Equium A100-147 - Clicking noises from the HDD

For a while I have had clicking noises from the HDD and when the laptop failed I assumed the drive had packed up but when trying a replacement nothing happens. I get a blue light for battery and a (faint) blue light for DC supply but nothing for power or disk. However, when I connected an external drive yesterday it booted fine and when I disconnected it the laptop continued working from the internal drive. But again this morning it is dead and cannot boot. I have read that the BIOS can stop recognising the drive or maybe the settings are not being saved when it is turned off. Could it be the motherboard battery ?

If I understand you right your notebook is death now, right?
I really don't know what to do. Remove the battery and HDD and try to start notebook. if the same happen again it is time for new notebook.
I don't think repair is best option because it can be pretty expensive. Satellite A100 is pretty old notebook and you can sell it on eBay. Someone will need it for replacement parts.
Maybe my opinion sounds stupid but I don't know if you have time to search for new parts. I cannot say for sure but there must be some serious problem when you cannot even enter BIOS settings or see anything on the screen.

  • Clicking noise from the HDD of the new Mac Mini

I just recently purchased a new Mac mini to retire the Macbook pro from my leaving room (it was heating up too much when running Plex). The problem I find is that the new Mini's HDD (toshiba 5400) has a loud clicking noise which on the MBP I can't barely notice. Is anybody else experiencing this?
I would like to understand if this is just a faulty HDD so I can exchange it or if the sound is normal and then I would just return it.
    Thanks in advance

No clicking on my 2010 aluminum model or any of the previous ones that I have had.

  • Clicking noise from the screen moving

My Phone is making a clicking noise on the right hand side of the screen, the movement of the screen cannot be seen but it can easily be felt. ive seen this as a problem before from other questions and how most cases have been sorted, however my phone has scratch marks on it, not from being dropped, just from a set of keys in my pocket! :/ will my phone still be covered by warranty to be replaced?

No one here can speak for Apple about what they will do. They'll examine it and make a decision nor do we have any idea what they will think.

  • Horrible buzzing and clicking noise from the fan - DV6 3046eo

    Hello!
Two weeks ago the fan on my DV6 3046eo laptop began to make almost continueosly buzzing and clicking noise. My laptop is less than an year old (bought in December 2010) and such noise has never occurred before. I have done some "research" to find the reason, but without luck. I have read on Internet that the fan may be broken or loose. I am just using the web and listening the music. I have to admit I played some demanding games on the computer, like BBC2 and Dirt3. But the problem occured later. I can't imagine what will happen if I play games on my laptop now...
The fan seems to cool down the laptop, but it is like something is hitting it every third second or soand preventing it from running silently. The noise is strange and irritating because the frequency changes rapidly. Sometimes when I move the laptop or hit it a bit gently, the loud noise suddenly disappears and the normal continueosly noise takes over (I am ok with the latter one, though). After some while it appears again. The noise come and go. Reboot doesn't help much. I have also used an airspray can, but to no avail. I am thinking about getting the fan replaced by HP before the 1 year warranty runs out. I am not too comfortable to do so myself. What's the reason for this noise and what should I do?
    Thanks in advance!

I am getting sick of this noise. I can't bring my laptop to school because it makes too much noise. Please help me.

  • QOSMIO X505-Q8104X INTERMITTENT BEEP AND KNOCK-KIND OF NOISE FROM THE HDD...

I purchased a Qosmio less than 2 months ago.  Today I powered it and a message appeared, something like "Battery has reached it's critical level, to proceed recharge battery or plug AC......".   Apparently when I closed The lid yesterday it didn't shut down, some program couldn't close so it ran out of battery...  I was on AC already so I proceed as normal, but then when I logged on to windows, started noticing a beep moreless every second, not from speakers, from inside the laptop(lower right hand side) along with a low volume knock, associated with what I think was The HDD activity....   I started researching for some info, tried SAFE mode, The beep-knock continued, tried the antivirus scan and only found some cookies and a possible unwanted program, The beep continued...  Whenever I rebooted, it always was stuck by The MSN messenger app, couldn't be closed, I had to force it, this wasn't The case before, sometimes it happened, but this time it was permanent(don't know if this has something to do with The problem).
After 2 hours of this, I finally was ready to head to The repair center, maybe I rebooted once again, and it stopped....   The only thing I noticed is that The battery led was red now instead of AMBER....   I didn't try to power the laptop without the battery just on AC, I didn't try to boot without The HDD and using a bootCD......  I held The laptop upside down to check The serial while it was on, just to mention some things...
Could it be a HDD problem associated with low battery levels?, or movement while it was on inside The backpack?, The HDD protection has always been on....   Was it a virus?, can a software issue cause this kind of beeping?
I really want to know what was The problem??, will it come back?, should I check it with The repair center ?, is there some diagnostic tool for The Hardware I can use?, any suggestions?, have someone experienced a similar problem?
    Please help,
    Thanks...
Additional info:  Above is mentioned the reboot problem regarding some app, specially MSN messenger preventing a clean restart... something that apparently has nothing to do with the problem...  now that the beep is gone, I tested if the restarting process was ok, or if I had the problem again, and when I tried to restart, closing the lid, again the Messenger had to be forced to close, and the beep started again, for maybe 5-10 senconds and went off again...   so I don't know if this problem has to do with this?, or the restarting-rebooting process is damaged? and has to do with this?...   Also when I restarted the beep was on for maybe 3-5 seconds in another try....   really confused....

After a long time I'm posting back on this forum and bumping the topic, sorry about that. I just wanted to announce that my problem was finally fixed (in case somebody else shared my problem).
It turned out to be the laptop's keyboard. When I went to the nearest official technical support office, they disassembled the keyboard from the laptop and we saw that there were some finger and hand smudges all over the metallic, smooth back side of the keyboard along with a stamped sticker that gave us the idea that it had been previously repaired or something similar. They told me that they'd order a replacement keyboard to try out and see if it was certainly the keyboard. I'd have to wait 10 days for the shipment, free of charge tho. I called on the 10th day, brought my Q706 and they replaced the keyboard (I'm positive they did because they left the plastic cover on, just for courtesy). The beeping sound was gone, boot up was a lot faster and there were no more pop ups in Windows prompting me to delete anything. I formatted it once again and for the last time with the automated Toshiba restore program (the one that's stored on a hidden partition) just in case and now it's working as it should have. I'm absolutely happy with my new laptop now. Still disappointed I had to go through all that hassle to have it fixed.
Hope this helps anybody that had something similar going on.

  • My MacBook Pro 13 inch makes a clicking noise from the hard drive and can not start up in safe mode and normal. I then ran disk utility in recovery mode and disk utility shows no problems with the hard drive. What is the problem?

Please help me, I have a mid 2010 Mac book pro with a toshiba mk3266gsxf harddrive. It started making a clicking noise and then my computer crashed. I proceeded to boot in safe mode, but it doesn't work. When I ran disk utility in recovery mode, it showed no problem with my disk. Does any one know what the problem is?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the drive and it ruined the sectors where the Macintosh HD partition (and OS X, and files and programs) reside, but not your Recovery HD partition.
If you held command option r while booting, that's Internet Recovery and it's loaded via the Internet, not via the Recovery HD partition on the boot drive, so that could mean the drive is dead mechanically or there is another issue.
In either case the drive will likely have to be replaced, it's a matter of what occured to where and the drive state if you can recover data or not. If you made recent backups then your fine.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

  • Question Mark  clicking noise from internal seagate HDD

this morning, my six months old MacBook black (2.16Ghz) screen froze. After force to reboot, my MacBook will not boot anymore while hearing a repeated clicking noise from the hard drive.
I tried Disk Utilities from Original Install Disk but the internal HDD is not recognized.
Then run the Apple Hardware Test, 01 Error found with these code; 4SNS/1/40000000:TB0T.
I don't know what that means.
Boot up MB from Data Rescue II boot CD, still the internal HDD cannot be found.
I know that the internal HDD is not completely dead because I still hear a repeated clicking noise from the hard drive. Is there any ways to recover data from the drive?
Someone suggested me to create "image" out of the hdd by using "dd" command under Terminal.
    Would it be possible?
    I have Apple OEM (Seagate) *ST9160821AS Momentus 5400.3 160gb.*
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I've had my share of hard drive failures, and that repeated clicking sound is a telltale sign. Yours is not the infamous Firmware 7.01 drive which were all of the Seagate Momentus 5400.2 series. Sounds like a simple random crash. Unfortunately, these things happen.
You might be able to recover it yourself. If you can't, any repeated efforts to do it yourself could reduce your chances of recovering data if there's something like a failed head.
If your data is that valuable, you might want to bring it to a data recovery service. Most will give an estimate and only charge if they can recover data. Their services will typically be very expensive - around the cost of a new MacBook.

  • Clicking noise from back-ups

Since replacing my G5 with a new mac mini I hear frequent clicking noises from the APC Back-UPS that I have it plugged into. The only obvious difference is that the mini has an ungrounded two-prong plug while the G5 had a grounded three-prong plug. The clicking noise consists of two clicks in succession, the second one slightly lower in pitch. This occurs at random intervals but also in response to anything that I'm doing on the computer such as opening or closing an application, resizing a window, visiting or exiting a website, etc. Occassionally it will happen when the computer is asleep in which case I will hear the fan running briefly in the mini although the monitor doesn't wake up. When this happens I will often see the internet activity monitor light flashing on my dsl modem. I don't know if these noises are a sign that something isn't working properly or just an annoyance. In either case I would welcome suggestions on how to stop it as well as any ideas as to what might be causing it. The APC unit provides battery back-up power in the case of a power outage and surge protection. I submitted my question to APC support but got no response. I also talked to someone at AppleCare and he had no idea what was causing this and wasn't even sure if he knew what I was asking about. However lots of people use back-ups units so someone out there must have experienced this phenomena besides me.

I checked that box but wasn't around the sleeping computer long enough to tell if it made a difference. I plugged in a lamp with a dimmer and turned it up and down with no effect. Then I had an idea. I'm going to wait a couple of days before marking this as definitely solved, but here's what happened:
The UPS has three outlets marked "controlled by master." Anything plugged into these gets it's power turned off when the computer is sleeping. I had long ago moved the peripherals to the other outlets because I didn't like having my computer and monitor wake up whenever I turned on the printer just to use the copy function. Near the power button on the UPS is another smaller button with a graphic symbol. If you hold this down for a few seconds it turns off the "master enable" function. After I did this the clicking stopped.
This still leaves some unanswered (though no longer important) questions: Why was this an issue with the mini but not with the G5? Why was I getting clicking noises in response to doing things on the computer even with the usb connection to the UPS disconnected? Why was I also getting them even when the computer was asleep? One possible factor is the usb hub. The old one was on a pci card, while the new one is external with a power cord connected to the UPS. Another factor may be the ungrounded power plug on the mini vs. the grounded one on the G5. At any rate it looks like the problem is solved, at least for now.

  • Clicking Noise from hard drive_U410

    Hi,

    HI,

    Thanks!!
The noise you are hearing might just be the normal sound of the hard drive.  Most hard drives aren't 100% quiet.    The link below is for a Seagate article on hard drive noises for your reference......
    http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/174571en?language=en_US
Are you experiencing any errors or problems with the hard drive ?  Seagate also offers a free SeaTools utility that can be used to check the health of your hard drive.  You can download that free tool at the link below.....
    http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/
As for warranty, the hard drive would be covered under your computer's warranty and that would have expired after 1 year.
As for fixing the noise, the only way to fix the noise would be to replace the hard drive with a new one.  Then again the noise you are hearing maybe just the normal sounds of the drive.
As with any hard drive it is always a good idea to have a back up of your important files on another media. Hard drives have been known to fail without notice.

  • Does my Equium A100-147 have an internal microphone?

    Hi,
I can hear others during a voice chat but no-one can hear me. I have tried using an external micrphone but nothing changed. I have gone through Control Panel and tested my microphone. A sound seems to play but I can't hear anything else.
    Please respond.
    Thanks
    Sashinath

    Hi sashinath
    Happy New Year
It seems the Equium A100-147 does not support the internal mic and therefore you have to connect the external microphone if you want to speak to everyone in the vice chat.
    You could use any microphone.
I use a skype for communicating and I have connected a headset. Its a headphone with the microphone.
After connecting of the external mic you should check the sound and audio options in the control panel and check if the mic was enabled.

  • Equium-A100-147 - broken sound and video

    Hi everyone,
I have the Equium A100-147, Its been working fine for last couple of year.
But in the last few weeks has get problem in sound and video (broken sound and video).
The sound is breaking and sometimes uable to listen + video breaking and so much delay due to its get so slow with so much sound distorsion etc..
This remains after new installation (format HDD) of Wind XP unable to fix even installed new drivers.
The Device Manager shows all drivers including audio and video working ok, d'nt know what's problem please help me.
    Thanks.

    Hi
Something like that can happen during high HDD activity this means that the reading/writing process could affect the sound/video playback
But usually this should not take long time
At the other hand this can happen because of higher temperature
High temperature can affect the CPU and GPU performance
I think you have used this notebook for couple of month without any troubles in my opinion you should check if cooling modules and fans are clogged and could remove the dust and debris from cooling modules use compressed air spray this helps p get rid of dust
Maybe then the notebook will run much better

  • Equium A100 - Unable to boot from bootable disc

    Equium A100-549
My partners son has a 2 year old Toshiba laptop that has become slow over time. I had made a backup of the system with office etc installed using Acronis. Anyway, decided to clear it off by running Acronis and the image saved. The program runs as normal and it drops down to a dos like screen ready to restore. It then sits there with the curser flashing as normal and then it locks up, and doesnt allow you to browse to the image.
I though that this may be corrupted, so reinstalled Acronis. Made an Acronis boot disk to run the image and it ignores the disk and boots straight to the normal hard disk (IDE 0) Still no joy. Then tried the laptops restore disk. In the BIOS I specified CD device as first, and also the restore disk says place in drive and turn off.
Then as it boots hit F12 which brings up a menu allowing you to boot from CD drive. I have done this, but it doesnt appear to look at the CD and just loads windows from the HDD. I removed the CD from system devices and rebooted. It found it and added the new device to itself and requested a reboot. Still no joy!
Scanned with Norton but still no good. Removed Norton. The result is the same. Able to read from the CD and also write to it as well. Ran Toshibas diagnostics on the device and all appears ok with it.
Tried to make a boot disk on flash stick, but this is ignored also, even though specified boot using other devices.
Basically it looks like I cant get it to look at the CD before loading off the HDD.
Would flashing the BIOS cure it? - Registry error causes this?
Is there anywhere that I can speak to someone from Toshiba about this?
Any info / help much appreciated

Worked first time. I was in the middle of running a downloded version of system mechanic to see if it would find anything. Anyway, I placed the restore disk in it and pressed C on reeboot and it worked - foolishly I stopped it and tried again. It worked again. Had searched the entire net and a few forums before coming here. One post and its fixed!!!!
A life saver, especially at christmas as I didnt want to have to buy another laptop.
    Once again thanks
    Nick

  • Equium A100-147 - Native resolution on external LCD doesn't work

    Hi,
My Equium A100-147 has 1 VGA and 1 S-Video output, so I'm using the VGA output on a external LCD monitor with native resolution of 1680x1050@60hz, but the integrated Intel 945 graphics card doesnt give me the right resolution to choose for this monitor, the most close is 1600x1200 and some another weird widescreen resolutions that make my monitor scaling show a ugly image.
So I tested another external monitor with native resolution of 1920x1200, and the closest resolution the Intel drivers gave me was 1920x1080, even installing both monitors drivers, removing and reinstalling the driver and even formatting the machine and reinstalling everything from zero didn't give any different results.
I have another laptop MSI Wind with the same graphics card built in and the very same driver version, and the laptop detects both monitor and the right resolutions for them, so it's not a monitor driver problem.
Seems for me that is a problem with the S-Video output that makes this mess, but there is no way to disable it in the BIOS or any another place in device manager I have seem yet.
Does anyone can give me some advice for what can I do?
    Thank you!

actually the resolutions available to external monitors here on the intel control panel are
    800x600
    1024x768
    1280x1024
    1400x1050
    1600x1200
    1856x1392
    1920x1080
    1920x1440
    2048x1536
so it seems possible to use another widescreen resolution at least to match aspect ratio without matching the right resolution.
I've just hooked my 1080p hdtv via VGA and I'm able to use 1920x1080 16:9 aspect ratio
seeing this another resolutions that aren't on the manual, maybe its possible to make custom resolutions as well.
I've tried make a custom driver using the intel ones and power strip but without success because I don't know exactly the range of frequencies to setup the driver .inf

I am trying to install my ethernet drivers and the drivers I got from the site, apart from not being able to access them on sunday they do not work, windows does not pick them up and there seems to be no install/setup file?
Please can someone help this is really annoying now...

    Help!

    Hi
It seems that the Equium A100-147 belongs to the PSAABE.
Please be sure that you have used and installed the right LAN driver for this series!!!
I think the notebook uses the Intel Ekron-R(82562GZ) Chip.
If you want you can download the Lan (Ethernet) driver from the Intel page.
    This will works for sure!!!

  • Equium A100-147 Virtual Sound reinstall problem

I have read a few posts relating to the same problem I have, but with no definitive answer. I have the Equium A100-147 with Windows XP Media Center. I downloaded some up to date files from the Toshiba site (all for my model), including:
    acsil-xpmce-100008-en
    assist-xpmce-10300-en
    confree-xpmce-59007ab-en

    sd-secure-xpmce-104-en
    sound-xpmce-51005253
    toupad-xpmce-10001st-en
and then: tvs-xpmce-10312-en (latest Virtual Sound driver for the A100-147)
I uninstalled the old version of the Virtual Sound driver before attempting to install the new one. But as I have seen elsewhere, I get the message:
"Toshiba Virtual Sound does not support your computer."
I have spent all afternoon looking up and trying to think of ways to fix this. I have since updated my BIOS (bios-550win). Not one thing I try will make it work. I have even deleted references to Virtual Sound in the registry in case there was any conflict going on. It has made no difference though.
Could someone from Toshiba please explain why I am being told that I cannot install what was working perfectly well until this morning, prior to these updates, which are all for my notebook model? It's ridiculous. Apologies for my tone, but having wasted hours on this, I am extremely frustrated and just want my laptop back the way it was (and before you ask, yes, I have tried a System Restore, but that does not work either).
    Thanks,
    Mac
