Equalizing Live Recording in FCP

Hello,
I am seeking any advice about equalizing sound using the graphic equalizer in FCP 5.1, after recording a friends Jug band (acoustic & homemade instruments) at a bandshell outdoor live recording with a single wireless Sennheizer cardiod microphone gaffer taped to the center floor on small stand pointing up. I videotaped it with my Panasonic DVX 100A on both channels and had to fairly boost the gain but got an o.k. level most of the time.
As you can tell this is not intended to be a professional piece for my friends, but the vocals and the instruments are pretty much competing as you might guess. They use guitars, acoustic kettle bass, drums; cymbals, jugs, harmonicas, ukuleles and they harmonize (vocals) often. Kind of R. Crumb material. I have tried this so far:
Rolled back 60-100Hz (2-3db)
Boosted a little 125-250 (2-3db)
315Hz (+1db)
Roll back in a curve 600-1000 (1-3db)
Keeping curve
Boosting at 2K to 4K (2-3db)
5K (+2db)
6K (+1db)
Flattening out at 8K
If anyone else has any comments about what you might have found helpful please let me know. I have worked with sound for a while but any helpful experience and advice would be great thanks. I just want it to sound good for my friends... thanks
peace

hey there alchemy,
there's not much you can do, as it seems you started w/ poor mic placement. is this the same curve on both audio channels? if so, try a different curve on one that accentuates the vocal range between 2K-5K, depends on voices-some may be lower, some may be higher- you'll have to play w/ it, that's just a general range for voice & reduce it on the other, then pan one channel more to the right, the other more to the left, also raise the overall level of the audo channel w/ the vocals accentuated/reduce the instrument track. don't have much else in the way of suggestions.
i've done live sound & recording for about 28 years & for the next time get your mic closer to their mouths, if they're all singing into one mic-like what is done w/ traditional bluegrass music, attach/tape yours to that stand if possible, put yours on a floor stand near that one if possible, off the stage in front of them(if the stage isn't too high) or put it on a stand closer to the SR(sound re-inforcement) speaker, but not so close as to blow it's capsule/diaphragm or even ask the audio person if you can get a feed from the board. i've made some quality recordings w/ a stereo pair-for that i like Audio Technica AT-822 or 825 stereo mic, if you have more $$ the Shure VP88. like lighting you may need a variety of tools to get the job done-i have a mic locker that includes a $30.00 Radio Shack stereo mic(no longer made) that does a decent job for the occasional theater shows i shoot for myself/friends w/ my consumer miniDV, but i also have some more expensive $500.00 LDC mics, a range of dynamic/vocal mics & SDC mics as well as a variety of recorders & mixers. check out Shure, AKG & AT websites as they offer info about mics & placement, w/ a slant toward their own gear of course.
good luck, hope this helps.

  • How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
    Scott

    Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
    HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
    Good luck!

  • I am considering buying a new MAC laptop to run LOGIC for composition and band live/recording, but which one is best as I do not want to spend too much money? Does it have a line in and how do you monitor sound? Will I need adaptors and a interface?

I am considering buying a new MAC laptop to run LOGIC for composition and band live/recording, but which one is best as I do not want to spend too much money?
Does it have a line in and how do you monitor sound?
Will I need adaptors and an interface?
Also, I am guessing as Logic only runs on MAC surely then they would not the best spec to recommend to run it?
I see all the upgrades as additional memory or a faster process?
Is a retina screen necessary, and why flash based storage against a 1TB hard drive, and a i5 instead of an i7
The main reason for this purchase is to play live and use backing tracks and record found sounds and make creative songs.
I hope you can provide some valuable feedback, as I am a longtime MAC user and see upgrades and changes happen regularly but the most important thing is the songs not the equipment.
I have £500 already and willing to add another 500 to 700 pounds, then software extra.

  • Why is "live recording" showing under TV shows?

I just noticed that on my Apple TV, under TV Shows, there's a new listing, "Live Recording". It just showed up today; it was never there before. In my computer, there is no "Live Recording" under TV Shows. It appears that this is something Apple has thrown upon us without not even an explanation of what it is or what what it's supposed to do. Does anyone know what this is? Thank you.

You haven't got an EyeTv that's automatically added a recording to TV shows have you with a cryptic name?
It may be something new in itunes 8 but I've not upgraded yet.

  • HT204406 I recently uploaded a live recording to match. Plays when I listen in "recently added" playlist, but will not play in a new playlist "ineligible" cloud symbol appears

I recently uploaded a live recording to match and it appears (and plays) under "recently added" on the left menu. When I create a new playlist for this music it won't play and has the "ineligible" cloud symbol with slash through it. It must be in the cloud as it's playing now, but the content will not play if moved from "recently added" into a playlist. I'm puzzled. Any help?
    Bit rate is 192 kbps
    it is an mpeg file
    Thanks in advance!

I just went back and used Tunesify to convert from mp3 to aac format and it's working now. I've added over 20K to my match library and this is the 1st time something like thas has happened.

    Hi All,
I've configured Live Recording and its working perfectly.
However, when you press the LiveRcd button, you briefly get a message "Live Record has Stopped". (It does record the conversation and delivers it to my mailbox).
    Is this normal?

says " Live Record has stopped" which is mis-leading to the users as
they feel the call is not recording but it actually is recording and

  • Live Record issue on Unity Connection 8.5

We have the CoS for Live Record set to a maximum message length of 3600 seconds but our recordings are cutting off at 20 minutes exactly.  We are using a single inbox solution with Exchange 2010 and there are no mailbox size limits on the users. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Under Cisco Unity Connection Administration webpage Under System Settings >> Advanced >> Telephony >> Maximum Recording Time in Milliseconds; check if this value is 1200000 (20 minutes); if yes then change this to 3,600,000 milliseconds (1 hour).

  • URGENT! Missing audio files from a live recording due to Logic crash

    Hi,
yesterday, in the middle of a (low budget) live recording, Logic gave me an error message saying "disk too slow" and stopped recording.
I was using the internal drive. I know this is not a proper habit, but I would have never thought that Logic could complain about the drive slowness with 2 tracks/24bit/44,1khz. Instinctively I pressed * at once but this caused the sequencer to start recording back from bar 1, making the previous 27 minutes of recording disappear, even from the audio files directory.
Is there anything I can do to recover the two AIFF files and avoid lots of swearwords from the customer?

    Thanks for the sympathy musicspirit...
About Logic crashing... Actually, Logic didn't "crash", that is, the application didn't quit. It only stopped recording, displaying that "disk too slow". If truth be told, the timeline remained red, it stopped recording the two tracks. Then I pushed the "record" key and it started recording back from bar 1. As soon as I realised that it wasn't displaying the previous 27 minutes of recording anymore, I stopped the transport and something even more strange happened... Logic rendered the overview of the newly recorded two audio regions and started prompting error messages about one of them being an 8-bit audio file. Moreover, I had the Roger Nichols Inspector plugin open and in the meantime it went crazy too, displaying "9999" in the clips/consecutive clips/etc. counter.
I was listening with my headphones plugged into my Fireface and I can tell you that the audio coming from the soundcard was perfect during the Logic "crash". It never stopped, clipped, popped or anything similar.
About the audio path, audio file name... I always double check the audio recording path before starting a recording and it was exactly where it should be.
After the crash I recorded the second part of the gig on an external FW hard drive and everything went smooth. I simply can't find the audio files of the first 27 minutes anywhere on the drive. However I found out pieces of them with Data Rescue II among deleted files, but they are corrupted (interrupted by pink noise and square waves - BTW I plan to save one of them labelling it with "how an audio file dies").
It is really strange that such a powerful program (as Logic is) doesn't save an audio file if for some reasons it stops recording and you press record again...

  • Audition Marker Points: Can a Midi/USB trigger be set up  to place "Markers" on to the timeline during a live recording?

Audition Marker Points: Can a Midi/USB trigger be set up  to place "Markers" on to the timeline during a live recording?

Or you can find a suitable controller such as the original Red Rover or something that supports Mackie control protocol.
Some years ago I built a simple remote controller by buying a cheap USB keyboard and throwing away the keys just keeping the controller chip with it's USB connection. To this I added my own bank of a few push buttons. The most complicated bit of the process was working out the key matrix to trigger the required keyboard ascii commands.

  • How enable live record automatically

Which plugin is used for those streams?
Your More system details list shows the WMP plugin and the Flash plugin as commonly used plugins to play streams.

  • Splitting live  recording is separate sessions

    Hi,
I have a 16 track live recording as a single session. Now I have to split the session in a separate session for each song. I would like to select the song and create a new session as a copy of the original one. I have tried, but I see no easy way of doing this. In the multitrack editor there is no option to save selected audio to new files/sessios. There is in de waveform editor but not for all 16 channels. Does anyone know a way to do this? I am new to Audition, so maybe I missed some obvious way of doing this. If so, sorry.
    Thnx Erik jan

Now I'll be the first to admit that I haven't tried this in the latest release, but it should still work fine. I posted it originally on the AudioMasters forum, but I don't mind repeating it here.
Anyway, I think that the most space-effective way of doing this is to highlight the time section you want (ie, each song), and make sure that all 16 tracks are selected along it. You then split all of the highlighted tracks, which the 'split' command will do vertically to all of the selected tracks, and drag this split section to the next 16 tracks down, using the right mouse button, and using the 'create unique copy' option when you paste them. You save these shortened tracks, and repeat the operation for as many new songs as you need to. Oh, and you have to have the correct cursor selected for this to work easily as well...
The advantage of doing it this way is that you have time-aligned tracks to mix in a new session, you haven't wasted loads of loading time because you didn't have to open the entire file just to mix down one bit of it (which is what any of the 'deleting' option some people suggest do), and once you get the hang of it, it's dead easy.
What you can do then is create a separate session for each individual song from the split unique copies.

  • Seek option for Live Recording Video?

High defenition video is getting recorded using Flash application and Flash Media server, there is another flash application to view the recording Stream (Live View).
I wonder, is it possible to seek a particular position using the seek function in the viewer application ?
i mean, is it possible to seek to a particular position when playing a live recording video ?
Any input on this will really help me a lot.

you can seek based on time so if the time sought has already been recorded, the seek should work.

  • Live recording and adding latency

Hi all. I'm wondering if anyone has any insight and bright ideas.
I've set up a live in-place auditorium video recording system, which right now has the following paths:
Mixer --> Beachtek adapter --> remote HDV camera --> Mac
So, the audio is good quality, sent by balanced cables to the camera, and the complete audio/video is sent to the computer by firewire. The camera never actually uses a tape. This works pretty well, but relies on the camera's ADC. I can hear a little difference between the mixer sound and the sound coming back by firewire. Ideally, I could send the audio into the Mac's optical port instead. But, DV/HDV have a latency of about .8 seconds, making the audio and video out of sync.
So, any way of adding latency to the audio, rather than fixing it in post? Students may have to run this system.
    Thanks.
    Jeremy

Hi David. When I am capturing live (recording to disc) from a camera, the image on the cam lags real life by a little bit, about .8 seconds. For instance, turning the camera will result in the preview moving a little later.
If you get to Cookeville at all, you can check out the installation.
    Jeremy
PS To clarify, I am talking about recording video via firewire and audio via something else, such as optical in or a USB sound interface.
