Equalizing volume on burned CDs - Follow-up

This is a follow-up to an earlier thread:

I never did have that much luck with Dragon Burn, as it was a bit of a pain to use. But, I recently upgraded my Roxio Toast to version 8, which now includes many (all?) of the track adjustment features of Jam as part of the package.
I was able to easily use my already created Playlists from iTunes, to create a CD in Toast (in a Browse window), and then was easily able to increase the GAIN on softer tracks right in the main window (with a helpful little "VU" meter), prior to the BURN. If you want to get fancy and play engineer you can also add EQ and other effects to individual tracks, and create cross fades.
So, for me, this has been the best solution so far to mixing older and newer CDs on the the same mix disc. At least until iTunes improves "Soundcheck" for burning.
You may still have to use the Burn-and-reimport procedure for purchased music, described in the earlier thread, since I don't think Toast will burn protected files either. My tests so far have not included any purchased tracks.

When I attempt to log on to I tunes I get the following message:
"The registry settings used by the I Tunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.
This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please re-install I Tunes."
To my knowledge no new software has been installed.  I have tried un-installing and re-installing I Tunes but I still
    get the same message.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?  Do I need to download a new driver?
    Bill Martin

I can get down as far as step 11 but it shows nothing about upper filters and when I type on "If the Upper Filters entry is missing follow these instructions" nothing happens
Do you mean you can't see the instructions on what to do if there is no UpperFilters entry?
If so, here's the relevant instructions for that step:
On the right side of the Registry Editor window, right-click the UpperFilters entry and choose Modify from the shortcut menu.
Right-click the empty white space within the right-hand portion of the Registry Editor window. From the shortcut menu, choose New > Multi-String Value.
Name this new value "UpperFilters" (without the quotes). Then, right-click the newly created UpperFilters entry and choose Modify from the shortcut menu.

    Any clues??
    Thank you.

When connecting to Itunes, it shows the following error: registry settings used by itunes drivers for importing and burning cds are missing.
I have edited the registery, downloaded the Gear drivers, uninstalled and installed itunes, and the error still appears.
What else can I do.  Cannot connect any of our iphones or ipods to itunes because of this error.

    I have edited the registery,
We'd better have a closer look at the keys to see what's going on.
Can you post a screenshot of the contents of the key you've been editing, please? Include all of the regedit screen, including the left-hand column. Save the screenshot to an image file, and insert the image file in a reply by clicking the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window.

  • Volume control while burning CDs

When I burn CDs from itunes there are songs with different natural volumes. I've tried checking and unchecking the "use sound check" option in edit/preferences/advanced/burning, but the volumes of different songs are still different after burning to a CD. Does anyone know how to set all volumes to the same level on the CD?

Sound Check for burning does not work as advertised, and has not ever done so thru all the releases that I have used. You can try manually adjusting the volume of the individual wayward tracks, via Get Info > Options > Volume Adjustment.

  • Playback volume problems on burned CDs

When I burn CD's from playlists on my iBook and play them on a home CD player (not iPod), the song playback volumes vary greatly from song to song. Some are very loud and some very soft. Is there any way to control this problem so all songs are about the same volume? The sound check option and going to "file/get info/changing volumes" on individual songs does not help.

The Sound Check option (Playback) and changing the volumes in 'Get info' does not adjust the volume when burning.
Ticking the checkbox 'Use Sound Check' in 'Preferences>Advanced>Burning' (for Audio CD only) might do the trick, but I don't find it satisfactory for me.
You can adjust the volume (gain) for each individual track by using the 'Normalize' function in various audio editors (Audacity, Sound Studio etc.).
This is a lengthy procedure, but it can be a solution when only a few tracks need adjusting. The tracks are permanently altered, unless you save it as a copy.
Maybe there are similar programs, but what really does a good job for me, is 'Jam' (roxio.com). You can select all or selected tracks to 'normalize' them.
Adjusting gain for each track individually is also possible, if some songs need to be louder or softer.
The adjustments will not alter the tracks, but are saved in a separate file.

Finding this Post took some time but I thought it was me talking when I read it. I was having the exact same issue. I have a G3 I've been upgrading like mad, including a Sonnet G4-500 CPU a Maxtor 60gb & 80gb HDs 1gb of RAM a new LaCie Firewire800 PCI card Graphics card etc. the latest was installing Panther 10.3.9 on the new 80gb HD and also swapping out the old CD-ROM and replacing with the (Apple standard) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-110D combo drive in it's place. got everything up and booted and poof! no burning. Toast worked read/write no problem. iTunes could read and import no problem, but wouldn't burn a CD.
Downloaded "PatchBurn 3.1.3" installed, re-booted and all is OK in burner land again :>)
I wanted to just post my additional thanks to the lead to Patchburner, and I'm going to donate to the cause. It's worth a $20 donation just for my joy of not throwing this computer out the window!!

Try updating your drives firmware. Click 'Firware Updates' on the right hand side of this page, then follow the instructions and download the update, then install. See if that helps. Its worth updating the firmware anyway :P

  • IPod will not sync, and will not burn cds...

1.) When I connect my iPod to the comp the syncing process starts. The little wheel my my ipod's name starts spinning, then slows down, then freezes and itunes stops responding. I have to hit crtaltdel to manually shut down itunes. Then, I have to click on the little icon in the lower right hand corner that says "Safely Remove Hardware" to disconnect my ipod w/o messing it up. Fortunately, my ipod is okay, but I have not been able to update it since the beginning of May.
I have recently downloaded the latest 2 versions of itunes and the latest Gear program.
After I had problems, someone suggested downgrading to a lower version of iTnes. When I tried to downgrade to a lower version my comp would not let me do it. Also, I have recently installed to a new program, Alcohol 120%, and that burns dvds fine. I did install it after I had been having problems w/ itunes and my ipod.

Thank you in advance for your help!!!!!

I had a very similar problem, error 4251.  (look in your log you will see that error)  Since I finally fixed my problem, I thought I would see if I can help someone else.
What I found is that I lost burn ability in both iTunes AND Windows.  Like you did.  I did some digging and found that this wasn't hardware related at all.  In fact, this boils down to a registry key getting messed up.  (sigh) Yeah.  It causes the system to get a bad 'handle'.
OK, here's what to try.  Go to this Microsoft KB article.  Scroll down and find the *manual* instructions for Vista.  Delete the registry key that it specifies.  Reboot. Now verify that you can burn in Windows.  (If you have a RW disc, do a disc erase, or just try and burn from Windows Media Player.)  If that is working now,  you're on the right track.
Now the issue is that iTunes will still be broken.  Go and install the latest Gear driver.  (I know you may have done it, but do it again.)  Now follow the intructions in this Apple KB article to verify the "GEARAspiWDM" info is back there in the registry.  Now reboot.  Try and burn in iTunes.
    I hope this helps.

  • HELP! I updated my software and can no longer burn cds using iTunes

I followed all of the troubleshooting steps for not being able to burn a cd. I was able to burn cds with other cd burning programs installed on my pc, but itunes was the only program that would not burn the cd correctly. itunes would go through the entire process of burning: check media, check playlist, burn cd, finish burning cd. itunes would even ask me if I wanted to import the new cd into my playlist after it finished "burning" my cd but there was never anything on the cd. I also tried playing the cd using other programs and in other equipment but it never worked. I updated my software recently and I thought I could try to go back to an older version because I never had this problem before. However, when I uninstalled the newer version and tried to reinstall an older version of itunes, the older version of itunes refused to open because my music library was apparently created by the newer version of itunes. I don't know what to do to be able to burn cds again. At this point, I would much rather use another cd burning program but itunes is the only program that will burn the songs that I've purchased from itunes onto a cd.

Notes usually sync with a mail service i.e gmail, yahoo, aol, etc. Do you have a mail account setup on your product? If so, have you went into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Select your mail account > see if notes are toggled on
