Epson Perfection Scanner Woes/Intel iMac

24" Intel iMac running OS 10.4.8, 250 GB HD, 2.16 GB RAM
Epson Perfection Scanner 3170, previously ran smoothly on old G3 and OS 9.2.2
I am trying to get my scanner to work with my new iMac - trying for the first time since purchasing the machine to use this scanner, which I was told by Apple was compatible. I did get it to run one scan this evening even though it kept quitting out; then it wouldn't open and told me to check the connections (fine). I am trying to "Scan to Application" - Photoshop for scanning photos into the computer, on a deadline, naturally!
Before anyone suggests that I do a search, I found this thread and followed instructions:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1607880&#1607880
Uninstalled the Epson apps and prefs as per Joe Gramm's directions. I reinstalled from the Epson software CD, downloaded the 11928 driver from Epson (the latest one) and got the ESP3 patch as well (see thread, which I hope all installed where they were supposed to go).
When I press the button on the scanner that opens the Epson Smart Panel, nothing - no icons - are there for me to select. If I click on Epson Scan app. the scanner will preview and scan whatever is in on the glass but it does not "know" what to do with it once it's done. The JPEG doesn't appear anywhere. I keep waiting for the next window to open up so that I can select the tool box icon to select Photoshop as my application, but it doesn't open and I don't know what to do next. I always had an item in the Apple menu on my old mac that selected the scanner and would like one in the dock - shouldn't something be there?
I will be emailing Epson as soon as I am done here and would appreciate any help as soon as humanly possible as I have to make a reel for myself using portfolio pictures for an interview this weekend! GAH!

I was having problems running EPSON Scan.app. I went to this site:
and followed the instructions below EPSON*.ds file, and deleted all but the scanner model that I had. It worked for me!
Also if your running Adobe CS3 on an Intel Mac then go to this site, if the TWAIN driver isn't working. I did Solution 2: and it worked for me. The latest epson driver is still PowerPC.

  • Epson perfection scanner

i had problems a few months ago with my epson perfection scanner not being recognized by my computer. the green 'on' light would be half illuminated when the usb cable was plugged into the computer. this occurred after stupidly moving a bunch of files around and then forgetting how to restore their original placement. i moved files because i was unable to change the name of my home folder -- as this computer is a hand-me-down -- and did not want to have to look at the name of the home folder any longer for personal reasons. silly, but true.
i did manage to get the computer and scanner to communicate once again, but the connection has since disappeared. i downloaded a demo of vuescan which initiated the connection and then was able to open up the epson scan program after that. i am trying to understand just how drivers work and how these two pieces of equipment communicate so that i can do my own troubleshooting. the epson troubleshooting guide is useless -- after ruling out that the printer isn't plugged into an outlet or into the computer, it has absolutely no suggestions for troubleshooting. no software advice at all. i'm going to continue playing with this problem, but if anyone can explain to me how drivers work and how the computer and the scanner communicate, it might help me out. it might also help a lot of other people out, as i see from the discussion boards, this sort hardware communication problem comes up a lot in various manifestations.
    thanks.

Those are good suggestions, but unfortunately, in my case, the latest driver and a re-install of the software did nothing to help. The only thing that got things partially working was downloading the demo of vuescan, which I am hesitant to purchase as the demo seems a bit buggy -- but then again, this may be something to do with my computer and not the program. I'm not sure. I wonder what it is about the vuescan program that immediately recognizes the scanner when all other applications, including image capture, fail?

Unable to find driver to run Epson perfection scanner 1640.  Did operate under OS 10.7.

Found it!  Preferences and selected it under scanners.

  • Compatibility of epson scanner w/ intel imac

I have 2 new intel imacs, as well as a G4 imac. I'm trying to connect my new Epson scanner (Perfection 4990 Photo). When installing the software, it is looking for a classic environment. The online drivers from Epson's website seem to be for v10.4.4, and I'm running 10.4.10. Does anyone know whether this Epson scanner is just plain incompatible with the intel steel imacs? I have tried to contact Epson in various ways, all with no success. I'm a graphic designer and have previously had success w/ Epson scanners, but I'm tearing my hair out and ready to pack it up and return it for another brand. Their lack of support is outrageous. Does anyone share this experience or have any advice??? I'd appreciate it.

What do you mean that it is looking for the classic environment?
Are you able to open the .dmg successfully?
BTW, this is the discussion area for the much older iMac G3 CRT. You should post future questions in the Intel iMac discussion area.

  • SCSI scanner to Intel iMac - USB or FW converter?

I need to connect my Epson SCSI scanner to my new Intel Duo iMac. I see there are both SCSI to USB and SCSI to Firewire converters out there, but don't know which would be the better and/or cheaper. This would NOT be a high demand thing, I just hate to not be able to use my scanner occasionally.
Is there a device that will connect more than one SCSI device?
    Thanks!

(it's still a mess down here...)

Hello, Greg. This is the forum for G5 imacs, rather than intel ones, but first of all I would look to see if there is an OS X (not Classic) driver for your scanner. Frankly, in your situation I would replace the scanner, even if there is a driver.
BTW, your system info says you have 9.2, which is not possible on an intel mac.

  • Epson perfection scanner error -9930

I have an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo scanner that worked perfectly until my OX system was updated to v.10.8.5. Now when I try to scan, the scanner warms up and starts to work and then I get an error that reads "com.apple.imagecapturecore error -9930". I can't get the darn thing to work. I searched online but what I found is from 2010-2011 so I am not sure if those fixes will help.
Any advice on how to fix this would be great!

Have you read for possible solutions over in the "More Like This" thread over here?----------------------->

  • Epson Perfection Scanner v700 stopped working on iMac 10.9.2

I used to be able to use the scanner with the EPSONScan.app software.  Now, I get an error message "Cannot Communicate with Scanner".  I have unistalled the scanner software and drivers and removed it from System Preferences then reloaded Epson SW from Epson web site but still get error message.  I have also uninstalled the Epson SW, deleted the scanner and then added the scanner back without installing the Epson SW.  The iMac recognizes the scanner and I am able to use the scanner with ImageScan but it is far from the functionality I need that EpsonScan has.  I have also tested the scanner by loading the Epson SW and scanner to my PC laptop and it works fine.  Strange thing is it use to work on my Mac and Epson support says that the latest SW is supported for 10.9.2 but I cannot get it to work.

Download http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1398 and if that doesn't work, then download Epson's 10.9 drivers again.
Note: many scanner software require you to drag the marquee over the virtual scanner image on your screen before you can begin the scan.    This gives it an idea of how big an area to scan.  Without dragging the marquee box over the area you want to scan, the scan button may not solidify in black.

  • IMac (2013) Yosemite 10.10.2 using Epson Perfection Scanner which I keep losing and have to cycle or search for to re add.

When I select Epson scanner and select epson scan control (which does not display automatically) then the Scanner disappears and I have to add again or cycle to get. Happens every time I scan.

I have no furthur use of this question. Loose Nut on the keyboard!!!!

  • Installing Epson Perfection scanner 4490 Photo

I have just received my new iMac, and I want to still use my Epson scanner 4490 Photo. I have installed the scanner software from Epson, but this Mac doesn't seem to recognize it. Are they not compatible? What can I do?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you try Software Update? I ask because according to Apple's Mac OS X v10.6: Printer and scanner software says it has a driver for 10.6.

  • Finder Right Click Woes - Intel iMAC 20" Core 2 Duo (NEW)

Okay, I was hoping someone can check this for me on their new iMAC. I have found an issue where if I right click (or control click) three or more times in a row on the desktop or any other finder window, finder performs a relaunch. I am hoping that its just a bug with the new iMAC. But, either way its rather annoying.
    System Information:
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.10 (8R4031)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 8.10.3
    Boot Volume: Macintosh HD
    Model Name: Mac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B00
    SMC Version: 1.20f4
Thanks if anyone can assist. I have been on the phone with MAC support now for a little more than three hours. Next step from them is reload the OS. But, this is a factory installation and I havent had time to do much but copy stuff from my other MACs.
Thanks for any advise or if you have the same issue.
    Best regards,
    Jason

    Yo Dave:
After performing the re-installation (per technical supports suggestion) every thing worked fine. Then looking at your post I really wanted to know what started this whole mess in the first place. So, I started StuffIt Expander and after the initialization of the application the issue came up again.
Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. You were correct. I had installed StuffIt Expander Deluxe 11.02 (which is the latest version). This application installs a contextual menu in the /Library/Contextual Menu folder. The file is called StuffitCM.plugin. By removing this file the issue is now gone.
Stuffit still works now even with this file removed. So, all is good.
Again, Dave thank you for your insight.
    Jason

  • How do I get Photoshop CS6 to recognize the Epson Perfection Scanner 4990 so I can scan and import

Clicking File > Import does not show the scanner.  I have downloaded the latest drivers for the scanner.  The OS is Windows 7 64 bit.

Download the TWAIN plug-in from Adobe Exchange.

  • Just bought a new imac with OS 10.10.2- now I have a problem. Cant' use my printer (Epson Stylus 1280, or my tablet Intuos 3, or my scanner Epson Perfection 3200- can't get new drivers and can't afford to replace with new.

Trying to find an affordable answer. My Epson stylus photo 1280 printer is not compatible with Yosemite, neither is my Intuos 3 tablet or my Epson perfection 3200 photo scanner. I need to find second hand options.
What are the options without buying all new everything? What models and drivers are available that are compatible with Yosemite OS 10.10.2?

I know I have to give up on the printer and scanner- but I am going to try to find something to keep my tablet going for awhile.
Are you actually reading the responses that people are giving you?
    1. Your printer will work with Gutenprint support, possibly will work with 10.9 drivers.
    2. Epson has a scanner Yosemite driver for your scanner.
    3. And Wacom has a driver for your tablet.
You have no reason to be that miserable, all things considered.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 does not recognize Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner from "File"/"Import"

I just upgraded from Photoshop Elements 6 to Elements 11 on a brand new iMac running OS X 10.8.2, but Elements 11 will not recognize my Epson Perfection 4990 PHOTO Scanner as an option to import from when I click on "File" then "Import." Is there a Plug-In that may be missing for this to operate as it used to in Elements 6 running on an older G5 Non-Intel processor?  I don't have the new Elements 11 Disk to copy anything from, since I downloaded the program directly from Adobe.

  • Epson Perfection 1260 scanner indisponible

    Hello,
Depends on what version of Mac OS X is installed. You will require classic mode to use this scanner.
Macintosh computer (blue and white G3, G4 or higher, or iMac) running Mac OS 8.6 - 9.2.2, (OS X 10.1.2 Classic mode only*).
Note for Mac OS X users: You can use the scanner only in the Classic mode. If you are using a version earlier than 10.1.2, switch to Mac OS 9 to use the scanner.
You can install the scanner software while in classic mode.
    Hope this help.

  • HT3669 My Epson Perfection 1200 scanner functions as a flatbed scanner but when I try to scan transparencies the control panels change in  Image Capture but the scanner bar will not complete the overview scan  & cannot travel beyond the first 2/3 centimet

Epson Perfection 1200 scanner continues to function as a flatbed scanner but when I try to scan transparencies/film negs the control panels change in  Image Capture but the scanner bar will not complete the overview scan  & cannot travel beyond the first 2/3 centimeters. All the communications seem to recognise the scanner and the mode for the intended scan but the necessary overview scan is not completed, nothing comes up on the Image Capture scan window. If I unplug the film adaptor I can get a document scan. When I plug in the adaptor again the Image Capture details change which allows me to select the type of scan required but when the scanner attempts an overview scan it is unable to complete it.
I have had the scanner from new (12 Years) and have previously scanned slides and film with the adaptor but maybe this was before I upgraded my computer (imac 27").
Do I have to buy a new scanner?  It seems so close to working correctly.
I have downloaded the Epson recommended driver (5.4) and have Epson Perfection 1200 6.6 Universal showing in the Applications List.
Any thoughts or observations would be much appreciated before I go out and spend money an new hardware.
    Thanks

I have same issue - have you solved this yet?
