EPub with Embedded Fonts Causes iBooks/Mac to Hang

I have an ePub that I created with InDesign CC that I want to sell on the iBookstore. I've embedded the main font for the book, which is Adobe Caslon Pro. The text looks great in iBooks for Mac and iOS. However, in iBooks for Mac, if I click on the A up in the top right, to see what the font viewing choices are, I get an endless spinning beach ball and the only way out is to force quite iBooks.
This does not happen on iBook for iOS. Everything works as expected. I can go into the font menu and change fonts, sizes, etc. with no problems.
I've done extensive searching on the internet and can't find where anyone else is having this problem.
Hoping that someone here might have a clue.
I'm running the latest versions of Mavericks and iBooks.
Thanks in advance.

a brody, thanks for the advice. I can't say that when the Energy Saver settings have been set such that hard disk sleeping is not allowed that moving data between or among drives has been slow by any means, but I may try configuring the drives in a "normal" fashion as you suggest.
One question, though. In the main (rear) carrier of my computer, obviously I could set the jumpers to Master and Slave, but with only a single drive in the front carrier, would the advice be to set this to Master or Cable Select? It's this drive in the front carrier that seems to throw the system out of whack when it comes to the system trying to access it when it's already spun down. Instead of spinning it back up, the system just hangs (when the Energy Saver settings allow for the disks to sleep).
If additional information about my drive configuration is needed, I can't get to the system or the inside of the computer right now as it's in the middle of imaging my Tiger installation. However, I do recall that the front carrier had two separate ATA cables available, and I used the ATA 66 cable, which was supplied but not plugged into the logic board. I plugged it in the appropriate connector on the logic board (labeled ATA 66) and installed the drive, setting the jumper to Cable Select. The other (unused) cable is labeled on the logic board as ATA 33. I know that the drive I installed in the front carrier (an Ultra ATA drive) is backwards compatible with ATA 66, but I don't know about ATA 33. I'd have to refer to the Seagate website for further information on how the drive in question could be used.

  • Textfield which accepts multilingual characters with embedded fonts

    Hi all,
    I have a textfield where I can paste text from different languages with device fonts. Now, I want to input multi-ligual text with embedded fonts.
    I have embedded set of fonts, where I can input only english alphabets but not other languages.
    Is there a way to input any language characters with embedded fonts?
    Thank you.

    Thanks for your reply.
    I have embedded font as follows,
    [Embed(source="myfont.ttf", fontName='myfont', mimeType='application/x-font',embedAsCFF="false")]
    With this, I was able to apply this font for english.
    I have tried to paste " मैं कौन हूँ? " on a textfield. But I have not shown मैं कौन हूँ? text.
    And setting text programmatically did not work at all as
    textField.text = "मैं कौन हूँ?";
    If I do this with device fonts, every thing work fine but not with embedded fonts.
    Is there any thing wrong with my code while embedding font?

  • Help with embedding fonts in swf file

    Hi, I am haviing a problem with my fonts displaying in my swf file. I created the flash site using CS4 on a mac. I thought the fonts were embedded but when I tested the swf in safari and firefox the fonts disappeared are all scrunched up in 1/2" on top of each other in several lines. Its a mess. It is displaying in times or some other font when viewed in on a pc browser.
    What I did so far that did not work:
    Made fonts static with animation
    made fonts dynamic with animation
    How can I fix this?
    I am still a beginner using flash so the simpler the option the better.
    Thanks!!!

    there are quite a few ways you could mess this up but no one way that's typical.
    create a new fla.  click on the text tool, select static in the combobox and add a textfield to the stage.  animate it.  test it.  any problems?
    any other way (or ordering of steps) you use to create static text is prone to problems.

  • Why a pdf document with embedded fonts can be copied but is not searchable in pdf reader

    I am writing a pdf files with embedded subset fonts. As required, I am including the ToUnicode and CIDSet objects. To test, I created a simple PDF with two Hebrew characters. I can select the two characters and copy to the clipboard, and paste it properly into another application such as Word. But I am not able to search for a word containing these two characters. Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) displays the message that the word was not found. So in essence, I have created a PDF document which can be copied properly, but is not searchable. Any idea what I might be missing when creating the document?
    Additional information: 1. The file in question is a minimal file with just two characters. I have tested with many such files in many different languages including English. None of the files are searchable. 2. Curiously, if I search for the letter 'e', Adobe reader highlights an incorrect word, even if the letter 'e' does not exists in the file. 3. Adobe acrobat is also not able to search within this file, however when I save the file to another disk file, the saved file now is searchable. I confirmed that the major objects such as the font-file, ToUnicode object, CID object, and the font description objects are the same in the saved file. However, one of the font object is brought up closer to the top of the file. 4. FoxIt is able to search these files properly.

    I figured the app might have that ability - considering you can add text, highlight, add a signature, annotate and draw - so my thought was why not delete a page, or rearrange for that matter?.. That should be an option, this way we don't have to export to one of the other apps to delete or rearrange..
    Thanks for the help, Bernd.
    BTW if anyone is looking - PDF Max can do all of the above and delete and rearrange. With PDF Splicer you can delete and rearrange as well, but it has no other features.
    And as for Steve Werner whose comment was deleted after it got to my inbox, it is much more than a Reader, as you can plainly see from the amount of tasks the Reader app can do above.

  • How can I create a PDF with embedded fonts (not a subset of the font) from Excel?

    I need to create PDF's from Excel spreadsheets. The PDF needs to have embedded fonts but every time I create one it only has a subset of the embedded font.  I have tried setting preferences in the Acrobat add in (unchecked the "Subset Embedded Fonts" option and also tried with the Subset Embedded Fonts checked but the percentage set to only 1% in an attempt to force full font to be embedded.)
    I also tried opening the resulting PDF with Acrobat Pro XI but could not figure out how to add the font in.
    A method to accomplish the results from either tool would be great.

    Anna;
    Unless you can add those fonts to your system via the Font book and then substitute them in iPhoto, you'll have to either user the available fonts or create your own pages, 8.5 x 11, in an image editor like Photoshop Elements and use them on pages that are one photo per page. Other's have done that with some success.
    If you has PS or PSE create an 8.5 x 11" canvas at 300 dpi. Then you can add your photos, add text (if PS can use the text), and create your own layout.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Problem with embedding fonts in Illustrator CS5

    I have just installed Illustrator CS5, and have tested creating a PDF document based on one of my existing files, as well as a new file.
    When I open these PDF documents in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, I am told that Acrobat cannot access one of the embedded fonts (Korinna BT).
    I have had no issues with embedding this font in Illustrator CS4, and (strangely), when I open these files in other PDF viewers (Preview and PDFPenPro), they report no issues.
    Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    I have removed and reinstalled the font in question, and tested/verified that the font is OK - but still not joy.
    Regards
    Jeremy

    The error message I get is:
    "Cannot extract the embedded font 'MVZTIW+KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular'. Some characters may not display or print correctly."
    When I check the fonts in the PDF in "Document Properties" in Adobe Acrobat the following is shown:
    "KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular
         Type: TrueType
         Encoding: Ansi
         Actual Font: Adobe Serif MM
         Actual Font Type: Type 1"
    It seems that Illustrator is adding some strange "code" ('MVZTIW') to the beginning of the font, which means the actual font can't be found and extracted.

  • Problems with Embedded Font MS PGothic

    Hello,
    After editing a document in Japanese, some characters will not show up. Normally i would attribute this to a missing font pack, but after reinstalling the Japanese font pack on the computer, we strill get the error message:
    "Cannot extract the embedded font 'RNUQGV+MSPGothic-WinCharSetFFFF-H'"
      Some characters may not display or print correctly.
    We create the file with MS Word, and in word we have no problems. It is only after using PDF-Server to create the files does this become a problem. Other Japanese fonts do no seem to have this issue.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Placed PDF (with embedded fonts) reports fonts not available!

    Hi,
    Can anyone tell me why Illustrator CS (I know it's old) should report Fonts missing when the PDF I have placed has definately got the fonts embedded.
    The PDF was made in InDesign CS4 using the default [High Quality Print] setting. If I look at the properties of the created PDF it lists all the fonts as being embedded subsets.
    I know I can get around this by outlining the text but I shouldn't have to.
    Thanks
    Simon Kemp

    So, Illustrator will always require the fonts present and will disregard any embedded fonts?
    That's pretty much it. Remember: Illustrator is not a PDF viewing program. It wants to let you edit the document. PDF is essentially a document exchange format and not really intended for editable content (beyond the extent Acrobat enables). Font designers want you to buy their products if you're going to be doing anything other than reading the text.
    The link-place-flatten trick is good to have in your bag of tricks, but I am not alone in recommending you do not blindly outline all type. Aside from making it nearly impossible for an output service provider to make a possibly necessary last-minute correction, you will not get the proper hinting with very small type. Moreover, if you're dealing with a large amount of text, you'll end up with huge files.

  • Reader V8 problem with embedded font

    Hello,
    I'm having problems opening in Reader V8 the PDF file located at http://www.itech.ca/otf-cff.pdf . The file opens correctly in previous versions of acrobat. AR 4 5 6 7. It complains about the embedded font. Can anyone help me identify the reason why the font cannot be extracted ? Is there anything wrong in the PDF file when describing the font, or it's the way I'm generating the embedded font ? Is there any tool I can use to help me debug this ? Any help or hint would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Rabih,
    Please repost in the Reader forum. This forum is for pdf specification
    issues. Usually, the problems you are having are due to each successive
    version of Acrobat adhering to standards more strictly. A pdf with a
    problemsome font Acrobat or Reader might have tried to render the pdf
    and hope for the best. Now it may reject the pdf.

  • Problems with embedded font on spark RichText control

    « Hide
    I have an embedded font that appears correctly when used with Halo components, but when associated with the spark RichText component, it is not recognized.
    The embedded font is defined in css file, my css file
    @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
    @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo";
    @font-face {
    src:url("assets/fonts.swf");
    fontFamily: "Helvetica Neue";
    @font-face {
    src:url("assets/fonts.swf");
    fontFamily:"Helvetica Neue";
    fontWeight: bold;
    global{
    color:#333333;
    fontFamily: "Helvetica Neue";
    fontSize:12px;
    The embedded font it used in the following manner:
    <mx:Label styleName="panelTitle" text="Hello There"  width="263" x="21" y="11"/>
    <s:Group width="410" x="38" y="52" height="50">
    <s:RichText styleName="panelTitle" text="Hello There" fontFamily="Helvetica Neue"  width="263" x="21" y="11"/>
    </s:Group>
    The Label shows the embedded font correctly while the RichText control does not. It does not matter if the fontFamily is specified explicitly on the control or not.
    I created a bug SDK-22137, but since I'd need to get this working soon any help would be appreciated.

    Just a friendly reminder. Many of the examples on that site are fairly old and havent been updated to use the latest APIs. For example, "cff" has recently been renamed to "embedAsCFF". In fact, here's a better example:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                   xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"

        </s:layout>
        <fx:Style>
            @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo";
            @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
            /* DefineFont3 (embedAsCFF == false) */
            @font-face {
                src: url("assets/georgia.TTF");
                fontFamily: embGeorgia;

                fontFamily: embGeorgia;
                fontWeight: bold;
                embedAsCFF: false;
            /* DefineFont4 (embedAsCFF == true) */
            @font-face {
                src: url("assets/georgia.TTF");
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                fontWeight: normal;
                embedAsCFF: true;
            @font-face {
                src: url("assets/georgiab.TTF");
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                fontWeight: bold;
                embedAsCFF: true;
            mx|Label {
                fontFamily: embGeorgia;
            s|RichText {
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                fontLookup: embeddedCFF;
        </fx:Style>
        <mx:Label text="Halo Label" />
        <mx:Label text="Halo Label (bold)" fontWeight="bold" />
        <s:RichText text="Spark RichText" />
        <s:RichText text="Spark RichText (bold)" fontWeight="bold" />
    </s:Application>
    Also, depending on what you're trying to do, this may help you: http://blog.flexexamples.com/2009/06/14/using-a-cff-embedded-font-with-a-halo-label-contro l-in-flex-4/. Basically, you can set the textFieldClass style on certain Halo controls and have them use the mx.core.UITLFTextFieldClass (instead of the default mx.core.UITextFieldClass) so they can take advantage of the new CFF fonts.
    In fact, here's the same example as above, but with the single embedded font:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                   xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
                   xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo">
        <s:layout>
            <s:VerticalLayout paddingLeft="20" paddingTop="20" />
        </s:layout>
        <fx:Style>
            @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo";
            @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
            /* DefineFont4 (embedAsCFF == true) */
            @font-face {
                src: url("assets/georgia.TTF");
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                fontWeight: normal;

                embedAsCFF: true;
            mx|Label {
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                textFieldClass: ClassReference("mx.core.UITLFTextField");

  • Correct dimensions for a text with embedded font

    Can someone please tell me how can I find the  width, height and lineHeight for a text  that is inside a RichEditableText component if I'm useing  embedded fonts as cff?
    I have a font that has  big loops on letters like f,j,g.  I
    tried to get the infos from the richEditableText and richEditableText.textFlow. I even tried to compute the height of the text line by line with textFlow.flowComposer.getLineAt(i).height. But none of this got me a value big enought to cover the loops too.

    Might be an issue with the font.  Try checking each of the children in the RichEditableText.  Some of them should be TextLines.  See what they report.

  • Using duplicateMovie( ) on movieClips with embedded fonts

    If I have a SWF with an embedded font, say all of Times New
    Roman, and I use duplicateMovie( ) to make another copy of it at

    enough to just keep one copy of the font data ??
    Thanks!

    Anyone have any ideas on this? --

  • Problem with embedded fonts

    Downloading pdf files from the web.
    Cannot extract the embedded font - does not display properly, does not print. Also sometimes get out of memory

    The wording extract is a question. Are you trying to copy the information? That may not be possible and may also be done on purpose by your bank or other company so that you can not copy the information. With Reader there is not much you can do. Either is displays correctly or not. The only option you have is to find the font, download it, and install it. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find the correct font as many fonts have the same names, but are not compatible.
    So apparently these PDFs are being sent to you by these companies. Do they appear correct when viewing them in Reader? If so, you can probably print them by printing as a graphic.

  • Problems in CS3 and AS3 with embedded fonts

    Hi. I recently downloaded the trial version of CS3 to test it
    out. I'm an experience AS2 developper, and have 10 years of C, C++,
    C#, Java, PHP ... programming experience on BIG projects before
    starting flash.
    I have been trying to use an embedded font in AS3 with a
    dynamically created textfield. I've tried all the examples in
    O'Reilly's ActionScript 3.0 Cookbook. They suggest using the
    [Embed] meta tag, but quite honestly it does nothing in CS3. I had
    the Size Report option selected, and it shows clearly by the file
    size the font isn't present in the SWF.
    Then I tried doing it the way I did in Flash 8. Again there
    no luck. My TextField exists, but there is simple no font being
    rendered.. Here is my bit of code.
    In my library I have a symbol called arialBold. In the
    linkage settings, I have "Export for ActionScript" checked, and
    "Export in first frame" checked. The class is "arialBold" but I
    wonder if that's right? and the Base class is "flash.text.Font"
    I tried every variation I could think of. I must be doing
    something wrong. You can find my file here :
    http://www.newcommerce.ca/as3/fonttest.fla
    Thanks for your help! If you can fix this, i'll be very
    happy!

    this code works
    var tf:TextField = new TextField();
    var tfor:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
    tfor.font = new _TrebushetMS().fontName;
    tfor.italic = true;
    tf.width = 300;
    tf.height = 200;
    tf.embedFonts = true;
