EPS photos with Clipping paths dont show in Quark Xpress

Anyone experience why a Photoshop file with a clipping path will not preview when brought into Quark Xpress unless I save the preview as a tiff?
I use photoshop 7.1.

From desktopublishing.com's review of QuarkXpress 4
"The ability to control a picture's appearance in several areas. For example if you want to make a specific part of an image transparent, simply specifying the part using the clipping paths, the alpha channel that is embedded in the original picture, or the white area of the image. It can also read clipping paths in either TIFF or EPS format. Trapping tools and supports most popular color spaces, including Hexachrome, are also included."
and according to Wikipedia, Xpress 4 was released in 1997, eleven years ago with 4.1 coming two years later.
So, while I was just guessing thinking back over the last decade of versions, I was not far off, and I can't remember ever having a clipping path problem with tiffsthat version. Of course, if you didh't save the clipping path as a Clipping Path in Ps, then you would have a problem. That has been fixed now too.

  • Linking Photoshop EPS Files with Clipping Paths

    I'm running InDesign CS4 6.0.3 on a dual 2GHz G5 with Mac OS X 10.5.7.
We have a workflow that involves Photoshop EPS files being placed in InDesign with the object's clipping path set to Photoshop Path.  If the link is updated or relinked, InDesign no longer restricts the image to the boundaries of the path—either on screen or on export to PDF—even though choosing Object -> Clipping Path -> Options still shows the type set to Photoshop Path.  The only way that I have found to get the clipping path to fully apply to the image is to change the type from Photoshop Path to None and back to Photoshop Path, all while the Preview check box is on.  I tried different combinations of turning the Apply Photoshop Clipping Path option on and off at the time of initial placement and at the time of relinking with no effect on this behavior.
Assuming that using a format other than EPS and using transparency rather than clipping paths are not in play at the moment, my questions are:
    1.  Is this a know issue with InDesign CS4?  If so, can we expect a fix soon?
    2.  Is there anything that can be done on the user side that is less cumbersome than the workaround described above?

    @Mark
Photoshop PSD is fine for all raster work. But if you have vector masks, vector shapes or text in the file then saving as PDF would be the better option, you can choose to remove the white background when importing the PDF in the Show Options of the Place Dialog box.
And that's null point anyway, as soon as you open a photoshop EPS file in Photoshop it rasterises everything. So what I said isn't a viable solution for this project. But to keep in mind that PSD will output as raster only and PDF can have transparency and raster + vector data.
Just thought I'd through that out there.

  • Psd eps with clipping paths broken in Tiger ..... ?

I have been having the following problem since UPGRADING to Tiger :
Any photoshop (7) eps files containing clipping paths (created newly or rendered from before the upgrade).
Problem : Placing them into illustrator (10) just brings in a blank box (no error message displays). Trying to import them into quark (5) either completly freezes qxd or it collapses. Freehand (MX) brings in an invisible image.
    Can anyone help, please.
I am currently working on a vast range of packaging. All images are 'inherited' and need tweeking (incl their clipping paths) and brought back into their original illustrator files.

  • Jpeg and PDF clipping paths not showing up in Keynote

I am using Keynote '08 and my boss is using an earlier version. He wants to place a jpeg or pdf in his file and see the clipping path. He has pdfs on his machine that open in his keynote document with the clipping path intact, you don't see the white background of the image. When he places the jpegs and pdfs I have sent him, with clipping paths I created, in the same keynote document, mine show up with the white backgrounds.
    Help!

The previous designer here saved jpegs and pdfs with clipping paths that apparantly he can open. I give him a jpeg with a clipping path (created by someone else) as well as save it as a PDF with clipping path and he cannot see the clipping path. He specifically wants to use jpegs or pdfs because that is what he has been using and that is what has been working for him until I sent him jpegs and pdfs that aren't working. So far it is just this one photo as a jpeg and saved as a pdf. I cannot find any difference between these two and the ones he is able to see clipping paths on.

Hello everyone, I am having trouble with clipping paths in Photoshop CS5. What do you mean by "a Path Layer was created"?  Path are in the path palette, there is a path in shape layers and they is a path in a vector layer mask. I have never seen a reference to a path layer before this.  When a path in the path palette is selected activate it wall also be shown in the image window.  Does not matter if there is a targeted layer or not.  Control points may or may not be displayed. Using Path tool you can select and select segments and show some or all control points, Path are editable.
View the following image in a new tab and scale to actual pixels for a clear image this site scales image poorly.

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas

I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much

    John,
I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
Thank you John and Monika for your help.

I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
but i seem to be lost.
It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.

  • Objects with Clipping Paths?

If I import an image (jpg) with clipping path and covert it to a button how can I get it to display properly?
    Thanks in advance.

The problem likely is caused by you combining images of varying resolutions (Image > Image Size).
I wuld recommend applying the Path as a Vector Mask in the original document (change Background Layers to regular ones by double-clicking them) and moving that into the container file.

  • Bring in .psd file along with clipping path

Okay, this client has a very odd request. They want a collage of images put together in one file and they want the clipping paths to be attached. Then it's to be saved as an eps file. I'd like to do this in InDesign rather than Photoshop because the clipping path stays with the image in InDesign when you move it. However, I don't know how to save the file as an .eps file with the clipping paths attached. I open the .eps files in Photoshop and there are no clipping paths present.
Help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

My suggestion is to compose the entire collage in Photoshop. And if you need to preserve the clipping paths of each image of the finished collage, then convert the clipping path to a vector mask. Then you can drag a layer (that will include image and path) into one photoshop file to make collage.
Here are the instructions from previous post to convert a path into a vector mask.
To create a vector mask in PS, select the path in the Path Panel, then under Layer menu > Vector Mask > Current Path.

  • Is export path to illustrator the only way to get a psd w/ clipping path to show up in Illustrator?

I'm wasting time having to place my image in Illustrator then manually line up the clipping path. You used to be able to save a file with a clipping path as an EPS in photoshop, select "retain vector data", place in illustrator and hit cmd Y to see the clipping path. I need the image and the clipping path in Illustrator and the image is too complex to create a mask in Illustrator. I tried to save it as an EPS but "retain vector data" is grayed out.

If you relink your embedded image again, so that the image inside your illustrator layout will reflect changes of the source image, the clipping path remains. A very nasty bug of Illustrator, upon a colleague of mine stumbled upon during an Illustrator Training he held.

  • Trouble with clipping paths and expanding

Hey y'all. Okay, so I have a Illustrator element that uses a clipping path.
Even after I run "Expand Appearance" on it, it's not trimming the art to the bounds of the path.
It's making for difficult to position correctly when copying into Photoshop as a Smart Vector or Shape Layer:
And it isn't correct in After Effects either.

What you are describing is just another example of the very common need to trim artwork (including filled, unfilled, open, and/or closed paths) without wrecking its already-applied Attributes, Appearances.
As has been discussed many many times here, Illustrator simply does not provide that basic functionality...neither by its horribly-designed cutting tools nor through its problematic and caveat-riddled Pathfinders. Expanding a Clipping Path doesn't serve as a workaround for this long-missing functionality; nor does flattening transparency. You can't do it without resorting to the workarounds you've already tried or others that will no doubt be suggested.
    Once again:
NONE of Illustrator's cutting tools (Knife, Scissor) can cut across artwork that includes multiple open, unfilled paths. Open unfilled paths are ignored by the Knife cut. The Scissor cannot cut across multiple paths at once.
Illustrator's recently-added, very poorly implemented Eraser tool comes nearest to the needed functionality. It can at least cut multiple unfilled open paths without their becoming converted to unstroked, closed fills. But it unpredictably alters the shapes of remaining portions and has no means by which to accurately control a cutting shape other than rectangular.
This is a prime example (there are others) of how Illustrator confuses and clutters the interface with multiple under-powered tools designed for similar functions, none of which measure up to a single tool properly designed for the same purposes in most other programs.
Pathfinders are riddled with ridiculous caveats. Those which come close to providing the needed functionality are incapable of ommitting the unwanted deadwood and/or wreck strokes by outlining them.
Illustrator needs a feature that allows any given path to be employed as either a selection marquee or a cutting path. And the cutting operation needs to act as expected regarding strokes as well as fills--as common in any other drawing program that does provide the long-missing functionality (most do; Illustator never has).

  • Can't get photo with transparent background to show up that way

I'm quite new to PSE (using ver. 6) so thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
I have a photo, and have made the background transparent, and saved it as a GIF file.  When opened, it shows up with the checkered background.  Good so far.
When I drag this photo from the Project Bin at the bottom (where I still see the checkerd background) into the image I'm working on, it shows up with a solid gray background once dropped into that image.  So in essence, the background is no longer transparent.
How do I add this photo with the transparent background to the image I'm working on without a background / frame showing up?  I've combed the internet and can't find an answer, and searching this forum, still coming up empty.  I think the problem has to do with dragging it from the project bin.  How else can I get it into the image I'm working on?
    Thanks!
    Kevin

In PSE 6, dragging up from the project bin creates a special kind of passthrough layer. Copy/paste, or drag it down from the gif's image window into the other file in the project bin instead.

  • Converting tif with clipping path to solid spot color CS3

There must be a better way to do this, I need to make an opaque white spot color overprint the silo'd 4/C image (this is for a window cling). In the past I would duplicate the tif, convert to grayscale, fill with black, duplicate the placed tif, re-link to the new grayscale tif and color it to the spot color. This works fine, but is there a way to simply duplicate the placed tif, delete the image and fill the path with a spot color? TIA

Absolutely. First copy the image and then paste in place. Right click and choose convert clipping path to frame. Delete the image from that frame and fill it with color.
