Epson Printing with Tiger 10.4.11

Thought I'd enlist the help of the "heavy hitters" of this forum...
You may know of this problem, but I just became aware of it. Upon reactivating my trusty Epson Stylus Color 1160 printer this week (and a long while since upgrading from Panther), I discovered that the Epson printer drivers no longer work, nor does the Epson Print Utility (which is supposed to be used for alignment, head cleaning and nozzle test).
It means that, because I'm running a PowerPC machine, I can no longer print my valuable archives of large scale high resolution Southwest photos... which I have optimized for certain ICC Color Profiles in ColorSync.
Epson tells me they're no longer supporting the software for the 1160 and they refuse to help, other than to refer me to use the GIMP Print drivers that shipped with OS X 10.4.11.
No offense to Apple or SourceForge (who make these drivers), but this solution is laughable. First of all, I can't find any ColorSync facility built into the GIMP interface in Tiger; and, secondly, the print image size in the GIMP drivers seems to be seriously bolloxed (as my 13" x 19" test printout printed at 8-1/2" x 11" EXCEPT for a 3/8" band in the middle that was actually 13" x 19").
Yes, I have downloaded, but not yet installed the most recent GIMP drivers ("GutenPrint") from sourceforge, but have to admit I don't have the confidence to apply them...
Please let me know any thoughts and recommendations... Thanks!

BDAqua, thanks for your kind and generous response.
1.) "Since it's a Dual Boot, can you use the OS9 drivers?"
Beats me... I print from Photoshop 7. I can't remember if the program runs under OS 9; nor do I know if running Photoshop under Tiger would let me select an OS 9 printer driver, in lieu of a Tiger driver.
2.) "Does this old OSX driver work?"
It's the same one I had installed under Panther (and the one Epson is still offering), but it doesn't show up at print time.
3.) "Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4... "
Not sure if this is the ticket -- I surmise the installation of Tiger installs the GIMP drivers, in precedence to the Epson (1.2Ba) driver -- or at least somehow the Tiger print routine won't invoke the old Epson Driver (which I never uninstalled).
4.) " ...I wouldn't be surprised that you could use a later Epson Driver and/or habd edit the PPD to the correct dimensions."
Wow. I assume such editing would exceed my skills (and I'm not familiar with the term "habd"). Are there instructions, somewhere?
5.) "If it uses 4 inks perhaps the Epson WorkForce 1100 Wide-format Printer driver would work?"
A creative thought. I've never looked into the structure of PPDs (or drivers), and have been assuming that either a.) the literal printer name would govern invocation of the code, or b.) Epson might have told me if another set of drivers and utilities might work, or c.) if they abandoned updating their 1160 software for Tiger and PowerPC, they well might have thrown the rest of their printers overboard, as well. I'll try to look into this...
Why can't life be simple, the way it used to be... *:=)
After a series of e-mail love letters back and forth between myself and the company, today I asked Customer Relations for the address of the CEO in Japan, so I could ship my boat anchor back to him, personally.
Appreciate your help.

  • Can't get a good print with Tiger - Epson R300

    Hi, I have a year old imac - tiger - photoshop CS3 -
I have a printer Epson R300 that worked Great! with my older mac/older photoshop.
I have tried many things to try to get a decent print.
I scan in paintings using bright colors with lots of details in the color.
All the prints come out not great, when this printer used to give me beautiful prints with older mac.
Am I barking up the wrong tree?
Does the R300 just not cut it with this new spiffy computer?
I wish i never got rid of my other computer. It was slow, but great.
I have done considerable research and tried things and made notes on my prints. All prints are substandard from my point of view.
Any help would be appreciated. I need the step by step help.
I'm not that good at computers.
    thanks!

Odds are very high that the problem is not with your OS (assuming you are on 10.4.11), your Mac or the Epson printer (assuming that you have recently downloaded and re-installed the very latest Epson driver).
Odds are that your color management setup is flawed. Carefully follow the steps at
    Good luck!

  • CS Epson 740 with Tiger

I've read the different options offered for my problem regarding not being able to get a Epson 740 to print in Tiger, and tried the fixes offered. No Luck.
IE. I found the Library/Printers/Epson/740 plug-in, so I know the plug-in is present in Tiger, but the Printer preferences do not allow me to "add" this plug-in. I can name it Epson Stylus 740 and high light it in the name option, but can't add under "more printers" - the option button is grayed out.
I down loaded Pacifist2.0.1, but had no idea what to do with it once it was opened. I downloaded gutenprint 5.0.1.U, but was scared off by the high tech "read me" file. Searched Google, but couldn't come up with any thing that would work.
Does anyone have any more options?
    Thanks Much,

    DDR G4 DP   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Run Printer Setup utility and click the "Add" button.
a "Printer Browser" window should appear with a
    small spinning gear.
Pulled up Printer setup utility>clicked the Add button> window came up called Printer Browser (saw small spinning gear looking for drivers), there was an "add" button and a "More Printers" button. The "add" button was grayed out. Clicked the "More Printers" button. At top of window were 2 pull down menus. 1. Apple Talk / Bluetooth / Windows Printing 2. Local Apple Talk Zone / Apple Talk Network and the following were both grayed out Default Zone and Recent Zones.
In the Printer Browser are listed two printers: Adobe PDF 7 and one I added by typing in, Epson 740 (connection) USB - nothing to do but click "cancel". Remaining window, Print Browser. I click "more printers" and same Printer Browser windows drops down. Dead End.
In Printer/Fax preference, I click on Epson 740 and a small window pops-up reading "Jobs Stopped". I click the "start" icon, and it reads, "No job printing." Basically, I keep going around in circles.
Does X have a preference file which I can delete and start over like in system 9? Have NO idea what the Adobe PDF 7 thing is all about.
    Any other hints?
    Patt
BTW, I took the other hard drive off that offered system 9, though I'd better start from scratch on this non-printing thing. This is a used G4, could there be a stop put on by a previous owner so no printing can take place without a password (or something)?

  • EPSON Printing with Leopard --- Less options than in 10.4?

    Hello -
Small graphic design business -- using an EPSON 1280 for printing invoices/proofs etc...
Since updating to 10.5 we can't print with the proper paper --- selecting from the EPSON printer pulldown - under print settings -- only to "Matte paper - Heavyweight" - the option to print on Plain Paper, 360 inkjet paper, photo quality ink jet paper and others is grayed out --
We need to print on "plain paper" for invoices and can't figure it out -- also will pose problems with printing proofs for clients -- .. We have tried RE-installing EPSON 1280 print software (twice) to no avail -- ALSO --- the EPSON print untility - used to check ink levels, clean printer etc... -- does not work with LEOPARD 10.5 ---
Does anyone have a solution for this ?
    THANK YOU!

That the utility doesn't work is usually an indication that the driver being used is not Epson's proprietary driver. Try deleting and re-adding the printer using Epson's Leopard driver. That may also help with the paper choices. (There is another thread on this here somewhere.)

  • Trying to Connect Wireless Epson Printer with Time Capsule

Greetings. I am a regular Mac user and using Mac for several years now. However, I am a new to network administration. I have a Linksys wireless router that syncs our 5 Macs (one iPad-1 iMac and three MacBook Pros), plus 4 Windows PC's we have in our network. I recently decided to purchase a Time Machine, and further our use of Apple technology in wireless devices. I want to back up all my computer's files to Time Machine and use the Airport Extreme functions of Time Machine while discontinuing the use of my LinkSys router. However, I can't get my Epson WorkForce 600 to wirelessly connect to Time Capsule in order to use the scanner & fax functions. Connecting the printer by USB enables the printer function, but disables all other functions of the printer (fax-scan, etc.).
I tried downloading new Epson drivers and couldn't get some of them to install. This time My iMac wouldn't install the .dmg files. I tried opening the .dmg file and installing. The pop up box requiring my administrator password, kept flashing when I tried to enter my password. Since I couldn't get the .dmg files to install, my plan to update Epson driver's didn't work. Question #1: I am looking for advice how to install these weird disk image files ?
I turned off my Time Capsule, re-connected the LinkSys to the cable modem and all my wireless functions work again, especially my printer. Sadly, no Time Capsule.
I read another discussion suggestion connecting both wireless devices together. I assume since I want to use Time Capsule that I set it up with the modem and connect the other router to it via one of the four ethernet connections. I didn't want to try this until I received further advice. I am hoping I can connect my LinkSys router to Time Capsule and use the printer through the LinkSys connection with all other computers on my network.
Question #2: How can I get my Time Capsule to find the Epson so I can use it again, or should I just use the LinkSys router connected to the printer?
Thank you in advance for help.

This sounds as if you are trying to use instructions that are more than 2 years old at this point, but you are using a new version of AirPort Utility Utility in Lion or Mountain Lion....which would not track or apply to the older instructions.
Can you confirm what operating system that you are using on the Mac that is being used to configure devices?
The new AirPort Express will connect directly to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection, correct?

  • Epson printing with intel chip

the Gimp print 5.0.0 Beta 2 pre-installed on my new iMac (intel chip) does not allow me to access the printer utilities to adjust the printer calibration, check the ink levels or even clean the heads. does anyone know how to address the problem? is there a solution or a new beta version already?

The Epson utilities don't work with Gimp-Print
drivers. Try adding your printer using the More
Printers > Epson USB driver method.
Thanks Greg, but it doesn't work - the Epson USB options I get are for higher-end printers and they do not recognise a 1160. It attempts to print and then stalls and later prints some gobbledeegook. Apparently Epson will not re-write drivers for older printer models - would my only chance be printing from a non intel-chip computer linked on the network or is there another (software related) option?
    Thanks,

how  setup my epson printer with my ipad

See requirements for AirPrint and printers that support AirPrint here (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356):
If your printer supports AirPrint but does not work then:
Your printer might need a firmware update
Your printer must be on the same WiFi network
Your router must support Bonjour (Zero-configuration networking).
    For troubleshooting:
Turn Off iPad, WiFi router (remove from power), and Printer (remove from power).
    Turn on WiFi router
    Wait 30 seconds
    Turn on printer
    Wait 30 seconds
    Turn on iPad
    Try to print.

  • Borderless printing in Tiger with Epson

This has been a nightmare all along. Can anybody tell me how to print borderless with an Epson Stylus Photo RX500 on 4 x 6 inch? In addition to this it seems impossible to print borderless on 5 x 7 inch?
I removed my virtual second borderless printer and now I don't see how to put a new one back.
I am using iPhoto 6 by the way.
In printer utility 'Epson' shows 'gimp print v 5.0 beta 2. What is that about? I've never seen it before. Does this new driver change the way to add a borderless printer?
Many thanks for all your suggestions!
    Eaglepeak

I had a similar problem. Here's the fix Epson gave me. it worked fine, but I don't know if it supports borderless on 5X7. I only use it on 4X6.
To correct the issue you are experiencing, we will perform a complete
removal of the files and reinstall the driver.
    REMOVE FILES
    1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE
    2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder
    3. Double click on the PRINTERS folder
    4. Drag the EPSON folder to the trash can
NOTE If you receive an access denied error message, this indicates that
you do not have root access. You will need to contact Apple for assistance
    on obtaining Root Access.
    1. Insert your 10.4 CD/DVD, double click on the CD/DVD icon on your
    desktop.
    2. Double click SYSTEM > INSTALLATION > PACKAGES > EPSON PRINTER
    DRIVERS.PKG
Follow the prompts for the installation, restart your Mac when complete
Please follow the steps below to install the resident driver for your
    printer in OS 10.4:

DELETE. Once they are all gone Click ADD, then MORE PRINTERS at the bottom
    of the printer browser.
    4. In the window that appears, select EPSON USB from the drop-down menu at
the top, then highlight your printer when it appears under NAME , under
PAGE SETUP select ALL, and then hit ADD.
    5. Quit out of the printer setup utility and try printing from any OS X
    application.
To set up your printer for borderless printing in OS X please follow the
    steps below.
After you have installed your printer driver for OS 10, you will need to do
the following to add extra paper features such as borderless printing
    options:
    1. Go to Printer Setup Utility (found in HD > Applications > Utilities).
Delete any existing references to the Epson printer from the list.

  • Problem with color Epson 2200 on Tiger, Photoshop 7

I'm running Photoshop 7 on an iMac G4, 768 mb RAM, with an Epson 2200 printer. I've been using the same color management system with good results for 3 years. I hooked up an Epson R200 to print CD covers, and it caused my 2200 driver to crash. I reinstalled the driver, and now all my ICC profiles are messed up.
I've reinstalled the driver from the original disk, the updated driver from Epson, and the new ICC profiles from Epson. I'm getting a serious magenta cast on all of these, including ICC profiles I tried downloading from Ilford. I've contacted Epson, but all they told me was how to install the drivers, which I already knew. I responded back to them with a detailed description of the problem, but they never responded. I also took another Mac with Tiger and still have the same problem. I suspect that even though I've got color management turned off, the new Epson drivers are ignoring it and color processing anyway.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Magenta cast sounds like double color management.

  • Color control in printing: Aperture mayhem with Epson printer

With monitors calibrated and colorsync profiles loaded for my Epson 1280 printer, Photoshop prints are as close to screen as possible.
Aperture starts off with something strange: each profile for my Epson appears 3X in the menu. When selecting the profile that matches my printer and paper, the result is more than a color cast. It's more like a colorized image. I can get closer by selecting profiles that don't match my paper type, but always with a cast.
Is there a trick to getting Aperture to be reliable and as good as Photoshop?

(These aren't Epson's instructions, but might be helpful regardless)
For some Epson printers, the drivers shipped with Tiger are more current that the ones on the Epson web site. You wouldn't want to delete the drivers, but - for example - if you move from Firewire to USB, or Airport, the system can get confused.
I've found that deleting the Epson printers in Print Center (and resetting the printing subsystem if necessary or deleting and installing drivers) isn't enough, but that you also have to eradicate everything inside
    /Library/Printers/EPSON/Preferences/
where it remembers printer models, ports and settings.
In addition, ColorSync remembers your profiles for deleted printers in the (hidden) file
    /Library/Preferences/.Globalpreferences.plist
DON'T delete this file, just edit it and get rid of the deleted devices (ColorSyncDevices/Device-prtrxxxx)

  • Printing to my epson R1800 with Lightroom2.4 and to Photoshop CS4

I use to be able to print from my lightroom 2 to my epson R1800, with all my ICC profiles, but after I upgraded to Lightroom2.4 and to Photoshop CS4 I can't seem to print from that app. Anyone have a clue.. I've spoken to tech support for hours on end and still I can't print. I was able to print once directly from photoshop, but after doing everything that was told to me by tech support, now even printing from CS4 is a dead end.

    John,
Thanks for responding, I'm still using Tiger @ OS10.4 and my printer
drivers are up to the latest drivers. I've trashed both LR and Epson

    worth a try

  • Printing with epson RX620

The RX620 all in one is new to me. Am wanting to print 4 different pictures on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet. This means a print 4 1/4 by 5 1/2. The printer only recognizes standard 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 and of course printing only 2 pics. Already talked with epson, they sent me to apple which sent me to iBook G3 and was told that maybe appleworks might help. Limited knowledge so go slow for me. Thankyou, Earl.

N-Up printing must have been added after version 2. It's in iPhoto 5, which shipped with Tiger, but not in version 1.1.x (came with jaguar).
    So...On to using AppleWorks.
Getting photos into AppleWorks can be a simple matter of Drag and Drop, but you may find some problems with resolution and resizing.
Sharon Joiner's User Tip on improving graphics resolution in AppleWorks was the first AppleWorks User Tip Library entry in the discussions, and is still relevant.
I tried a Drag & Drop into a Draw document earlier today with a JPG photo from a 5 Mpix Pentax camera, then used Scale by Percent (in the Arrange menu) to resize it to an appropriate size for 4-Up printing. It appeared to maintain good resolution at a high magnification, but I didn't print, so I don't know what the final product would look like. If it works with your printer, it's a simpler process thn the one in Sharon's tip; if not, hers is a process that will work.
An alternate is to use a third party application (such as Graphic Converter) to convert the photos to PICT format before dragging them into Appleworks. PICT graphics are resizeable in AW.
Others may have additional suggestions. These should get you started. Post back with what works for you; the information amy be useful to the next person with a similar issue.

  • How to print with HP Deskjet 2510 with Imac G5 on Tiger ?

    Hi Folks
I desperately need some helping hand....
Today my old trusty printer died (HP 1510 print/scan/ copy) and I ran to buy another one because I need to finish some tax paperwork.
In a mad hurry, I didn't pay any attention to tech specs and I went home with brand new HP DeskJet 2510 All In One device. But !!! : ((
In my home office I still use Imac G5 with 10.4.11 which is still pretty good comp for office work but I found out that the HP 2510 don't officially support my Imac with Tiger. Only from 10.6 and later.... I know that Imac G5 can't run nothing above 10.5.
So, is there any way to "force" HP 2510 to somehow recognize my Imac G5? In "about my mac" on USB port, the HP 2510 is visible ....
    Many thanks in advance.
    Cheers,

So, is there any way to "force" HP 2510 to somehow recognize my Imac G5?
You may be able to get it to print with something like this:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
although i do not see taht modle on the "Supported Printers" page. You might look again.
BUT that workabout does not support scanning, only printing.
I think you need to return the printer and look to either Canon or Brother. Brother especially has been better about suporting older Mac OS versions but you'll still need to get a model number and search the maker's site BEFORE buying to see if they show older drivers for download.
