Epson 960 really bad color w/Leopard

Hello all,
Since I purchased my iMac with Leopard in 2007, the color output on my Epson PhotoStylus 960 is really bad! It worked fine with my PowerBook running 10.4. The photos were great.
It has the correct driver, 3.09, no matter what I do I cannot correct the color. The nozzles are clean etc. It prints very dark, muddy and on the red/yellow/brownish side.
I have not tried to print via Photoshop cs5 which I just installed, and don't know whether that will make a difference.
Suggestions?
thanks
Adria

Welcome to the forums!
Sorry, but what Jens writes is completely wrong from beginning to end. I have been using the same Epson printer for 8 years, through OS 9, Tiger 10.4.2 to 10.4.11 and Leopard from 10.5.1 to 10.5.8 without problems.
Your problem may well be caused by the colour profile you are using - stick to RGB.
Last but by no means least are the Gutenprint drivers (which I use) which are superb and give you many more options than the original drivers:

  • Bad color after exporting in iMovie 11

I just got a Macbook Air (mid 2012 model) mainly for iMovie and I have to say I'm disappointed with the export quality.
I tried the standard export option and that results in a low bitrate washed out(color) video.
I tried just about every other option in the 'export with quicktime' including increasing the saturation using the filter menu.
But every option results in a video that has really bad color It's messed up and has a 'blackish' look. WHat I mean is that red lips look a little brownish pink, colors and blacks are darkened, they lack the shine the original vid had.
In iMovie, everything looks great. Can somebody please help me out?
The animation codec resulted in a 16gb file for a 3min vid but the colors were normal. But when I played it back in Windows 7, the colors were messsed up again.
Can someone please tell me the settings (when exporting in iMovie) for the best quality when played back on a PC?

Fortunately you didn't do anything wrong. Unfortunately iMovie is not geared towards import and editing of MiniDV video the way it used to be.
DV video shot on a MiniDV camera has lines of video 'interlaced' with one another. So you half the video lines at any one time and your brain combines them up into a smooth looking image. Ever since iMovie '08 came out including later versions ('09,'11), on importing the DV/MiniDV format or any video with interlaced lines of video iMovie drops, or deletes 1 whole set of scanlines. That means 1/2 of the video signal is discarded on importing it into iMovie. Then it attempts to 'regenerate' the missing video by 'doubling up' the video lines that still exist. Unfortunately the side effect of this process is quality visually is degraded, suffers and people are unhappy. The benefit to iMovie, the Macintosh and Apple is it's easier to 'playback' and preview the video as you skim it on the timeline. And it works on even the less expensive, less powerful macintoshes available on the market. You don't need the most expensive powerful Mac Pro to get good performance out of iMovie now. So that's the compromise and trade-off working with interlaced video on any version of iMovie made since roughly 2007. Prior versions of iMovie like iMovie HD 6 were very tailored to MiniDV camera video and were able to maintain the interlaced video data by design.

  • Printing to an Epson R2880 results in bad color (only from Adobe SW)

I've had a nice workflow that I've used for years.  I'm sure many of you would find it a bit tedious and I won't go into the details of it, but the important part is that I always printed out of Photoshop (CS6 Extended - now at 13.0.3 - yes I have the stupid Trial window bug, but that's another matter).  My monitors are profiled (no custom printer profiles, but I've downloaded appropriate profiles from PixelGenius for those times when I've needed them, and with my color management my prints have been fairly accurate.  I use and Epson Stylus Photo R2880 and I've been very happy with it.  I mainly work on a 24" iMac (2009 vintage).  Recently I decided to change my workflow entirely based on some of the tutorial videos I've purchased from LL.  I decided I was ready to integrate much more LR into the workflow, especially now that it includes soft proofing.  Because of the new workflow I was really looking forward to printing out of LR.  That should more or less get you current.
To date, I haven't printed with my new workflow and I'd say I haven't printed anything since 13.0.1 on PS and 4.1 on LR (not that I was printing from LR at the time).  Having not printed in a while I knew I'd need a head cleaning (sure enough I did) and, as is my habit, once the head was clean, I printed (from LR) a 4x6 of the image I planned on printing at a larger size.  It catches any lingering gunk after a cleaning.  The print just didn't look right to me (too dark and the colors were a little off).  I've encountered prints with bad colors once before and it turned out to be a driver issue.  In the process I found a great image that is indicative of some kind of problem and I keep both good and bad prints of it handy... just in case.  I decided to print this image, and sure enough it came out looking like the standard craptastic version I was getting with the bad driver ages ago.  Just to check out that it didn't have to do with my new process, I printed the same image from PS (which worked fine last time I printed this image).  It too came out all wrong (the same all wrong as LR).  Since the bad prints looked just like the old "bad driver" prints, I figured I knew what was going on and worked with Epson to reset my print pipeline and reinstall my printers (I also have a Workforce 845 for "throw away" printing and for my wife to use).
With new installs for my printers in place I went ahead and printed again... and again it came out wrong.  I was, to say the least, despondent.  As a final sanity check I loaded the image up in Nikon Capture NX2 (version 2.3.1) and did a print.  All of a sudden the print came out perfect.  It matched my old "good" prints and, just as importantly, was a dead ringer for the image on the screen.  This is where I find myself.  Apparently color management is broken in my Adobe products, but works fine in my Nikon software.  I'm at a bit of a loss.  I'm 99.999999999% sure that I'm printing out of LR, and especially PS, correctly.  Anyone have any ideas?  I'd love to be able to print again.  Printing out of Capture NX2 is really not a great option.
    Thanks in advance,
    David

I agree this whole issue is confusing. I have been on the issue (proper printer driver behavior and proper application behavior) using Apple's new print path for a few years now, so I will try to make an attempt to clear up as much confusion as possible.
If drivers and applications are working (written) properly this is how it is supposed to work.
When printer manages color is selected in an application print dialog then all functions of the printer driver are available.
When applications manages color is selected then Color Matching is grayed out defaulted to ColorSync, and the property written print driver defaults to No Color Adjustment (Epson) or No Color Correction (Canon).
See attached examples of both Epson 9600 driver version 8.19 and Canon iPF driver version 2.14.
Epson can and has definitely gotten it right with their latest drivers.
Canon on the other hand uses a special case file (AppColorMatchingInfo.xml) which list the applications that use Apple's new printing path. New application like Photoshop CS5 will need to be added to this file or the driver will default to color management when application manages color is chosen which results in double profiling.
I see nothing that indicates to me that neither Apple or Adobe have problems or bugs in this printflow. Only drivers (and old drivers) that are not written correctly for Apple's new printing path seem to have these problems with double profiling. That being said, do I agree with Apple's approach regarding the new print path? NO. It appear to be an attempt to idiot proof printing using application manages color printing, although it is claimed to be necessary for 64-bit applications. I personally would prefer to use the old print path (like still available in Indesign) where all options are available in the driver regardless of what CM setting I choose in the application print dialog. But it is what it is.

  • Video quality in scope is really bad and dark

When I send my sequence from Final Cut Pro to Color, why does the video in the scope area come out so bad where I can barely see anything? Basically the video is nothing like the quality in final cut pro and the picture is very very dark.
When I see the tutorials online of the videos being sent to color from final cut, the quality is exactly the same and they don't do any adjustment.
Can someone please help me fix this? I work with AVCHD. Thanks!

    Thanks George.
Now the quality is not "really" bad anymore, it is bad. ;-)
The quality got better, but still there is a difference between drawing shapes and cell borders. And the difference is causing problems with customers, who are demanding professional quality.
Here is a .jpg of the original Excel table. The drawing shape is the outer one, the cell borders are the lines beneath the data. Both line types are very delicat. This is how it should be.
And this is how it looks after a pdf-print with setting "high quality print" (2400 dpi).
The outer drawing shape is ok. The thin horizontal lines are twice as thick than before.
I know, it is about details. But those details make the difference between a professional and an amateur performance.
Do you have another idea, how to improve the pdf quality?
Thanks for your help so far, I appreciate it.

  • ITunes 11 sounds really bad any fix?

I noticed that the new iTunes sounds really bad compared to other players like VLC or Quicktime any idea how to fix this.
I tried to adjust the equalizer and the sound enhancer and no luck, it is definitely not the speakers because the same song sound great with VLC or Quicktime, all I try to download is high bitrate songs like 320 kbps.
    Appreciate any help!

    Hi Doug,
Not at the moment unfortunately. Apple did use the glass effect shelf dock on the side in the development versions of Leopard, but took it out and only used it on the bottom in the final release because of a few problems with the reflection and stack effects. I'd bet that within a few months they'll be rolling an update out which will give you this option if you really want.

  • Satellite M115-S1061 - display issue - bad colors

According to my daughter, her Satellite laptop running XP-SP2 suddenly went dim. At first I thought it might be the backlight inverter so I obtained a replacement but changing that failed to make any improvement.
Experimenting with the display settings it became apparent that many of the display colors were not what they should have been and I began to think something had happened to the LCD or its cabling causing the loss of one of the primary colors i.e.: blue however, upon rebooting I observed plenty of blue from the diplay until XP fully booted.
While changing themes and setting in an attempt to obtain a mere usable display, it became increasingly obvious that there is some type of video inversion going on.
That said, I can find no setting that would could cause this or any similar report of this malady. I have swept for any virus and gone back several restore points with no findings or imprivement.
The driver has not been updated so there is no ability to rollback to an earlier iteration and a search for an update indicates the current dirver is the latest.
Also, as noted, during initial boot-up the display appears to be of relatively normal brightness and the colors are as they should be...
It is not until the XP desktop launches that things go astray.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as school is back in session and I either get this resolved and get a new laptop!
    TIA,
    Bob

    Hi
    > Also, as noted, during initial boot-up the display appears to be of relatively normal brightness and the colors are as they should be... It is not until the XP desktop launches that things go astray.
According to your description I believe that this might be a graphic card problem.
I would really recommend connecting an second, external display/monitor to this notebook to check if the same bad colors would be visible on the external monitor.
If the same bad colors would appear at the same time on the second monitor then the issue could be really related to a bad GPU chip
In such case a replacement (motherboard) would be necessary

  • Bad color profiles on B8850

posted in another forum but thought I'd try here before I lose my mind trying to figure this out...
I think perhaps my color profiles are bad?  Here's the situation:
    1) printed a color wheel image on plain paper to test what colors I'm having problems with, and everything looked fine.
    2) printed the same color wheel on photo paper and the oranges are just dead, really grey looking, but the rest of the colors are fine.
So, seems like the question is why are my photos not printing correctly on photo paper but do on plain paper?  Any ideas or suggestions?  Bad color profiles or something for the HP Photo Paper?
I'm losing my mind trying to figure this out.  Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
    cheers,
    Aaron

Every type of paper accepts ink a little differently. If there is a setting that matches that particular paper right in the driver preferences available, I would try that. However, if that is what you are using, then try a different selection, or go into the color management tab (depending on operating system, drivers installed basic versus full) and adjust colors that way to improve the output on that media.
This might offer some additional help:

  • I use my own color profiles from Photoshop CS6/Mac Pro - how do I turn of Epson Artisan 837 printer color management?

I use my own color profiles from Photoshop CS6/Mac Pro - how do I turn of Epson Artisan 837 printer color management?

Choose Photoshop Manages Color in the CS6 print dialogue. At the top, click the Print Settings button and disable any color management settings for the printer.
Edit: Correction, that's CS6 in Snow Leopard. In Mountain Lion, if you check the print settings, color management for the printer should automatically be disabled when using Photoshop Manages Color.

  • Photoshop CC really bad lagging on new rMBP

I resently bought a new Retina MacBook Pro 13" with a nice fast 2,8 i7 proccesor and a big chunk of 16 Gb ram. After using it on my older iMac I was exited to use it on my new MacBook. But its lagging really bad. It makes it unusable for me. I don't work with large files and we mostly use it for small UI design. I use a Bamboo Wacom and use OpenGL is on. when turned of its a lot faster but this results in masive graphic bugs.
Anyone know how to fix this? Because I'm really thinking of switching to Sketch 3 (http://bohemiancoding.com/sketch)

Well, something is up with your system to make it slow.
Do you have any third party plugins? Have you tried disabling them?
Do you have any utilities that would interfere with other applications (antivirus, firewall, etc.)?
And the "graphics bugs" mean that you have a driver problem which will have to be addressed by Apple.

  • Firefox behaves REALLY badly at random times and I'm worried about it?

So here's what happens. This happens at random times, unexpectedly. I click on a new link, any link, and suddenly, Firefox blares up, automatically turns to private browsing, and goes to a bunch of random websites.
Then, it lands on ''www.xnxx<!-- -->.com'',('''edit''', un-linked -J99 ) which I have identified to be a pornography website. After that, it suddenly picks on a random porn video and crashes before the video plays.
This really worries me, because just before this first happened, I had done a quick scan with both Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro, and there was absolutely NO problem.
Not only that, I had gone only to trusted websites.
I'm a high school sophomore, so this could turn out REALLY badly for me if someone sees this happening and thinks that I'm TRYING to watch that stuff.
I have already sent a crash report to Firefox and included the website that I crashed in, which is the porn website. I haven't sent any other details, though.
Could I be getting hacked? I don't think so, because this only happens with Firefox; Chrome, Opera, Maxthon, and IE don't have this problem.
I'm running Firefox 15.0.1 in Windows 7 x64 (why the crash report said Windows NT x86, I have no idea).
    PLEASE help me fix this!

On looking at your System Details aside I note that you include a Crash ID.
That particular crash is probably related to use of Norton software. You may find that you can use the Norton security software without crashes if you disable the '''Norton Security Safe '''feature (Please confirm - or otherwise - that you are using that ). Note I am not suggesting you turn of the security software, just the utility/toolbar.

  • App for Windows 8 are really bad

The apps Microsoft made for Skype are really bad.
Any chance for a update so you have some chance of getting to things like call and chat and make it more clear who are online.
Out of a lot of bad apps for windows 8 this take the cake!!

Is there a reason "Elaine" (http://community.skype.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/88058) had to edit/moderate EVERY one of the posts here?
This thread started some time ago, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the word "sucks" was replaced with "are really bad" in the last 12 hours.
The only reason I bring this up is because this is censorship and let me tell you Elaine that it is NOT helping Microsoft/Skype's case here!
If something SUCKS it means it IS REALLY BAD. The word "sucks" is VERY well known throughout the english speaking world to mean this. Any moderation on the grounds that the moderation was done "In deference to international sensibilities" is ridiculous! This stinks of corporate censorship!
Rather than censor everyone's comments, how about you (the company) just fix the issues and let us know they are fixed OR if fixing them isn't going to happen in the near future at least let us know that you're working on it!
I have not seen even one official comment by Skype or Microsoft staff regarding this issue! NOT ONE! That implies to me that there is something seriously wrong and its almost definitley not going to be fixed any time soon!
Perhaps after all these years of being a happy customer it is time to start looking at moving away from Skype to another service...

  • Mail handles .Mac really badly-what's up?

Since I put my .Mac email account into my Mail application, it has worked really badly and I am considering just deleting off the .Mac account and not using it anymore as it is so annoying. Essentially, having the .Mac account in Mail slows everything else (my other email accounts) down to a ridiculous level. When I check "All", and sometimes when I send even one email, the Activity Viewer shows me that Mail is struggling to open .Mac mailboxes and stuff like that, and while it is struggling to do various things with .Mac, including synchronizing, the other email accounts are held up in the queue (ho hum... very boring). To prevent this, I went into the .Mac account and unchecked the "Include when automatically checking for new mail", but this has no effect whatsoever, probably because I usually check for new mail manually anyway.
I have two Macs at present, an older G4 flat panel iMac (1.25 Ghz), and a brand new dual core intel MacBook (2Ghz) and the problem is exactly the same on both Macs. Anyone having similar problems or knows a fix to this? Would love to hear!

There is a setting under the Advanced tab for the
account preferences to not keep all messages and
their attachments available for offline viewing but I
don't use this setting and don't experience the same
    problems.
To clarify, do you mean that you "do not" keep all messages (etc.) available for offline viewing, or that you "do" keep all messages (etc.) available? At present, I have this option to "keep all messages and attachments available for off-line viewing" checked positive, by default I presume.
After first creating the account if there
are a number of server stored mailboxes and messages
available on the server, the mailbox and message
synchronization process takes longer than normal and
the time it takes for subsequent synchronization
should not be a real long process unless a number of
changes have been make with server stored mailboxes.
Odd thing is that I only have one saved message in the .Mac account, and that is a tiny weeny one (about 10K) with no attachments or anything! By the way, since I have just been going through everything all over again, I notice that what really seems to be holding things up (I've now changed synchronization to "manual" on both computers) is when I "Get Mail" and Mail is trying to open the .Mac mailbox - this goes on interminably (as I can see in Activity Viewer).
Try using the Rebuild Mailbox function on all server
stored mailboxes. All messages will disappear
temporarily and the mailbox will be resynchronized
    with the server.
Sorry for being dense, but I've been all over my Mail application and all over my .Mac settings and I can't find this "Rebuild Mailbox" function. Could you please tell me exactly where I can find this Rebuild Mailbox function?

  • Screen flickering really bad after unplugging external monitor

    Hello,
Since I updated my Macbook Pro 13' Retina (inch, Early 2013) to Mavericks, almost averytime I unplug my external monitor or TV, the screen starts flickering really bad. This is the screenshot of the issue. Sometimes you can see all the apps opens, but the "flicker" effect takes over the screen, making it impossible to user the computer. The only way I found to use the compuer again is restarting it. It's really weird.

    Howdy inireugg,
We've an article that provides a host of helpful information and tips for resolving issues with displays.
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:

Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the systemYou can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
