EPUB, .PDF, or .Folio for iPad Book?

I am attempting to convert a bilingual childrens book into an iPad Viewable app but I find much of this confusing.
There is English and Hmong text on each page... Is there a way I could create the digital book so the user could select which language would be read to them as they turn the pages? Or would I only be able to have it read in one or the other? I could have buttons on each page that play each language though right? With what types of publications would I be able to accomplish which task? Any other options?
Also, must I create a .folio in order to have the document viewable horizontally and vertically as the user turns the ipad, (as In I create two versions of each page) Or can I do that with other exported file types?
Finally, If you have a link to the most helpful resource on any of this I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank You for your time,
Ryan

You should ask questions relative to creating folio files to the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Forum:
http://forums.adobe.com/community/dps
There are severe limitations to using PDF files on iPads because the PDF readers are very immature. Most of the applications don't support interactivity. Here are two postings I did on PDF readers:
For Interactive PDF, Not All Readers Are Equal
A Much Improved Adobe Reader for Tablets Appears
EPUB files currently only support Latin languages. When I did an EPUB file that used Sanskrit, I had to rasterize the language (it was only short sections). InDesign CS5.5 or CS6 would let you choose the image resolution up to 300 ppi. Of course, you could then not interact with the text because it would be a picture.

  • Is zagg folio for iPad 2 compatible with iPad 3?

    I found this deal online: http://www.zagg.com/j/promo/zfolio_freeprods/freebuds.php?gclid=CO-e5fC67K8CFQgD QAodrlh31w
In this deal, If I purchase an iPad 2 zagg keyboard case ($99) I get a free pair of zagg smart buds ($50). My current skullcrushers are nearly broken, as skullcandy is all for the design, not quality. I am very interested in receiving these in ear headphones. But I have an iPad 3, and I can't use this exact same deal if I buy an iPad 3 zagg folio. I have tried. After looking at the specs of each keyboard, I found that each Folio (iPad 3 and iPad 2) have the exact same specs:
    iPad 3 folio specs:
    Weight: 19 ounces (539 grams)
Keyboard only: 11.5 ounces (326 grams)
Folio only: 7.5 ounces (213 grams)
    Length: 9.75 inches (247 mm)
    Width: 7.625 inches (193 mm)
    Depth: .9 inches (23 mm)
    iPad 2 folio specs:
    Weight: 19 ounces (539 grams)
Keyboard only: 11.5 ounces (326 grams)
Folio only: 7.5 ounces (213 grams)
    Length: 9.75 inches (247 mm)
    Width: 7.625 inches (193 mm)
    Depth: .9 inches (23 mm)
I know for a fact that the iPad 3 is .6mm thicker then its prediccessor, and I compared my iPad 3 to my fathers iPad 2, and saw little tiny difference. It was litteraly the difference of the length of how much the glass pops out of an idevice if you look at it horizontaly.
The folios also have this in the specs section:
    iPad 3 Folio:
    COMPATABILITY
Works with Apple iPad 3 (3rd gen)
    iPad 2 Folio:
    COMPATABILITY
    Works with Apple iPad 2
I know that the bluetooth technoledgy is the same on each device, both software and hardware versions.
I also know that online on stores such as Walmart, Bestbuy,  Ebay, and Amazon all sell the Zagg Folio but they are marked as *For iPad 2 and iPad 3.
After doing a mock purchase, they do not ask you if you have an iPad 3 or 2. Meaning that they are in fact the same size?
Remember that I want to buy an iPad 2 folio for my iPad 3 because of the free $50 zagg buds that come with them at:
    http://www.zagg.com/j/promo/zfolio_freeprods/freebuds.php?gclid=CO-e5fC67K8CFQgD QAodrlh31w

Yes, they're quite good. When I got the ZaggFolio for my iPad 3, it said ZaggFolio 2 on the box. Called them in a panic. They were very nice and explained that, as they never made a version for the original iPad, the ZaggFolio for the iPad 3 is the second version. Absurd but they were still very nice about explaining it and I didn't have to wait long on the phone, either.

  • Is there a PDF print driver for ipad

I want to be able to print individual pages from an excel file so i can email them. So i am looking for a print driver or print program to make this happen
Some of the apps i have a re polaris office, expert PDF, Adobe.

First, do you have Apple's own “Numbers”? It's not only able to export / mail PDF files from inside the app (unfortunately, there's no “Send to” inside – this has always been a problem), but also do it textually – as opposed to just making a screenshot of the current screen and making a PDF of it by accessing the screenshot in the Camera Roll in a PNG->PDF-conversion capable PDF reader.
If you still want to go the second way, I've tested most of the PDF / generic docs readers I have.
The ones supporting image → PDF conversion are as follows:
PDF Reader Pro (Yuyao; $6; http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdf-reader-pro/id300298606?mt=8 ) (can convert single images only!)
PDF Reader (Kdan Mobile Software; http://www.kdanmobile.com/en/pdf-reader/ ; http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdf-reader-ipad-edition/id367816156?mt=8 ; $5) (several in one! Just follow the built-in help at “i” icon at the bottom left > select PDF Scanner)
PDF Reader Pro (iTech; http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pdf-reader-pro-edition-for/id364502063?mt=8 ; $10) (multiple; tap the “Scan” icon at the bottom center, tap the film cartridge icon in the bottom left; tap all images you want to import; when you're finished, tap “Make PDF” (second icon on the bottom left)

  • Distributing folios for ipad

    Hi
I'm currently setting out to convert a multimedia file I developed in Flash to something that can be viewed on ipad......an exercise that seems to be more painful than I was expecting.
It involves videos and slides that come together to create a training aid for a business that wants to make it available to a couple of hundred employees to use on their ipads.
The original file (developed for use on Windows machines for full training sessions) is well over 2gb, and the ipad version would be used in areas with no broadband access, so streaming options are not an option.
If ipad played video in PDFs, that would have been an ideal solution.
I've mucked around a bit with epub variations, but haven't had a great deal of luck.
To further complicate things, I'm PC based.
This morning I did a test with creating a folio in Indesign, which seemed to give a great result. However, I'm uncertain about a couple of issues. Ideally, I'd like to be able to distribute it by just giving the company a usb stick with file on it that their employees can add to their ipads through their itunes installations. Is this possible?.......or am I stuck wih them having to download it through Creative Cloud or the app store?
Does anyone have a better idea of how I can approach this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've a strong feeling this is just the first of many such jobs I'll have to take on in the future as things move more from television advertising to content provision. I'd really like to get this first one right.

    Moved to DPS forum.
I'm afraid that without an enterprise level account (and access to a Mac) you are not going to be able to do this with DPS. There are ways to distribute folios with the Adobe Content Viewer but that is not a great solution for more than a very limited audience.

  • Creating an enhanced ebook in epub format with video for iPad, need guidance

Has any one done this before? I just found this and it is the perfect solution for what I am trying to accomplish. Here is a screen shot of a and enhanced ebook i dowloaded from the apple book store.
http://oi51.tinypic.com/2lub9g2.jpg Just wondering what the best way to go about laying this out, seems like ibooks formats all the epubs to look the same. Thanks

If you want to make a publication from InDesign to iPad, you can also use Adobe Digital Publishing Suite. With it you can add videos to InDesign layout. Videos has to be H.264 encoded, but you can do that with Adobe Media Encoder which is free utility, comes with indesign CS5... and after finishing layout, you can bundle the whole thing to iPad App...(this is strongly simplified description of the process... but anyway, it´s possible)

  • IBA: Is it possible to make an iTunes book link to open in Safari instead of iBooks on iPhone for iPad books?

This message comes up on iPhone: “Item not available - This book is only viewable on an iPad or a Mac with iBooks”. It would be good to be able to show info about an iPad/Mac book on iPhones.

To ask Apple to add this feature you need to post at

  • HT4636 Can you open a PDF in Keynote for iPad?

I am a designer using InDesign.  I'd like to export my presentation to PDF and then open on my iPad using Keynote. Doable?

Are you in Safari and you want to copy them to iBooks, or you in a different app ? Assuming that you are using Safari, then if I open a PDF on my first gen iPad in Safari and tap on it, I then get a pop-up bar at the top of it with the 'Open In' options.

  • Make a folio created for iPad viewable on non-tablets

    1) I'm creating a folio that is meant to be viewed on the iPad using InDesign, but I also want it to be viewable in a web browser (I'm thinking about just embedding a SWF file?). It's my first one so I'm not sure exactly what I will need to do at the end. I've found tutorials that take me from start to finish for the iPad version, but I don't want to do a bunch of work and then lose functionality for the web version. I would also be interested to know what functionality I would lose if I tried to convert it to HTML5.
    2) Second question would be how I can distribute the folio if I don't need it to go through the App Store. I will be sharing it with a known (small) group of users. The research I've done leads me to believe that I would have to have an enterprise license to hand out individual instances of the app. Is this correct? I'm on adobe CC.

    1) There is no way to do this as a Single Edition user. You can create a folio for iPad, but that's it.
    2) If it's just one or two people you can share the folio with them and they can use the Adobe Content Viewer and an Adobe ID to log in and view it.

  • Text for ipad, windows and android

    Hi
I'll publish a folio for ipad , windows and android.
If I have understood correctly, Is the best way to create an iPad version first and use the same folio to the other platforms.
I have made a folio of 1024x768 and has 16pt for body text. PDF format.
The problem is that the text is ugly in Android and Windows versions.
What should I do to get the best deal on the windows and android versions?

  • Folio Publishing - iPad 2 resolution vs. iPad 3 resolution

    Hi,
I have one question about the folio resolution. If I want to publish a folio for iPad 2 & 3, what kind of resolution should I take? There are a few options:
-Take the resolution of iPad 3 and take it for iPad 3 & 2
-Make two folios for each iPad-resolution
(-Take the resolution of the iPad 2 for iPad 2 &3 [DOESN´T WORK FOR iPad 3])
What I now want to know is, what changes in the document if I choose option one and take the iPad 3 resolution for iPad 3 & 2?
Would this change the quality and should I take two folios?
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, you´re right. I mistook it. If you choose the iPad 3 resolution for iPad 2 it it will not work, but if you choose to take the resolution from iPad 2 for iPad 3 it will work. But whats up with the quality? will it make a difference?

  • EPub vs. PDF for tech books

I'm trying to settle on preferred formats for reading tech books (full of graphic elements) and text-only books (novels, non-fiction expository works) on my iPad2.
PDFs are limited because they lack the page-turning metaphor in iBooks. (Although I've read that Adobe has added tools to inDesign that do support reflowing text, I have no idea whether a properly tagged pdf would support the "swipe to turn the page" UI metaphor in iBooks, nor how one would or could know that a pdf is appropriately tagged to do so).
On the other hand, when I read an ePub book enhanced with graphic elements such as tables, anything beyond a simple text-only table doesn't survive magnification (too small to read at default sizing, too blurry to read when double-tapped). That's especially true for screenshots of dialog boxes or other captures of computer screen elements). Is that a limitation of the ePub format, or is it possible for the ePub to be created so that it's graphic elements are resolution-independent?
    Thanks so much,

Minute by minute, I'm vacillating between the two formats. For exploration, I'm using ePub and pdf copies of Robin Williams and John Tollet's Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: A Quick Refernce Guid to Mastering Lion! A few more confounding variables:
I can see why the "page swipe" thing doesn't influence you (in pdf format, the same gesture goes back and forth between pages, just without the curling page.
It's not possible to make notes while reading a document in pdf format.
It's virtually impossible to know what page to turn to in an ePub when it says "as discussed on page 27." Fortunately, many of those internal reference are accompanied by hyperlinks, which (curiously) don't work while reading in pdf format.
It's not possible to select text with the cursor while reading in pdf format (this one really surprised me).
On balance, looks as though ePub will win out for me, but I can't fathom why graphics don't scale. The curling page eye candy in ePub clearly shows that the format supports impressive on-the-fly graphics transformations.

  • IBooks Author for iPad, ePub for iPhone?

I understand iBooks Author creates books ONLY for iPad.
So what happens If i want the book I am working on for iPhone as well? ... Do I create 2 versions:
iPad - iBooks Author Multi-Touch edition
    iBooks - Standard ePub version
Is there a way for me to state the iBooks version to ONLY show up for iPhone and iPod Touch .... ? So I am effectivly putting on 2 different books ...
    Thanks,
    Ben

At this time, beyond the categories you can choose from in iTunes Producer/Assets, how you describe your app is basically up to you Apple will let you know if they disagree.
The Yellow Submarine book is epub and available for both iPhone and iPad....you may want to take a look at it for ideas, etc.
As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

  • Enhanced book for iPad, built on iBooks Author

    Hi all
I am sorry if these are similar questions to ones asked before, but I wondered if things might be different since they were last asked.
I have delivered an enhanced book built for iPad and it is currently in the review status, not in 51 stores. My questions (of which I have heard many myths about):
    1) As it's an enhanced book (created on iBooks Author), there are lots of videos, galleries etc which make the publication about 1 gig. I have heard that although there is a 2 gig limit, some authors have had responses from Apple saying that it should be kept to max 200mb and therefore rejected. True or false do you reckon?
    2) Mine is a travel guide about a specific area of Spain and it is all about solutions to the traveller. Therefore as well as lots of text, there is a Useful Links section that links to companies websites  such as car hire  - their logos are next to the URL's in my book. Do you think Apple will be ok with their logos visible and external web links? It is simple to remove it if necessary but in truth it is a resource for my readers.
    3) I have heard varying reports of 3 hours to 55 days for the review process to be complete. Does anybody know if it is longer for an enhanced book due to the complexitied of its build?
    4) I have heard reports that if it fails, Apple will tell you how to rectify it. Is this true and is it easy to resubmit?
    5) I have also heard reports of Apple simply rejecting without explanation. That would be so painful. I have spent 6 months and a lot of investment. I would be devestated. is this true?
    6) Any other advice? It has been in review for 3 days only so far. Any ideas on current wait time for enhanced books built for ipad, created on iBooks Author?
It's an anxious time isn't it?!
    Thanks.

    1. Max size is 3 GB, but   take  into acount you want  updates at some stage and need to allow "space"
    2. URLs  are usually excepted IF they are not competitors of Apple iBooks Store - ie Amazon. Any logo is usually copyrighted by the  company.  Any potential copyright infringements  could be rejected by th review team.
    3. Time taken in Review depends how busy they are  without regard to your  content.
    4.  If your book fails the review,  you will be issued a ticket - A recent email advised changed to the ticketing procedures.
    Ticket Catalog Report
The Catalog Reports module on iTunes Connect now contains a Ticket Catalog Report. The report contains details for all tickets that have been assigned to your iTunes Connect account.
    iBooks Store Formatting Guidelines Update
The iBooks Store Formatting Guidelines include important information to help you avoid common errors when publishing on the iBooks Store. The new version of the guidelines includes updated information for copyrighted terms, supported languages, series metadata, What's New descriptions, book assets files, and more.
Download the updated iBooks Store Formatting Guidelines from the Deliver Your Content module on iTunes Connect.
    5.  The review team will pass or fail your book,  fail is dealt with above. Pass... means its in the store. All you need to  do is keep checking status in iTC.
    6. is the same asnwer as 3.    You wait and Check in iTC to monitor if your book  is passed or ticketed.
Other advice,  open iTC  >  Deliver your Content >  on the top right are a number of PDF, download and  read  study them. Below them is a video.. take time to  view the video and take notes.
The above extracts are from an email  from iBooks, the links should still work, if not  they are basically to open your iTunes Connect - Deliver your content section.
Last  bit of advice, check everything  at least twice before uploading to the store. Remember issues with copyright. Dont use anything just  because its online. Dont copy text or images from other  websites and give credits/links to any that are subject to Common Licence conditions... and finally.. be patient, time , tide and Apple move at their own speed.

  • DPS(PDF) on Content Viewer V24 for iPad

    Hi all,
    I created DPS Magazine Decmber issue (1024 x 768: Image = PDF),
and checked it(not published folo) on Content viewer v24(2.9.0.0.63929) for iPad.
I set Folio version: v22 on Folio Builder menu, because of my released viewer app is v22.
On iPad1, pinch-zoom works well, but text rendering doesn't work.
On iPad2, New iPad, pinch-zoom and text rendering work well.
My DPS Magazine Novermber issue, text rendering also doesn't work on v24 iPad1.
It worked well on v23 iPad1.
Is this a just problem of Content viewer v24(2.9.0.0.63929) for iPad?

I was able to replicate the issue and have reported this as a Bug. I'll update you directly when this is resolved.
