EPub vs. PDF for tech books

I'm trying to settle on preferred formats for reading tech books (full of graphic elements) and text-only books (novels, non-fiction expository works) on my iPad2.
PDFs are limited because they lack the page-turning metaphor in iBooks. (Although I've read that Adobe has added tools to inDesign that do support reflowing text, I have no idea whether a properly tagged pdf would support the "swipe to turn the page" UI metaphor in iBooks, nor how one would or could know that a pdf is appropriately tagged to do so).
On the other hand, when I read an ePub book enhanced with graphic elements such as tables, anything beyond a simple text-only table doesn't survive magnification (too small to read at default sizing, too blurry to read when double-tapped). That's especially true for screenshots of dialog boxes or other captures of computer screen elements). Is that a limitation of the ePub format, or is it possible for the ePub to be created so that it's graphic elements are resolution-independent?
Thanks so much,

Minute by minute, I'm vacillating between the two formats. For exploration, I'm using ePub and pdf copies of Robin Williams and John Tollet's Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: A Quick Refernce Guid to Mastering Lion! A few more confounding variables:
I can see why the "page swipe" thing doesn't influence you (in pdf format, the same gesture goes back and forth between pages, just without the curling page.
It's not possible to make notes while reading a document in pdf format.
It's virtually impossible to know what page to turn to in an ePub when it says "as discussed on page 27." Fortunately, many of those internal reference are accompanied by hyperlinks, which (curiously) don't work while reading in pdf format.
It's not possible to select text with the cursor while reading in pdf format (this one really surprised me).
On balance, looks as though ePub will win out for me, but I can't fathom why graphics don't scale. The curling page eye candy in ePub clearly shows that the format supports impressive on-the-fly graphics transformations.

  • Poor image quality in pdf for Aperture book

Can anyone tell me how to retain the quality of original images when I export to PDF for book production in Aperture?
I am trying to produce a book with 11 pages, in large soft back format.  Most of the images are black and white, and all are PNGs.  Individual files size are typically 12MB - 20MB, and  the longer side of the images is mostly over 5000 pixels.  They all look very clean and crisp full screen in Aperture, and there are no warning triangles in the page make-ups to highlight any instances of poor resolution.
I’m producing the PDF, via ‘Print’ > ‘Save as PDF’.  The resulting file is 2.6MB.
Viewed in Preview, some of the images in the PDF superficially appear to be OK.  Some are not - and are very indistinct.  Zooming in on the images in Preview shows that very few are useable.
I produced a colour book, with larger pages last year and was very happy with both the PDF and the finished book in print.  Some example file sizes from that one were:  15.3MB (3950x2633) and 9.30MB (2880x 1920).
I had expected the black and white images to work even better.
What am I doing wrong here?
I'm using Aperture 3.2.1 on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.

I just remade the same book - as a test - in the extra large hardback format (ie. the one I used for the previous publication, last year).
This time, the pictures are fine.  The images appear to be the same quality in the PDF as the originals - much, much better.  The size of the file has increased massively too > up from just 2.6MB to 52.8MB.
So does the books production function work well only with the biggest, most expensive option?
I'd really appreciate some feedback from anyone who's tried the different sizes, and preferably some brilliant ideas to make them all work equally well.

  • Google books vs. iBooks vs. iTunes? how import epub, PDFs, and Google books

I have a new iPad and I'm trying to figure out where my ebooks will be stored. I have a bunch of PDFs and some .epub books, as well as some in Google Books. Do the ones in Google books live in the cloud or do they get downloaded to my device (can I read them when there's no network)? Can I somehow get everything in one app - say, iBooks - can I get the Google books and my .epub and PDF files in there? What's the easiest way to do that? I know I can separately "open in iBooks" each file opened on the device but I'd like to add them in bulk without having to open each one in another app and then add it manually.

    I use Stanza, and iBooks.
Stanza will let you download directly from your MacBook through WiFi, and if you put books (epub or pdf) on a personal webpage, you can add a "website" to Stanza as a source for downloading.
Stanza also has built in sources with thousands of books. You use "get books" at the bottom of the screen, then "catalog" at the top, and you will see Bookstores for $$ books, and several "Free Book" sites including project gutenberg with a huge collection, you can even get sheet music from the master composers, all free.
Stanza runs also on your MacBook, and another program to get for your Mac is "Calibre" - an excellent program that will convert books from one format to another and make the library of books visible to stanza if you turn on the server mode in Calibre.
So with these programs, you go directly to the iPad using WiFi, no cables, no need to sync with iTunes.
    Hope this helps.

  • Gray box for logo generating pdf from fm book

    Greetings,
I have a large FrameMaker book that I've generated pdfs from a million times. We cleaned up our logo, so I dropped it in and tried to generate the usual pdf. a gray box resulted for the logo only. all other artwork displayed fine. i tried scaling down the logo, changing formats, changing import methods, etc. all failed. however, generating a pdf from the book if I remove a few chapters gives me my logo. Am I running out of resources? I'm using tech comm suite 1.3 on vista. There are no clues in the acrobat log. show large images is turned on in the adobe reader.
I used the obvious workaround: generated two pdfs, one with just the logo page and one with the rest of the book, then combined them. But this process is not practical long term. Any clues?

    A couple questions:
What format is the new logo file?
Given that it works with some component files, but not in the book... I'd guess that it may be a resource issue. How much RAM and free space do you have?
And when you "dropped it in," does that mean imported into one file by reference, or copied in, or imported into a template that you used to update all files in the book..... or something else? And if it did update multiple files, did you double-check them to make sure the path to the graphic is correct?

    Hi slacker361,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below may be able to help you with this.  If you have been highlighting text like this successfully, then the first thing I would suggest is to quit the iBooks application and restart your computer.

  • Does anyone know of an e-reader app for the iphone that has text to speech capability? I have a Kindle 3G that can read whole pdf documents and books but I cannot figure out how to do it on my iphone 4.

Does anyone know of an e-reader app for the iphone that has text to speech capability? I have a Kindle 3G that can read whole pdf documents and books but I cannot figure out how to do it on my iphone 4.
All of the apps I have found on the App store either do not have the text to speech capability or if they have it they will only read a page at a time or simply read the text you paste into their window. I really do not understand what is so difficult about having this feature as Kindle provides it--though Amazon does not make the feature available on its iPhone 4 app.
    Please help.

thanks. yes i am aware of the VoiceOver feature but it is NOT the solution to my problem. as you said, it is a solution to a different set of issues. i want the text to speech ability because i there are books i need to read but do not have the time to sit down and read them and have become used to listening to them read to me either by a professional human reader or with the text to speech software on the Kindle.
I think Apple makes the best audio devices but i am really disappointed in this inexplainable shortcoming. if apple can give us siri they ought to be able to design a nice little button that i can push to turn on text to speech while i am in a document, book, magazine or webpage. clearly it is possible as apple has added the "reader" button in safari to have web pages dropped into the reader format.
thanks for your suggestion though, it is what everyone suggests but it does not address the issue.

  • HT4059 Could ibooks read parts of a book or pdf for you? And if it could than how?

could ibooks read parts of a book or pdf for you, and if it could how?

It is the publishers who have to take the decision that they are willing to give Apple (or Amazon or anyone) the rights to distribute their products that way before anything else could be done.  I think the idea needs to be sold to them first.  It would be analogous to what some movie companies now do -- when you purchase a physical DVD from them, you also get rights to download a digital copy which can legally go on your iPad.   Apple's not involved in that case.

    Thanks,

Really? I have never seen a bad review on it.
Yes I have it and I don't need any other book for CR2008. My copy is getting very dog-eared.
You can probably find a copy at your favorite bookstore to peruse so you can decide for yourself. One of my co-workers found ia copy at Barnes and Noble recently-I had to order one.

  • Adobe Reader PDF Corrupted,  What is the # for tech support?

I am not getting the answers to my needs. I need to speak with Adobe Reader.  Most of my PDF are coruppted.? I need to speak with a representative and get this fixed?  What Adobe PDF Repair product will fix this?  and Version 10.1.8  and MAC computer. I need more straight answers. Not vague answers please.

No I am not being vague,  I am not getting the answers to get help on my problems.
Yes I am using Adobe Reader.  That is the files to open. It will not open files.
    I am using "
    http://www.verypdf.com/app/pdf-repair-mac/index.html
    It says
    System requirement
    Mac OS X v 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, etc.
Apparently  it will not support 10.1.8?   I have used other PDF for MAC but that is up to 10.1.7.
I am asking for more info and more help on my problem.  The Adobe website does not clearly offer a phone number to offer people to call in.  I need that option.  I am Deaf.
I am not trying to be rude but I am frustrated. I spend alot of my time looking for one.  Lost all of my files worth over 2 years.  I need to understand how did it get corrupted the first place?  And how to prevent from next time.
I would appreciate more detail info on this.
    Thank you!

  • US EIN Number for Paid Book Account

I should have known better than to go down this path!
Although I basically  started doing the free books and due to what I perceive as tax issues possibly with three countries, I  had no intentions of getting a paid books account.... until last week  after going through the US Tax ID thread.
A problem on the forum is that many people ask for solutions - get them and  dont give any feedback which would help others following their path.
So I decided to apply for an EIN.
Dreading  being put on hold for an extended period as one poster suffered and  musty have had a large bill for the international call - I used a Phone card
( normally used for contacting  family back in the UK)  and set about the task.
I called at  8.30am Sydney time  ( I think 5.30pm est USA time)   Nobody  mentioned the usual  "select 1  for...select 2 for..."  which took about 1 minute.
a redirect got me to the right place and a very helpful, polite agent/operator or whatever title  the tax guys have, asked,  after I mentioned  an EIN was required-  if I had a filled in SS-4 - YES.. it does make it easier to get through the routine. ( download the PDF, print it off and  fill it in before you 'phone)
As per all the others, within 10 -12 minutes I was given an EIN number.  The blurb will follow by post eventually.
So painless and no heartache there....and the cost using the phone card ( CardCost was AU$10) the call cost- AU$0.20c!
    Now its dealing with Apple!
For those with a Free Book account thinking about getting a Paid Book account... you will need to open a new Apple I.D.,  which is non negotiable!
I decided on on a new ID name and opened a new email address.
Went through the iTunesstore "create ID" process - which  hiccuped - I went away for an hour so and on return tried again.. maybe Apple had not updated things  so fast .. but now a new ID application went through OK with the  usual existing information plus the new email and ID name.
Next come the questionnaire re your "stock"  of ePubs, PDFs for converting and digital rights.
I have 12 books which were in the free books - now withdrawn
Ignore the  top line  ooptions to name titles and its seems pointless to me asking what you have ready.. because  any author could go on to create 1000 books!
You are required to have a website - not a problem for me cos that's my "hobby"!   Others may  have a sinking feeling seeing this requirement.
    Don't  panic.. its about support.
Typical Apple they simply adjust a few bits from something they already have.. and while I understand "apps" need a support contact - I fail to see why an e-mail address is not enough ( for apps)  and to me its a complete waste of time ( and money for  some)  to  require  a website.
Afterall anybody with a buying a book which  has been reviewed and approved - may only want to e-mail a "well done"... any problems on the iPad are surely for Apple support to deal with!
Anyway... for those in a panic, as KT pointed out recently.. Facebook ( ugh) should be a suitable vehicle to offer  a point of contact and support.
The more adventurious can look at Wordpress and othe similar " blog" sites... or make  people like me happy and purchase a website.
Thas about it  - I have now  submitted the application and assume Apple will reply after they have confirned the EIN.
I think a lot of people start into these applications  - pre-programmed to expect Apple to make it dificult and while we understand chating across the world online or buy boots from New York and top hats from Hong Kong... most  people have a dread of tax offices in their own city let alone on the other side of  the planet.
patience and  bit of pre planning and preparation make it easy.

It took about a week for me. Make sure your email software doesn't treat mail from [email protected] as junk.
    Michi.

  • HT4168 I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?

I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, and much written word, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?....
Basically what I want to do is publish the document into both an eDocument, and a hard copy document. What is the best way to do this?

No Peter, this statement came right off the Apple ePub statement when outlining how to use ePub. the full context is:

ePub is an open ebook standard produced by the International Digital Publishing Forum. Pages ’09 lets you export your documents in ePub format for reading with iBooks on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
iBooks supports both ePub and PDF file formats, and you can export both from Pages.
When to use ePub or PDF
Use ePub when text is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a book, a report, a paper, a thesis, or classroom reading material.

Creating an ePub Document to Read in iBooks
You can export any Pages word processing document to the ePub file format for reading in an ePub reader, such as the iBooks application on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Documents created in page layout templates can’t be exported to the ePub format.
Documents exported to ePub format will look different than their Pages counterparts. If you want to get the best document fidelity between the Pages and ePub formats, style your Pages document with paragraph styles and other formatting attributes allowed in an ePub file. A sample document is provided on the Apple Support site that features styles and guidelines to help you create a Pages document that’s optimized for export to the ePub file format, which you can use as a template or a guide. To learn more about using paragraph styles in Pages, see the topics under the heading “Working with Styles” in the Pages built-in help.
To read your ePub document in iBooks on your mobile device, you must transfer the ePub file that you create onto your device.
To use the “ePub Best Practices” sample documentTo learn more about using the ePub format and get a better feel for how a Pages document might appear as a book in iBooks, it’s a good idea to download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document. After reading the guidelines and instructions within the document, you can use it as a template to create your own document. You can also import the styles from the sample document into a new document you create.
Download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document at the following web address:
    http://images.apple.com/support/pages/docs/ePub_Best_Practices_EN.zip
Do either of the following:Use the sample document as a template.Import the paragraph styles from the sample document into a new or existing Pages document.
Export the document you create to ePub format to see how it looks in iBooks.
Preparing an existing Pages document for export to ePub format
Documents exported to the ePub format automatically appear with page breaks before every chapter. A table of contents is automatically generated, which allows readers to jump quickly to any chapter title, heading, or subheading in the book. In order to create a meaningful table of contents, it’s important to apply appropriate styles within your document. The ePub reader uses the paragraph styles to determine which items should appear in the table of contents for your book.
Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template.
