Eq flat vs. off

I have been setting my eq to flat and have been enjoying the music the way it was originally recorded. I do have a question though. Is their a difference between flat and having the eq off. If no difference why have it set to flat. Or if their is a difference what is it?

william,
If your you've set a preset equalizer option in iTunes, then loaded that song(s) onto your iPod, you will get to hear that equalizer option if you set the iPod EQ to "Flat".
If you have not made any preset option for any of your iPod's songs in iTunes, then Flat and Off will have the same effect.
Finally, "Off", of course, turns off all EQ; iPod, and iTunes-enabled EQ.
Does that make sense?
Check out the Support article about the iPod's equalizer. It should explain it: iPod: About Equalizer options
I hope that answers your question.

  • What's the difference between EQ off and flat?

What is the difference between EQ off and flat? Are all the frequency's at the same place as if it were flat?

OFF uses iTunes EQ settings, if any.
FLAT overrides iTunes EQ settings, if any
    Close.
In Flat, if a song has a preset EQ set in iTunes, it
will use that preset, otherwise it does not use any
    EQ.
In Off, the EQ is not used at all.
Page 28 of the very fine manual for 2n Gen nano:
    Using the Equalizer
You can use equalizer presets to change the sound on iPod nano to suit a particular music genre or style. For example, to make rock music sound better, set the equalizer to Rock. To use the equalizer to change the sound on iPod nano:
Choose Settings > EQ and choose an equalizer preset.
If you assigned an equalizer preset to a song in iTunes and the iPod nano equalizer is set to Off, the song plays using the iTunes setting. See iTunes Help for more information.
Hmmmm...? There's nano's EQ and iTunes' EQ...

  • Boot Another iMac off a Mini?

Would it be possible to boot a G4 700 Flat Panel off of a Mini? Or to put it another way, could I use the G4 FP as a monitor for a Mini?
If it is possible, how is the connection made: Firewire or Ethernet?
    Glenn

    More interesting question is "why?"
Fair question, and the reason is mostly academic. The Mini would get its own monitor.
The G4 700 FP has a glitch on startup about 80% of the time that keeps it from finding the system folder, resulting in the flashing ?. Zapping PRAM is the only known workaround. Otherwise the FP works fine (though it does crash a lot). The Apple techs at the shop can't duplicate the problem (it always boots up fine for them), and their diagnostics don't show any problems. So until it breaks, I live with the bug.
But I like the new Dual Core Mini and am thinking of getting one. I was just curious if I could also use it to boot up the FP too. Thanks for clearing it up for me. Very helpful.

  • Old wiring in a block of flats, who's responsible?

Can't seem to get any clear guidance on this. Now if it's in my flat, fair do's I guess, but outside my flat?
So far I've been told that it's anywhere from the green box in the street that's my responsibility, or from the  junction box in the box of flats to my flat by BT staff. What does a junction box look like. As far as I can make out in our flats, the wire runs along one wall in the corridor, going through lots of small boxes on the way and the individual flats connect off of the boxes, but when the wire comes up my side of the corridor there are no small boxes visible/
The phone line is dead, internet is fine, have checked the phone itself elsewhere, it's fine, have plugged it into the old style box on the wall, same problem, no dial tone.
Really any feedback on this appreciated, I'm on a very low income so £140 would be tough,  and from conversations I've had with BT it could be a lot more than £140 if there are bigger problems, and seeing the state of everything outside my flat that wouldn't surprize me if that was the source of the problems.
I've thought about getting a new line, with new wiring, master socket etc for £130 which I assume is a fixed price, but I'm assuming that would just link into the building line in in my corridor of my floor, not be fresh wiring from outside.

    hamzen wrote:
    Yeah, the bottom one.
If that's the case why did I get told by two people that was either from the junction box in the building where my line splits off to me, or that the junction box was the green box outside the flats, now I'm really confused. From what I've been able to read up that was definitely the case for the new  sockets re BT being responsible up to that connecting box, but for the old ones there was no clear demarcation line for responsibility when it came to a block of flats?
Well I am not sure about older installations. I would have thought that when Openreach took over the external network, it would have included any of the existing wiring. There is nobody else who can work on this section any more.
I would be inclined to report the fault and let the Openreach field technician visit, they are usually very good at sorting this type of problem out, it is probably a wire come disconnected.
When you report it via this page Fault report
It will do an automatic line test which should give an approximate location of the fault.
As the master socket is in your flat, then you should not be charged.

  • How can I rescue Iphoto and Ivideo files from my dead imac 21" hdd?

    Hello,
a month ago (after not using my imac 21" for 3 months) I plugged it in switched it on and as it was booting the fuses of my flat went off and there was a burn smell from my imac. It is out of warranty so I took it to an apple repairshop. Unfortunately it was more than powersupply and somehow the motherboard was damaged too. Costs cheaper to get a new one.
My question is, I have a lot of pictures and videos in iphoto and ivideo. Since I can not use the computer itself, is there a way of connecting the hdd as an external hdd to another pc or mac and get my pictures and videos out??
    Thanks

Did the machine come with Mountain Lion?
Aside from needing the answer to that question (as the instructions are different depending on the original OS), the only safe way is to wipe the drive completely and then reinstall the original OS.
As for third party applications, you will need to check the licensing requirements of those apps to see if you can "pass it on".

  • Use of sums in other formulas

    CA Forum: Formula
Hello all.  I'm dealing with a huge report request that is to be output to excel.  It pulls from a inventory transaction table with tons of records.  I have  grouped by transaction type then summed and counted.  I need to take these sums and counts of each transaction type (3 types) then use these figures in other formulas.  My finished report will have 29 columns, 16 are formulas, 10 are based off these first 6 (sums&counts), the rest of the fields are flat data off the part records(like part #, description, last cost, productcode).  I'm thinking I can get all the data into one report (I was able to create a crosstab with the totals), however it will be huge and I only want to pull over the minimum needed data into the excel sheet.  Being new to Crystal Reports, I was wondering if a subreport is what might be what I need here or if I just some how can get the totals, like they appear in the crosstab, to come over so they can be used in new (summary) report?  I saw something about shared variable as well but my knowledge is limited to what I have picked up hands on.
Any tips or hints are greatly appreciated.  This is the largest report I have had to create.  My past experience is with db2, query400 and what I would normally use to accomplish this task, rpg.  I have CR9& Oracle.

Ahhh, a man after my own heart!
Just a quick warning, if you're pulling tons of data, doing loads of joins, making lots of clever calculations and summarising in all manner of ways, you may find that your report runs like a pig! The SQL Crystal generates is very clunky for starters and adding all the other bits will make developing, testing and running it quite tedious - particularly if you're new the the 'Crystal Way'. If I were you, I'd use a SQL client to figure out a cunning SQL statement that extracts and formats the data and does as many of the calculations and summaries as possible. Once you have this, use the 'Add command' bit in database expert to insert your own clean, quick and non-psychotic SQL code. This will give you something that looks like a file but contains your formatted data.
I may be shouted down for suggesting this but by doing this, I reduced the run-time for a huge extract/calculate/export-to-excel report from 12 minutes down to 18 seconds and made a bunch of the other reports acceptable in the users eyes by reducing the run-speeds dramatically.
Fair enough, the SQL statements are not simple but they run quickly and accurately and thats what counts. If you do decide to give this a try and need a hand, let me know.
BTW, why wouldn't you use RPG to do this?

  • Which EQ setting + volume level is the most 'clear'?

    Hi
Just got an iPod Classic this week (my first ever Apple Product other than iTunes). It's replacing a 30G player from another company from 2006 (ran out of room) that had really good sound. With a simple pair of JVC Marshmallow earbuds, the right mid-volume and the right EQ setting, I could hear all the musical instruments clearly and somewhat equally and the singer's voice was clear as well, as if we were in the same room.
I'd like to recreate this with my iPod Classic but I've noticed the EQ isn't customizable (unless I'm missing something) and that with some of the iPod's EQ settings I can hear instruments clearly but the vocals sound muffled, almost like they're dubbed from another source. But there's other settings (Vocal) where the singer comes in clear but the instruments are muffled in that dubbed way. I've tried Flat and Off but results with those vary.
My old player's EQ was set at a reverse of the iPod's Rock setting, lowest bars on the outside and highest in the middle. Is it possible to load an EQ setting like that from iTunes? If you can download a game, can you download an EQ setting?
AND is there a certain volume level where that 'same room' clarity shines through? Anything lower than 11 out of 20 on my old player and it would lose that clarity (anything higher than 13/20 was too loud). 12 was just right. If that makes any sense.
Or could it have something to do with how a song is ripped from a CD? Which is what my music collection started out as.
I'm hoping someone can help and shed some light on this for me. I got it engraved so I can't exactly return it. haha
    tangcameo

Most audiophiles, switch off the iPod Classic EQ as it is crap, most probably designed by some team who like bubble-gum music. but if you must use, create a custom EQ presets
    read this forum

But try not to boost up greater than zero db, the new iPod audio chipset don't like it, your music will sound like something from some Oriental Opera, of course, unless you like the metallic tin highs.

  • Xserve G5 unexpectedly shut down

    Hi there,
We are still using an old Apple Xserve G5 for minor backup jobs. So far the Xserve is running very reliable. A year ago the Xserve unexpectedly
shut down for numerous times. As I found out the guys from the colocation connected the Xserve with a wrong port on their power reset system. So, as
soon as another colocation client initiated a power reset, a shutdown was forced on my Xserve.
Problem: A couple of days ago this kind of behavior reoccurred. My remote card showed me no display signal. So the Xserve has been completely
shutdown. The system.log doesn't show me any useful entries like localhost kernel[0]: ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown. There are no entries before the system startup logfile entries. This time the server is attached to correct power supply unit and the power supply is working normally.
Unfortunately my ISP says that there were no maintenance on the colocationrack or any kind of power outage during this timeframe.  I am still not sure
    about that…
Anyone have seen this error on those old Xserve models?
    Thanks

3 times in last few days, while digitizing HDV
    footage in FCP 5.1via FWire400 - the g5 has
unexpectedly SHUT DOWN. There's no Kernal Panic
warning - the system just flat shuts off as if the
    power was pulled.
Have you tried copying the footage to the external SATA hard drives instead? I have had all sorts of problems with FireWire enclosures no longer working properly. If it works with the SATA setup you will know its probably the FW drive or its enclosure.
The process of elimination goes on,

     I have HP Pavilion dv6-6120ee laptop ..
ac adapter suddenly stopped working and make electricity of the flat cutting off and when I tried it again it's not working
after few days I noticed that "HP Laptop Power Cord Safety Recall and Replacement" I make an order and yes the problem
was found because of the ls-15 cable that provided .. so as it is appeared its manufacturing mistake and I got hurt cuz of
this mistake .. I don't know what is damaged now the ac adapter or the ls-15 cable but anyway if the ac adapter is
damaged what will i do with the replacement cable I think it will be useless ... so as we see it was manufacturing mistake
and not the user mistake please provide me a fair answer !

  • MBPr display backlight not working

I opened my mid 2012 15" MBPr this morning and the screen was black. Upon further investigation, I realized that with a flashlight I could see the screen, it was just as if my brightness was set to zero. adjusting the setting does nothing. I've done an PRAM and SMC reset to no avail. The computer works fine otherwise and when connecting throught HDMI to an external display everything works. This tells me its not a GPU issue.
    Any thoughts?

The Genius Bar tech attempted to reseat the display connection but had no results. It was determined the display would new to be replaced for a $310 flat rate off site repair. This was much better than expected because an in house screen replacement on the retina can cost upwards of 700 dollars (I've have it done through warranty due to a dead pixel when I first received the computer)

  • Someone help please, major issues 10.5.2 power

Alright, this all started with 10.5.2, and I've already been to the apple store once. 10.5.1 was running pretty good.. had a few problems but nothing major.. upgraded to 10.5.2, and issues have slowly escalated.
    Issues.
    1. wouldn't boot with my cinema display plugged in for the first week after I upgraded. even after reseting pram. then all the sudden it began working properly.
    2. the green light on my charger cord lights up at about 1/10th it's usual brightness.
    3. my battery, that had 14 cycles, and was only 7 months old, went from having 95-96% health before I upgraded to 10.5.2, to 60% health a week later. (so low in fact that apple kindly replaced it with a new one at the apple store, he even agreed that it was incredibly low for the cycle count. but unfortunately I believe the problem lies elsewhere).
    4. I noticed there was something wrong with the battery because when I was running off of it, it would run down to about 48% and just flat turn off with no warning, actually causing a loss in a couple files. I haven't tested this with the new battery yet as I'd like to do some research (this) first, and frankly try to figure out what else could be going on.
    5. this is another major one, I can't put my computer to sleep because, sometimes it doesn't wake up, and when it wakes up(75% of the time) my external HD fails to work.. what I mean here is that it continually kicks over trying to spin up... and then it says I removed the drive without ejecting it when I didn't.. I know you're thinking this could be unrelated, and hard drives die all the time.. but I assure you this HD is in perfect working order, even according to techtool pro 4. it's only 6 months old, and when I turn it off, unplug it's power and re attach it again, it starts up fine and works again, it's the sleep that's messing it up.
So, that's my main concern, I have 700+ gigs of really important info on my external and I'm afraid it could just get fried somehow.. I can't afford a new external.. has anyone ever heard of these things before? as for specifics, this is a santa rosa macbook pro 2.4 ghz, 2 gigs of ram, a 30 inch cinema display, and a dual bay external hd.
    thanks

Did you show this to the people at the Apple Store? This sounds like a hardware problem and appears unrelated to any external hard drive.

This sounds like it could be caused by #2.
Take it back in to the store and try it with a different power brick. I think that might be the problem.

  • Education price....

Very general question about the education price offered by appl , I am told that it is specific to certain serial # in macbook pros....some are available for educ price and others are for the general public.is this right???? I thought you could get the same comp either way .
    Thanks
    RayS

    Not entirely the case.
    1. Apple stores offer stock models, giving the discount.
    2. Apple.com offers custom builds, giving the discount.
    3. Private retailers cannot access Education stock prices - that's Apple's baby; once a cash-cow for Authorized retailers.
    4. Apple Education is a separate entity, offering lower config'd models to institutions offering a greater discount than available to a student.
    5. Possibly with the exception of an Apple store, Education models are serialized differently than retail. This is evident when you call customer support and are asked to call back at a different toll-free number. Often an Ed. serial number won't be in the retail support database.
To date, Apple hasn't been to interested in verifying Education eligibility - anybody can get the discount at Apple.com. I just hope people are honest and don't abuse the discount for those who are eligible.
Apple's Ed discount has thinned over the past few years. At at time it was a flat 10% off, now its 5-7%. Note the absence of an Ed price for iPods... gone as of fall '06.
My overall feeling is that Apple can't wait to get rid of the hardware discount. They are replacing good back-to-school discounts and bundles with free, end of the line, iPod nanos. Software will always be where the value is - for Pro Apps. But, even FCP has gone from $500 to $900; Logic Pro the same...
my 2¢. hopefully this provides insight for some.

  • Sound output has more bass than old model

    Hello
I've just purchased a new MAC PRO. I've noticed that the sound in the headphones has a lot more bass presence than the old model.
    Anyone else found this
In iTunes, eq is Flat or off. I can't find anything else that would changed the sound quality
    Thanks

"- 16-bit, 44.1Khz - the sound was not quite as "wide" as the 24 bit files, but the kick drum, bass guitar, and even the snare sounded markedly more full and punchy. The bass line could be heard un-interrupted pulsing at the bottom."
The "wide" is perfectly understandable since our perception of depth and width relies a lot on low-level ambient cues that could easily be lost in a 16-bit system vs a 24-bit system.
The other part is harder...just another man's theory here, but if we were to take this to extremes...say a 3-bit system: off, soft and loud.
It would be true then that anything over a certain input level threshhold would be assigned as a "loud" bit. Could that make certain characteristics and sounds appear more "punchy"? Obviously, there are 2 to the 16th power levels of resolution in a 16-bit byte, but I'm just wondering if this concept could affect the perception more so than with a 24-bit system.
Another factor to consider is that 12-bit systems would generally have more distortion in the analog section than a high-end 24-bit converter. Distortion can definitely affect the perception of both loudness and 'punchiness'. Remember, the signal goes through analog circuits before it hits the converter chip. That analog portion is pretty critical to how the system sounds.
That's why two a/d converters can use the same converter chips and even the same clocks, but still sound different.

This phone won't hold it's charge. It has been restored, setup as a new phone but not activated and then turned off and yet the battery still dies. When it is setup it wouldn't last a day either that is why I tried the restore and set it up as a new phone. I want to sell it but I can't while it is behaving the way it is. It has a new battery so it isn't the battery. Just don't know why it is doing it when as I said it has been reset to a new phone but left at the 'hello' screen and turned off and it still goes flat.

There is probably a short somewhere or there could be a bad chip on the logic board.
