Equium A60-191: Modem issue - Only analog phone lines are supported

My Equium A60 was powered up when lightning struck nearby and caused the electricity supply to go off and back on.
The OS is XP Home and my ISP is AOL. When I try to access the Net by DUN, I receive the repeated error message:
"Connected phone line is not compatible with this modem. Only analog phone lines are supported."
My desktop computer, which also uses AOL, still connects to the same phone line without any problem.
I have rebooted the A60 several times; changed and tried out 2 phone connnection cables - both work; the phone line works fine; I have reinstalled the driver provided on this site; removed the tick from the box that says to wait for the dial phone; checked out that the modem is in working and on the Device Manager list. All of this is to no avail.
Troubleshooter is suggesting that COM 3 is not enabled. I cannot see COM 3 listed in Device Manager, under Ports.
I have tried Google and ASK with the error message. There are not many posts and it appears that the Toshiba modem is in fact an Agere. This makes seems to be the subject of some of the complaints.
Finally I have uninstalled the driver/modem, AOL and one other DUN connection. I rebooted and went through the process of installing "New Hardware" and AOL. Whilst the modem is enabled and allegedly working... I am still unable to connect to the Net. I reinstalled an additional 'pay as you go' ISP. When I try to dial out on that it generates the error 680. It does this even when the box is unchecked, for wait for a dial tone.
I would be most grateful if anybody could help. I have run out of ideas.
Many thanks.

Hi
You are right, the modem support the Agere Modem Chip.
You will not find the COM3 in the device manager because the modem uses not real com port. Its a virtual com port.
I think you should start the diagnostic tool test and check if the Modem has no malfunction.
Additional you should delete the connection in the Region Select Utility and after new reboot create a new one.
I found also the useful Microsoft article about the Troubleshooting network and dial-up connections.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/trouble_all.mspx?mfr=true
and here you will find info about the DUNS error 680:

  • Equium A60-191 - Need a new recovery disk

Hi there. Does any one know where I can get a Toshiba Equium A60-191 recovery cd from - the one I have has been badly scratched and I need a new one - can I download one on line?
Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thank you
    Dee :-)

The recovery disk cant be downloaded.
If you need a new recovery disk you must ask your local ASP. They can order it.
On the Toshiba website you can search for an ASP:

I have BT Infinity at home with the BT modem connected to the phone line and then to a BThub which delivers the wif signal. I have purchased an airport extreme to improve wi fi strength if how do I connect up to hub it states connect modem to WAN on back of Airport Extreme.
Instructions do not mention connection to BT Hub and the BT modem has only one output which you dicsonnect from Hub and connect to airport extreme leaving. Once you do this Hub has no signal.
    How do I rectify
    Paul

you can also set up the Airport extreme to extend the wireless by hitting the wireless tab in the airport menu then click the drop down menu to select extend
Apple's "extend" function is a proprietary setting that was designed to only work with other Apple routers.
It would be extremely unlikely that this setting would work with a BT product, or any other manufacturer's product for that matter.
But, I haven't tested this with a BT product...and I suppose anything is possible.
Still, I would be extremely surprised if this worked.
The AirPort Extreme might "join" the BT network if you try this......but the AirPort does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it "joins" a wireless network. In fact, it really does nothing when it "joins" a network except enable the USB port.

  • Equium A60: Blue Screen issue

I've got a Equium A60 Series (PSA667E), reconditioned. There's a blue screen apearing sometimes, when I start up, sending me a message of error. I've tried to upgrade my BIOS, as the website indicated. But a message tell me that I dont need, because its already upgraded. So, I've got the correct BIOS but my blue screen problem persist. What can I do....

    Hi
Sometimes the blue screen appears because of serious software error or a hardware malfunction (memory). Well, its not easy to say why this message occurs in you case because we dont have detailed informations. Usually the OS installation solves commonly the blue screen errors. But if there is a hardware fault so only a ASP could solve this issue.

  • Equium A60 - AC adaptors issue

    Hi all,
My Equium A60 keep blowing the power unit.
It has blown 4 so far - 2 were cheap rubbish but 2 were branded so should have been reliable.
I recently upgraded the ram to 1.25 GB and upgraded the HD from 60GB to 80GB and it had been overheating and cutting out.
Would this be causing the laptop to blow the adapter?
    Geoff

    Hello
This notebook model is pretty old and who knows in which condition the hardware is. Have you ever cleaned it up?
Upgrade should not have any negative influence. Overheating means the notebook cannot be cooled down properly. In most cases the cooling vents and cooling grill are blocked by dust.
So I am afraid it is the time for professional cleaning.
About AC adaptors I cannot say much but be careful about that. Dont make some experiments. Protect yourself and protect the area where you use the notebook. the best way to do this is to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider. they should check the notebook to see what is wrong there.

  • EMac modem does not release phone line

I have an original eMac. The modem is capabale of receiving and sending faxing. However, occasionally it does not "release" the phone line causing any incoming fax to get a busy signal and if you try to dial the phone number you also get a busy signal. Unplugging the phone line from the modem port resolves the issue as does restarting.
What can be done to fix this issue besides getting a new modem.
    Thanks!

I recall having similar problems with my home pre-broadband dial-up account under 10.1.5. That was blamed on the computer modem and the ISP modems implementing different versions of the same modem protocol (which certainly doesn't say mush for the 'standard' part of the v.92 protocol). That I thought was fixed in later versions of OS X, but you may still want to contact your ISP to ask them if they're aware of other Mac dial-up users with the same problem and if they can suggest any modem commands to add to your modem command strings. You can ask them to check on their end to see if they're receiving the line release command from your modem when you attempt to hang up.
Since most Mac-related questions to ISP support seem to garner a response of "huh?", your other option would be to try dropping the modem protocol from v.92 to v.90 (and if necessary even lower) to see if those protocols are more compatible with your ISP's modem banks.

  • Major Problem with Phone Line and Support.

Well my problem started about a month and week ago. The problem is that my phone line is messed up. My line drops out unexpectedly and I cant receive calls or send calls. If it does work then the phone only rings for half a second 3 times. If you dont pick it up mostly on the first ring you cant answer the call. And if it doesnt the caller who calls me gets a verizon voice message thing that is setup for the previous owner of the phone number. We called verizon a month ago and setup a appointment for the 18th. Well they called the 17th and said they were sorry they missed us for the appointment on the 17th. We told them it was on the 18th and they said that they guess they forgot to call to tell us the date was changed to the 17th. So they said they will have someone out the next day, on the 18th. We waited at home and they still didnt show up. We called and they set a appointment on the 28th. We waited and they never came again. Now its the 30th and its getting rediculous. We refuse to pay for a service that will never be fixed and we cant use but for 1/3 of the time, if lucky. Is there any fix to this other than getting another appointment?

It sounds to me like your phone line has a short somewhere.  If it was a "hard short", your phone wouldn't work at all.  But yours rings, and then shorts out.  Could be a wiring issue, or it could be a phone issue.  I would unplug all equipment (phones, faxes, computers, etc).  Then take one good phone to a jack and plug it in.  See if the problem still exists.  If it is still a problem, try a different phone at that same jack.  If it's cleared, the problem is with the first phone, if it's still there, unplug the phone and try a different jack.  If the problem cleared, the trbl is at the first jack.  If it's still there, then you either have a short somewhere inside your home wiring, OR the phone number MIGHT BE FORWARDING to another number (which would explain the strange message that callers receive).  Find out how to remove call forwarding in your area (usually by hitting *73 on your phone).  Please post results.

  • Equium A60-191: What application controls battery status in system tray?

I have had to re-install XP. This caused the loss of the drivers and quite probably other stuff I don't know about.
One of the items missing seems to be the software or driver? for the battery. The battery no longer charges up to full power. The software that set in the system tray used to indicate the power status and whether it was ac or dc connected.
Any suggestions what I need and where I can get it from to fix this problem, please?

    Hi
In my knowledge you dont need any drivers or software to charge the battery to full power. Only what you need is the Toshiba Power saver utility.
This utility is very useful because you can configure the different power modes for a different notebook usage. For example if you have disconnect the AC adaptor from the notebook the Power saver will automatically switch to the power mode which was configured for the battery usage.
Such modes help to take care of battery and increases the battery life time and it shows a battery status in the task bar
But it has nothing to do witch the battery charging.
In my user manual I have found many info about the battery and how to handle the battery usage. I think the same information you will find in your user manual. Check it.
The last possibility could be a battery malfunction.
But in such case only a battery replacement will solve your issue.
If you want you can try to check if the same happens with the new battery.

  • All-in-one 6830 printer Does not enter sleep mode when connected to a phone line

HP staff  help. HP all-in-one printer 6830 does not enter sleep mode when conntected to a phone line via 1-Line jack.  The Firmware is PNP1CN1521AR. On August 1, 2015,  I purchased an HP all-in-one 6830  printer and upgraded to firmware PNP1CN1521AR.When a phone line is connected to 1-Line jack of 6830, the printer will no longer enter  sleep mode and the display remains on indefinitly.Removing the phone connection either from the wall outlet or from the printer causes the sleep mode to work correctly again where the control panel display turns off after 5 minutes (or optionally  after 10 or 15 minutes). This problem was previously reported by a user and has not been resolved, see:http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Printing-Questions/Sleep-mode-of-Officejet-Pro-6830/td-p/4772182 The user did not receive a resolution to this problem according to the thread.
There seems to be a  6830 printer firmware or hardware problem causing this. HP  should be able to confirm this problem on 6830 easily.
    Please advise ASAP.
    Thanks

It's a regular analog phone line. I've tested it with other phone lines. No difference. I have another all-in-one printer which works fine (goes to sleep mode) when plugged into the same phone line.
The 6830 works ok in other aspects. The only problem is the sleep mode. Any 6830 with the firmware I mentioned should replicate the same result, regardless of anything else. The previous firmware to PNP1CN1521AR also created this problem according to the original report of this problem by another user.
I'm sure there's a bug in the firmware. A subroutine in the firmware monitoring the incoming fax ringing, mistakenly, sees the voltage across the phone jack pins as an event and wakes up the printer instantly even though there's no ringing. As the previous user also suspected, there seems to be an error in the phone line voltage threshold used by the firmware. The present firmware always sees a ringing at the phone line which causes it to never stay in sleep mode.

  • Airport express with phone line instead of ethernet?

    Hi there:
I manage a HUGE plantation estate in rural Virginia that has many outbuildings, cottages, offices and a main house.  We have barely 3MB of speed from the phone company to the office and the house only gets 1.5 MB.  The office has an ethernet DSL modem, but the house has a separate line with only a phone line that the 1.5 is currently coming thru.  Many of the walls are stone and extremely thick (think Colonial times) and signal is very hard to permeate these.
I bought an Express and an Extreme in hopes of boosting the signal throughout the office and house.  Currently they have a NetGear Wifi router trying to do this.
Can I connect the Express in the room with only the phone line or do I have to have ethernet?
Will this equipment boost better than the Netgear?  or am I wasting my time?  I have a Time Capsule at home and I get signal across my whole property all the way into my garage studio (across acres), so I am hoping this may be the case at the Estate.  (Although at my house we have 10MB of speed not only 3 or less).
    Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Internet devices normally use only Ethernet. However, there are some that operate over power lines. See Best power-line adapters - CNET Reviews. For information see Power line communication - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

  • Noisy Phone Line - initially

    Hi All,
I have a rather interesting problem that I'm wondering if anybody has experienced, or may know the cause. For a couple of weeks now I have had an issue where the phone line is very noisy when first used; i.e. I'll pick it up and it will be popping and crackling and hissing with gay abandon however, during the call the line will slowly improve until after 10 minutes or so it is clear as a bell.
This also has a knock on effect on the broadband - if the telephone has not been used for a while the BB speeds will drop. I first noticed the problem as my BB speed had dropped to sub 1Mb from its usual 4.5-5Mb. When checking the line I heard it popping and crackling away although after time this cleared and when I checked the BB speed again it was back to normal (or close to it). Then the next morning BB speed was down again, next afternoon it was even worse.
I have tried everything I can to rule out something internal - replace all micro filters, replaced RJ11 cable to router - even replaced the router. Used both a corded and cordless phone and the result is the same. I've now removed the faceplate from the master socket and I'm running everything off that but the problem still remains. The only thing that seems to improve it is to make a call of some length and then the line quality and BB speed improves - for a while.
Any advice anyone can offer will be gratefully received. I would call for an engineer, but I'm worried that if I've used the phone before he turns up everything will seem OK and I'll get hit with a £100 bill.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    UPDATE:
So, I made an appointment last Wednesday (14th August) for an engineer to visit and I was told that somebody would be here today before 17:00.
I take the day off and wait in all day for nobody to turn up. I contact 151 to see what is happening only to be told that no appointment had been made! So I have had to waste a day off, and will have to waste yet another day on Wednesday, waiting for an engineer again.
Is there a number in this country that I can call in order to make a complaint? Can I seek reimbursement of £99 from BT for wasted time (the same amount they would have charged me if I couldn't be bothered waiting in for them)?
The only plus is that now I have been on the phone for 30 minutes dealing with this the quality of the line has improved and the BB speed has gone back to normal again... However this wont last and by tomorrow things will be back to normal again.
I have to say BT's customer service is **bleep** poor and if I had another choice for service provider I would switch immediately, however as there is no other choice in my area I am stuck with BT!
I will update again on Wednesday when (IF!) an engineer is sent.
