Equations in InDesign

I have a document which needs to have (non-simple) engineering equations inserted. This is the third booklet in a series, the first 2 docs were created in InDesign but did not have much technical jargon.  I would rather not put this document into Word, so I have downloaded the equation editor "MathType" in the hope that the equations could be done from within InDesign.  The MathType 'creaters' say it is compatible with InDesign. However, as far as I can tell, the only way I can get an equation into InDesign, is by copy & paste which means it goes in as a figure/object. Well, this is fine, except uniform re-sizing through the document might be a problem, as well as the fact that the equation does not seem to be editable, and it seems that the equation would need to be re-created, if there are any changes to it.
My question is, is it possible to put editable (complex) equations directly into InDesign Documents? - perhaps even by some other equation plug-in?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For one-off equations most people use MathType (and live with external editing), but yes: there are a couple of commercial plugins that add editable equations to InDesign. InMath (http://www.itip-gmbh.eu/en/products/inmath/) and MathMagic (http://www.mathmagic.com/product/pro.html) are probably the best known.
A thorough discussion on MathType and a few plugins can be found at http://objectmix.com/adobe-indesign/225551-indesign-equations.html

  • Align MathType equations in InDesign

    Hello
    Anyone know how to align mathtype equations in InDesign CS 4 automatic? I read many discussions topics here about scripts that apply equations and align, but I want to know if there are one way to use any script just to align the equations automatic in InDesign for MAC OS, there are any script that can do just that for Mac?
    Thanks
    Jonas!

    Hello,
    If you work on PC, I think I can help you by my system of scripts (MT-Script).
    You can read more about it on my site (http://mtscript.ru) or in Scribd publication (http://www.scribd.com/doc/73272275/MT-Script-or-How-to-Work-With-MathType-Equations-in-InD esign).
    So, what you can do with my scripts? I think... all you need to prepare your publication very and very quickly.
    For example,
    you can paste equations from Word into InDesign (you can work traditionally via exporting equations to Eqn00010.eps... and placing these equations into InDesign publication instead of texts with tags like this <<Eqn00010.eps>> ... but I'm just ready to suppose you new and very simple technick ... simply paste all doc-file WITH equations (like MathType objects) into InDesign and process it by MT-UnembedEqn script ... and that's all);
    you can edit equations directly in InDesign as native objects;
    you can create new equation in InDesign without Word;
    you can format all or some equations at a moment directly in InDesign;
    you can find and change in equations;
    you can export InDesign publication to RTF with editable MathType equations. Yes! You can do it... It's very simple... one click procedure. The forward and backward conversion Word-InDesign have been perfectly created in MT-Script;
    you can test it as full functional system from the second part of Friday till the end of Monday every week;
    you can ask me about MT-Script (MathType+InDesign problems as well) just now --> [email protected]
    I'm very pleased to help you with MathType equations in InDesign.
    BUT if it's usefull for you I can create a limited version for Mac which can paste, adjust equations and exporting InDesign publication to RTF with editable equations.
    The functionality to create new equations and edit them in InDesign will be restricted because of I don't work with Mac and can't create a "bridge" program to start MathType directly from my scripts on Mac. Sorry.
    Thank you.

  • How to handle TeX/LaTeX equations in InDesign?

    Hi All,
    I've recd. a request to handle one of the title already done in LaTeX software in InDesign, for this I need to do the below tasks:
    (1) Need to convert the LaTeX data to load in InDesign
    (2) Need to convert the equations done with LaTeX coding as equation objects in InDesign
    (3) Need to retain the LaTeX links to work in InDesign, so that while generating the PDF, these links should be worked
    So pl. give me your suggestions to handle the above mentioned tasks. I know I can use the third-party tool called 'MathMagic' to handle point 2 (but this tool seems expensive), but I need to know whether any other easy methods to handle. I'm using InDesign - CS3 (Windows)
    Thanks,
    Praveen

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for the response.
    For points 1 and 3, I decided to convert the LaTeX contents to XML to fix the linking using automation thro' JS. For point 2, I'm still studying to find a solution and since this is the first time we've recd. this request, we're not ready to invest for one title.
    Thanks again,
    Praveen

  • Epubs and equations in InDesign

    In ID CS6, is there a way type/insert/import equations so that they will be maintained upon epub conversion?
    I have some experience with InDesign, but minimal with equations so as much detail as possible would be great!

    I think you have have to rasterize them using Object > Object Export Options. Choose a resolution compatible with the  device you expect them to be viewed on. I'd probably choose 300 ppi to be safe.

  • Batch import of eps equations into indesign

    Hi, I am Thangaraj Mohan, working as an layout artist. Now I am working on a Math book which has tones of equations in it. The whole text keyed in MS word, and the equations are typed inside using mathtype. I exported all equations using mathtype, mathtype exports all equations and replaces with its file name (ie. <<equ001>>) in MS word.
    Now my problem is to how place these equations inside the InDesign document. Please help me with your ideas to import all eps files into InDesign as Batch import.
    Thanks a lot.

    hi
    you don't need to export Equations as EPS file s- you can jest Copy and Paste or Place your document - all Equations will be imported as embeded graphics - with bad preview - but with Vector contents so they will print fine
    if you really need to reimport EPS files - then you need macro to surround Equations with tags which then can be used by script to place EPS files
    from:
    9.1 a) ###  b) ###  c) ###  d) ###
    to:
    9.1 a) <EQ1<###>EQ1>  b) <EQ2<###>EQ2>  c) <EQ3<###>EQ3>  d)  <EQ4<###>EQ4>
    but this will require that you will have only equations - no other images - or you will need to renumber-rename files

  • Equations Hidden in Indesign

    Hello, does anyone have a solution for hidden  Equations in Indesign, The Equations links not missing in indesign file, but i got big problem in that these equations not viewed in particular page.

    Hi rob,
    Yes, I can select the Eqn464.eps links panel, after few mins if i changing anythings in the frame or export pdf it will be hidden again. Can anyone say what i'm done wrongly?

  • Importing Microsoft Word doc to InDesign with embedded EPS art ~ scaling issue

    Hi, my workflow calls for creating content in Microsoft Word 2010 with embedded EPS art, in this case MathType 6.7a math objects. When I import these manuscripts (after saving as Word 97/2003 format) into my Adobe InDesign CS5.5 templates, the embedded inline graphics have been resized. Strangely, InDesign is keeping the container frame at the correct dimensions and then upsizing or downsizing the art inside that box.
    When I export a sample graphic from the Word file and unembed the same graphic after import it into InDesign, the two graphics are different sizes. InDesign might increase the size of one embedded graphic by 400% and then scale it down to 25% inside the anchored picture box and then in the next anchored picture box it might decrease the size the art to 50% and scale it to 200%.
    I did a test and created a graphic in Adobe Illustrator, saved it as EPS, placed the graphic into a Microsoft Word 2010 document, saved it out to 97/2003 format, imported that doc into an empty Adobe InDesign CS5.5 file. Again! InDesign changed the size of the art and re-scaled it to appear the same.
    I've been able to duplicate this issue on InDesign CS4 also, on both Windows XP and Windows 7.
    Has anyone else run into this issue? Does anyone know why the InDesign import filter doesn't import inline art in a Word document at 100%? Thanks for the help!

    My solution for this is:
    1. Place *.docx (yes, docx) word document with mathtype equations into indesign. This will set correct baseline for equations which is very important.
    2. download this scalegraphics script http://in-tools.com/downloads/indesign/scripts/ScaleGraphics.zip
    3. copy script from zip folder to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Scripts\Scripts Panel\Samples\JavaScript
    4. open palet (window/autoamtion/scripts) scripts, find new sript and run it
    Voila, all equations is at 100%...
    Script explanation: http://in-tools.com/article/scripts-blog/scale-graphics-script/
    In links palete equations have eps extension but this is embeded wmf files so you cant open them in photoshop or distill it with distiller.-((( I use export to pdf option in indesign to make pdf file.
    If you want all this eps links to export from indesign use this method:
    1. in links palete select all links
    2. in palete menu choose "unembed link"
    3. on answer window choose "no"
    4. select folder where you want indesign save files
    5. press "select"
    6.  now you have all links in new folder unembed from indesign document and you can edit it with mathtype.

  • Typing equations

    How can I type equations in inDesign?

    What type of equations?
    For example, 1x2 is an equation.
    Not being smart. But there are simplistic ways to write equations like
             1
              2
    Can be done quite easily in InDesign.
    Or 1/2 as a fraction.

  • Indesign CS3 with Powermath handling

    Hi All,
    I am opening a new topic reg. Indesign CS3 with Powermath Handling.
    Our customer is very specific they want in Indesign CS3 and Powermath for Math handling.
    We are automating a process of handling powermath equations in Indesign, since powermath has ASCII import and Export option.
    We have created a .tbl file which will convert all the mathtype equations to powermath coding automatically, then we flow it in template and just select the text part and we call the powermath import option to convert all the equation in the document to actual, this process is success and its going smooth.
    Now. The actual problem starts------------
    Client needed XML deliverable, all the powermath equations they wanted TeX coding for XML deliverable.
    So I thought that I will put this in this forum to get suggestion reg. this, all the equation and done in powermath with Indesign CS3,
    We can export all the equation back to powermath ASCII, but how do I convert the powermath to TeX.
    kavya

    Hi Kavya,
    "We have created a .tbl file which will convert all the mathtype equations to powermath coding automatically,"
    How you can created .tbl what it meant.

  • Bullets and Numbering buttons/options?

    Hi. Am in a bit of a bind, hope someone can help.
    Using InDesign CS 3.0.1 on Windows. Packaged and installed by the company I work for, so I cannot update manually (if it turns out I need to....?)
    My problem: Cannot find any options for Bullets and Numbering.
    It has just occurred to me, as I type this, that "InDesign 3.0.1" might not equate to "InDesign CS3" ? This is potentially very confusing! Do I have a version of InDesign here that doesn't have Bullet/Numbering buttons in the Paragraph Control Toolbar?
    If these buttons should exist, I'd like to know why I don't have them. I have tried restoring prefs etc. to defaults but they're still not appearing.
    Interestingly a search in the Help doesn't yield any answers, so I'm thinking I may have a version which doesn't have this feature?!?
    Could someone confirm/deny, and let me know what version I need if it's the case that I have a previous version.
    EDIT: Seems I might share this problem?.... http://groups.google.com/group/adobe.indesign.windows/browse_thread/thread/b27d031aa08292 6f
    If so, I guess I need to find out how I can get the plugins installed by the company???
    Thanks in advance.

  • Edit JS Script CS4 (Add XML Tags All pages automatically)

    Hi, all Scripter
    I have a javascript for add xml tags (ETMV2 Pearson, InDesign CS4).  We have select my powermath equation data then run script. Script automatically insert xml tags both side (open/close). But we select one by one then run script its time taking.
    var d=app.activeDocument,
    root=d.xmlElements[0],
    ie = root.xmlElements.add("inlineequation", app.selection[0]),
    im = root.xmlElements.add("inlinemediaobject", ie.texts[0]),
    to = root.xmlElements.add("textobject", im.texts[0]);
    to.xmlAttributes.add("role", "xpressmath");
    Example 1: My powermath equation data (InDesign CS4)
    [&x^{2}+y *frac*{1}{2x}&]
    Select powermath equation data then run javascript below mention. Script insert xml tags.
    <inlineequation><inlinemediaobject><textobject>[&x^{2}+y *frac*{1}{2x}&]</inlineequation></inlinemediaobject></textobject>
    Its time taking and select one by one
    Result:
    My main concern is that is this possible script find open [& and close &] all poermath equation data automatically then insert (add) xml tags all pages.
    Thank/Regard

    Hi,
    John Hawkinson thank you so much your suggestion.
    I am new  this type of discusion (on this page). So i think anybody could not replay my answer. So i repost my question.
    I want insert tags in my Indesign CS4 files. Is this posible when i select my powermath equaiton then run script. Script add tags automatically before/after my equation. Please ignore IDML word.
    Yes i an comfortable with XSLT presently i working with Pearson ETMV2.
    I have one more question when i past my snapshot its appear properly but when i agin see my commant then my snapshot disappear (see small blue rectangle).
    Thank you John again i am new in this industry please guide.

  • MathML vs CS2, CS3

    Hi scripters
    Anyone give me an idea about MathML into Indesign process. Originally I am trying to create equations when I am importing XML+MathML into Indesign.
    Is this possible?
    Your comments are most welcome
    Thanks in advance
    regards
    a r u l

    (Short) You can't.
    (Long) MathML is purely a descriptive language. There are programs that can convert this into graphic equations, but InDesign is not one of them. MathML is "just" a
    i descriptive
    language -- you can draw the square root of 2 by typing in (presumably) "< sqrt >2< /sqrt >". Now how can InDesign "know" the square root character should be drawn over the 2? It can't -- it's not built in.
    The standard XML translation is: everything is either a paragraph, or a character style. Now
    i these
    two items can be translated directly into an InDesign document. Compare this to, for example, an Excel file, written out as XML. Excel can read it back in and you can do your spreadsheet calculations with it. You can import it into InDesign, but suddenly the cell text "sum(a1..a5)" appears just like that, not anymore as a sum.
    Pointing out MathML == XML is not a valid reasoning. I can think of a variety of data written in XML, that ID doesn't process 'natively'. It doesn't process them at all, period.
    (Very long) ... Although you're welcome to go and write a javascript that reads MathML commands and draws InDesign items in turn.

  • Read baseline of PICT file

    Hi,
    We are doing math project. we extract the equation using mathtype, and export the equation as PICT file format. We successfully imported the equation into indesign. But the problem is the equation not aligned properly. i check the previous threads, in eps file they are given baseline information of the file but where as in pict file format i didn't find that so i can't align the equation.
    can anyone help me how to get the baseline information from PICT file format.
    Note: Previously we used eps file but, when we import into indesign some of the symbols (greek variables varphi, mu) are missing. So we import the equation into pict file format these symbols are available in indesign.
    Thanks in Advance,
