Equium M40X-189: How to connect RGB port to RS232 port?

Hi,
as you know the Equium M40X-189 P-M 730/XP has an RGP monitor port and does not have RS232 port.
Im working with Auto-titration device which require RS232 port for connection!
Any idea of how i can connect my notebook to this device!

As far as I know the RS-232 port is a serial port and I dont think that its possible to connect the RGB port to the RS232 port.
But I have found the useful website:

Please dont be mad on me but I think that forum is not the right place to pick up this kind of information. CPU exchange is very sensible area and I think you should contact service or some independent hardware upgrade store.
Basically CPU upgrade is not possible because of so-called permanent connection method. I dont want to say it is definitely not possible but CPU upgrade can but for result it can have some negative aspects like higher power consumption and much shorter running time with battery power supply, cooling will not be as before and I am afraid that cooling vent will run constantly.
What to say about performance. I believe you will not see much more difference because CPU on this unit is good enough and better, cheaper and without risk solution, is to upgrade RAM to maximum.

Equium M40x-189: DVD DL Formats

Hi,
I've recently bought a Toshiba Equium M40x 189 laptop, and have read the manual regarding DVD formats that can be written to. However, I would like to know whether or not this laptop can write a DVD-DL dvd, I know in the manual it says it can write a DVD+DL, so i'd just like to know....Hope someone can help.

Yesyou can write DL discs with this machine.
I would reccomend that you stick to major brands like Maxell, TDK or Verbatim.

Cannot download Adobe Flash Player on Equium M40X-189

I am unable to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player on my Equium M40X 189.
This is needed for many applications, and has recently become absolutely essential as BBC radio now only broadcasts on the internet via BBC i-player, which I cannot use without Flash Player.
I searched for help on this problem a while back and the advice then was that the BIOS needed to be updated.
I have today checked with the official Toshiba site, and it seems my BIOS is the current version and does not need updating.
Is there anyone out there who can help me solve this problem?

Sorry - perhaps I didn't spell out the problem correctly. I have tried downloading from all sort of pages on the web, including the official Adobe site and BBC Radio. I have also taken the Adobe advice and checked that I have uninstalled all other version of Flash Player before atempting to download. The same thing always happens - the download seems to start OK, but I get to the bit where the Adobe page says something like "when you can see the movie playing in the box above the installation is complete". Trouble is the movie never plays, and the player has not been installed.

Equium M40x-189 - What drivers/utilities I need to install?

Equium m40x-189
Reloaded Windows XP, but havent found the Toshiba Utilities and drivers disk that must have come with the lappy, not a lot works and in Device Manager there are a load of devices with yellow alerts.
The internal wireless is not seeable, nor is a wireless card slotted into the PCMI expansion slot on the side.
These are just the first things I noticed were not available. Need wireless to get to the internet to register Windies.
I am not sure which drivers/utilities I need to download and install from the Toshiba download drivers web site.
Is there such a thing as a list or instructions any where that details what drivers/utilities are required to make all the 'bits' work on a newly Windows loaded laptop.?
Any help would be of immense value.

As you already said on the Toshiba European driver download page you can download all necessary drivers and tools for your notebook.
Furthermore on the website you will find the installation instructions document. Use this list as a recommended driver and software installation order.
I think this is such a list that you mean so check this!!!
Last but not least I think must install every driver and download on the Toshiba page because they are necessary for a properly working notebook.

Equium M40x-189 freezes within 30 seconds of Windows starting

My M40x-189 froze all of a sudeen while using it.
Everytime I restarted it froze again within 30 seconds of windows xp starting.
I have wiped the hard drive and reinstalled xp but it is still freezing.
I have started in safe mode and disabled all of the devices in device manager, then enabling them one by one.
It appears to re-boot ok and work fine as long as the usb host controllers are disabled.
Any advice? Is it software or hardware?
I have tried updating drivers using Drivercure but it doesn't seem to help.
Any advice greatly appreciated

I think its related to the hardware issue but we can only speculate about the faulty part
Maybe its a RAM issue I mean one or both modules could be affected.
My old notebook has frozen because one memory slot got too warm I dont know why but only one slot was affected. I changed the modules and used only one module.
This helped to solve my issue
I think you should test the RAM too.

Equium M40x-189: Question about the HDD and graphic card upgrade

Hi folks just a few quick questions.
1. can a second hard drive be fitted to the afore mentioned notebook?.....it came with a 60gb HDD
2.can a graphics card such as an ati or geforce mobile/go be fitted instead of the onboard graphics?

As was said before, there is no way to install a 2nd harddrive physically on the machine without it being external. And this model does not have a seperate video card, it is integrated on the motherboard. Which means it would not be possible to upgrade it. Unfortunate as it is, best you can do is increase shared memory in bios and under your virtual memory settings. The Qosmio series from Toshiba does include a 2nd hard drive bay for 2 hdd's though, as well as some have seperate video cards so you can even possibly upgrade those as well. But not the Equium M40x. How to send this command to RS232 Port

I want to use LV to control a label printer to print what I need. Following info is from printer user manual.
From RS232 port:
If Codex has been used with the controller then the simple serial protocol will need to be enabled by sending ESC Z SWITCH ON <CR> (without spaces). Codex automatically disables the simple protocol for security reasons, so it is a good idea to start all sessions with this command.

In VB I can use this command to control the printer. But In LV how can I do?

A string control or constant in LabVIEW can be set for normal, hex, or '\' code display by just right clicking on the control constant. CHR$(27) is the the ESC character and the hex equivalent of 27 is 1B. The CR is hex 0D. So, a simple way to do this would be to have a hex display constants for the ESC and CR character and a normal display for the the command. Use the concantanate string function to build one string.

How to connect TV with limited HDMI ports?

My Panasonic Plasma TV has 2 HDMI ports. I have been using HDMI 1 for a DVD Recorder and TV linked through HDMI 2. This gave me upscaled 1080p resolution on both.
I want to move TV to the Component ports to allow me to attach a Cinema system to the HDMI 2 port. This will give the neatest solution for the TV/DVD/Cinema remotes.
Is it possible to connect a Cinema system (5.1) to HDMI 2 as I understand that this will "disable" the Component Ports.
Prior to getting the Cinema System, as an experiment I have attached TV with component cables but the picture resolution is poor, I suspect it is only 480p. Is this to be expected?
I would like the Cinema sound for normal TV and for iTunes music etc. Is this set-up possible and how is it best to set it up.
If not how best can I meet my needs?

I thought that switching TV off for a while it would reset and set up on the newly found connections. However I have invoked the Video output scan from the  Remote unit. This went through all the options from 480p, 576p, 720p, 720HD and 1080p, which were all OK. There was one hiccup when the picture exceed the Plasma height but re scanning reset this.
The pictures are now in the highest quality and all the thumbnails are now visible.
I was experimenting with alternatives as I wish to avoid HDMI switches and also by using Panasonic Cinema system means all the remotes are compatible, if not exactly interchangeable.
I will now have to decide which units give me the best set-up.

Why when I plug mini dvihdmicable adapter into the mini dvi port and then into my HDTV nothing happens? What am I not doing?

The device you bought looks like the Plugable adapter I bought, which is based on Prolific PL2303, so you just need to know what the tty for the serial device is. The drivers on the Plugable site says 10.6 or greater, so maybe try those.

In my case, its /dev/tty.usbserial. If you want to just connect to a switch, install the drivers and use screen like so:
screen <serial device> <baud rate>
ex:
screen /dev/tty.usbserial 115200

Equium M40X-189 - Touch Pad has stopped working

The touch pad froze. I restarted the computer and the touch pad worked. This happened several times, and then restarting did not clear the problem. I checked under Device Manager several times and sometimes the mouse was listed and sometimes it wasn't! I Restored the computer to an earlier time when the touch pad was working but this didn't fix it. A Toshiba Agent suggested the soft ware was corrupt and I should back up every thing and use the recovery disc to reload the software for the touch pad. I'm not ready to do this yet. Currently an ALPS Pointing Device and an HID Compliant Mouse are listed under Device Manager and both are erroneously reported as working. Any other ideas on how to fix the touch pad?

In my opinion you should try to use external mouse to see if this occur again and again. Believe me on this way it is not easy to say why this happen.
Maybe there is some hardware problem but it must be tested. If you preinstall the unit with recovery CD the unit will be clean and on this way it is not possible to say that some additional software has any kind of influence on this.

Just short comment: If you will not be able to obtain original recovery media for your notebook you can also install OS using original Microsoft installations CD. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can download from http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/ > Support & Downloads.

Hiya.
Could somebody tell me if it's possible to obtain better graphics performance through a card in the PCB slot on my laptop?
If not, please inform me of any upgrades or tips that I could do to get my graphics up to scratch (eg. ready for Vista?).

If I am remember well your unit has shared video memory. In my opinion there is no much to do. Graphic card upgrade is not possible and only thing you can do is to upgrade RAM to maximum (2GB). Interesting on this unit is that just one slot is user upgradeable. Because of that you can use PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-1M1G) for upgrade.
If you want to use all graphic features on Vista like glass effect I am afraid your unit will not be powerful enough for doing that. If you will make some tests please inform us.

Equium M40X-189 wont start up - Power comes on but blank screen

When powering on Laptop the power light comes on and the power supply fan comes on but nothing to the screen.
Then shuts down sometimes or blue power light stays on, then eventually turns off.
So frustrating, have no money for new one for daughter or to pay for an expensive repair, praying its a easy fix (but deep down no this will not be case).
Any help will be really appreciated.

Try reseating the Memory (RAM). Or if you recently installed more RAM, remove the extra module

Equium M40x 189 - Memory confusion....

Hi there,
According to the Toshiba Spec, the max DDR can be 2Gb, however whilst searching a number of sites for the best price, there are a few which state the max is 1.5Gb.
Can anyone confirm which is correct? Obviously instinct is to say, go with the manufacturer, but its not just 1 site that state 1.5Gb...

As far as I know the notebook supports max 2048MB memory.
The notebook uses the PC2700 DDR-RAM modules and these modules are compatible:
