Epson 2480 scanner issues

Hey
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on this problem we have been encountering. We have a number of emacs at our college, well about a hundred, which have started to have issues with our scanners. I have been finding more and more students complaining that their scanner is not responding at all. We run a server and all accounts are shared from there. The scanners in question are Epson perfection 2480's. When the problem students log on the green light on the scanner goes out and remains that way until the student logs out again. sometimes it is not on when a student is logged out. I have noticed that on some occasions too that when the emac is restarted the scanner will have it's green light on, but when the user-name and password screen appears it will turn off again.
So far the only fix I have found, is to log on the client machine as an administrator. After waiting a few minutes, or by running the epson scan, or photoshop the scanner will burst into life and start to work. I then log out and let the student log back in. The scanner will then usually be fine, until the computer is turned off.
The first things that jumps out to me is that this must be some type of preference problem as If I the admin can jump start the scanner, then something in the students accounts must be blocking it.
Can anyone give me any ideas as to what to have a look at, as I have been scratching my head about this for a while. Also with all of these mac's to look after it is also a bit of a pain having to log on as admin to resolve the situation when it occurs.
thanks
RDH

Hey JMVP
This problem has been around for a while at our sit and we have just had to maintain it. Last summer, I formatted all of our machines, and then set them from scratch. We have a number of machines ranging in age so when I tried to do an image of a master machine, it did not work on all and I ended up having to make about 5 images to cover them all.
All client machines have been installed and setup to be identical. (well as close as) we are currently running, 10.4.9 on our machines, but this problem has occurred through a number of different updates. I have downloaded 2 version of new drivers from epson, each still presenting the same problem too.
I notice that the regularity of this problem can occur if the machine shave been turned off for a while. Our students are also always unplugging scanners and USB's to plug in their own devices. I also notice that when a scanner is having the problem the green light is off on the front of the scanner. If I unplug the scanner, then light turns on?!? This is without a student even logged in. At first I was thinking that somehow the client is storing the last users preferences and that was disabling the scanner for anyone else, until I came along and logged in as admin. This seems to overwrite the problem, start the scanner and then anyone can use it again. Our mac's also ato off and auto wake so this may also be having some effect on why the scanners keep getting disabled.
The version of epson scan we are using is: 2.77E
Im not sure about the driver being enabled for one button push functions, but the scanner does offer that service. All of our students use the twain import in Photoshop to scan images in.
OK NEWSFLASH!!
Right I just went into find out if the USB section in profiler finds anything. In one of our rooms we have 18 macs. They were all tunred off at the wall, including the scanners. I turned them all on. The scanners all turned on and displayed a green light. As soon as the mac offered the username and password screen, all of the scanner lights turned off!! I unpluged each scanner and plugged it back in. with the USB cable pulled out, the light on the scanner came on. And as soon as it was plugged back in, out it went again?!?
I tired to log in on a student account and the scanner light stayed out and I got the error that I have been getting, saying there is no scanner attached.
I then logged in as a admin on the same machine, and boom, the scanner starts. I tried logging in as admin straight away on another machine and the same happens, the scanner wakes up!
Ok where do we stand now!, It's like the USB is being disabled after the power has been turned off to the mac.
As a note, all students do not have access to the profiler or system preferences, We have also disabled some applications acces on our mac so they don;t mess around, could that be part of it?
any ideas would be greatly received!
Thanks

  • Epson 2480 scanner issues UPDATE!

    Hey all
This is a carry on question from the post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=959762&tstart=0
After doing some extensive leg work I have managed to narrow down the problem that we are experiencing with of scanner problem on our emacs.
    The problem is as follows:
1.) The power is turned off to our emacs at night. When we turn them back on in the morning, the scanner will also tunr on until the emac reaches the log in screen.
2.) When a student logs in to their account, even with all group and individual preferences and application blocks disabled the scanner will not initiate!
3.) The only way to initiate the scanner, is to log onto the client machine as that clients admin user. 10 -15 seconds after successful log in, the scanner will spring into life.
I have installed all of the latest drivers, I have even wiped a machine and only installed the scanner software. Before using directory access to assign the client machine to our server. You could turn the mac on and off and it would see the scanner every time. As soon as I pointed the client to the server through directory access, this function was disabled as soon as the power supply was turned off. (I mean actually off at the wall too)
We are still looking for a solution to this, as we cannot continue logging in as admin on all of our machine daily.
I was thinking maybe the server was sending some forced preferenc to the client machine, which only the admin account could overwrite? but as I made a new group with no preferences and allowed access to all programs even the ones on the local client machine, I still got the same result. I also cleared all managed prefs and even some of the prefs from the client HD to see fi any of those were conflicting.
Has anyone got any ideas what I should be looking for???
    Thanks in anticipation

  • Epson 2480 Scanner doesn't show up in File Import menu in PSE 6

    Hi
    I'm on:
    Intel iMac
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
I recently upgraded from PSE 4 to PSE 6 and everything is fine. It delivers everything I expected but for one little thing.
Il have been using my Epson 2480 scanner with PSE 4 for years both on G4 and Intel based Macs. I never had an issue. The driver used to be listed in the File>Import menu.
After installing PSE 6 I uninstalled the Epson driver and installed the updated version.
The Adobe authored TWAIN.plugin is correcty installed in the Adobe Photoshop Elements 6/Plug-Ins/ImportModules.
It still works in PSE 4.
Yet it isn’t listed as it should in PS6. Did I miss something?
    TIA
    Nick

    Bingo!
I don’t repair permissions often. I probably should;)
I’ll check the Rosetta box when I need to scan stuff and I’ll let it unchecked the rest of the time. PSE 6 works perfectly well as it is.
BTW I read in the PS forum people say it was as shame to use a sophisticated soft like PS for such a trivial job as scanning. They suggested one could just use the scanner dedicated soft. I found the argument ludicrous. If I need to process the images with PSE it’s darn convenient to get them with PSE in the first place. Thanks to you I'll be able to do so.
Thanks for your help and patience, Barbara.
    Regards.

  • Epson V550 scanner issues

PSE 12 TWAIN plug in works for my Canon scanner but my Epson V550 doesn't appear in the File/Import menu. Ideas, anyone?

Is this scanner recognized by any of the other applications such as Microsoft Word?  If not have you tried updating the drivers for that scanner for your operating system.  For example, if your operating system is Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 then you need to look for Windows8 or Windows 8.1 drivers and also make sure you have the correct version such as 32 bit or 64 bit.

  • Epson 636U scanner issue

I have a very old Epson 636U (USB) scanner. I am trying to get a scan into my mac with Image Capture. Image Capture sees the scanner, and does an "Overview", but the "Scan" button never gets highlighted. Is there some magic button I need to press to make this work?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ben

    Figured it out...

  • Epson Perfection 2480 Scanner... not found under Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard won't find my scanner! It's there in Printer Sharing (why? who knows? it's not a printer) but if I click on it there's "no scanner found" Image Capture can't find a scanner attached. Epson's scanner software hangs. Any ideas? Nothing has changed except the install of Snow Leopard.

Thanks. I reinstalled it (again) and it worked - third time lucky, I guess. Not sure why it didn't work after the other reinstalls. I suspect that there are various drivers on the Epson site, and I may have downloaded the wrong one(s) previously.
The Epson Scan software works again and Image Capture now finds the scanner -- although if I use one I can't use the other.

  • Epson 836XL Scanner compatibility - HELP!

My wife's Mirrored Door G4 died on her a few months back and I got her a MacMini. It works great, but had no room for the SCSI card used to drive/connect her oversized Epson 836XL scanner. I tried to find a Mac SCSI to Firewire or SCSI to USB adaptor but none of them had 1) the proper pin configuration and 2) were supposedly only PC compatible.
I pulled the SCSI card out of her old computer and put it in mine. The computer recognizes it in PCI slot 5 as a SCSI Bus Controller so I'm pretty sure it is still working, even though her old computer motherboard was fried. Anyway, I hooked the scanner to my G4, installed the drivers and tried to use it but it the computer just doesn't seem to be seeing it. I know the scanner drivers were supposedly only good up through OSX 10.2.X but I would hope that it would still be usable under 10.3.9.
I even tried using the optional parallel port connector on the back of the scanner and hooking it up with a parallel to USB cable to my Mac but that didn't work either.
I'm about at my wits end. It worked fine on her G4 under 10.2.9. I would hope that it would work on my older computer even though my OS is a later version. It just doesn't seem to be able to be recognized by my computer. A new oversized scanner runs in the $1500 range and that is a bit more than we can spend.
    Anyone have any ideas?
Here is the SCSI card info, if it can be useful:
    Type: SCSI Bus Controller
    Bus: PCI
    Slot: SLOT-5
    Vendor ID: 0x9004
    Device ID: 0x5078
    Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x9004
    Subsystem ID: 0x7850
    Revision ID: 0x0003
Do I need a SCSI driver for the card maybe? Thanks.
    Graphite G4 733MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks Dave. You know what? I downloaded the trial version and believe it or not it worked! I didn't expect it to as I thought there was a connection issue, but the SCSI interface seems to work with VueScan. I was hoping I'd be able to get it to work with the Photoshop plug-in but I guess that is not to be.
Thanks so much for turning me on to this, you don't know how much time and $$$ you've saved me. It anyone knows if there any current drivers that will get it to work with Photoshop under 10.3.9 or higher, that would be great too.

    Hi,
You might try installing the trial version of
Vuescan. It says it supports your model scanner.

  • Epson 1240U Scanner problem in Snow Leopard

    Hi all,
Snow Leopard thinks my Epson 1240U scanner is a printer, not a scanner. Several attempts of reinstalling the scanner did not overcome this issue.
This means that, besides VueScan(!), other software doesn't (immediately) recognize the scanner, not even the build-in scanner software of SL (Image Capture). After several times opening and closing these applications, SL will recognize the scanner. But this is a very non-apple way of doing things. I used to scan a lot of documents with Acrobat, but that has become very cumbersome this way. The drivers of Epson are no help to this issue.
Does anyone have a solution to this (besides buying a new scanner )
    Message was edited by: Toon61

Unfortunately, there is no plan for a fully featured Snow Leopard driver for the Perfection 1240U. It is supported in SnowLeopard by the built-in ICA. It appears that you already have VueScan, which would be the other option that we could recommend. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Your other options are to downgrade your OS when using the scanner or to purchase a new scanner. The Perfection 1240U has been replaced in our product line with the Perfection V300 Photo.
    Hope this helps

  • Problem with epson v300 scanner and iMac?

My epson v300 scanner worked well with my G4, but when I got the iMac it scanned photos with parallel wavy lines in the pictures' dark areas (looks a bit like wood grain, only wavy like an EKG monitor line). Got a new one since the warranty had run out, but it did the same thing. Called epson It yesterday and their solution was to get another machine (scanner), which seems pointless, since it seems it's more likely a problem with this model. I've used Epson products for years and like them, (except for the cost of printer ink), and would probably get another of their scanners, but want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong myself first. Any advice?

  • Plug in for epson v750 scanner

For PS CS6 what plugin do I need to import into PS from my Epson V750 scanner? Does Adobe provide the plugin?

If the software that came with the Epson doesn't include a plug-in, then there isn't one except for those that other developers have made (VueScan, SilverFast). Adobe doesn't provide them, each scanner maker does.
However, a plug-in isn't the only way to scan into Photoshop. You can scan with the software that came with the V750, and set the software to save scans in a specific folder. You can then simply drag from that folder into Photoshop. I like to have Adobe Bridge pointed at the scan folder so I can see, keyword, and preview any of the scans as they show up, then edit any of them in Photoshop by pressing Enter/Return. Previewing your scan folder with Bridge is also a great first step to fast editing of scans in bulk in Adobe Camera Raw.

  • Photoshop CS5 not working with my epson 1640xl scanner on Mac OS Lion

Just loaded CS5 on Mac 10.7.  I downloaded and installed the  latest OSX Epson 1640xl scanner software, and also copied the Twain plugin from the Adobe Goodies CD to the Photoshop > Plugins > Import/Export folder.
Rebooted the computer, power off and unplugged my USB scanner, fired it back up, restarted Photoshop, etc.   It no longer shows up in Photoshop>File>Import
But Photoshop doesn't see my scanner at all.  In fact, the TWAIN plugin doesn't even show up in the plugins folder list.
Little Help?  How do I fix this? Everything worked perfectly with Mac 10.6  I also took the scanner into a epson dealer and the scanner works perfectly.
    [email protected]

That scanner is sort of old, and doesn't have a 64 bit driver.
As Noel said: use Photoshop in 32 bit addressing mode to work with older drivers and plugins.

  • Image Capture is not recognizing my Epson Stylus Scanner 2000

I have an Epson Stylus Scanner 2000 printer that scans, prints, copies and fax. I faithfully used these fetures in my home-based buisness with my G3 until I traded for a Mac Pro. I can print without a glitch, no problems there. How can I scan and fax??? I've been the the Epson website and didn't see my printer on the list of updates and recognized printers for OS 10.x. What can I do??? I need to keep my printer (which is in excellent working condition). Help me to scan and fax please...

You need Intel or Universal Binary drivers, which it seems Epson doesn't offer. What I use to use for my scanner (and still do actually) is VueScan. But I did end up buying a $79 Canon LiDE 70 eventually.
    http://hamrick.com
Epson Stylus 2000 is listed there as supported.
    http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#epson
A lot of older printers are supported by CUPS or GuttenPrint so take a look there (avoid the latest beta driver though).

  • How do scan strip negatives via my Epson 4990 scanner using Image Capture since upgrade to OS X Mavericks

Hello Everyone. OK I upgraded to OS X Mavericks without thinking that by doing this would stop me using my Epson 4990 scanner as no driver / software currently available - OK my fault. Anyway as Epson have not yet provided an update (yet?), all advice being recieved is use "Image Capture" for the time being. I have tried this along with using the "Help" files but unfortunately dont seem to be be any assistance. In simples terms I just wish to scan film negative strips (and transparencies) but it dont seem to be possible. Could any member advised how to get solve this problem as I am in the middle of a major scanning exercise with the worst case senario that I wil have to revert to my Windows based laptop to carry on and temporary reduntant my iMac which defeats the point of the exercise. Thank you in advance (hopefully)

Replay I received from Epson today:-
"In response to your email, we unfortunately do not have any update available for your model at present. We have no confirmed date for this but as far as we are aware this is likely to be in the next two weeks"

  • Epson 2450 Scanner no longer available as an import into Photoshop

    Hello,
I am having a problem with my Epson 2450 scanner importing into Photoshop. Last week with thoughts of upgrading, I purchased an Epson V700. I installed the scanner but found it not to my liking and returned it. Yesterday I downloaded and ran the Uninstaller to remove the V700. This however deleted my 2450 driver as well. I reinstalled the 2450 driver from Epson but then, and after repeated attempts, found that the 2450 is not showing up as an import option. Please note that I am still using Tiger. Any suggestions to getting this all working again as it has for the past 8 years would be greatly appreciated. One simple use of an uninstaller has turned for the worse - I wish I had just kept the V700 installed and just ignored that it was still listed in Photoshop as an import choice. (Please note also, that I am a high school photo teacher and was planning on giving the 2450 to my school. I was not able to load the driver and use the scanner through Photoshop on our school Macs either.)
    Thank you,
    Nick M.

Hello, did you repair Permissions & reboot yet?
    One possible option is Vuescan...
    http://www.hamrick.com/
It supports the 2450, can be made to send the scan directly to PhotoShop, and has many more features than Epson's SW does.
