Epub; it's listed but not viable

It's nice Adobe has listed epub as a digital editions export option.
It is terribly unfortunate that a company proud of publishing, communications and elearning can't/doesn't provide informatin on how to make this format viable. I love InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator...etc.,There are lots of exciting interactive features built into InDesign - but if features have to be recreated or even reinvented in another program - no matter what that program is - it's pretty frustrating to a production environment.
It is not helpful to offer an export option that is purely a "marketing promotional term".Yes, there is a lot of information on the web regarding the specifications of ePub, Daisy (DTBook), XML, XHTML, NIMAS, etc. But, how, oh how, could we possible use EXISTING INDESIGN documents.?
When a user wants to know how to export to epub - well, look in the Help. But for epub, InDesign nor ePub Help Viewers don't explain how the features are implemented or what a working model or best practices look like. EPUBBestPractices-1_0_3.epub discusses some basic epub creation features with CS3 and seems to deadend.
Come on InDesign/Adobe; help us be able to use your product for electronic, epub, IDPF, XHTML compliant documents. Yes, we can do the prep and creation work.
Can you successfully export it?

I share your frustration on this subject. But I think it is also because at the present the EPUB format is not a sharp defined standard. I have been looking around several EPUBs not made by InDesign and the internal structure is similar but very different.
If you decompress an EPUB you will see is full of files, folders, etc. it is a bit complex to figure out, so I guess InDesign just added this feature even though is far from perfect, may be they think PDF/A  is a more suitable standard for digital books rather than this hard-to-understand EPUB structure. Some press websites recommend some best practises for EPUB files, some other websites recommend the opposite.
My feeling is that at this point EPUB technology is a little bit chaotic, and I don't hope Adobe to be very proactive in solving this in the near future.
Trying to show people they may open and process the already made EPUB for fixing styles with CSS, etc.... is sooo discouraging for most of designers, but some editors for some reason are demmanding to translate their INDD editions into EPUB instead of PDF/A
Even my Stanza gives an error when trying to open an InDesign-made EPUB, but this same EPUB passes epub check tools... it is kind of mad...

  • HT204370 A movie shows in my purchased list but not in the Movies list...

    A movie shows in my purchased list but not in the Movies list...

    The purchase history on your iTunes account will only show purchases from the iTunes stores (iTunes, app store, ibookstore, Mac app store), not from Apple online or bricks-and-mortar stores.
    Does anything show on your credit card ? If the email is genuine then it's possible that your and their email addresses are similar and that they gave the wrong id (or the store typed it incorrectly), it doesn't necessarily mean that anybody has access to your account.
    For the contact, you will initially just receive an acknowledgement email, the proper reply may take 24 (possibly 48) hours.

  • My Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4DC is on the supported lens list but not in the Profile Downloader.

    My Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4DC is on the supported lens list but not in the Profile Downloader.
    How can I download the profile?
    Thanks very much.

    The “Lens Profile Downloader” is not where you get lenses “on the list”, rather it is where you get lenses that third-parties have provided, so usually for lenses not on the list.
    I see three Sigma 17-70 f/2.8 DC variations for 5 different camera manufacturers so I’d expect you should see the lens listed if you select a raw photo.  There is no profile for JPGs.
    Here are the profiles for Canon:
    Canon (SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM C013) - RAW.lcp
    Canon (Sigma_17-70mm_F2.8-4.5_DC_MACRO_HSM ) - RAW.lcp
    Canon (Sigma_17-70mm_F2.8-4_DC_MACRO_OS_HSM ) - RAW.lcp
    What is your actual situation, are you looking at a JPG that won’t have a lens profile, or is the lens profile not in the list for your camera or is it just not being found automatically when you set Lens Profile Setup to Auto.

I went exactly through the steps in https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Custom_Toolbar_Button I also downloaded the stumble button extension and had the same issue. I've tried this on a windows xp, and vista machine, no luck.

  • Those values which are there in the IN list but  not in the table.

    Hi All,
    We have a table global_title_isbn having 18 columns with primary key on title_isbn. This table contains approx. 10 million rows.
    Normally what we used to get was 10-15 comma seperated list of ISBNs for some business process , for them we have to check into the table to figure out what all ISBNs are not there in the table.
    But now a days we are getting a list of more than 100 ISBNs and there are times when only less than 40 ISBNs exist in the table. So figuring out what all ISBN are not there in the given list is very tiresome job.
    Is there any way using SQL we get list of only those ISBN which are not there in the table from the list,
    eg
    select * from global_title_isbn where title_isbn in ( a comma seperated list);
    will give me those ISBNs which are there in the global_title_isbn and in the given list..
    Desired O/P
    a list of ISBN which are there in the given list but do not exist in the table.
    PS:-- I have only read access . I cannot create any table/view etc and PLSQL stored procedure.....
    Regards
    Vineet

    I see no problem with my solution.
    See examples below:
    create table global_title_isbn (title_isbn varchar2(10));
    insert into global_title_isbn values ('8888888');
    commit;
    -- your_string is '9999999','8888888','17262','19283263','328732'
    select rtrim(ltrim(extractvalue(list_isbn.column_value,'e'), ''''), '''') as title_isbn
      from table(xmlsequence
                  (extract
                    (xmltype('<coll><e>' ||replace(:your_string, ',', '</e><e>') ||'</e></coll>')
                  , '/coll/*') )
                ) list_isbn
    where not exists (select 1
                         from global_title_isbn gt
                        where gt.title_isbn = rtrim(ltrim(extractvalue(list_isbn.column_value,'e'), ''''), ''''));
    output:
    9999999
    17262
    19283263

  • Font showing in photoshop font list but not showing in the flash font list

    Hi,
    I have some issues with fonts. I am using a Mac OS X and i have installed the fonts into font book.
    The installed fonts are showing up in my Photoshop CS3 font list but are missing from my Flash CS3 and CS4 font lists.
    I am using .otf fonts.
    Any help will be really appreciated .
    Thanks,

    Jude,
    I don't know what the problem may be, sorry.
    Since the fonts are not from Adobe, you'll have to either contact the foundry from which you've licensed them or post this issue on the Flash forum at http://forums.adobe.com/community/flash/flash_general

  • Buddy in app buddy list but not in menubar buddy list

    For some reason, one of my Buddies does not show up in the Buddy List available from the menubar. That buddy (and all buddies) are listed in the Buddy List shown within the iChat application. I tried deleting the preferences plist files as referenced in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8269981 but it did not change the behavior I am seeing. Any suggestions?
    This screenshot shows "Anthony Smith" listed in the app but not in the menubar list: http://www.eliker.net/missing_buddy.jpg

    I found the solution. That person had their AIM account entered twice into their address card on my computer. The capitalization was different between the two entries as well. I removed the buddy, deleted the extra AIM account entry from their address card, then added them back as a buddy as all is well!

  • Want to import bookmarks from IE to Firefox to update my list. Import function under File is not avaiable as it is listed but not active.

    In the past I have imported my favorites from IE to Firefox bookmarks. Now I want to redo it to update the ones I have in IE but not in Firefox. When I click on File the drop down menu has Import listed but it is not highlighted or you might say its shadowed out and does nothing when I click on it. I guess my question is how can I make the import option active so I can use the import wizard?

  • Safari: sync Reading List but not Bookmarks

    Is there a way to use iCloud to sync the Reading List in Safari but not the Bookmarks? I have a work computer and a home computer that I require completely different bookmarks on but would like to keep synced in all other areas.
    Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Unfortunately, you cannot differentiate between those two features, it is both or nothing, but you could use another app like Pocket (http://getpocket.com) which is available for iOS, Mac and accesible via the browser for saving articles and sync them between devices. This shoul help you to keep the bookmarks separated and using another app for reading list.

  • Allow user to select data, see the tables list but not view the table/view/stored procs definition

    Hi,
    May I know how to achieve the above ? Please enlighten me.
    TIA !

    So you want users to be able to see the name of the table, but not the definition? I am afraid that this is not possible. You can give users access to a table and hide the definition, but the name is considered part of the definition.
    Olaf mentioned VIEW DEFINITION. What he did not say is that when you have SELECT permission (or EXECUTE permission on a stored procedure), the permission VIEW DEFINITION is implied by the stronger permission. For this reason you need to explicitly DENY this
    permission as shown in the script below.
    In the script I create a user without a login and then impersonate a user. This is an excellent way to test permissions.
    [sql]
    CREATE TABLE tabbe (a int NOT NULL)
    go
    CREATE USER usse WITHOUT LOGIN
    go
    GRANT SELECT ON tabbe TO usse
    DENY VIEW DEFINITION ON tabbe TO usse
    go
    EXECUTE AS USER = 'usse'
    go
    SELECT * FROM tabbe
    go
    SELECT name FROM sys.objects WHERE type = 'U'
    EXEC sp_help tabbe
    go
    REVERT
    go
    DROP USER usse
    DROP TABLE tabbe
    {/sql]
    Note: rather than denying VIEW DEFINITION on an individual object you can leave out "ON tabbe" to deny the permission across the database.

  • Dtd-is-prohibited-error-when-accessing-sharepoint-2013-office365-list-but-not

    I need to update some items in a list and previously done it through a console app and using the sharepoint.client.dll but for some reason it no longer works.
    When I call the clientContext.ExecuteQuery() it throws this error:-
    "For security reasons DTD is prohibited in this XML document. To enable DTD processing set the DtdProcessing property on XmlReaderSettings to Parse and pass the settings into XmlReader.Create method."
    I have googled this and seen others have had similar problems but changing DNS has not resolved this which did in their case.
    I can probably create a sharepoint-hosted app to do it but just takes longer for such a simple update.
    I have checked fiddler and can see it is requesting the FPUrl.xml and returning a 302 response.
    GET http://msoid.thesportsoffice.com/FPUrl.xml HTTP/1.1

    Any ideas why this is starting to happen?
    Karl Diggle

    Hi D00gle,
    DTD means document type declaration. Using DTD entity expansion, it is easy to make a very small XML data stream fully expand into a very large document.
    It will run parser without source limit, so the system will tell you the data has a security issue.
    To fix the issue, you can set like below in your code:
    XmlReaderSettings settings = new XmlReaderSettings();
    settings.ProhibitDtd = false;
    Here is a thread about this issue for your reference:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13854068/dtd-prohibited-in-xml-document-exception

  • "DTD is prohibited" error when accessing sharepoint 2013/office365 list (but not openly aware of using XML)

    I've been getting a list of folders and files from Sharepoint (on Office 365) by using the following C# code...
    var folders = ListFolders(libraryName, clientContext, web);
    public List<Folder> ListFolders(string libraryName, ClientContext clientContext, Web web)
    var list = GetDocumentLibrary(libraryName, clientContext, web);
        var folders = list.RootFolder.Folders;
        clientContext.Load(folders);
       clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
        return folders.ToList();
    public List GetDocumentLibrary(string libraryName, ClientContext clientContext, Web web)
    var query = clientContext.LoadQuery(web.Lists.Where(p => p.Title == libraryName));
       clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    return query.FirstOrDefault();
    It was working fine until I rebooted my computer (it installed a Windows Update), I strongly suspect, based on some testing I've done, it is caused by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2964358
    When the *clientContext.ExecuteQuery()* statement is reached in *GetDocumentLibrary()*, the
    following exception is thrown.
    *An unhandled exception of type 'System.Xml.XmlException' occurred in System.Xml.dll
    Additional information: For security reasons DTD is prohibited in this XML document. To enable DTD processing set the DtdProcessing property on XmlReaderSettings to Parse and pass the settings into XmlReader.Create method.*
    I'm wondering how I can work around this, as I'm not consciously using System.XML, it's a background function or process when the ExecuteQuery runs.
    Can I pass some additional XMLReader info to this or clientContext (I'm assuming not), so I'm not sure how to execute this query to prevent the DTD error. I have also tried accessing the list in a different manner, by using this code... (from Microsoft's MSDN
    pages)
    List list = clientContext.Web.Lists.GetByTitle(libraryName);CamlQuery camlQuery = new CamlQuery();            camlQuery.ViewXml = "<View/>";ListItemCollection listItems = list.GetItems(camlQuery);clientContext.Load(list); clientContext.Load(listItems);clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    This works on a computer without the KB above, however on my PC it doesn't (I get the same exception as my other code) , obviously uninstalling the KB will make things work in the short term, but its no good in the longer term. Any advice on how to avoid
    this error would be greatly appreciated.  I can only assume there will be a "preferred" way from Microsoft for accessing lists now this KB is implemented, but I'm clueless as to what it is.
    Thanks
    Dougie

    I've found that the issue is related to certain ISP's providing a "search assistance" page when a request returns an error due to no DNS entry matching that URL.  For example, if you use Verizon in the USA, and go to www.somenonexistanturl.com, it will
    "helpfully" respond to you with a search results page of possible options to match the URL you requested.
    Because this is not the expected XML that the SP Client Context library was looking for (i.e., it does not have the DTD that it validates), the exception is thrown.  The offending request that I have seen in my case is to the following URL: http://msoid.[my
    office 365 acct name].onmicrosoft.com/FPUrl.xml
    A simple resolution is to change your network connection adapter settings to use a DNS server IP other than the one auto-retrieved from your ISP, such as Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). It's not a long term fix, since you'd breaking the ability to resolve
    internal resources from a private or corporate network (unless the private network is also setup with Google's IP for the DNS gateway).
    While you may have not changed any of your code, I would bet that you changed how/where you access the internet from when it was working to when it stopped working.
    What I am not entirely sure of is why did this start happening all of a sudden - was it a change from MSFT that broke the URL, or did the ISP(s) decide to become extra helpful with bad URLs?

  • Where is my purchased music in iTunes?...they are listed but not showing in the list

    I went into iTunes to check out the new "Purchased" area and found a really helpful list of artists on the left hand side.  Each one has a number next to it which I believe is the number of songs for each artist.  When I click on many of the artists I get a list of songs and it indicates whether they are already downloaded to that computer or not.  I can then click on the ones I want on that machine and they will download from the Cloud.
    Sounds great but where the heck are all the other tunes that are shown on the list on the left but they don't show up on the right when I click that artist?  There was one band in particular that I wanted to download because I think the only place I have it still downloaded is on an old machine that is no longer online (its packaged up in my basement).  That's one of the ones that has nothing in the right hand list... no songs listed - even though the list of artists shows it has having 24 songs.
    Can anyone tell me what is stopping those ones from showing up?  Are they too old for the system?  If I bought them on iTunes previously they should still exist...am I missing anything?
    Thanks,
    Sam

    Only songs (or Apps, books, etc) that are still currently available in the iTunes store for sale can be re-downloaded.
