Epson 3880 - Change Black Ink Problem

I realize that this is not an Epson or Adobe forum, but I'm hoping someone here can help:
I just purchased an Epson 3880 and hooked it up via USB to my 27" iMac that runs OSX Lion. When first powered up, the printer defaulted to the Photo Black ink. I made a couple test prints from Photoshop Elements 6 (PE6) on a sheet of supplied Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster. No problems there. But now I want to get serious and print images on Epson Velvet Fine Art paper. PE6 refuses to let me select anything other than paper that the Photo Black ink works on. The Printer Settings dialog box shows that the Photo Black cartridge is the active one.
So, I got on the 3880's LCD panel and manually made the change to the Matte Black ink. No joy - same problem. AND, PE6 does not realize that I've changed the active ink cartridge - it still thinks I have the Photo Black ink cart active. I thought that maybe it was because I have an "old" version of PE, so I whipped out my credit card and upgraded to PE10. No joy again - same problem. Arrrghhhhhh.....
I have NOT powered the 3880 off and on again, as I understand this causes some serious ink consumption.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get the system to recognize that I've swapped over to the Matte Black?

OMG, OMG - I figured it out....! They could not have made this any more difficult to uncover. It is in the - are you ready for this...? The PAPER SIZE dropdown box. Mine had 8-1/2 x 11 selected, as I wanted. But wait, there is more than one 8-1/2 x 11. If one selects 8-1/2 x 11 with Rear Feed, it all works as it should. You have got to be freaking kidding me!?!?!?!!! Who would have thunk to look there? Cripes!!!!!
Anyway, I'm all set so burn up some paper and ink - thanks PAHU and Shootist007 for your suggestions.
Ughhhhh.....

Hello , Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are not able to print in black ink on your HP Photosmart 7515, when you print a Test page the black prints on it. I believe it may be a problem with the black ink, and you see black ink on the test pages because it is producing a composite black, pulling from the color cartridges to produce black. I would like you to start troubleshooting here: Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Photosmart 7510 e-All-in-One Printer Series If you complete all of the steps in the document above and the issue continues, my own personal recommendation, not one of HPs, is to use the solution offered in the following video.  I only suggest doing this if the printer is out of warranty; How to fix a HP Printer, not printing black ink and missing colours  Although the printer might be out of warranty, if the issue persists, HP may be able to offer you something. • HP Officejet 7680 print issue alignment/ black ink problem

My printer is playing up again - this time it keeps trying to align, and fails (according to the readout on the screen) .
The black ink is also not working at all (trying new cartridge).  I suspect the two issues are connected? When I tried to print the Print Quality test page (as described here: Troubleshooting Print Quality Issues ) nothing involving the blank ink is printed at all, though the colours are all fine.)
Is it time for a new print head? Or what? I have tried my reset tricks described here on the forums from before  as well as the hard resets of #6 and #9 that I found on the forums elsewhere, to no avail this time. I am just leery of spending all that money which would need to be borrowed, if its not likely to be a dying print head..

Hi there HHjr, Welcome to the forums!
I am so sorry to hear about the problem you are running into with your 6500 Wireless not printing in black ink. Although it seems like you have tried all of the troubleshooting, please review the guide below just to make sure you've attempted all of the steps.

  • Black Ink problems.... again....

I'm going to be a lazy turd here and just put my problem up rather than investigate the 21 pages of dialogue that might contain the answer. So my hp 7515 grays out when I try to print in black. It will print fine the first half of a page, and by the end of the page it is almost blank. All my test pages print fine, frustratingly enough. The 'clean' and 'alignment' pages are both clandestine. Obviously, my printer can print in black. Why not when I want to print something for myself? The only thing I can think of, is that there are 2 black cartridges in my printer. One is a standard, and one is an XL. I assumed that with a completely full XL cartridge I should be able to print, as there is black ink there. Am I a moron for thinking I could get away with buying just the XL and have an empty standard in my printer? If that is the case, then what is point of even having the XL in the printer, when you can't even use it?

  • Brand new officejet 4630 with black ink problem and ok button doesnt work

Hi! I bought a new printer today, officejet 4630 and it included toner cartridges in the box. Iset it up like the sheet in the box said. After I had filled in date etc, I put in the ink ( and yes, remembered to check that it was compatible and take of the tape) Then this message showed in the display and still does:  "Ink cartridge(s) problem. The following ink cartridges must be replaced" and a black dot.  The cartridges were brand new and came in the same box as the printer. I have tried a reset ( taking out the cord for power supply, wait 60 sec etc) I also saw in Hp support you were to press "ok" to get rid of the message before restart. I can't press ok. It just beeps. No matter what button I press.   Suggestions? Of course I can try with a new cartridge, but to paying $20 for a new cartridge when it was included in the box and should work is not ok.

  • HP Officejet 6500 Wireless-Black Ink Problem

I have had my printer for years & it works really very well until yesterday.  I ran out of black ink, had some x-brand refill & tried that & got a message "cartridge damaged or out of ink" put another cartridge in, got the same message.  Went out & bought an HP cartridge.  Don't get the messages anymore-it just won't print black.  I have repeatedly cleaned the heads & only after I do the second cleaning it will print one page, but then the next page is only there halfway, then blank.  What gives???  I am very frustrated.  Thanks for help

I bought HP black ink for my 8600 Officejet Pro . It still is telling me to replace depleted cartridges and will not print.

  • Black Ink problem

I have a HP Photosmart 5520 that has stopped printing in black. Having replaced the ink cartridge with a genuine HP cartridge it still refuses to print in black. I have done upteen clean printheadts to ne effect. When I print out my Print diagnostics page, this prints in black, but the colour block for the black is plain, with no colour at all.
I feel this must be an ongoning problem for HP as I returned my last Photosmart for the same reason.

Hi everyone, I have a photosmart c5180 which doesn't print the black properly when photo paper is fed into the printer, if I set the paper type to plain paper instead of auto or photo paper the black works fine, Is this a firmware problem or some colour setting i have missed.  It also does this when i print from windows, linux and direct from the memory card.

Sorry no answer to your question but I have the same printer - how do you print on photopaper as opposed to a4 in the first place?

  • Concerning Epson Printer 4880: after changing the Ink from Photo Black to Matte Black I'm not getting the Epson Software in Photoshop and Lightroom. I can not select the paper medium, I don't see my profiles. What is wrong?

Concerning Epson Printer 4880: after changing the Ink from Photo Black to Matte Black I'm not getting the Epson Software in Photoshop and Lightroom. I can not select the paper medium, I don't see my profiles. What is wrong?

That is priceless!!!  Thanks!  I sure needed a good laugh after spending/wasting hours & days trying to either get my c6280 to give up on its Ink System Failure fixation, or find a decent replacement.  Unfortunately I need the Smart Web Printing feature that I guess only HP has, or I'd try a different brand. And now even HP has very few models with that available.
My error msg is a little different from those previously stated, but close:  0xc18a0201.  Even tho there were frustrations with my c6280, I did like several of its unique features which are hard to find now under $100.  I hate how HP (& I suppose other brands also) are CONSTANTLY changing models & then of course ink cartridges.
Oh heavens, I've had the c6280 a whopping 2 1/2 years!   I'm sure they want us poor slobs to have to buy a new one every year & a day!  To say nothing of the exorbitant prices for ink.  And now if this one is really dead in the water, I have SIX unused #02 ink cartridges which I cannot return---I got them in a combo pack, & for some reason have wound up with THREE lite pink & THREE lite blue cartridges, while having to buy extras of the other colors, that ran out before the others!!!   Yeah, & what's with that not being able to print in BLACK if a color runs out????
Anyway I really loved your essay!   It's a classic!  And says it all!  I hate that we have to be 'slaves' to the electronic 'wonders'!!!

    Hi @melvinc
    Welcome to the forums
I read about the issue you are facing on your printer, as it's now showing a problem with the ink system. I cannot locate a "8900" printer, could you possibly have the Officejet 8600? If so, please try out the steps from the guide below. If you reach a step where it asks to replace the printhead or printer, call us directly to see what your replacement options are with HP.

  • Elements 9 printing problems with epson 3880

    HI All:
Elements was working fine with epson 3880.
    Problems developed:
    1. Would print color pics in black and white only while in Editor; color pics printed ok in Organizer
    2. Now Print Preview does not work in either Editor or Organizer
    3. Now cannot print in either Editor or Organizer
I purchased Elements online.  I do not have a CD for reinstall.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I am having a similar problem that seems the reverse of yours in a way, though it may be related. Mine occurred only with the disk-installed version, not the downloaded trial version, and it was present from the start on my iMac. Everything worked fine with the 3880 and 2400 printing from the trial version of PSE9 (downloaded), just as it had with PSE8. CS5 and Apple Aperture are also installed and had been working normally. Then I received the install disk for PSE9 and installed it. After that, Preview did not produce a preview, PDF did not produce a PDF, and Print did not produce a print. CS5 also would not preview or print after that. Aperture, however, was unaffected. Some experimentation revealed that the problem occurred only with "Photoshop Elements Manages Color" selected and printer color management turned off. With "Printer Manages Color" selected, it printed.
I uninstalled both CS5 and PSE9 and reinstalled 8, which once again worked properly. Hoping there had been an install error as the cause of the problem with the original installation of 9, I then uninstalled 8 and reinstalled 9, and the problem recurred. So it's back to PSE8, and try to figure out how to call the problem to Adobe's attention without paying for a tech support session. Interesting that a glitch that causes a problem with PSE's printing can also affect PS's printing.
I suspect your problem is related to mine. Do you use a Mac? I think the reason the problem didn't occur at first with my system is that the trial installation is not the same as the paid one, if only because the trial version doesn't have the user sign up with Photoshop.com or whatever it is, which I had never done until I installed 9 from the disk. So it seems that something in the full, purchased version is causing the glitch. I have no idea why your version should have worked at first, then crumped.
Two more things I'm going to do now: reinstall CS5 on the iMac (should be OK, as it was before I got 9), and install 9 on my laptop to see what happens.
My advice for now is to download the trial version of 9, uninstall the current installation of 9, install the downloaded trial version, and (without entering the serial # from your downloaded version) see if it works properly. Then contact tech support. Especially if you have a Mac, tell them you have heard from others who have related the same problem to you.

  • HT204135 Photoshop CS5 Printing Problem on iMac with Epson 3880 printer

All of a sudden I can't print from Photoshop CS5 on my iMac with OSX Mountain Lion installed.  I am able to print from Illustrator, however.   Have tried to update the Epson 3880 driver. After clicking on "Print", it doesn't register with the computer, and from then on, the "Print" option is greyed out.

Are you using moab icc profiles or are you using one of the epson profiles?
I always use the moab profiles which you can download from their Web site. This way you are matching the specific epson printer with the specific moab paper.
At that point you change the printer manages color to Lightroom manages color and select the specific profile. Very easy to do - they even have instructions on the Moab site for installing the profiles if you haven't done that.
Once installed you can also use them through the system print dialogs in PS but it is really much much easier to use in LR - Since coming on board with LR last summer, I have switched to doing ALL printing from LR. Since you mentioned that you are having the same problem with LR and PS, I'm betting you are using epson profiles and this will solve your problem.
    Hope so
    Tom

  • Epson 3880 problems with Yosemite

I always used Epson 3880 for printing large (Super A3 size) prints and I have not seen a problem until I upgraded to Yosemite.
The printer is still printing OK, except the bottom 2cm are truncated, just white paper appears where there should be a part of the picture.
Since I print the same image as a test chart as before, using the same settings on my Epson 3880, as with Snow Leopard. I first suspected the PhotoShop, so tried using the Preview and other photo editing programs, the page is always truncated about 2cm, no matter what settings I used, Fit ti screen, or 100%, nothing affects the stubborn truncating. I tried downloading the latest Epson drivers, from Epson web site, even used their new Preview program, rebooted number of times, tried loading the paper from the front, from the rear, and the problem is persistent. I wasted half a dozen expensive Super A3 Premium Matte papers, not to mention ink.
Then, I tried booting in Boot-Camp, with Windows 8.1, installed the Epson 3880 drivers there and there was absolutely no problem. The test chart printed exactly how I set it up over a year ago, using borderless printing, with 100% coverage, no truncating!
So, I am suspecting the Yosemite has some issue with Epson 3880 and paper size?
    Can anybody help?

    Hi guys,
I am happy to report that my "truncating" problem with my Epson 3880 is now resolved.
I spoke today with Epson people and they just advised that I should install the previous drivers for this printer, v.9.33, which was for Maverick, not Yosemite.
I didn't know how to uninstall the current driver (v.9.34) built-in the Yosemite, so I only used the "-" sign under the printers to remove it.
I installed this one, and it works like it should be.
I am not sure if this is Epson or Apple problem, so perhaps Apple should act in embedding it in the Yosemite.
I will copy and paste this comment and send it to Apple support, as suggested by Cunnla (in case they don't ready this forum).
Thank you for all that tried to help.

  • When I print from the web, the print is blue ink, which I don't want and can't read. When I print from Word, it is black ink. What is the problem?

If I print an article downloaded from the web, it prints in blue ink, which is almost not readable. If I download it to Word or print a document stand alone in Word, it prints in black ink, which is what I want. I didn't have this problem before I upgraded to the new Firefox. Please help.
    Thanks
    Lee Gregg

I should also point out that when I connect my iPhone, it DOESN'T appear as a connected drive on the desktop. Not sure how this can be so, since the iPhone also has a drive and also functions as an iPod if I want it to. I must have changed some setting to achieve this non-appearance, but don't remember what I must have done.
    What's the secret?

  • Message tells me it's time to change my 200 black ink cartridge.

So, I installed a new cartridge from the same two pack I have been using.  Same message.
    Bought another one, same message.
Looked at contacts, looked clean, but GENTLY cleaned them with rubbing alcohol.
    Same message.
Any suggestions?  I'm pretty sure this copier/scanner is a little over one year old.
As it was quite reasonably priced, if I take it somewhere, it'll probably cost more to fix than a new one.
Bugs me though.  Shouldn't be a throw away item.
    Thanks all.
