Epson Scanner requires "G3 or later"

We are considering the purchase of an Epson scanner that lists "G3 or later with built-in USB" as part of the Mac compatibility requirements. It has 2 built-in USB ports, but I'm embarrassed to say, I have no idea what G3 means in this context... The processor (it's an iMac 5) is an Intel Core Duo 2. We are a not-for-profit and received the iMac as a donation, never used still in box, so we can upgrade it if necessary, but what is G3? Is that a processor? Help...

LibertyAmy,
Welcome to Apple Support Discussions.
G3 is referring to an earlier model of iMac using what was called a G3 micro processor. In short, it's a machine that was made prior to your Intel Core 2 Duo. What you need to do to find out if the scanner is compatible is to:
1. Check what version of OS X is on your iMac. This is easily done by clicking on the  in the upper left of your screen and click About this Mac. It will tell you exactly what version of OS X is installed.
2. Go to Epson's web site and then search for the model scanner and see if it supports the version of OS X you have installed on your iMac.
NOTE: If Epson doesn't directly support it you can purchase VueScan. Simply click on the link and it will take you to the correct location. This tool is designed to work with most scanners and tends to get very good reviews.

Roger

  • "EPSON Scanner" file installed with OS X - Why?

In /Library/Image Capture/Devices is an item named "EPSON Scanner"; its icon looks like a puzzle piece, with a camera on it. Get Info says it's an "Application (Universal)"; it's 6.3 MB in size. I've never owned an Epson scanner; this apparently came with OS X (10.4)? Do I need it for anything if I don't have an Epson scanner?

Hello Graham Rogers! I've enjoyed reading your online
Mac essays. Sorry to hear about the loss of your
    PowerBook.
Oh, gosh. Blush, blush. Thanks. Standby for some more news on the PowerBook theft.
I'm guessing that this is something that someone just
tossed in to OS X on the assumption that a lot of
people have Epson scanners. Like all those printer
drivers that I don't need and didn't install.
I am in two minds about these. Clearly, most of them we will not need, but there is no telling when we might need one. A simple case in point is when, in my office, the venerable HP DeskJet 920C packed up (for which I had not needed an extra driver) and a replacement Epson was wheeled in. Unlike my Windoze using colleagues, I just switched in an instant, no CDROM required.
So I tend to leave this stuff alone.
I prefer to keep my System installation trimmed down
Me too, and that is why I reinstall and choose not to have all the different language packs. That saves a fair amount of space.
These are, after all, personal computers.

  • EPSON Scanner driver 3.03 (June 2007 release) for 4870

This is just a quick FYI for anyone unfortunate enough to have to reinstall there epson scanner drivers. Recently my epson 4870 scanner stopped working with my computer, tried all the usual stuff, permissions, restarting, unplugging other stuff etc. to no avail. So I phoned epson support.
They asked me to delete several epson related files in various folders - some files that I was asked to delete could not be found in the folders they asked me to look in. I pointed out that the driver software had an uninstall option, they said this wouldn't remove all the files.
We emptied the trash, installed the new 3.03 software and restarted, plugging things back in, repairing permissions etc. It still didn't work, I pointed out that 'epson scanner monitor' was no longer in the applications folder - I was told this wasn't required.
Curiously, in the apple system profiler under firewire the scanner seems to be shown as the letter 'G' manufacturer as just 'E' which I thought was strange. If I plug in using a USB cable it will display correctly under the USB list.
To cut a long story short, we spent over an hour going over and over this process, changing firewire cables, trying different ports, redownloading software and in the end I was told to contact apple as it had to be a problem with my machine (and also as it wasn't a PC he couldn't help any further).
I managed to dig out the original installer disk (epson scan, vers 2.0) that came with the machine several years ago, deleted previous files and reinstalled from that. It worked straight away, although I'm anticipating a few problems as this is so out of date.
I wondered if anyone has had similar problems and had managed to find a better solution.

I had a similar experience with the immediately previous version of EpsonScan, so I downloaded and installed 3.0.3 and things got worse. I then unplugged the scanner, uninstalled and reinstalled 3.0.3, thus far it is working. I hope it is not as buggy as 3.0.2

  • Why can't Photoshop 7.0 see my Epson scanner ?

    Hi everyone!
This is probably more a Photoshop/Epson compatability problem but I thot I'd post it here anyway, as I'm sure I'm not alone in my struggle..
Just upgraded to Photoshop 7.0, only to find that it can't see my scanner anymore (an Epson Perfection 1240U) when I try to access it via File>Import>TWAIN as I prefer to do. It worked fine in Photoshop 6.0 I have to point out.
I went to epson.com and downloaded the recommended driver updates, and now I can see the scanner listed under Import but still no dice when I try to start the device - my Mac tells me there is no scanner installed.
Anyone know enough to shed some light on this situation?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi again Joe!
Well thanks, I tried your advice but to no avail.
I installed at: Apps>Adobe PS7>Plug-Ins>Import/Export>TWAIN>Contents>Mac OS (here I could also choose Mac OS Classic but didn't)>Epson Scanner
After getting a "Requires restart" message, the "Epson Screen Callibration" box opened up and wether I completed it or not, my Mac froze and I had to force-quit before re-starting manually. On restart, when clicking on Twain Installer to try again, I got a "Mac OS9 starting" warning!! Checking the Epson Scanner file I found it empty, even though I tried the process (& variations on the process) several times - always the same.
So really, I dunno what might work. Maybe removing all Twain files from everywhere and reinstalling but I dont think I dare! I can still scan from PS6 so that's what I'm doing..
Maybe I'll try Epson as you suggest, though I've heard they aren't so helpful.
    Thanks for your time Joe!

  • Using Epson scanner 2450 with CS3

    Hello,
Has anyone been able to get their Epson scanner to open in Photo Shop CS3?
I can open the scanner only from the Epson Scan utility. And that only after a struggle, and help from this community.
CS3 on my desktop (Dual G4 MDD) will allow me to open the scanner directly in the File/Import menu of Photoshop with Twain.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

    Wallah
A bit more research shows that CS3 runs in 32 bit mode.  The problem I had was with CS5.
You could try asking in the Adobe Photoshop Community or in fredmiranda where there are many Photoshop gurus. (both require userids which are free).

  • Epson scanner compatibility

For years, I've used an Epson Perfection 2400 Photo flatbed scanner with its included excellent EpsonScan software. I can scan photos, negatives, slides and multi-page documents, newspaper articles and more with ease, saving the images as JPEGs, TIFFs or even multi-page PDFs.
Recently, my aging MacBook Pro (2,2 running MacOS 10.6.8) died. I had to quickly find a replacement. I bought a refurbished late-2012 iMac (running MacOS 10.8). It was, of course, inevitable that I would find some things "broken" when I fired up the iMac and started integrating it into my workflow. The Epson scanner turned out to be one of the "broken" items. Epson Scan software will not launch at all now.
Epson tries to funnel MacOS 10.8 users over to Apple's ImageCapture for scanning, but ImageCapture is like going back to the early 1990s when it comes to a scanning workflow. A significant portion of my scanning is multi-page official documents that I scan into PDFs so they can be shared. Epson Scan made that easy.
Am I "fetched up, hard aground" on the shoals of Mountain Lion? It doesn't look like this (scanning) boat is going anywhere. What are my options?

  • Can't get Epson scanner to work

I have an Epson Perfection 3170 scanner that I am trying to get to work under Arch.  I installed the sane and xsane packages and xsane reports "no devices available".  I tried downloading the driver for the Perfection 3170 from the Epson web site.  They have both iscan-2.10.0-1.c2.i386.rpm and iscan_2.10.0-1.tar.gz available.  I first tried compiling the code from the tar.gz package.  The ./configure worked OK but the make quickly failed, complaining about some errors in a C function call.  I next tried the .rpm file.  I unpacked it using rpmextract.sh into a temporary directory and then copied the files to the appropriate system directories.  This installed some new files such as /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf, /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa.so.1, etc.  I added epkowa to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and commented out epson and epson2.  Still no luck.

    I tried "# gpasswd -a myusername scanner"
I looked in /lib/udev/rules.d/49-sane.rules.  It already contained the lines:

    ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0116", MODE="0664", GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"
I tried adding this line to /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf
    usb 0x04b8 0x0116
I tried removing all lines from /etc/sane.d/dll.conf except epkowa.  Also tried just epson and epson2.
So far, nothing works.  scanimage -L always returns "No scanners were identified."
    Any suggestions?

For that model, Epson has this information:
    ICA Scanner Driver
    07/17/12
Description: The latest Mac OS X ICA scanner driver for your Epson product is available only via Apple's Software Update. Here's how to get it:
    1. Connect the all-in-one or scanner to your Mac and power it on.
    2. Select the  menu, then Software Update.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the available updates.

I upgraded to 10.8.4 and now I can' use my Epson scanner  I get a message saying, "ou can't open the application Epson Scan apps because Power PC applications are no longer supported." I also can't synch my old Palm Pilot for the same reason.
    How can I fix this?

We need to sort out some facts here first:
    •  You cannot be running Mt. Lion on your iMac G5.  What Mac is it?  What is the Model Identifier listed in About This Mac; More Info; Hardware Overview
    •  What is the model of your Epson Scanner?
    •  Have you attempted to scan using Image Capture, located in your Applications folder?
    •  Your Palm Pilot software will only run in Snow Leopard; so depending upon which Mac you have, you will either have to:
    1)  partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it to "dual-boot" when you want to access you Palm software, or
    2)  install Snow Leopard Server (now available from Apple for $20 telephone orders USA & Canda only) into Parallels 8 to run your Palm software in Mt. Lion:

  • I have upgraded to Mountain Lion and have found that some of my software no longer works, notably Image Browser and also the Epson Scanner Perfection 3490 software. Is there a 'patch' or way to allow me to use these programmes especially the scanner.

Apple discontinued support for PowerPC apps with Lion, I think, so you're out of luck there. No patch coming, unfortunately. Best to upgrade whatever old applications you have or, since it seems like you're using some relatively old software, scout around for replacements that give you the functionality you need.
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Print & Scan and select your scanner from the list--if it's not there you'll need to add it (start with the little plus icon). Once you have it in the list you can click on the Open Scanner button and a pretty barebones scanner driver will load for you. But Image Capture (as mentioned previously), found in your Applications folder, will probably do the job as adequately, or better, than your old scanner software.

  • Compatibility of epson scanner w/ intel imac

I have 2 new intel imacs, as well as a G4 imac. I'm trying to connect my new Epson scanner (Perfection 4990 Photo). When installing the software, it is looking for a classic environment. The online drivers from Epson's website seem to be for v10.4.4, and I'm running 10.4.10. Does anyone know whether this Epson scanner is just plain incompatible with the intel steel imacs? I have tried to contact Epson in various ways, all with no success. I'm a graphic designer and have previously had success w/ Epson scanners, but I'm tearing my hair out and ready to pack it up and return it for another brand. Their lack of support is outrageous. Does anyone share this experience or have any advice??? I'd appreciate it.

What do you mean that it is looking for the classic environment?
Are you able to open the .dmg successfully?
BTW, this is the discussion area for the much older iMac G3 CRT. You should post future questions in the Intel iMac discussion area.

  • Microsoft problem in image aquisition from Epson scanner

I cannot get my Epson Perfection 3200 Photo to scan even using its own Epson Scan program. I always used Photoshop 7 to scan and import the images easily. Then we moved to a new house, and when I went to reconnect everything, Microsoft doesn't recognize the Epson scanner no matter what I do. Epson technicians were not able to help. I believe that it's a Microsoft acquisition problem. It says "Could not open the TWAIN source". Should I just remove everything that has to do with Epson, even the plug-in in Photoshop, then recalibrate my monitor and reload Epson after that? --thank you, L Williamson

Re-installing is the first step, make sure after the un-install that you remove any vestiges of the install left over. Disconnect the scanner while doing this. After you are finished, shut off the computer, re-connect and start the scanner, start the computer again and let Windows find it and then install the latest software for the scanner.
