Equium M40x 230: display issue

My 2 week old equium M40x-230 with ATI x600 SE display adaptor has screen corruption problems at various times, in various programs. The screen will get 'snow'. It will redraw most of the time but sometimes freezes and will give BSOD pointing the finger at an infinite loop in ati2dvag.
I've reinstalled the display drivers which were the latest in any case and the BIOS is the latest 1.60 version.
Any ideas? Is this a case for warranty return?
Thanks
Ken

Hello Ken
It is really not easy to give you right advice but in my opinion you should back upr your data and reinstall the unit with recovery DVD. Please test the unit without installation of other applications. If the snow issue occurs again contact the service partner and let them check the unit.
If the problem occurs because of hardware malfunction the warranty will cover repair costs.

  • Equium M40x-230 - Lost dispaly driver

    Hi, I'm new here.
I have had this Toshiba laptop model Equium M40x-230 for about 4-5 years now. The hard drive is getting full so I thought I'd delete some unwanted files. I did 2 things
    1) uninstall some programs which I don't use any more
    2) use disk clean-up to remove unused files.
I thought I knew exactly what I was deleting, but when I was done, I found the display had gone weird.
When I checked, i found it was showing only a default driver. Even worse, when I went to the Recycle bin to try and undo what I had done, there were no files in it.
I have tried doing a system restore, but that doesn't work.
I went to the Toshiba website and searched for drivers for my laptop. It found 2 options. I downloaded each of these and tried to install them. The first one (Intel) said my system did not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. The other one (ATI) said the length of the specified directory path plus the installation folder name exceeds 88 characters and to shorten it?
Please can anyone help me get my display back to how it was. This is useable but looks awful and basic.
I know I'm a dummy so please be gentle with me.

    Hi AnnieD,
Thats a typcial example that you should always know what you uninstall and which disk cleanup software you using. Such special software isnt always recommendable.
Anyway, it seems that your notebook is equipped with ATI card and therefore you need the ATI driver that you can download here:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers
Before you install the newest version, make sure that you have removed the old one. Have a look in control panel > Add/Remove programs. Remove the ATI driver/software and restart your notebook. Now you should be able to install the driver again. :)

  • User manual for a Equium M40X-230?

    Hi there,
The screen needs replacing on my Toshiba Equium M40X-230, and I've been looking for a online version (pdf) of the user manual for it (As it's second hand so I don't own any of the toshiba documents) I basically need it mainly for a insight of how the laptops screen is fitted, I was wondering if anyone can link me to it if they know of it's where abouts as I've checked the Toshiba website and my model isn't listed when I come to try and obtain it.
    Thanks!
    James

Thanks for the reply however, when it comes to selecting my model it is not listed. I can select the product series as M, but after that it doesn't have my model number listed.
Does this mean Toshiba do not have the user manual for my equium in a pdf format?
    Thanks,
    James

  • Equium M40x-230 - Vidoes doesn't play continous

Since purchasing the Equium M40x-230 in 2005, it has never been able to play online or offline video continously, the video stops to load for a few seconds to a minute at roughly 10 to 20 second intervals. This occurs whether using itunes, windows media player, or winamp.
I have downloaded the latest version of Adobe flash, but I am uncertain that this is a fault with the notebook itself. The operating system has been re-installed a few times but the problem remains. I have not this problem on a newer toshiba netbook.
    The System information is:
    OS windows XP SP3,
    Intel (R) Pentium (R) M Processor - 1.86GHz,
    512 of RAM.
    Graphic Card - unknown
I would appreciate any information that might lead to a solution for this.
    regards,
    je6543

    Hi
I dont know which videos you are watching but maybe you have to install a new codec pack. Just use Google to find such codec packs.
Furthermore I recommend VLC media player. Its a freeware player that can play the most audio and video files. Its freeware! :)

  • Garbled Screen & not consistent colours on Equium M40X-230

Hi, I have a M40X-230, a couple weeks ago I started to see a garbled screen where the colours were not consistent and the screen looked as if it was vertically chopped in 3 and all three parts were blending in and out of each other.
This lasted about 10-15 minutes and it persisted through reboot. However, this would not happen everytime the machine was used. After another week or so when the machine was started even the Toshiba splash screen is broken up as described above, this persists when in BIOS config (hit F12 at startup).
The machine is able to boot in safe mode but the same problem occurs and when an external monitor is attached the problem is seen on the attached screen as well.
Has anyone seen this before? Any advice, I am thinking it is my graphics adapter or maybe the LCD but really not certain.

    Hi mate,
this sounds cleary like a hardware malfunction. If you have already the symptoms at the toshiba logo, then I would recommend you to contact urgently a ASP for a hardware checkup because this error cannot be resolved with an bios/software update.
Check this link for the nearest availabel ASP in your country:

  • Is this a video card problem on my Equium M40x-230?

I've come to turn on my laptop one morning and I get this nice screen:
    http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4330/image0026d.jpg
Something hardware related is up, im sure of it. Funnily enough I can still use the laptop with a external screen plugged in.
    Any suggestions?

    > I can still use the laptop with a external screen plugged in.
Then it sounds like an internal display failure.
But do you have this issue only on Windows or on BIOS too?
I think you should go to the nearest authorized service provider. The technicians can order a new internal display and exchange it for.
On the Toshiba website you can search for the nearest:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Find an authorized service provider

  • Frequent WLan disconnections on Equium M40X-230

My laptop suffers frequent disconnections from the internet and it is getting very annoying. Situation is the laptop connects wirelessly to the net via a Belkin router. The router is working ok, and I use Aol for ISP.
Our second laptop, also a Toshiba but a Sattelite A30-203 does not suffer the problems despite using the same router.
Both laptops have service pack 2 on and the M40 is mobile centrino whilst the Sattelite has a wireless adaptor card installed (also Belkin).
If I watch the connection speed it varies between 54mbps and 1mbps and still says that the signal strength is excellent no matter what the speed is.Does this mean the problem lies with the laptop or its settings, or does it need chipset drivers to be upgraded?
Any help would be appreciated as the slow performance especially when loading pages on the net is driving me daft.

    Hi
You should know that there are different WLan standards which supports different properties.
The standards are 802.11 A, B or G. At this time the wireless 802.11 G standard supports the fastest connection.
The best combination is the using of the router and Wlan card which supports the same standard.
You have suggested that the Satellite A30 uses the Belkin WLan adapter. I assume there is the best compatibility between Belkin router and Belkin WLan card. Therefore you will get the best performance.
However, on your Equium you should check the WLan card properties. There you should find some options which could increases the card and connectivity performance.
Important: The power saving option should be disabled in the card properties. Try also to set the WLan range to the highest level.
Additionally its advisable checking the WLan card driver updates. If you use a Intel WLan card check the Intel page for updates.

  • Equium M40X: System information and devices issue.

I have just purchased a Equium M40X and done a complete new install with Windows XP Pro.. I saved the drivers from the original software loaded and all have loaded sucessfully apart from a PCI driver. I went to Sys information and problem devices and this is what it came up with..PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8034&SUBSYS_FF031179&REV_00\4&AD1 B67F&0&24F0 Can anyone enlighten me as to what this could be as it is driving me nuts.
    many thanks

Hi, according to http://www.pcidatabase.com/vendor_details.php?id=308 PCI Vendor 104C belongs to Texas Instruments. Although DEV 8034 isn't listed I am certain this is the firewire port (OHCI-Lynx IEEE 1394 Controller) since it is in the rage of 0x8000. As for fixing your problem I have no idea you could try deleting the PCI entry and let XP re-detect hardware again. If that doesn't work maybe a driver update from TI perhaps??

  • Equium M40x-149 - Icons on desktop apeared bigger

Hi there, I hope someone can help me.
I booted up my laptop today and the icons on the desktop appeared bigger. I right clicked on the desktop then went to properties-settings and noticed that the highest resolution I could get was 1024x768, but when I checked the spec of my computer online, I found that it should by as high as 1280x800.
My laptop is an Equium M40x-149. The slider only goes from 800x600 to 1024x768 there is no inbetween.
I have tried system restore but to no avail.
    Help please

    Hi
This sounds like that the display driver should be updated. Please check the Toshiba page for an update:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Before you install the newest version you should remove the old one first. Then restart the notebook and now install the newest version.
Normally if the display driver is installed correctly you should be able to choose the higher screen resolution.

  • Equium M40X - Can not open IE7 or sent email

I am using WXP home SP3 and the latest Atheros AR5005GS Wireless Network Adapter on my Equium M40X, and have no problem with creating wireless
    connections .
But when I connected on to my Wi-Fi, and try to open IE7 or sent email from my office 2007 outlook the *"Connect To"* window appears but as it only as my dial up connections are displayed I cannot open my IE7 etc, however I can connect to my firefox browser as it not the default
As I need to use both my dial-up & wifi can anyone help me sort out as to why I am having this problem.

    Hi!
This is strange but have you installed all updates for your Windows?
Maybe you should reinstall the notebook with the Toshiba recovery disk or you have a virus or something else on your computer. Update your antivirus program and let it scan for viruses.

  • Equium M40x screen: warranty question

    Hi,
I've only had my Equium M40x for a week or so and there is a very small fly that has managed to crawl under the display and die in the middle of the screen. It's not huge but it's very annoying, especially because I haven't been using it outside and I've only had it for such a short period of time.
Is this sort of thing covered under waranty? Any help appreciated.
[Edited by: admin on 17-Jul-05 20:11]

    Hi Kevin,
I very much doubt if this will be covered by your warranty, since this is not a component malfunction or failure.
I would recommend contacting your original supplier and explaining the situation to them as a first course of action. They may well be happy to exchange the notebook for you.
Failing that, call you nearest Toshiba Service Agent and ask them to quote you for removing the dead insect. Obviously this can only be done by an authorised repairer or you will invalidate your warranty.
    Best of luck

  • Equium M40X-149: Wrong Battery inserted

Very occasionally I get the above message on boot up. It's not a serious problem because I just switch off and it reboots OK.
I have ckecked BIOS upgrades but my machine is at the most current level.
    Any ideas?

    Hello Bob
I really dont know what happen in your case but I dont believe that there can be some serious issue like burning or something. I have also read about this issue and it was fixed with Battery Checker (V1.5.1M).
I really dont understood what you want to say with Toshiba have been remarkably quiet during this time!. The fact is that there are no similar claims for Equium M40x. Please contact Toshiba service partners in your country and ask for help. The addresses you can find under http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_gaspLocator.jsp?pf=true
    Bye and good luck!

I have an iphone 4s that is having display issues. If I turn the phone on, it vibrates to acknowledge it successfully turned on but the screen stays solid black. I can plug the phone into my computer and itunes will recognize the phone as well. However, itunes can not do anything with the phone because the phone is locked and I can not unlock the phone because the screen is black.
    >CURVEBALL!!!<
The screen does work though! Through trial and error along side a little troubleshooting, I was able to figure out that the screen will cut on after the phone dies completely. The phone has to die completely with no battery power left. Then if I plug the phone into a charge and wait a while for it to charge, the phone will turn on like nothing was ever even wrong with it. I charge the phone up to like 30% and turn it off then bam the phone turns on but the screen is solid black again.
I am currently in the process of waiting for the phone to die and when I turn the phone back on I am going to completely remove the auto-lock and lock code off of the phone for the time being.
    Any other suggestions? Please help!

Sounds like the device was dropped at some point and damaged as a result.
Take it to Apple for evaluation and a replacement.

  • Display issue on brand new 2014 X1 Carbon Touch

So I was about to start raving about my X1C that I just received. Loving the display, the keyboard, build quality, etc. I had no gripes and was just browsing away when suddenly the screen did the full glitch. I recognize this as what happens when something's messed with the motherboard/display adapter. So I gave it a reset. All was normal and then it happened again. I was able to replicate it 3-4 times and it keeps happening. I never dropped it or anything. It was always just stationary.
I can't believe this. I had problems with the first gen non-touch and touch. I was hoping by now they have improved.

  • Display Issues with mini (Mid 2010) and LG L246WP

I recently purchased a new mini (Mid 2010 base model) and planned to use it with my 24" LG L246WP monitor, which is about 3 years old. The monitor has VGA, component, and HDMI inputs.
I used an HDMI-to-HDMI cable to connect the mini directly to the monitor, and the output is completely messed up. The mini recognized the monitor (titling the System Preferences > Display dialog with 'L246WP') and set it to the monitor's native resolution of 1920x1200, but on the monitor the image is cropped to what looks like a 4:3 aspect ratio and with part of the image shifted up and left so I cannot view the top menu bar or the left hand side of the desktop. The monitor's on-screen display shows 1080p in this mode.
The Display dialog also gives me an option for 1080p. I can select this and use the Underscan slider to resize the desktop output to fit on the screen, but it is still shifted left and must be resized smaller than the available display space (plus the total image is only 1080 pixels, not using the monitor's full native screen). In this mode, 1080p also shows on the monitor's on-screen display.
I tried 1024x768 to see if I could get a properly-positioned image, but the desktop was shifted just like in the 1920x1200 case and the monitor's on-screen display status still reported 1080p.
The monitor has a menu setting under an HDMI heading with "Video" and "PC" options, but changing this selection does not make a difference.
Since the monitor came out before HDMI was as widespread as it is today, it came with a DVI-to-HDMI cable, so I also tried using that cable with the HDMI-to-DVI adapter that came with the mini, but this did not make a difference either.
To prove it wasn't the HDMI cable, I connected the mini to my Samsung 6300 series 40" LED HDTV and with some tweaking of the Underscan slider the displayed image filled the screen perfectly.
I've searched the Internet and various forum threads (i.e. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1167222&page=63) seem to indicate this monitor can send a corrupted EDID that causes issues, especially with nVidia graphics drivers. On Windows you can use registry or driver hacks to override the EDID with the correct values, but on OS X this doesn't seem possible (I was hoping for a Terminal one-liner but it seems this doesn't exist). I have seen some mentions of the shareware SwitchResX (http://www.madrau.com), which looks like it gives you the option to override resolution settings, but I haven't tried this yet.
It also appears to me that the monitor is always interpreting the signal (or the mini is always sending the signal) as 1080p, even if I've set 1920x1200 in the Display dialog. I don't know if this is a defect in the monitor where it always assumes the HDMI input is a 1080p source (previous I used it with an Xbox 360 with no issues but that was 1080p HDMI), or if is a bug in the graphics drivers (or at least a lack of flexibility / miscommunication to the user trying to handle a corrupt EDID).
I asked my local Genius Bar for advice today (without bringing any hardware in) but was not told anything I didn't already know.
I'm trying to determine the best way to work through this issue. *My questions are:*
Would it make any difference if I used a Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter (and then my DVI-to-HDMI cable to the monitor's HDMI input)?
What about a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter? In the past I used a 12" Powerbook (via a mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter) with this monitor and had no display issues like this, but I'd prefer to stick with a digital connection on my brand new mini.
Is SwitchResX the only practical way in OS X to override a corrupt EDID and force the mini to output a certain resolution?
Besides the various adapters and SwitchResX, is there anything else I should try before buying a new monitor?

    Hello EPWilson4984.
I have been experiencing the same issues you described. Connecting my brand new Mac Mini to my Westinghouse 24”monitor (L2410NM,  1920x1200 pixel resolution) produces a very fuzzy and washed out image quality. The Mac recognizes the monitor and applies the right resolution (1920x1200), but it looks just awful. The EDID info is definitely not right.
Now, I tried your suggestion (DVI-to-HDMI), and similar suggestions from other threads, but nothing works. Nothing seems to work at all.
The main input for the monitor is HDMI, so whatever cable I use, in the end always has to connect to the monitor via HDMI. I tried all these combinations with zero success:
Mac mini -> HDMI cable -> monitor (result: fuzzy and blurry image)
Mac mini -> displayport –HDMI adapter-> HDMI cable -> monitor (result: fuzzy and blurry image)
Mac mini  -> displayport –DVI adapter-> DVI-to-HDMI cable -> monitor (result: it gives me a blank screen, no image at all)
I’m running out of options. Don’t know what to do. The 24” monitor produces beautiful, crisp images when hooked to my Windows 7 PC. It looks horrible when connected to my brand new Mac Mini.
Any alternatives you may have come across? Please let me know, thank you.
