just upgraded to CS6 and it's still broken. I use Photoshop to generate color separations for screen printing. We do simulated spot process which means we print the prodomient colors of the image rather than gambling that CMYK will work. We print white because garments are often any color you can imagine. So I use the DCS.eps format alot. I place this linked in Illustrator. Up untill CS3 this worked fine. I skipped 4, but upgraded to 5. Five doesn't display the white channel. (These files are Multichannel mode, each channel is a Spot channel. saved as dcs/eps) I have not tried output. It may print fine. The thing is I end up with a client perched on my shoulder like a buzzard and if the white parts of the design or the white channel/screen isn't their to support the top/upper colors I look like I don't know what I'm doing, or I left the white out, etc. I've been in both offset printing and screen printing and T&T (trinkets and trash) for a long time. Messing up paper is one thing. Messing up an Under Armor or Nike or you name it garment is a whole different ballgame so they are pretty tense when it comes to what they see. I already have to explain that it looks pixelated and rough because it's an 8 bit preview but will print sharp.
What are the odds of getting this fixed? It worked like a charm for years (Illustrator 4 to CS3)
Any help with this would be appreciated.Evidently, Illustrator is creating its own preview, rather than using the one embedded in the EPS.
Create a Multichannel file containing several spot color channels. Make the images of the various spot channels overlap each other. Select white as the color for one of the spot channels. Set each channel's Solidity at 100%. Save as DCS2 with 8-bit TIF preview.
Import the DCS2 file into Corel Draw. Select the Place As EPS option, and it displays the dithered 8-bit composite preview embedded in the EPS, and the spot white channel shows.
If you import the very same file into Illustrator, it's as if Illustrator interprets the content of the EPS (i.e.; a stack of grayscale images) and displays its own preview as if Overprint Preview were turned on. In other words, Illustrator's "preview" of the file seems to act as if you had:
1. Saved the DCS2 file as multifile.
3. Imported the individual grayscale separation files.
4. Applied spot color Swatches to them and set each of them to overprint.
5. Turned on Overprint Preview.
Illustrator knows nothing of individual ink opacity. So as Illustrator's Overprint Preview always does, the white image (being set to overprint) disappears. Note that's not the only difference. The other separation images also display as overprinting, so areas of overlap change color, despite their "Solidity" (opacity) having been set to 100% in Photoshop.
Pretty much the same thing occurs if you save as PS CMYK with spot color channels.
If you place the image (either the DCS or the PS) in Illustrator and print separations to the Adobe PDF virtual printer, you will see that the spot white separation does print, and its image overprints the other seps, as it should. The problem is getting a reasonable preview to show your customer. One way to do that is to print a composite PDF from Photoshop and place that into Illustrator, just to serve as a temporary preview for layout purposes.
I'm on Windows these days, so don't know if there are caveats on MacOS regarding "printing" to PDF.
Just more of Adobe's "cross application integration" of these CS bundles.
