Epub to iPad

I am trying to get a finished epub to an iPad. I have the file in my dropbox folder. When I copy the link and email the link to my iPad, every thing seems to be working fine. But when I try to download the file i get:
Download Failed
Safari cannot download this file.
I do have two iPads and one (the master) has the dropbox app. I am able to download all my epubs (10) to the (master) and open them in iBooks just fine. So the only difference is the dropbox app, vs. the dropbox link. I need to send some of these epubs out to others for testing but they can not download.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help!

I'm not quite sure how Safari would handle a Dropbox link.
If it isn't very large you should be able to email the document rather than the link, and then open it from the ipad email app onto whatever ereader app you are using.

The iBooks app only syncs content you get from the iBooks Store. Anything else has to be synced through iTunes.

  • Epub for iPad

When preparing an epub for the iPad what is the correct way to get size of text to be smaller or larger. Should that be done using h1, h2, tags etc. or should that be set in the css using the font-size property.
One other question: Does anyone know of a good program to edit xhtml tags? For example, if I want to change a <p> tag to <h1>.

h1 and h2 tags -- and probably all HTML tags -- come with some more luggage, apart from the size. These two, for example, are bold by default; from h3 on (or perhaps it was h4), they are italic. Depending on the browser (which is, for me, an unknown quantity of the iPad), it also might have more or less space above and below, keep its lines together, etc.
If you want exact control over font sizes, use css exclusively. Exact control, by the by, is not limited to having to express every (or even any) size in points or pixels. You can express everything in percentages, as in: this header should be 120% of the main font size. This has the advantage the user can scale his view up and down at will.
There are roughly three approaches, and you can mix and match whatever you desire:
    1. Shun everything from HTML; use only 'plain' paragraphs, and modify them using classes in your CSS.
    2. Use whatever HTML has for its intended purpose, but modify the elements to your liking. Beware, as some browsers assign more 'default' attributes to these element than others.
    3. Use plain HTML. It might sound silly, but it does mean the user has full control over his system. Again: don't know for the iPad, but both Safari and Internet Explorer allow a default CSS to style otherwise unstyled HTML.
I think this covers the basics. How the epub viewer in the iPad is implemented? No idea. Do you have one to play around with?

  • Can I use Indesign to create an ePub for iPad with expandable images?

Hello everyone!  I'm creating a book for iBooks on the iPad.  It is a basic book that has short chapters of text with pictures. Reading Terry White's, the Adobe evangelist, blog I saw that his attempt with InDesign seemed straight forward, without a need for html skills (which I don't have.)  So I would make the investment in InDesign if it is suitable.
BUT! I would like to add an extra feature that I have seen in some iBooks: When  you double-tap an image the text disappears and the image expands and  fills the page. And when you double-tap the image again it goes back to  normal. Can this be done in InDesign? How?
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thank you!

Size your image so that the longest dimension is 1024 pixels.
Screen size of iPad is 1024 x 768.
In iBooks, when a user double-taps on an image, iBooks will open the image in full-screen view and scales the image to its largest dimension.
In normal book view, iBooks displays all images at their maximum size unless they're larger than the iBooks page, in which case they are displayed to the max width or height of the page (until double-tapped on).
You can constrain the image size in iBooks with certain HTML coding. (Unlike other epub display software and devices, iBooks ignores CSS height and width instructions unless you make specific use of a <div> tag.)

  • Export pages to epub in ipad

Please  tell about size limitations of images and videos while exporting pages to epub.

Follow Peter's advice. Pages ’09 v4.n can export to RTF.
In Pages v5+, you can press command+A to select all of your body text. Then from the Pages menu, Choose Services > New TextEdit Window Containing Selection.
This exploits the fact that Pages v5+ copies content to the Clipboard as RTF text, and its return to TextEdit is preserved.

  • Videos in ePub for iPad

Videos work (horizontal or vertical) in regular xhtml files declared in spine. But when I try putting them in a 'linear="no"' declaration, they are only positioned correctly in landscape.
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have a solution (other than not using a 'linear="no"' declaration)?
    Thanks

    Some things to consider:
    1. Centering and space above and below your div can be accomplished in CSS with:
    div.group {
    width:50% !important;
    margin-top: 1.0em;
    margin-bottom: 1.0em;text-align: center;}
There might be other and better ways to accomplish this. I'm not expert in CSS or HTML; I only know what has worked for me in previous projects.
    2. In iBooks, there is a bug (or "feature") that causes iBooks to ignore text-align for some elements (such as <p>) if iBooks' preferences are set to Full Justification = ON. Instead of being centered, those elements will be left-aligned (or maybe justified? I haven't tested.) This is the default setting, so most users likely leave it that way. (<h> elements are not affected by this bug.)
This is detailed in one of Liz Castro's blog posts and also on Walt Shiel's blog:
    http://www.pigsgourdsandwikis.com/2010/06/beating-ibooks-bugs.html
    http://waltshiel.com/2010/06/23/one-solution-to-ibooks-1-1-centering-problem/
One fix is to wrap the text inside such an element in empty <span> tags.
    3. I don't know what your intended audience is, but keep in mind that iBooks is way behind Amazon and BN.com in terms of sales volume. Kindle and Nook don't support resizing images (yet, anyway), so unless your book depends on this photo treatment to deliver its message, you might be putting a lot of time and effort into a feature that few readers (yet, anyway) can take advantage of.
    4. If you use Twitter, you might want to follow the hashtag #eprdctn -- it's used by a small community of ebook designers to exchange information about the constantly changing ebook design world.
    5. Other good sources of info:
    http://ebookarchitects.com/
    http://www.kindleformatting.com/ (I know it's not iBooks-related, but it's full of good info)

    Hello everyone,
I formatted my SSD and since then  the F11 key doesn't function.
However I had already formatted once and F11 worked
Do you have a method to make the F11 key functional again?
Here is the process I did: Rescue and Recovery ==> Save now ==> Support for disaster recovery.
He asks me is to create CD / DVD or on the internal hard drive but there is nothing in the list ... And the ok button is grayed out. And if I cancel it, I am still the backup. But the F11 key does not work for all ...

  • Images not visible in epubs in Ibook

    Hi.
I try to create an epub containin lots of images. All the images are of maximum size 500*500.
When trying to view the epub in ipad, a few of the images are not seen. Only their captions are visible.
But when I double tap the place where the images should be actually present, the images open fine in full screen.
At times, the imae just appears for one second and then vanishes.
Has anybody faced similar issues? All imaes I use are jpg files.
Any help in this regard will be greatly helpful.

By George, that did it! I had regenerated previews, but I missed the main issue.
Why would thumbnails disappear like that?
    Thanks for your help.

  • How to convert an Indesign CC print file to ePub

I have an InDesign CC 2014 book created for print and now need to convert it to an ePub for iPad, Kindle etc. It has a number of large illustrations so would be best a fixed layout, not relfowable, ePub. Is it best to increase the font sizes to something like 16pt and are there any other tips for exporting to ePub?
Prompt help will be appreciated, this needs to be done fairly quickly.
    Thanks.

If you want to produce your eBook quickly and easily produce it as a PDF. If you need to produce it as an ePub (fixed or variable) and as a mobi (for Kindle), you will need to repurpose your original inDesign file and learn how to do so, which will take some time.
There are a number of excellent tutorials on Lynda.com and books, such as those by Liz Castro, and, of course, help on the InDesign ePub forum with individual issues.

  • Why does the navigational toc in iPad not show the "Cover" and "Contents" entries?

I recently noticed that the navigational toc in my epub on iPad does not show the "Cover" or "Contents" entries although they do show up okay in ADE. I tried naming the Cover in the <text> portion of the .ncx as "Cover image" and Contents as "Where are things" and these 2 entries showed up in iPad and linked to the proper items. Does iPad choose certain wording to omit these entries?

Thank you for contacting Mozilla support. I understand that you have imported bookmarks and now there are two unsorted bookmark folders.

Hi, I understand that we can create epubs for ipads like this with inDesign: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/tutorials/video/build-single-issue-magazine-ipad.ht ml
I would like to create an interactive annual report to be published on a website. Similar concept as the the above, but not for ipad, only for web.
Please let me know if this is possible and are there any tutorials?

Elizabeth Castro, the author of the excellent "EPUB Straight to the Point" eBook has researched this:

  • EPub with DRM (Digital Rights Management)

    Hi There,
For what I know the people can easily copy the downloaded ePub file and share to others.
Is there a way to apply DRM on ePub on iPad?
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,
    KK

PDF and epub are totally different formats.  Apple's iBookstore does not accept PDF, only .epub and .ibooks formats.
I don't see why you would need DRM for something you only going to distributed in house to colleagues.  Apple or the iBookstore would not seem to be involved in that.

  • CS5.5 InDesign & utilizing older, and new jpgs

I just upgraded from ancient versions of Adobe software & an old MAC, to CS5.5 and an iMAC7.
I moved a lot of older Illustrator-built pages and older Photoshop-ed images, psd originals, + images saved for web and web pages as jpgs,
    all to the iMAC7.
I just started using InDesign a few days ago.
My question:  why does CS5.5 InDesign balk at opening, or allowing my older jpg images as I try to add them to my InDesign pages?
Within CS5.5, it looks like jpgs have come a long way in the past ten years, based on the menue options I see in CS5.5, i.e.,
lots of choices, several new ways to save & use jpgs, etc.
When I try adding images to InDesign pages I get a message saying that "InDesign may not support the file format I'm trying to import, (one of my older jpgs),
or that a plug-in may be missing, or the file may be open in another application".
Seems odd that a new Adobe product like this can't utilize a jpg of any kind, though I appreciate that my previous Adobe software was about 12 years old,
and there have been a lot of additions and improvements from Adobe.  Just trying to understand the brand new InDesign-jpg relationship.
Some learning curve going on here for me.
From really old software & MAC to really new software & MAC.    Thanks for any help.

I am new to InDesign, coming out of Quark on a G4, OS9x . . . yes, really.
Thank you for the introduction to Sandee Cohen.
I'm hoping she's preparing a new book on CS5.5/InDesign.  In the mean time I'm taking your suggestion and getting her current book.
I also have a specific use/opportunity/place for creating & utilizing a broad collection of mp4 files.  From an Adobe tutorial-lesson on ID.5.5 I saw
mp4 files being integrated and anchored into pages, then made useable for epubs, iPhone, iPad, etc.
Further explanation regarding these aspects of ID5.5, and CS5.5 generally from Sandee would be terrific I'm sure.
I'm also a Dreamweaver user, and there the mp4 files will play a major role.
Thanks also for the Lynda connection.  I'm going to sign up for the 7 day trial as soon as I get my first full project underway here shortly.
When I signed up for my Adobe account, my name was already taken, so I am apparently 'Prokofiev' here.
I may find out how I can actualy post my picture however, as you do.  That there's only one of.
Thank you again Bob.  Ron Vaughn.
