Equium L20-197: No line-in jack - How to record from an external audio source

Hi,
I'm generally very pleased with my Equium L20, but am now finding a few annoyances that I guess are cost-cutting issues. For instance, there's no onboard mic, so need to buy one for Voip purposes. And I would like to use this laptop to record from an external audio source, but now discover that there is no line-in jack, and it seems the microphone jack is mono only, even if it was possible to configure the audo card to use this for line-in source.
I'd be very grateful if anyone has any ideas for a workaround perhaps using a USB port.
TIA
Keith

Hi R2D2,
Thanks for your quick reply - it set me on the right track and I've been googling for similar solutions available in the UK. I've since found this product - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/flypage/product_id/9326 and redhawk has pointed me at something by Creative Labs which I'll try and track down.
Regards
Keith

  • How to record from an external source

I recently bought a hp envy 17" and I cant figure out how to record onto this laptop.  I have to jacks on the left side, one with an icon of a headphones, the other with an icon of a headset.  I want to be able to take input a stereo jack to record into one of these and record into a program like Audacity.  Under device manager it says I have an ATI High Def Audio Device.  How do I record from an external source?  Thanks.

@toolchic, first make sure that in the IDT HD Sound properties [right click the IDT ICON near the clock, which says "Controls IDT Audio Settings" on mouse over the icon], and choose "Open Audio control panel".
Next choose "Recording > Settings". Here choose the input you want to record with. In your case choose "Integrated Microphone Array" on the top left. Click "Settings" just bellow, slide the bar to "10db boost" on the right, and slide the recording level bar about midway up [at the bottom of the window where all the volume controls for all recording devices are].
While you/re there, it's a good idea to mute the "External mic", and mute any other recording device that you do not need. Next, click the "Processing" tab below the settings tab, and choose "Reduce noise". Leave all the others unchecked. for these will produce a not so nice sound. This helps to eliminate fan noise and other background noise in your recording.
Now when you open your preferred digital audio program e.g.. Audacity [it's free and pretty easy to use, see link below], you can choose the INTEGRATED MIC ARRAY in the recording options. Choose that and then "arm" the track for recording [Usually an icon with R in the recording controls] Next click "record" to begin recording. Of course these steps depend on the digital audio recording program you're using.
If you don't have a dedicated digital audio recording program, and if you have windows 7 or vista, you can record long sessions with the default Microsoft recording program [this program is useless in XP, for it only records for like a minute or so, maximum!. A dedicated program such as Audacity records depending on how much hard drive disk space, or close to that.
@fritz, in essence, input jacks of most current notebooks, external computer mics are mono, but they use a  stereo mini jack [or 3 band, if I understood you correctly]. These are the same as regular earphone jacks. One band is signal, one is earth, and the other is +5 Volts to drive the condenser [these are known as "condenser mics"]. But if you use a dedicated studio type recording mic, then you need a dedicated preamp, and if it is a condenser as apposed to a dynamic mic, the preamp needs to supply what's known as "phantom power" [typically 45v] through the input jack where the mic is plugged into.
However, if you record from the mic in/line in jack of a line out of say a mic preamp, channel mixer deck, CD/DVD/TV etc., then this has to be a stereo mini jack [has 3 bands]. Special cables with 2 [stereo] RCA jacks to mini jack are the ones to use. That is if the line out connector of your recording course is RCA [your typical TV/CD//DVD audio / video out or in are RCA connectors e.g..].

  • Equium L20-197 - memory issue

I have memory issue with L20 computer pc-world and currys are selling the L20 with following spec 256mb main memory and 128mb video memory(not up to 128) when that is not the case first of all the memory is shared and it takes 64mb out of main memory and when you try to up video memory in bios it will not let you up it to 128 unless you install another stick of main memory has anybody else noticed this problem? i know the previous L10 model with the intel video chipset was supposed to allocate video memory dependant on load but there is no mention of this on the ati chipset model. any ideas!!!

This information is for anybody with Memory issues
Concerning a TOSHIBA EQUIUM L20-197 Laptop, purchased from PC World or Groups (PC World/Currys/Dixons)
I purchased this laptop for Christmas for my daughter,
The sales man assured me at the time that he would recommend buying Norton internet security suite, because it was half the price when you buy any PC or Laptop.
What he did not tell me is, when you load the Norton software, the operating system is so slow it is just about unusable!
This problem is down to memory issues, the motherboard should have 256MB, but the operating system only gets 192MB due to the Graphics card steeling 64MB.
The answer to this problem is firstly the Graphics card should be set to 128MB in the Bios setting; this is not possible with the memory only being 256MB on the motherboard.
Secondly, the minimum requirements for Norton internet Security and Windows XP is 256MB not 192MB.
Being an Engineer myself and pointing out this to the Manager at PC World, he allowed me to purchase the memory locally and refunded the difference due to the price.
    I purchased 512MB DDR2 533PC-320 for 27.48 the Toshiba now works like a dream.
One last point I do not recommend any body to install Norton Go back on your Laptop that comes with Norton internet Security, when you have Windows XP it just takes up too much space on your hard drive and you have System Restore anyway.

  • Equium L20-197 does not work anymore

May I call on you all for a bit of help on this one.
I have been given an Equium L20-197 which does not work anymore. Not having the chance to ever see it running I'm not sure on a couple of things.
It's totally dead, with the power supply connected there is no sign of life, no power light, nothing.
I know there are many things it could be.
Question is should it power up while there is no battery connected, just the power supply plugged in?
If it will then at least I can move past a battery problem, yes the battery may still be faulty but it would mean that the motherboard is probably us. If it must have a battery fitted, even a flat one then it could be the battery.
Just trying to work through it step by step.
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi mate,
hehe, looks like a technician is here. :) Its a really good idea to making it step by step because every good techie acts like you. So I do, and it helped me many times.
Regarding your question: the battery must not be connected to start the machine, so if the machine wont start up even just with AC connected then you can be sure that a really serious hardware problem is present.
In such case, you can either remove everything (HDD, CDROM,etc) and try it again. You can also exchange the AC-adapter and the RAM. So, if the machine still wont start up, then contact an ASP (Authorized Service Partner) and ask for a hardware checkup/repair. That would be the last resort.
Heres a link to find the nearest ASP in your country:

  • Equium L20-197 - replacement battery

    Hello.
I have noticed (at the wrong time too) that the battery life of my Toshiba Equium L20-197 has POOR battery life.
On a long charge it lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes max.
I'm looking to extend the battery life of my unit. The problem is that the More4You doesn't list any batteries for my model.
Where can I find a beter battery for my laptop? The select options for a product featur on the More4You page, doesn't list compatible batteries.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, Ive just bought one of these and its given me over three hours usage.

  • Equium L20-197 - WIreless Connection issues

A have an old Toshiba Equium L20-197 laptop running windows XP home edition.
It contains an Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adaptor.
The problem I have is that it will connect to my BT home hub (and says that the connection is excellent), but will not connect to any website.
I have added a USB 802.11g wireless adapter to see if I can get a connection through that, and it works fine (although interestingly only using the Ralink Wireless Utility which comes with it - when I tried it with Windows Wireless Zero Configuration I had the same problem as before - no internet connection - switched back to the Ralink WIreless Utility and it works fien again).
The internal wireless adaptor used to work fine, but now does not - any suggestions welcome.
    Many Thanks
    Rob
PS I have gone to the device manager and checked for driver updates, but it tells me that it can't find anything better than the driver version being used!

    Hi
Maybe there are some conflicts between internal WLan card and the new external USB 802.11g wireless adapter.
Otherwise you should check the configuration of Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adaptor.
In device manager -> WLan card -> properties -> Advanced tab you should change the Wlan standard 802.11 (A B G) to the same which is used by Router.
If the router uses 802.11 G then change this in Wlan settings too!
Check also the channel. I set the channel on my router and WLan card to 11.
You could also try to connect to router without using any WLan encryption. Of course this should be done only for testing.
Las but not least update the WLan driver:

  • How to Boot From an External HD

I am still pondering getting a mini - I know that I will want a much larger hard drive (since I want to use it for media and will keep tons of video and music on it). I would like to know how to boot from an external hard drive. I've searched google, the forums, and apple support, and see people mention it all the time, but can't find out how to do it, etc. Is it just like running off my normal HD but all the files are kept on the external (so I could still access files thru itunes, etc.)?
Also, I would like to get a 500GB+ drive to keep my files on, and was wondering if people had recomendations. Brands, USB 2.0 or Firewire, etc.
Apologies if this is a novice question - but I can't seem to find answers anywhere.
    Thanks in advance.

Firstly, it is certainly possible to boot from an external drive, so what you plan is not only feasible, but since the external would be faster than the internal drive, also rather beneficial to the efficient running of the mini - meaning, the system will be notably faster in use.
In my view, the best option is an external firewire drive, not USB. The reason is that FW has it's own dedicated controller while USB doesn't. In effect, it means that FW data transfer speeds are stable and consistent, while USB rates vary widely, depending on what else the system is doing.
Once you have your external drive connected, the easiest way to make it bootable is to copy your existing MacOS install from the internal drive using software such as Carbon Copy Cloner (downloadable from www.versiontracker.com). This will avoid having to do a lengthy reinstall. Once MacOS is copied, then open System Preferences, and the Startup Disk preference pane, and click on the external drive icon. The next restart will then be directed to the external.
Once you have booted from the external drive, you use it just as you would an internal, and MacOS will treat it as the boot volume, including by default, placing your user account folders on it, including your documents, music etc.

  • How to record from the video in or S-video Ports on Qosmio G40?

Can anyone tell me how to record from the video in or S-video ports, because i've tried the Ulead DVD factory program and the only capture device it could see was the webcam, and it did capture from it
After that i've downloaded the update file that was provided by the support website
The devices that the program could see are the TV tuner and the webcam (which it couldn't access anymore for some reason)
After that i've downloaded a newer update which simply is the same as the last update and seems that someone in the support website directed the link of the new update which they don't have to the file of the previous update which doesn't really do anything.

    Hi
There are 2 s-video ports; s-video out port is not designed to capture the signals from any external source. The name of this port says everything; its an OUT port!
The s-video-in port must be placed at the right side of the notebook. Dont mix the both ports. But note; this port receives only the video signals. To hear the sounds, use a video cable to connect the sound terminals of the audio device and your computer.
    Red: sound right channel
    White: sound left channel
The Ulead DVD Movie factory can be used to capture this signal.

  • Can someone tell me step by step how to record from audio tape to mac book with the help of xitel import deluxe

Can someone tell me step by step how to record from audio tape to mac book with the help of xitel inport deluxe system.  Somebody had mentioned that we do not have to download the software - so I did not, but the computer does not recognize the connection.  How can I know it is connected - can someone please tell me step by step as teaching a layman.  Thanks.

It seems this question is best posed to the makers of "xitel".

  • Need drivers update for Equium L20-197

Can anyone tell me where i can get updated drivers for my L20-197. I have installed XP pro and would like to update the drivers.
    Dave.

    Hi Boona
You are right but maybe they will be available in next few days. If you dont want to wait do this:
Preinstall your unit with recovery media. Create your own Tools & Utilities CD. This option you will find under Toshiba Assist under protect & fix.
Now you have all drivers that you need. I am pretty sure that you will also find on this CD a document about installations order. Now you can install WXP Professional.
    Good luck!

  • Equium L20-197 Battery will not charge

    I have an L20-197.
It runs off the power lead OK but will not run on the battery.
I just spent a fortune on a new battery but, it still doesn't work.
So there must be something wrong between the battery and the lap-top.
    Any ideas anybody?

If your new battery didnt solve your charging issue then it must be something wrong with the hardware part.
Its really not easy to say what part could be wrong possibly power supply electronic malfunctions
However, fact is that its not easy to fix the hardware issues and in most cases only the authorized service provider could help.
So we can discuss here about possible faults and can post some statements but finally a ASP technician will be needed to find out whats really wrong.
    Good luck

  • How to copy from an external hard drive collection to a folder on your mac?

I put 2000 images from my honeymoon on an external hard drive. I flag my favorites and work on 7 images i layter but in an collection. I am really proud of this 7 images and want to put them in my portfolio map on my laptop. BUT that seems to be impossible! I have the choice to move the files from the external hard drive or make a virtual copy! I want them in bout my external hard drive and laptop! This is turning out to be a mess. What to do now? And how to prevent this in the future?
What is the best way to manage and storage images?
If I only could copy an collection! SO FRUSTRATING.
    Please help me

I am really proud of this 7 images and want to put them in my portfolio map on my laptop.
In Lightroom, select the 7 images, then use File->Export, and make sure the exported photos wind up in the desired location.
What is the best way to manage and storage images?
I would manage the photos inside of Lightroom using keywords, captions, flags, star ratings and any other Lightroom organizational tool that seems appropriate. I would then use Lightroom as the mechanism for searching for and locating and displaying whatever photos you are interested in finding. If you need copies of the photos for non-Lightroom use, as in your example of 7 images, then use File->Export.

  • How & why Record with an external drive?

Hi. Okay, in another topic I posted it was recommended that I record with an external drive and not the internal drive... I have a 7200rpm firewire 400 lacie drive... so how do record with it? Why and how will this improve my Logic Pro recording experience? I also have a FirePod firewire interface.
    Thanks,
    Bill K.

To record onto an external drive, simply go to the audio menu and choose "Set Audio Record Path..." From here set your recording path to be somewhere on your external drive.
In general, it best to record to a drive other than your system drive. Depending on what you are doing, the system drive can be writing/reading cash files, data files and doing other Logic/OSX related activities in the background, all of which slows down your disk. You of course can still use your system drive to access data, but because its doing other operations, you may not be able to run as many audio tracks at once as you could using a dedicated external drive.
Try both methods and see which works best for you and your system.

  • How to record with en external mic instead of built-in in iSight

    Hi,
I just want to record simple videos with the webb cam iSight. I want the audio to sound better and use an external mic during the recording.
After testing I see that iMove uses only the built-in mic, there is no difference if I connect the external mic to the computer with USB or 3,5mm blug mic.
How can change that iMovie would use the external mic instead of built-in?
The audio sounds really bad I want to sound better with the mic. For sure now in iMovie 11 there's an equalizer which makes a difference but I still can't make the sound more "close", it sounds more like eco.
    Any audio tips?

Your built-in iSight is only a camera. It has no mic of its own, so you started with your Mac's built-in mic.
iMovie lets you select among connected mics in the "Voiceover" pane as shown here:
When you click on the "Voiceover" choices bar, you will be able to select among all mics available to your system. (The only reason that this picture shows "iSight" as the "Record from:" mic is that I captured the image while using an external iSight, which does have its own built-in mic.)

    (1) Like you, I use the Logitech USB Desktop mic for my voiceovers. It offers sound good enough for me at a price I can afford.
    (2) Note that other apps that allow you to select various audio sources each have their own way of doing so. For instance, FaceTime changes mics with a FaceTime > Video menu command as shown here:
You can also record A/V in Snow Leopard's QuickTime Player, which lets you select mics in its "Preferences..." as shown here:
    (3) The Help menu of any Mac app that lets you select among various sources may give info on how that particular app lets you select which microphone you use.

  • How to Import from an external HD to LightRoom.

I am brand new to Creative Cloud and to LightRoom. I have read and listened to importing from a memory card but am unsure as to how to import from the backup drive from my older Mac Pro to my new iMac. The external drive is already the backup for the new iMac, is plugged in and working. I can see the HDD in the LR panel and can find the "pictures" folder within the dropdown. I am not sure if the "pictures folder (on the lefthand panel) is the old b/u or the iMac HDD. I can get to where I need to be if I can figure out what I'm looking at and what I should look for as to the 2 HDD's, b/u and/or iMac. I am aware of the righthand panel but the interactions are totally unfamiliar to me. Thanks for any help and advice. TCrowe

If you are importing from a hard drive then you don't need to worry about the right-hand panel in the import dialog. You would locate the folder that you want to import in the left-hand panel. At the top of the import screen you would choose the "Add" option. This will add those images to your catalog without having to move them anywhere. If you want to place copies on a different hard drive then you would choose the Copy option at the top of the import screen. Then the right-hand panel will enable you to specify where you want the copies to be placed.
