Epubs and equations in InDesign

In ID CS6, is there a way type/insert/import equations so that they will be maintained upon epub conversion?
I have some experience with InDesign, but minimal with equations so as much detail as possible would be great!

I think you have have to rasterize them using Object > Object Export Options. Choose a resolution compatible with the  device you expect them to be viewed on. I'd probably choose 300 ppi to be safe.

  • New to Epubs and InDesign is Crashing

    hi, I'm a rookie when it comes to forums and to publishing epubs, but I have run into several walls and I'm in need of some help, so here goes ...
    I've done a lot of research on ePubs and I have a document that's ready to go. It initally started out as a file that would be PERFECT for print, but then I realized that that's not going to work, so I stripped out my selected fonts and changed them to Garamond. My images are now embedded in the paragraphs so they show up where they should when I Export for Digital Editions, but ... the problem I have is that Indesign Crashes out on me after EVERY export.
    What's more, after I broke my single "master" file up into chapters, started using the book function, and started making a functional TOC, I got the message "Adobe InDesign is shutting down. A serious error was detected. ..." So I trashed my preferences and am starting new here with this forum.
    I have CS4 and I don't know what's happening to cause these crashes, I don't want to rebuild this entire document again to have the same result. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance.

    Pink: This is kind of mysterious. As you're probably gathering, I don't think this is an installation problem with InDesign. I think you are encountering a bug.
    It's not a bug I have heard of, but there are not many people doing EPUB work with CS4. It's improved so dramatically in CS5 and CS5.5 that I think pretty much anyone who is working with EPUB is working with the current versions of the software.
    It sounds goofy that a new file with only 6 words in it crashes InDesign.
    Please upload your crash report to http://pastebin.com/ and post a link here, and I'll take a look at it.
    Does exporting a completely empty file also crash ID?

  • InDesign CS5 / 5.5 EPUBs and EpubCheck

    Hi everyone,
    It is known among EPUB book developers that from CS5 version, InDesign ophuscates embedded fonts in EPUB export, using its own Adobe algorythm for that.
    That makes EPUBs work fine in most eReaders, but makes standard EpubCheck tool fail to validate them, because it only admits IDPF encryption of fonts, as far as I know.
    Does anyone here if this issue is fixed, somehow? It is becoming a bottleneck and a headache for many ebook designers using InDesign!
    Thanks !!
    Ignacio.

    Thanks Steve,
    Yes I know. Actually I know Liz Castro personally
    But thing is that prior versions of InDesign tried to choose whether embed fonts or not, or just embed "embeddable" fonts. At least you could choose what to embed or what not. Now, it is all or nothing, embed everything of nothing at all.
    Actually if you open EPUB and change slightly one single line of the font encryption, epubcheck works fine but then all of your styles are blown up !
    It is a pity because InDesign ophuscated EPUBs work fine in iBooks, eReaders, and so on... but most Publishers requiere epubcheck 100% pass or they systematically reject your work...
    Crazy!
    Thanks again

  • Equations in InDesign

    I have a document which needs to have (non-simple) engineering equations inserted. This is the third booklet in a series, the first 2 docs were created in InDesign but did not have much technical jargon.  I would rather not put this document into Word, so I have downloaded the equation editor "MathType" in the hope that the equations could be done from within InDesign.  The MathType 'creaters' say it is compatible with InDesign. However, as far as I can tell, the only way I can get an equation into InDesign, is by copy & paste which means it goes in as a figure/object. Well, this is fine, except uniform re-sizing through the document might be a problem, as well as the fact that the equation does not seem to be editable, and it seems that the equation would need to be re-created, if there are any changes to it.
    My question is, is it possible to put editable (complex) equations directly into InDesign Documents? - perhaps even by some other equation plug-in?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    For one-off equations most people use MathType (and live with external editing), but yes: there are a couple of commercial plugins that add editable equations to InDesign. InMath (http://www.itip-gmbh.eu/en/products/inmath/) and MathMagic (http://www.mathmagic.com/product/pro.html) are probably the best known.
    A thorough discussion on MathType and a few plugins can be found at http://objectmix.com/adobe-indesign/225551-indesign-equations.html

  • How do export a double page spread photo to epub and fill an ipad screen?

    I'm completely new to indesign. I'm using XP and Indesign CS6.  I'm testing my epub on the new IPad 3.
    I've published numerous books in print form with major publishing house in the US.  I need to quickly get a copy of the book in epub format for publication on the ipads. Maybe later for the nook, etc. Eventually I will want to design new ebooks from scratch.
    We are scanning the book spreads [photos and text together a double page spread] and want to show those spreads on the ipad as a single horizontal image with no page gutter.  We've placed those jpg spreads in indesign as a double page spread. When we publish to epub it does not show as a double page spread.  It only shows up as a horizontal image on either the left or right side of a vertical book [gutter layout] view on the ipad. It never spreads out to fill the entire ipad screen.  What simple thing are we missing?
    Thanks so much
    Dwight

    "The" iPad does not exist as a target, so I'm assuming you mean you export to a regular ePub and are viewing it using iBooks.
    iBooks is page-agnostic. ePubs do not support the notion of "left-right" pages. In fact, iBooks is the only ePub viewer I am aware of that even tries to show "two" pages at a time.
    Re-design your document so each image appears on its own page.

    If you want an overview of digital publishing, including EPUB, Digital Publishing Suite, etc. from InDesign CC, this book is very helpful:

  • Align MathType equations in InDesign

    Hello
    Anyone know how to align mathtype equations in InDesign CS 4 automatic? I read many discussions topics here about scripts that apply equations and align, but I want to know if there are one way to use any script just to align the equations automatic in InDesign for MAC OS, there are any script that can do just that for Mac?
    Thanks
    Jonas!

    Hello,
    If you work on PC, I think I can help you by my system of scripts (MT-Script).
    You can read more about it on my site (http://mtscript.ru) or in Scribd publication (http://www.scribd.com/doc/73272275/MT-Script-or-How-to-Work-With-MathType-Equations-in-InD esign).
    So, what you can do with my scripts? I think... all you need to prepare your publication very and very quickly.
    For example,
    you can paste equations from Word into InDesign (you can work traditionally via exporting equations to Eqn00010.eps... and placing these equations into InDesign publication instead of texts with tags like this <<Eqn00010.eps>> ... but I'm just ready to suppose you new and very simple technick ... simply paste all doc-file WITH equations (like MathType objects) into InDesign and process it by MT-UnembedEqn script ... and that's all);
    you can edit equations directly in InDesign as native objects;
    you can create new equation in InDesign without Word;
    you can format all or some equations at a moment directly in InDesign;
    you can find and change in equations;
    you can export InDesign publication to RTF with editable MathType equations. Yes! You can do it... It's very simple... one click procedure. The forward and backward conversion Word-InDesign have been perfectly created in MT-Script;
    you can test it as full functional system from the second part of Friday till the end of Monday every week;
    you can ask me about MT-Script (MathType+InDesign problems as well) just now --> [email protected]
    I'm very pleased to help you with MathType equations in InDesign.
    BUT if it's usefull for you I can create a limited version for Mac which can paste, adjust equations and exporting InDesign publication to RTF with editable equations.
    The functionality to create new equations and edit them in InDesign will be restricted because of I don't work with Mac and can't create a "bridge" program to start MathType directly from my scripts on Mac. Sorry.
    Thank you.

  • QR Codes generated and placed in Indesign from an Excel file

    I'm in prepress for a printing company, and we have a project that I'm not sure how to handle. I have an Excel file with 40,000 names, titles, company, address, etc. AND the url for a QR code. I need to generate postcards with all the variable data in place, and use the URL info in the excel sreadsheet to generate a QR code AND place it - all in one action so I can print on the postcards the way I do all my data merge files.
    Does anyone know how to do this? Is it even possible with InDesign?  I would love to hear any solutions to this problem!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Cololitho,
    I'm sorry to say at the time we don't have any in-depth documentation on Tada QR! as writing a vast amount of documentation takes a long time! We will add this in time.
    Since Tada QR! handles bulk QRs by a search and replace, it means that if you can find a way to get the URLs into your InDesign document Tada QR can replace them with QRs.
    The formula I used in the video in excel creates a new column that puts the data into the default format for Tada QRs search pattern.
    It looks like this:
    ="<%"&A1&"%>"
    Where "A1" is the name of the cell of the data you want to format.
    I then drag/repeat the cell containing the formula down the length of the spreadsheet so it is repeated for each data item.
    For example if you have urls:
    http://www.urlone.com
    http://www.urltwo.com
    This should create a new column that looks like this
    <%http://www.urlone.com%>
    <%http://www.urltwo.com%>
    If you can get the data in this format and into your InDesign document,
    you should be able to select "Entire Document" and hit the "Replace All" button without having to change any of the default settings.
    This will replace the all the URLs in that format with QR codes.

    I have created an 100 page booklet in Pages, with many photographs, and much written word, can I export it to ePub, and make an electronic book, because it says that "Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template"?....
    Basically what I want to do is publish the document into both an eDocument, and a hard copy document. What is the best way to do this?

    No Peter, this statement came right off the Apple ePub statement when outlining how to use ePub. the full context is:

    ePub is an open ebook standard produced by the International Digital Publishing Forum. Pages ’09 lets you export your documents in ePub format for reading with iBooks on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
    iBooks supports both ePub and PDF file formats, and you can export both from Pages.
    When to use ePub or PDF
    Use ePub when text is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a book, a report, a paper, a thesis, or classroom reading material.
    More details on using ePubUse PDF when layout is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a brochure, a flyer, or a manual with multiple illustrations.
    More details on using PDF
    Creating an ePub Document to Read in iBooks
    You can export any Pages word processing document to the ePub file format for reading in an ePub reader, such as the iBooks application on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Documents created in page layout templates can’t be exported to the ePub format.
    Documents exported to ePub format will look different than their Pages counterparts. If you want to get the best document fidelity between the Pages and ePub formats, style your Pages document with paragraph styles and other formatting attributes allowed in an ePub file. A sample document is provided on the Apple Support site that features styles and guidelines to help you create a Pages document that’s optimized for export to the ePub file format, which you can use as a template or a guide. To learn more about using paragraph styles in Pages, see the topics under the heading “Working with Styles” in the Pages built-in help.
    To read your ePub document in iBooks on your mobile device, you must transfer the ePub file that you create onto your device.
    To use the “ePub Best Practices” sample documentTo learn more about using the ePub format and get a better feel for how a Pages document might appear as a book in iBooks, it’s a good idea to download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document. After reading the guidelines and instructions within the document, you can use it as a template to create your own document. You can also import the styles from the sample document into a new document you create.
    Download the “ePub Best Practices” sample document at the following web address:
    http://images.apple.com/support/pages/docs/ePub_Best_Practices_EN.zip
    Do either of the following:Use the sample document as a template.Import the paragraph styles from the sample document into a new or existing Pages document.
    Export the document you create to ePub format to see how it looks in iBooks.
    Preparing an existing Pages document for export to ePub format
    Documents exported to the ePub format automatically appear with page breaks before every chapter. A table of contents is automatically generated, which allows readers to jump quickly to any chapter title, heading, or subheading in the book. In order to create a meaningful table of contents, it’s important to apply appropriate styles within your document. The ePub reader uses the paragraph styles to determine which items should appear in the table of contents for your book.
    Note: The Pages document must have been created using a word processing template.

    ?Hi, Sara.
    I'm viewing in Adobe Acrobat Pro. Not sure what my client has.
    And, yes, the boxes are all transparent. I tried pasting the native AI file, and EPS file, with the same result. When viewed at 150% and above, they look perfect. But, when viewed to fit page on screen, they distort.
    They print fine, too.

  • Arabic and Hebrew features InDesign CC (2014 release) not accessible

    Hello,
    I need to create a lay-out with Arabic content in Indesign CC (2014 release). After checking how to go about that via the help-section (online and PDF) I have to conlude that the help does not help me any further.
    It says I need to, from the paragraph panel options, set InDesign to the world-ready paragraph composer in order to have the text direction etc. features enabled. This, however, is not the case. The panel still looks like before and I get no Arabic / hebrew features.
    This is the same for the character panel, wich also does not give the shown options for Character direction as shown in the Help screenshots.
    I have followed all the suggestions in the help section.
    I have also tried setting the default paragraph editor to World-Ready via the preferences, and then restart the program, but still no success.
    Please advise, it's urgent.

    Hi,
    Every change of plugins is resetting preferences.
    Each language has its own preferences. But you move or copy them manually but you might adjust them afterward, because everylanguage has not the same functionality. At least not on the same place.

    Hi William,
    It worked!
    Allthough I did not understand that, from the CC panel, I should install the entire app again. Thought this would go through the preferences window, but I noticed that, when changing the App language in the preferences, the app-list in in the panel changes.
    Only thing is now: all the preferences and personal workspaces are gone:-(
    Adobe realy doesn't make it easy, unless you're into IT, wich i am totally and absolutely not;-)
    Antways,
    thanks for the usefull info;

  • Grey screen of death when copy and paste in InDesign

    Hi,
    So I see a lot of people here are dealing with the Grey Screen Of Death (GSOD) problem on Adobe Content Viewer. I'm on a MacBook Pro i7, and designing in InDesign 5.5.
    What seems to be happening is when I delete buttons from one file, and copy paste the buttons from another file, and then try to view the content on my computer using Adobe Content Viewer, then I get the GSOD.
    I am not getting the GSOD when I update other files - it just seems to be happening when I copy/paste buttons from other files. How do I fix this? I need to be able to preview the content and look for errors before I send it to the client.
    Thanks,
    Jess
    UPDATE: I think it has something to do with dragging pages from other files into InDesign... could use some help from Adobe!

    Thanks for your reply. I talked to the Apple Support again and they told me the server edition could only be used on that OS and if I wanted to use it as something else I could chose not to use the server applications, or buy a regular Mac mini. And that was all they said. Interesting since it was one of their sales persons who told me I could install Snow Leopard.
    Anyway, I got hold of a client disc and it all worked like a charm.
