EPS to PDF: Smooth Shades, Bug in Acrobat?

Hello!
I encountered a really weird feature/bug in Acrobat.
I have a very simple EPS file which draws 2 x 5 = 10 adjacing black squares. (EPS file below and attached)
When I drag it into Acrobat 8.1.5 and save it as PDF, and then try to open this PDF in Illustrator, Illustrator says: [German] "Eine unbekannte Schattierungsart wurde gefunden." which might be in [English]: "An unknown shading type was found."
And then the big regtangle (which was the 10 squares before) cannot be edited in Illustrator because this object is [German] "Grafik aus Drittprogramm" which might be in [English]: "Graphics from third party software".
The fact that Acrobat makes a large rectangle out of the 10 squares, is not very uncommon. But why does Acrobat not leave the color black but changes it into a smooth shade (which runs from black to black)???
(I know that I can disable the smooth shade feature in Acrobat. But still: there is a bug in Acrobat that reconizes an object with one unique color as a smooth shade!)

Are you sure didn't have the Shift key down at the same time as you pressed Cmd and the + (plus) key?
Cmd-Shift-plus and Cmd-Shift-minus are the shortcuts for rotate clockwise and counterclockwise.
For me, with Acrobat X 10.1.1 on Lion Mac OS X 10.7.2, Cmd-plus and Cmd-minus are working fine for zooming in and zooming out.

  • Acrobat 9.0 (Windows XP) I Need help converting an EPS to PDF

When I try to convert an eps to pdf in acrobat 9.0 I get this error message %%[ Warning: Empty job. No PDF file produced. ] %%
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? If you could give me a step by step instruction on how to do so it would be great because I am a new user.

Try opening Distiller first (do not drag it) so that you can see the messages on screen. There is typically a log file produced also. For some reason, it appears that you are getting the message and it has no basic info included, but it may not be complete. I will not say that I can read all of the log files, but it is the starting place. Another alternative is to try to post the EPS file (hopefully not too big) for us to download and try ourselves. Unfortunately, I can not try AA9 that I do not have, only 4 different earlier versions.

  • Another BUG in Acrobat 9.4.5 -- Find doesn't work

I made the mistake of updating to the latest version Acrobat 9.4.5, and discovered that the Find feature doesn't work right.  For example, I enter a word to search in the "Find" box, and click return.  In past versions, the PDF would jump to the first instance of the term or phrase and highlight the word.  Now, the PDF jumps to the page, but doesn't highlight the word!  So... I'm stuck reading through text to find the word, which is a lot of extra work and time that I don't have. This is a critical problem because I search documents for terms all of the time in my job.
I've found one workaround that isn't very satisfactory, but it is better than nothing.  Instead of using "Find Next in PDF", I use "Open Full Acrobat Search" which is a command off the Find pull-down menu.  This command opens up a separate window, which is annoying because it disappears behind the document if you need to page through the PDF file. However, if I do the search, it shows all of the instances in a pane in the context of the sentence where it appears.  Then, if I click on the instance of the word in this pane twice (Yes, TWICE), it will highlight the word in the PDF. You cannot use the Find Next button as you could in previous versions, because this function will not highlight the word.  Anyway, given there are other bugs in this release that I've read about in this forum, I'll most likely just go back to the previous version and completely disable the automatic update feature in Acrobat.  I wish going back was a quick process, but I don't think it is.
I'm also going to tell everyone in my circle of friends to avoid automatically updating Adobe Acrobat in the future. Adobe obviously doesn't test the software well. Wish I could charge Adobe for the time and frustration they've caused me!

    Brianwrx,
The Acrobat 9.4.5 update bugs where the first "hit" on each page is not highlighted when doing a Find/Search and no longer being able to use Shift & Ctrl on the Pages pane thumbnails to multi-select and move/delete pages are well reported by many to have been introduced coincident with the Acrobat 9.4.5 release and not a MS Windows update.  I'm not sure what is going on with your 9.0.0 Pro Extended.
For seasoned Adobe to break such commonly used features in Acrobat 9, never have regression tested these basic functions given the 3 month (or longer) release cycle, and not have broke it in Acrobat X doesn't reflect well on their development/test process.  Then, there are web forum recommendations prodding to upgrade to Acrobat X -- which completely changed the User Interface and will result in significant loss of productivity while bridging the learning curve and dealing with new functional/compatibility problems.  Furthermore, it is something how OCR Suspects are never found/flagged in Acrobat 9, and then were finally fixed in Acrobat X (forcing the need for a paid upgrade to get a bug fix and have to relearn the interface to boot).
Adobe's poor quality 9.4.5 release update does me more harm than good when considering other settings to improve Acrobat security (turning off Java-Script, not automatically trusting sites from the Win OS security zones, and not allowing the opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications under the Edit menu - Preferences).  Adobe has made no official commitment to fix its bugs or provide a release date in the 10+ weeks since the awful 9.4.5 code was thrown over the fence to unsuspecting auto-update customers without any practical/simple way to back it off to 9.4.4 -- even though in all probability it will take the programmer one day each to fix the bugs with some additional time to test/release).  It is interesting that there have been no critical Acrobat security issues (as evidenced by no Out-Of-Cycle releases since 9.4.5), which should mean their programmers have more time to fix these bugs and restore stable functionality in 9.4.6.  As for "not being able to use Shift & Ctrl directly on the Pages pane thumbnails to move pages" (another 9.4.5 bug), the circumvention to drag a window around a group of pages, hold down Shift, and drag a window around a second group of pages should be further clarified with the following: Once your blue highlighted contiguous/non-contiguous pages selection is made, be sure to drag a thumbnail graphic directly to move the selection and don't try to drag the blue shaded perimeter area (which results in clearing the blue highlighting).  This does provide a decent circumvention for that bug -- as compared to the cumbersome "Full Acrobat Search - Advanced Search Options - double-clicking each Result line" circumvention for the Find/Search first "hit" non-highlighting bug.  I implore Adobe to listen to your customers and please take a "do no harm" conservative approach to updates/enhancements in the future.

  • PDDocSaveWithParams does not change PDF version from 1.8 (Acrobat 9, Acrobat X) to 1.4

    Dear all,
this post seems similar to this discussion:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1160826#1160826
    but it is not.
Our customers prepare documents to be presented at regulatory  authorities, and it is required that these documents have PDF Version  1.4, are linearized, etc. In a plug-in we change the document properties accordingly. This used to work fine with Acrobat versions from 6 to 9. Then came Acrobat X.
We detected the problem with a document created with Acrobat PDFMaker 10.0 for Word: a very simple 1-page 3-lines document with no Acrobat X features.
When using Acrobat X, after calling PDDocSaveWithParams, the PDF version was not changed as required. (We check this calling PDDocGetVersion from the plugin after saving.)
Doing the same conversion with Acrobat 9 seemed to be OK: PDDocGetVersion reported PDF Version 1.4.
But when opening the converted document in Acrobat X, it still reported "PDF Version: 1.7 Extension Level 8 (Acrobat X.x)".
Opening it in a text editor showed that the header was "%PDF-1.4", but it still had "<</Extensions<</ADBE<</BaseVersion/1.7/ExtensionLevel 8>>>>..."
With Acrobat 8 and below, the version could not be downgraded, but this was reported correctly.
Downgrading the version directly via the "Optimize" function of Acrobat X worked.
I could not test Acrobat 9, since I have no Professional version available.
In Acrobat 8 Prof, I saw the message "This file appears to use a new format that this version of Acrobat does not support.", and the "Optimize" function was disabled.
Now I have the following questions:
    (1) Is it a known problem that PDDocSaveWithParams does not downgrade the version with Acrobat X ?
    (2) Is it a known problem that PDDocSaveWithParams does not downgrade correctly with Acrobat 9 ?
    (3) Is it a known problem that Acrobat9 wrongly reports the PDF Version of the document, in this case ?
    (4) Why is downgrading (or optimizing) disabled for Acrobat 8 and below ?
    Thank you !

Remember that as of PDF 1.4, the version number in the PDF header can be overridden via a /Version key in the /Catalog dictionary.  In addition, the presence of an /Extension dictionary (ISO 32000-1) will also override the header version.
The header version is JUST A HINT - it is NOT a guarantee of any sort.
Based on both of the above, neither of your "bugs" are bugs.
Acrobat 9 (and I assume X as well) are reporting correctly. If you have a PDF that you believe IS being reported incorrectly, please post!
If the Extensions dict is present, the Save command will NOT override it since it takes precedence.

  • Two bugs in Acrobat 9?

I'm trying out a Document in Acrobat 9. I found two apparent bugs.
On my PowerBook 17" I have installed correct Driver for my Printer a HP DJ 990cse. However when I go to set as default printer inside Page Setup within Acrobat 9 the is no indication of a printer. Yet when I go elsewhere such PDF Optimizer> advanced it shows the printer. Note I use printer Plugged into my Airport Express. Acrobat 8 has no problem with this setup.
Problem two: In the document I noticed a defect in one line with the letter "g" and attempted to use touch up text to retype it to see if I could repair the defect. well when I did the text drop a point or so below the line and completely messed up anything in the box.
My PowerBook 17 uses a display of 1400x900
    IN suggestions?

Gentlemen - the workaround is to open Acrobat first. Then do a file > Open to open the file in Acrobat. If you do this then you should see your printers in the Page Setup. If you double-click on the PDF to open it in Acrobat then you will NOT see your printers. This seems to affect only 10.4.11 and not any version of 10.5. Good Luck!
For some reason this thread just showed up on new Forum System.
Anyway I tried your work around. Had no affect.

  • I can't create PDFs from CS3 programs in Acrobat Pro XI. Compatibility issue or just Acrobat?

I was just upgraded to Acrobat Pro XI this morning. InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator don't seem to be supported file types for creating a PDF from Acrobat.  While I usually create my PDFs from the authoring program, I occasionally need to make a lot of PDFs of different files at once, and making them from Acrobat makes sense instead of opening each individual file.
Is this just a compatibility issue? We have requested upgrades to CS6, but it will be a while before it gets approved (if it gets approved).  Did someone think it was a brilliant idea not to allow PDFs from the CS products to be created from Acrobat instead of the authoring program?

Can you describe your workflow a little more? Are you saying that you created PDFs of InDesign documents using Acrobat directly -- not using InDesign?
If that was possible in CS3, I must have missed it.
FWIW, I can't select CS6 InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop documents in Acrobat X. You can only select a handful of image formats, HTML or PostScript/EPS.

  • EPS to PDF

I'm opening a graphic image in EPS format. I've tried Acrobat 8 Pro  and Distiller 8. I've adjusted the setting to "high quality print" in  EDIT > PREFERENCES. The resulting PDF is sharp as a tack but missing  pieces. It's music notation. The vertical lines of notes and the  horizontal lines of the staff and beams are there. Other symbols like  accidentals and slurs are there. But the circles, the notes themselves,  are missing. Looks seriously strange.
The EPS was  produced by Finale 2008's graphics tool. It permits you to export as  TIFF or EPS, a whole page or just a section. The TIFFs are very high res. but there remain some aliasing issues.
How can I  see this image in its entirety?
    Thanks,
    Jeanne

Well, thanks for that. You didn't solve my problem but set me on the right path. (I'd known about embedding fonts when creating a PDF, but never had to think about it when importing). I had Acrobat set for high quality and it definitely knows what and where the fonts are. But...
Finale 2008 uses PS fonts and also uses TrueType on screen and to print to non-PS printers.
But it does not embed TT fonts in EPS files. Ugh! I can't tell you (I guess you know) how gorgeous the EPS file looks when partially rendered by Acrobat. What a tease! That is still a little baffling because a single note is a single character and Acrobat is rendering a part of that character but not all. Is there more to understand there?
Anyway, as far as I can tell, (1) Acrobat is using TrueType when it acts as printer directly from Finale but (2) can't when it tries to deal directly with an EPS file of that same page through no fault of its own. Relatedly,  (3) I have reason to want good screen shots (actually, video screen  capture). This is nearly impossible to do on a reliable basis.
If anyone has more light to shed, that will be great. But, really, thanks again for a lead that answered *two* questions as much as possible I think.
    Jeanne

  • Export to eps or pdf - strokes change to filled paths

I'm probably missing something basic here but I seem to have a problem that happens intermittently. When I export an indesign document that contains strokes as an eps or pdf then open it up in Illustrator, my strokes have changed to filled paths. How do I stop it converting them? I've tried various flattening options but it hasn't worked... (The indesign file contains placed Illustrator eps files with die lines and it seems to happen with the complicated lines). Thankyou

    Dsl0028 wrote:
Sorry the story gets longer - The placed files are usually supplied as pdfs which I amend and resave as Illustrator CS5 eps so the strokes are correct there. Those files are stepped in Indesign and exported as an eps and pdf again for printing purposes.
As John says, Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF editor and can only be relied upon to accurately edit PDF created in Illustrator. In Addition, is there some specific reason for saving as EPS? ID is perfectly capable of placing native .ai and PDF files, and many problems that seem to have no other cause disappear when .eps files are resaved in another format.
If you have to continue with this questionable workflow, keep in mind that what yoou are describing, converting strokes to filled paths, sounds like part of a transparency flattening process and is far more likely to occur when exporting to .eps which doesn't support transparency and always is flattened. Export to PDF with Acrobat 1.4 compatibility or higher may work better, but there's no guarantee it will open properly in Illustrator.

  • How do I get the PDF Convert feature of Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9.4.4, which makes a PDF of a web page interactive, to work in Firefox 4.0.1?

I just installed (on my Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) operating system/Intel i5 CPU M560 2.67 GHz) and am now using as my default browser Firefox 4.0.1 because Internet Explorer 9 was giving me so much trouble--lack of display of web content, lack of PDF reproduction when web content displayed, screwball formatting display, etc., all of which has been remedied by the mere installation of Firefox 4.0.1.
How do I get the PDF Convert feature of Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9.4.4, which converts a web page to an interactive PDF, to set up and work on Firefox 4.0.1?

You can not do that using Adobe Acrobat 9. Adobe never made a create PDF add-on for Firefox for use with Adobe Acrobat 9. They created a Firefox add-on for use with Acrobat X, but currently that one does not work with Firefox 4 though Adobe are working on an update.

  • Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

There is a check box in the preference (under edit). I have not had great success with this setting, but that is what it is supposed to do. Don't expect it to happen in Chrome that has it's own PDF viewer (or the preview function on a MAC). You might also check the settings for your particular browser.

I would try using this tool to first remove all traces of Acrobat from your computer:
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then, you can download the full offline Reader installer from
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
After downloading, restart your computer and run the installer before doing anything else.

You can open a pdf in the PSE editor. When you open the pdf, a dialog will ask you  which page to chose (if it's a multipage pdf) and which parameters to use for the conversion to bitmap.
Since you are on a flattened bitmap (psd, tiff, png, jpeg...) all text will be converted and you won't be able to edit text (which is vector format).
