Epson 2450 poor scanning since OSX 10.4 update.

I have an old Epson 2450 Photo which used to work quite well using the Epson Twain software & PhotoShop Elements 2 in Mac OS 9.
Since upgrading to Mac OSX 10.4, the scanner doesn't do NEARLY as well. At first it wouldn't even recognize the scanner. Epson support finally came up with a download which at least allows scans, but it's very basic - no controls, and not very good film scans.
I have been advised to just use OS9 ("classic") but the Twain software no longer exists in OS9 - the download required that all old Epson software be discarded.
I'm trying Vue Scan in OSX, but the results aren't very good. Working with a professionally shot 35mm color neg on Fuji NPS 160 film (one of the few specific films said to be supported in the trial version) the color quality is very poor. Ed Hamrick's suggestion:"try 'generic'." doesn't do any better. Costco has NO problem printing this neg. (I got a 12"x18" print for comparison while trying to perfect these scans, just 3 bucks!)
Does anyone know how to make this scanner work as well as it did in OS 9 ?
Anyone have any ideas? Could I just discard the new Epson "Fix" and re-load the old software & use it in OS9? I'm a bit afraid to try it in case it will will ruin everything.

I've read several, (hundreds?), of these complaints, trouble is there are many different reasons... I'll name a few to start us off...
Using Delta Updates rather than Combo updates.
Certain Broadcom Chipset based Modems/Routers might work fine for months, but then won't with Macs. Many varied symptoms including yours.
Trashing these files and rebooting and setting up Network Prefs again...

Poor performance since 10.3.9 update from 10.3.8 -- need tune-up?

I've tried 10.3.9 for most of this month, just booted from my 10.3.8 backup, and there's just no getting around the fact that performance has suffered greatly since I updated from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9.
I can go back to 10.3.8 but it will be a long and tedious process (and will keep me from using an important application AFAIK) if anyone can help tune up 10.3.9 I'll be grateful.
Here's the problems.
1. Extraordinarily slow internet. Doesn't matter if I'm on dialup or using the library's wi-fi broadband. Safari is practically unusable. Firefox is barely better.
* Safari times out 7 or 8 times out of 10 urls. It first drops down a dialog box saying the server can't be found and when I click OK it then proceeds to load the page. This is on dialup or the free library wifi.
* iTunes - it takes 2 hours to update my podcasts at the library under 10.3.9 (no updates to iTunes) and I never had it take longer than 40 mins under 10.3.8.
* FTP - I don't recall the times anymore, but I've given up trying to use FTP at the library because it seems as slow as at home on dialup. If I need to FTP I do it over night on dialup.
2. Applications startup very slow. No less than 10 or 12 bounces before anything launches.
3. I can't burn CDs from iTunes any more.
Before updating to 10.3.9 I backed up, ran Disk Warrior, repaired permissions, and quit all other applications. I used Software Update to install the updates including QT 7.1.6 but not iTunes 7. [Software Update is showing the installed updates log as empty. :/ ] I repaired permissions and ran the crons afterwards.
Since then I've run Disk Warrior, ran Onyx to repair permissions, run chrons, empty all caches numerous times. I've zapped the PRAM. Checked for font duplicates. Disk Warrior again. Onyx again. Repeat.
Anything else I can do? Thanks.

I have been following the conversation, although not responding. Here are the options as I see them:
You can continue to trouble shoot your affected user account in the hope you can sort it out somehow.
You can create a new user account and move your data over.
You can backup, reformat, zero all data, re-insstall and restore.
Since there is obviously some kind of corruption of your user account, I think it best to go to one of the other two options.
I favor the last one. It is a bit more onerous, but it will start you out with a clean slate. If you are interested in going that route, here are some directions you might find helpful
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! Be sure you have a tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
Select Erase tab
Select the a volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. You could just do a simple Erase, but I think zeroing will be valuable in your situation.)
Click OK.
Click Erase button
Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install BSD Subsystems.
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update
Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.

Deskjet 2540 can't scan on OSX Yosemite

I am unable to get the Deskjet 2540 to scan in OSX Yosemite. It worked under Mavericks. Since upgrading OSX doesn't even seem able to recognize that the device is a scanner. I did a full uninstall and reinstall of the HP software. Printing works fine, as does making copies using the physical buttons on the device. Scanning options are greyed out in Preview et al., there is no scanner tab for the printer in System Preferences. Attempting to scan in the HP Scan utility results in the error "HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2540 All-In-One is currently unavailable. Please check if it is turned on and connected, or try again later."

I see you're experiencing scan issues. I would like to try and assist.
I would suggest deleting the printer from your print system, using this document: Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once you have deleted it, I would suggest verifying and repairing the disk permissions: About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature.
I would also suggest running your Apple updates: OS X: Updating OS X and Mac App Store apps
After the updates, I would recommend reinstalling the HP Deskjet 2540 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers.

Epson 2450 Scanner no longer available as an import into Photoshop

I am having a problem with my Epson 2450 scanner importing into Photoshop. Last week with thoughts of upgrading, I purchased an Epson V700. I installed the scanner but found it not to my liking and returned it. Yesterday I downloaded and ran the Uninstaller to remove the V700. This however deleted my 2450 driver as well. I reinstalled the 2450 driver from Epson but then, and after repeated attempts, found that the 2450 is not showing up as an import option. Please note that I am still using Tiger. Any suggestions to getting this all working again as it has for the past 8 years would be greatly appreciated. One simple use of an uninstaller has turned for the worse - I wish I had just kept the V700 installed and just ignored that it was still listed in Photoshop as an import choice. (Please note also, that I am a high school photo teacher and was planning on giving the 2450 to my school. I was not able to load the driver and use the scanner through Photoshop on our school Macs either.)

Epson 2450 Using Photoshop CS (v8) OS 10.6.3

Having trouble using my Epson 2450 scanner after installing OS 10.6.3 I am using an older version of Photoshop CS (I guess it would be version 8). I have installed the epson twain driver utility 2.77 When I select import and choose epson 2450 photoshop basically crashes. There is not an option in this version of photoshop to print using rosetta when I do a get info on it. I'm disappointed that I can no longer scan into photoshop. Any suggestions or remedies are much appreciated.

TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT THIS SCANNER AND SNOW LEOPARD DO WORK TOGETHER as I have previously posted. Epson advised to keep checking to see if they update their drivers for Mac OS 10.6.3 so that you can use the scanner from within Photoshop. I only hope that such posts such as yours don't discourage other users that use these discussion forums to help find answers to their questions. I AM lucky that I don't stop investigating issues that I have with my Mac due to incorrect or personal opinions that are posted in these forums.

Photoshop CS5 not recognizing EPSON 2450 flatbed scanner

I am on a MacPro....OS X 10.6.8. I am running Adobe Photoshop CS5. I need to be able to run my EPSON 2450 flatbed scanner through Photoshop. But when I go to File > Import > it's not there. Please explain where I can find the TWAIN plug-in, where to laod it and how to make it so it shows up under, "Import" so I can operate the scanner through Photoshop.

Scanning with TWAIN has become increasingly buggy.
Why not just use the Epson scanner software that came with the scanner?
That way you can continue to use Photoshop while using Epson to scan.
There are more features available from Epson than with Image Capture.
However, if you feel the need to use TWAIN, here is the link for Mac CS5 plugin.

ITunes 10.7 crashes all apps on Mountain Lion including Force Quit. First system wide prob with an apple computer since OSX introduced. Any ideas?

updated to iTunes 10.7 from app Store last night. After the update, iTunes opens then stalls with the "spinning pizza wheel". Force Quit is unresponsive and will not shut it down. If I then open other applications say Safari for example, the problem migrates over to Safari and it similarly stalls and becomes unresponsive. The only way to solve the problem is to manually shut the computer down. This is the most significant problem I have experienced on an apple computer since OSX was introduced because it impacts on Force Quit which means that you have to shut the whole deal down. There are obvious problems for use of Apple TV and apple store etc. ! I am running mountain lion 10.8.1 on a 27" iMac with 2T Time Capsule connected wirelessly. How do I downgrade iTunes back to 10.6? I had no problems with Mountain Lion or iTunes up to that point.

this is the exact same problem i've been dealing with for the past 2 days. after i installed itunes 10.7 for my iphone5 it would crash my mbp's lion system wide. i tried every solution i could find on google and i've actually had to reinstall lion & time machine my backups because of it. right now i'm too scared to redownload itunes 10.7. i actually feel like waiting for the "new itunes" that comes out in october.

Might be corrupted preferences (.plist)
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.image_Capture.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.image_Capture.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac and your scanner and try scanning an image.

Epson 2450 Failed on USB2.0, but not USB1.1

I installed the the XP USB 2.0 support driver which they have for Universal Serial Bus 2.0 Support in Windows XP (Q312370) as suggested by the information on the driver CD.
When I plugged my Epson 2450 scanner (It supports USB2) into a USB 1.1 onboard connector, XP could recognise it and it worked fine apart from XP was telling me that I have Hi-speed USB port available (which I have through MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU external bracket). The external bracket has 4 USB 2.0 ports, but Windows XP said I have 5. I don't get it.
Anyway, so I tried, unfortunately, when I plugged the scanner into USB2 connection. Windows XP did not recognise it and displayed it as a unknown device.
I try reinstall all the USB drivers, still does not work. MSI Australia said they use the Windows Update USB 2.0 driver with the external bracket at their office as well, but they have no USB 2.0 scanner to test.
They also asked me to try the driver that comes with the board on the CD (Directory USB\USB20\NEC\) even though it is intended for the use with other Windows operating systems instead of for Windows XP. But I tried, XP thought all the USB 2.0 ports of the bracket are USB 1.1, "Hi-speed device attached to non-hi-speed USB hub" appeared.
The following are what currently showing in my Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers:

Thanks RLH. But I tried and made sure all that, No, still doesn't work.
MSI Australia sent me a USB 2.0 driver to test. The result was: XP only recognised the Epson 2450 scanner for 3 seconds, then the scanner under Imaging Devices of the Device Manager disappeared from viewing for 3 seconds, then it appeared back on again. But finally after a few continous flashing of Device Manager together with the scanner icon appearing and disappearing from Device Manager, XP said "Device not recognised" again.
Well, not the end of the story yet. after XP did not recognised the driver message appeared for about 5 seconds. XP then said it recognised the scanner, but it also displayed "Hi-Speed USB device attached to non-hi-speed hub" again. That means XP treated the USB 2.0 bracket as USB 1.1 again.
I tried Repairing XP, but...it's the same.
MSI Australia ask me to flash the BIOS, even though I am using version 5.4, not the latest 5.5 (which came out not long ago). I am yet to flash it, but I am not familiar with it. I need to research more before I flash the BIOS.
Anyway, MSI Australia said they are waiting for the propert USB 2.0 driver for the KT3 Ultra-ARU to come out. If (hopefully I don't need to wait for too long) the driver is released, they will send it to me.
It's not looking good.
What a pity that Epson 2450 is just an excellent scanner and I just can't use it to its full speed.

Startup problem since 5/07 security update

I've been having serious problems with startup since the last security update. Startup hangs at the first gray screen or the while screen with the Apple logo. Sometimes multiple restarts get me to the login screen. Safe mode gets me there as well, but the next time I log in the same problem occurs. I have cleaned caches, deleted extensions, deleted fonts, used several shareware programs to clean up my startup files.
Yesterday, when I booted up, a small camera appeared mid-screen with a face alternating with a question mark. The camera blinks back and forth for a long time. Once startup made it to the login screen, but I didn't want to login, since I didn't know what it was. Today I tried to login again. The camera is still there--no surprise--but this time startup is stalled at the gray screen and the fans starts up and runs with no progress.
Any ideas? My iMac has worked perfectly until I did the last security update. I am pretty careful about downloads or opening any unknown files, so I'd be surprised if I have a virus. Others in my family use the iMac, but they're pretty saavy about viruses.
I'm about to reinstall OSX, but want to see if anyone has run into this and found a way around.

Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back with update or further questions/comments.

Scanning Broken after latest Mavericks update

After updating Mavericks to latest revision, my Epson Workforce 840 scanning functions are broken... Image Capture, doesn't operate the scanner properly, other applications that use Image Capture to operate the scanner, do not work... Very hobbled operation, I can instigate a scan, but they produce nothing and the system hangs or the application that I am using hangs..

This is a user-to-user forum and you're not talking to Apple here. So we can't "fix the problem" for you.
But here is a suggestion or two:
Try resetting your print system OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
Try uninstalling any Epson "utilities" , restart, and try Image Capture again.
See if there is an updated driver or scan utility on the Epson website.

Ever since the last iTunes update, my cloud movies and TV purchases all vanished from my iTunes library. I go to Settings>Store>Show Cloud Purchases, but Show Cloud Purchases isn't there. So, I go to the store, then click on purchases, and I download anything from my iTunes account. Now, I go to Settings>Store>Show Cloud Purchases, and it is back. I check the box, and my cloud purchases are again back in iTunes.
OK, I wouldn't bother posting this, but a day or so later, it all happens again. Cloud purchases gone, no option to fix in the Settings>Store menu until I go to the store and download something again.
How do I get iTunes for Windows to keep showing my cloud purchases without having to do this silly work-around every day or two?

Audiobooks are not avaiable for redownload from iTunes, though I suspect you may find they are still on your computer even if not currently listed in your library. This may help...
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
* Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
* Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
* Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
* Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
