EPS Transparency

We're using Photoshop CS2 in the office and want to save shape layers as EPS files that can then be opened in new files for web & paper publications.
I've tried a number of save options, but when I open the file it is always rasterized, with a white background.
What am I doing wrong?

I believe in later versions of photoshop eps has been discontinued as an export format, due to pdf being a superior format. Eps has two flavors raster based and vector based, but is capable of combining both, think of it like a shell holding  the image. The raster based image does not support transparency, however the vector based does not need transparency as it handles just the paths and any place that is not part of the enclosed  path is transparent. Because nothing is defined for that area.
With all of that out of the way, photoshop can still export paths as an illustrator file. The issue with this is you need illustrator so you can define its stroke color as the default is no fill and no stroke. Which is why when you import the ai file you can not see anything.
If you use the pdf option make sure that editing with photoshop is enabled or you can not use the shape layer. As you will end up with a rater based image with a white background. With photoshop editing enabled once the image has been opened, you can double click on the smart object to see the shape layer.
Its been awhile since I have used CS2, so some of the options above may not be available to you, for that I appologize. If none of the above work, then odds are you will need to save your shape layers as a photoshop file (psd).
Good luck...

  • Problem with eps transparency, Illustrator CS4

    Hi!
    I truly hope you can help me with this because I really can't find the answer myself.
    I need to save eps-versions of the files I make in the Illustrator.
    I have made a script (using Javascript) to get the right settings for eps automatically and it has worked fine, but now that I upgraded to CS4 there's suddenly a problem. Script used to work so that any excess transparency around the image was cropped off. Now it remains there and causes problems later in the processes where these eps-files are used.
    If I look at the eps-files in the Photoshop I can see that the size of the artboard remains there as transparency.
    Here are the settings for saving eps in the script:
    function getEPSOptions()
    var epsSaveOpts = new EPSSaveOptions();
    epsSaveOpts.cmykPostscript = true;
    epsSaveOpts.embedAllFonts = true;
    epsSaveOpts.includeDocumentThumbnails = false;
    epsSaveOpts.preview = EPSPreview.None;
      return epsSaveOpts;
    I noticed that I can crop the transparency off with this line:
    saveDoc.cropBox = saveDoc.visibleBounds
    But the problem here is that if the size of the illustration is larger than artboard this will actually make the size of the eps-file bigger.
    I need a solution where the tranparency is cropped off, but the artboard area is never made larger by the script...
    Any ideas? Anyone?

    Heh ... I happened to write a function for exactly this just the other day. Not sure how this goes exactly with visible vs geometric bounds. Depending on exactly what you need, it might be problematic.
    myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var docBounds = (function() {
    myDoc.LeftPoint = myDoc.pageItems[0].left;
    myDoc.RightPoint = myDoc.pageItems[0].left + myDoc.pageItems[0].width;
    myDoc.TopPoint = myDoc.pageItems[0].top;
    myDoc.BottomPoint = myDoc.pageItems[0].top - myDoc.pageItems[0].height;
    for (i=0;i<myDoc.pageItems.length-1;i++) {
    myDoc.LeftPoint = (myDoc.pageItems[i].left < myDoc.LeftPoint) ? myDoc.pageItems[i].left : myDoc.LeftPoint;
    myDoc.RightPoint = (myDoc.pageItems[i].left + myDoc.pageItems[i].width > myDoc.RightPoint) ? myDoc.pageItems[i].left + myDoc.pageItems[i].width : myDoc.RightPoint;
    myDoc.TopPoint = (myDoc.pageItems[i].top > myDoc.TopPoint) ? myDoc.pageItems[i].top : myDoc.TopPoint;
    myDoc.BottomPoint = (myDoc.pageItems[i].top - myDoc.pageItems[i].height < myDoc.BottomPoint) ? myDoc.pageItems[i].top - myDoc.pageItems[i].height : myDoc.BottomPoint;
    return [myDoc.LeftPoint,myDoc.TopPoint,myDoc.RightPoint,myDoc.BottomPoint]
    myDoc.artboards[0].artboardRect = docBounds;

  • Print to sticker problem, eps

    I am having an Illustrator design printed on a “sticker” to be affixed to a metal plate for outdoor use. The printer requested eps. I requested a test print and the resulting image had artifacts. For instance, there are light shaded boxes around some things (drop shadows incorrect?). Also, some of the stroked fonts had little open circles on the corners, like it was selected. When I print from Illustrator to local paper printers, the image is fine. I guess I need to speak to the printer, but for now I’m going through a third party. The original is 9”x12”, CMYK. I saved as “Illustrator CS4 EPS”, transparent, tiff (8-bit color), and under “transparency” I probably changed the preset to “high resolution” (can’t remember). From what I read in other posts, EPS is a black box for a printer that doesn’t understand postscript and that pdf would be better. Also, I read that maybe I should be using process or spot colors (couldn’t figure out which). Any guidance would be most appreciated!

    Agreed, I'm the printer's clilent, I need to meet the person/company doing the printing. I believe it is a small setup and was very surprised when my friend (the inbetween) brought me the sample print and he said the printer didn't have any comments or suggestions! So, I'll talk to hime, or, go to a place around the corner, a big business for our town, and surely they will be able to help me. Now, Grant, suppose eps is what I need, I see where to create the transparency preset. Would I change any of the options? The balance is set at 75. I'm not sure what that is doing, but I can read it. Thanks!

    Check out the "Overprint" fixes.
    It looks like the Frame graphics transparency shown in the manual for years now actually works.
    Not visible in edit mode, alas, but then EPS transparency never has been either.
    It's also somewhat amusing that the colors in the left (edit) and right (PDF) screenshot panes, both before and after fixes, are painfully mismatched.
    I've just tried printing off a page with a transparent eps and it doesn't seem to work.
    I've messed with the Overprint and Tint, but nothing seems to be happening.

  • Images with clear backgrounds please

    I import an image into iWeb - it always appears in a white box. Even if its an image thats been cutout in photoshop, with a 'clear' background. Tiffs work in other applications but images in iWeb have to be jpegs dont they? a tiff also has a white background anyway - i tried it. Anyone help?

    Images can be anything.
    Depending on my needs, I add EPS, Transparent Tiff, Transparent PNG, JPEG, Gif, Animated Gif, Pict.
    All made with Pages, Open Office, PhotoShop Elements and/or other applications.
    Here's a page with a vector drawing I made in OpenOffice, exported as EPS, opened in PSE, some fiddling, and then saved as an transparent Tiff.
    iWeb changed it into a PNG. [Voila|http://web.mac.com/wyodor/Organogram>
    And yes, iWeb has the habit to put a border round the images you drop on the page.

  • How can I save an image with background transparency as an eps in photoshop?

    I have to submit an eps of my logo and I would like it to have a transparent background. I have googled this many times, followed all of the suggestions and I'm still having trouble.

    Follow the help text in PhS CS2. I have shown importat guidelines by bold text:
    "To save a path as an image clipping path
    Draw a work path that defines the area of the image you want to show.
    Note: Paths are vector-based; therefore, they have hard edges. You cannot preserve the softness
    of a feathered edge, such as in a shadow, when creating an image clipping path.
    In the Paths palette, save the work path as a path.
    Choose Clipping Path from the Paths palette menu, set the following options, and click OK:
    For Path, choose the path you want to save.
    For Flatness, leave the flatness value blank to print the image using the printer’s default value.
    If you experience printing errors, enter a flatness value to determine how the PostScript interpreter
    approximates the curve. The lower the flatness value, the greater the number of straight lines used
    to draw the curve and the more accurate the curve. Values can range from 0.2 to 100.
    In general, a flatness setting from 8 to 10 is recommended for high-resolution printing
    (1200 dpi to 2400 dpi), and a setting from 1 to 3 for low-resolution printing (300 dpi to 600 dpi).
    If you plan to print the file using process colors, convert the file to CMYK mode.
    Save the file by doing one of the following:
    To print the file using a PostScript printer, save in Photoshop EPS format, DCS, or PDF format.
    To print the file using a non-PostScript printer, save in TIFF format and export to Adobe InDesign,
    or to Adobe PageMaker® 5.0 or later.   "
    An image with clipping path contains everything outside the path as transparent.
    Tested actually by PhS CS6.
    Photoshop is not the right tool. Better use Illustrator or InDesign (ID for logos which are not too complex).
    Graphical objects in IL or ID reside on a transparent background without any selection or clipping path
    (PostScript concept).

  • How do I invert colours on an EPS file with a transparent background in Adobe InDesign CS6?

    Help!!
    I'm fairly new to InDesign and pretty basic in terms of my knowledge but surely this can be done right?....
    I have a black and white EPS logo which I would like to be transparent and white to put on a different colour background? (I do also have a JPEG version of the logo too if that makes any difference)?

  • InDesign Help - eps file text going transparent.

    I am building a business card for a client and they provided me with an .eps logo. In the logo there is a white script font along the bottom of it with their saying. I place this into inDesign and everything looks fine until i .pdf the file and the text goes transparent so only the drop shadows on the letters are visible.
    - I have tried going into the eps and the text is already converted to curves so it can't be a font problem.
    - I changed the color of the text from white to 1% black thinking maybe the eps was dropping the color but i get the same results, even when i changed it to a hot pink as a test (same problem just a transparent pink).
    - I tried saving the file as an .ai file and bringing it in and I get the same problem.
    All of us in the art room have never seen this from the new CS3 lineup before and we are stumped. If you can come up with any suggestions on how to solve this it would be appreciated, The client needs their cards soon and I can't give them this without that line of script.

    The white is set to overprint. Open it in Illustrator and fix it. While
    you're at it resave it as a AI or PDF.

  • Placed bitmap eps files into PSD files has no transparency.

    What happened to the transparency in eps bitmap images?  I used to be able to create a duotone with transparency in earlier versions of Photoshop.  I would save a black & white image, as bitmap eps file.  I could import/place it into a psd file to create a transparent dutone image.  Now when I place into a PSD/photoshop inside the iamge is white and no transparency.  I'm using CS6.

    What happened to the transparency in eps bitmap images?
    I think eps supports Clipping Paths but not Transparency.

  • Why does placed eps file containing a drop shadow lose transparent background?

    When I place an eps file from adobe illustrator cs6, which has a drop shadow, into InDesign the file loses its transparent background and comes in with a solid white background. I'v selected the "Transparent" radial button in Illustrator while saving the file to eps but it doesn't work. Any ideas???

    EPS means Encapsulated PostScript (it's really PostScript code wrapped up in a capsule that allows you to place it into other applications as an image), and the PostScript specification doesn't include transparency. That's why even though you have transparency in the Illustrator image, it's format won't translate that transparency data into usable transparency when you place it into InDesign. Lack of transparency support is one of the main reasons people recommend not using eps in a modern workflow.

  • Import EPS and make transparent background

    Hi all,
    I'm basically a n00b with Illustrator.  I have an EPS logo (downloaded from here: http://www.allfreelogo.com/logo/federal-bureau-of-investigation-fbi-logo.html) and it imports perfectly to Illustrator.
    However, after I resize it, when I do the "Save for Web and Devices", it keeps creating my GIF file with a white background despite I've asked for transparent.  Is there a way to make that transparent?
    I'm sure it's one little thing I'm missing because I don't know Illustrator.  Thanks for any help.

    Here you go (hope this is the way to insert it...)

  • How can I save file in Photoshop with an transparent background as an eps

    I can save a file with a transparent background as an png and place it in a document and retain the transparent background. But my client requires eps file. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

    You could add a clipping path - look in the Paths panel menu.

  • EPS Graphic with transparent bkgd placed over shape: IDCS3

    In Photoshop CS3 I created a graphic of a basketball player and masked him out. I then deleted the mask, leaving me with just the player. I now have a document that is 8x10", 300 dpi, with a transparent background. I flattened it and saved it as a Photoshop EPS.
    In InDesign CS3 I created a shape layer.
    I then created a graphics frame and placed my graphic with transparent bkgd in it.
    I arranged the layers so that my graphics layer is directly above my shape layer.
    Why isn't the background of the graphics layer transparent? It does not let the shape show through.
    I tried this technique:
    Object>Clipping Path>Options>Detect Edges = This is roughly what I want, but the edges are ragged.
    What is this technique called that I am trying to perform? I can't decide on the vocab. to use to navigate through the help menus or forum topics here.
    Thank you.

    ^ Just a quick note on #2 that transparency *effects* (as in 50% opacity) are not supported. However, simple background transparency should be.
    The Photoshop trip is probably your culprit as noted by OldBob, but whenever you work with EPS, you should also set your import options for EPS graphics to "Raster preview from postscript" (or whatever the "from postscript" option is called). Without that option, drop shadows will generate around the bounding box not the shape of the EPS object. Not sure whether the background will be correctly transparent either.

  • EPS-- SVG  Conversion (Force white colored areas to transparency including background) ?

    Hi,
    I am trying to convert (export) an EPS image to SVG programmatically as follows, I am having difficulty in converting white areas on the image to transparency; could someone guide me what would be the solution please?
    Dim illusapp = New Illustrator.Application
    Dim illusdoc As Illustrator.Document
    illusdoc = illusapp.Open(fileStream.Name) //.eps file path
    Dim svgExportOptions As Illustrator.ExportOptionsSVG //Here I don’t have the provision of passing Transparency to True etc.
    illusdoc.Export(destination, Illustrator.AiExportType.aiSVG, svgExportOptions) //destination is .svg file path
    Thank you very much for your time in taking a look at!!
    -SG

    I need to do this programmatically ( I mean recognizing white spots on the .eps image and convert them to transparency).
    Right now, I have implemented a .NET Web Service which interacts with Illustrator on the server. So if a user request .EPS image to be converted to .SVG, he/she just calls the service method which takes .eps image as an input and returns .svg content as an output. Behind the scenes, service interacts with Illustrator and does the conversion.
    Below are few lines of code thru which I am achieving this. Part of this I would like to recognize the white spots/content in the .eps image and convert them to transparency before I convert/export to .svg file.
    Dim illusapp = New Illustrator.Application
    Dim illusdoc As Illustrator.Document
    illusdoc = illusapp.Open(fileStream.Name) //.eps file path
    Dim svgExportOptions As Illustrator.ExportOptionsSVG
    illusdoc.Export(destination, Illustrator.AiExportType.aiSVG, svgExportOptions) //destination is .svg file path
    Thank you all for your time; appreciate if you could share some of your thoughts on it.
