Equium M50-164: Question about Fan usage & battery timer

Hi !!
Just got hold of my equium m50-164 laptop today and I wanted to clarify a few issues
firstly,
I flashed my bios with the latest version and upon the reboot the fan kicked in at full power and didn't turn off until i put the laptop into standby mode, this seemed to of rectified the problem but the fan seems to be kicking in a lot more than compared to before, luckily the fan isn't kicking into 100% speed but more like 15% - 20% every 30 secs or a minute then goes into silent mode, the fan hasn't hit 100% unless i do a reboot :),
I know the fan will speed faster based on the cpu usage etc (thermal) but is this normal? I spoke to support and they wanted me to have an instant replacement but I said I would wait a few days to see if it would calm down :)
and finally looking at the power meter and other software tools there seems to be no battery calibration, with previous laptops i noticed that numerical calculations are made based on battery usage and time left [i.e a timer] but with this laptop i kind find a timer - i would of thought tha every laptop has this facility nowadays !
any advice would be helpful
cheers

Hi
Please dont be mad on me but I really dont understood why your first step is BIOS update. The unit is delivered with actual BIOS and it is really not necessary to make it before you notice some problems. I just hope that you have enough experience with it because I have read a few postings on this forum about BIOS damage while BIOS update and to make it good again costs a lot of money.
Your BIOS is updated and there are new values that should be used by Power saver utility (responsible for cooling fan monitoring). I recommend you to remove preinstalled power saver, restart the unit and install it again. I hope that the result will be better.
Battery calibration I dont know what you want exactly but the battery usage can be control by power saver tool. On the task bar there is symbol for power saver and if you move the mouse pointer on it the battery capacity and left time will be shown.

  • Equium M50-164: IE not displaying pages correctly

    I have a Toshiba new Equium M50-164, but it will not display my internet page correctly at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/lorne.anderson/Bridge/
    It should look like this:
    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/lorne.anderson/NormalView.gif
    with the Bridge anaylser logo in the header but on my Toshiba it looks like this:
    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/lorne.anderson/ToshibaView.gif
    I have 4 other computers that all display it correctly (running XP,2000,98SE) and several friends say they can see it OK. If I look at the unlying html code via right click and view source in IE the bit that displays the logo should read:
    "align="left"></p>
    </td>
    <td width="610" align="center" height="65"><a href="../index.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="Images/Bridge%20Analyser.gif" width="311" height="57" align="left" alt="Opens my software home page to see more programs">

    <font face="Arial Rounded MT Bold" color="#000080">
    <a href="../index.html">
    but on the Toshiba view source displays:
    "align="left"></p>
    </td>
    <td width="610" align="center" height="65"><a href="../index.html" target="_blank">
    </a>
    <font face="Arial Rounded MT Bold" color="#000080">
    <a href="../index.html">
    Note the 2 blank line where the code to show the logo should be. If I open the page from files on my hard disk it display correctly so my guess is that Toshiba have done something to overide default IE security settings but I can't see what. How can I get IE on my Toshiba to work the way Microsoft designed it to work?
    Just as a check, can anyone using this forum read the page correctly or do you also get the missing logo?

    Out of curiosity are you running any toolbars, add-ons or content filtering for IE?? As you pointed out the source code isn't the same as the original it's been altered and since the <IMG> html tag is missing that would explain why Internet Explorer isn't loading the image.
    I can't see anything particularly wrong with the code however your filename does have a space in it "%20" and might be triggering some kind of content filtering.
    As a suggestion rename the image file removing the space then update your html page and try again.

  • Equium M50-164 - Touchpad problem if AC/DC adaptor is connected

    Hi
    Can anyone help? My Toshiba Equium M50-164 has an intermittent problem with the touchpad. Sometimes its fine, other times the cursor will jump around the screen uncontrollably then just lock up, the problem goes away when I remove the power cable and returns when it is reconnected.
    Other times it is fine with the power cable connected, this suggests possibly the power supply is causing a problem to me, but I was hoping someone with more experience could give me some advice.
    Thanks in advance.
    lbansal

    Hi
    Are you using an original Toshiba AC/DC adaptor or one from a 3rd party manufacture?
    Its not easy to say what the reason is, it could be a problem of AC/DC adaptor or mainboard.
    I think the best way is you contact the nearest authorized service provider. Go to them with the notebook and AC/DC adaptor and ask a technician for help. They can check the notebook and hardware.
    Good luck! :)

  • Recommends memory for Equium M50-164 does not fit

    I have the Equium M50-164 in its original configuration.
    I wanted to add more memory so, on the recommendation of the Toshiba Product Support page, I purchased the Toshiba PA3411S-2M1G memory module (from eBuyer).
    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/jsp/individualOptions.do?service=UK&OPTION_ID=118626&t oshibaShop=true&selCategory=4700
    On attempting to fit the memory module into my machine, I found that it does not fit! The plastic 'divider' between the two contacts in the laptop does not match the position of the notch between the two sets of pins on the memory module.
    Tosh recommends Part Number: PA3411S-2M1G 1024MB (1GB) Memory PC2-4300 DDR2 (533MHz)
    The memory that arrived has PA3411S-2M1G 1024MB (1GB) Memory PC2-4200 DDR2 (533MHz) on the box.
    Someone in the forums says PC2700 PA3313U-2M1G is the part number.
    The manual that came with the M50 states that PC2700 memory is required.
    Does anyone know the correct part number, or a suitable alternative by a different manufacturer?
    I'm quite annoyed, as the support helpline suggested I phone their Sales department! So they can sell me more incorrect memory modules?!? Now looking forward to the running the returns gauntlet with eBuyer...
    Cheers,
    Andy

    Hi there,
    I believe its annoying since they told you the wrong information. I wish you good luck for returning the memory module, maybe you can also try to sell it to another ebayer.
    Regarding your memory: I agree with Ghost UK, you have to use DDR1 memory and not DDR2.
    Dont forget to assign some reward points to GhostUK, I think he would appreciate it. ;)
    Cheers guys

  • Question about fan control MSI MPower

    Hi, Cosimo from Italy, sorry for my bad english.
    I have a question about fan control with the MSI MPower.
    The MPower site says: All 4-pin PWM fan connector Onboard
    But the manual says: SYSFAN1-4 pin 4 No Use
    My question is: the Control Center Fan Utility support the fan connect SYSFAN1-4 3 Pin voltage controled or 4 Pin pulse width controled or both?
    Thanks Cosimo.

    The fans will run as per your percentage setting in the BIOS.
    I can't find the percentage setting in BIOS...

  • Equium M50-164 - spare battery

    I have the M50-164 - is it possible to buy a replacement battery pack anywhere? I haven't found anything at all on the Tosh site, or on the third party vendor sites.
    Ideally I'd like a long-life battery as I often work on-the-go.
    Andy

    Hi
    If you want you can order the compatible battery from the Toshiba service partner. As far as I know the part number is PA3399U-1B*S
    Please note tat you should use always a compatible battery because a wrong battery can damage the unit.

  • Question about using new battery in old Powerbook

    I have a pre-intel Powerbook G4, and the battery is pretty much toast (lasts about 15 minutes now). I have ordered a new battery for it, and I have this question about using it:
    Am I smarter to keep the new strong battery out of the PB most days (as I usually work with it plugged in at home) and just pop it in when I know I will be out surfing on batteries? Or is it just as good living in my laptop 24/7 and only occasionally being called upon to do its job?
    Current bad Battery Information below:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1144
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1115
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12387
    Cycle Count: 281
    thanks folks, Shereen

    Hi, Shereen. Every Powerbook battery wants to be used — drained and then recharged — at least every couple of weeks. If you've always used your Powerbook on AC power nearly all the time, and not followed that pattern of discharging and recharging the battery every week or two, it's possible that your use habits have shortened the lifespan and prematurely diminished the capacity of your old battery. Of course it's also possible that your battery is merely old, as a battery's capacity also diminishes with age regardless of how it's used. You didn't say how old the battery is in years, so this may or may not be an issue. I mention it only because it can be an issue.
    For general information on handling a battery for the longest possible lifespan, see this article. My advice on the basis of that article and long experience reading these forums is that it would be OK to do as you propose, but I doubt that you'd derive any significant benefit from it. You would still want to be sure of putting the new battery through a charge/discharge cycle every week or two, even if you didn't have a reason to use the Powerbook away from home or your desk, because sitting unused outside the computer is just as bad for a battery as sitting unused inside it. And you should never remove the battery from your computer when it's completely or almost completely discharged and let it sit that way any longer than a day or two.

  • Equium M50-164: Not shuting down

    I have a M50-164 and after i have been on the web for a couple of hours i try to shut the laptop down (E.G. START>TURN OFF COMPUTER>SHUT DOWN)
    it will not work, only after i have tried about 3 times using the same process as above then it will work, or sometimes that will still not work at all i then have to turn it off by the power switch....any ideas???
    If anybody can help please let me know.
    Thanks

    Hi Nick,
    It is not easy to say why your notebook will not power off. Obviously there is some application or process running which does not respond to the request to close and this will cause the shutdown process to stall.
    You can check for active applications in Task Manager before issuing the shutdown and try to close any that are still running (noting any that hang), and likewise you could try the same with the system processes (check here for anything unusual which may have popped up while your were surfing.)

  • Equium M50-216 - Question regarding new installation

    Hi there,
    Recently rescued an Equium M50 laptop from my flat mate. Was in a bit of disrepair. she said i could have it as couldn't get onto the internet and it appears to be missing some vital files.
    Managed to get the wireless working again and removed some of the rubbish that was on it, but there are some bigger issues for instance. Anything USB I plug into it will not install as there are no drivers on the HDD.
    I think it probably needs to be formatted and have Windows XP Home Edition reinstalled but I don't have any disks for it and don't want to spend hundreds buying new software for it. Please let me know what my best options are.
    best regards
    Ed

    Hi there,
    I have updated windows fully, although there are 7 updates that fail to install. all of them related to Windows Net Framework. Have removed previous installations and tried again to no avail.
    Plug and play devices that should install automatically do not install. I have two USB sticks that install automatically (plug and play) on several computers and laptops but both fail to install on this laptop.
    When asked to install i have a choice of automatic or choosing a destination myself, i choose Auto.
    When that fails i choose 'from a specific location' which also fails, and then i choose the option 'Don't search. I will choose the driver to install'.... in this part there are no drivers to choose from. its like the driver folder has been wiped.
    Anyone ever had this problem?
    Cheers

  • Question about CPU usage for video playback

    I've asked a related question already on the Safari forum, but would like some clarification, please.
    The speed of this iMac is 400 MHZ and whenever I go to YouTube or almost any other site that requires video I see that the CPU usage can peak way up at 80% or more. I have Flash 9 installed which has a minimum of 500 MHZ, so I get pretty choppy video, but that's not the issue here. I can live with that. I keep any other applications closed. I'm often running a small fan over the top of the iMac to help vent the buildup of heat. I can monitor the temperature at the Hard Drive and I suppose that gives me an idea, of sorts, about general temperature conditions inside.
    The answer I got was that this kind of CPU usage could be detrimental to the processor as it builds up excessive heat and to keep this kind of video to a minimum.
    My question is can anyone roughly suggest what a maximum time on YouTube, for example, would be, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, is 10 minutes too long? I have plenty of RAM at 768. Some guidelines?
    Thanks.

    Hey WZZZ,
    Thanks for the star and kind words.
    I'm the de facto Mac guy at my kids' school and we have around 25 iMac Slot Loaders working there. You can imagine they get abused quite a bit. There are 10 running Garage Band in the Music Department. That puts a tremendous strain on the CPU and I'm actually surprised that they run it so well. My son had a 600 iMac running GarageBand, he was complaining that it was getting jumpy and when I looked at it he was running 10 unlocked tracks simultaneously! So now he has an eMac G4 800 and that of course runs a lot better.
    So to sum up, with all the abuse of those machines in terms of the CPUs the problems I have with them have nothing to do with that. The problems have more to do with parts of the OS that they toss, headphone jacks abused, CDs jammed in the slots, and the like.
    A couple of other related things. I've got Hardware Monitor, demo, installed and I think it reported it could only find the hard drive sensor, if I'm not mistaken - nothing else on this Mac with a sensor. Is that right?
    I see references to CPU sensors on 400 iMacs but on the 400 I have here for repair Temperature Monitor reports no sensors. Perhaps there were different versions of the 400.
    But very good to hear that the fan is a good idea for CRT related things. Should I keep the fan running-mostly for that hard core CRT stuff- even if the computer is sleeping and the room temp. is only around 62-64 F.? (We need to put on warm clothes to sit in front of this thing now, but worth it to keep this old machine happy).
    On the one I did the fan pushed the airflow in the direction of the passive flow of the iMac - in at the bottom and out the grill by the handle.
    One more question, more out of curiosity than anything else: If I move this small clip-on fan close to the case - right now it's about 3 feet away and the image is stable - the screen begins to flicker and flutter quite a lot. My theory is that that's happening not necessarily because of electro-magnetic interference from the fan motor, but rather, because the back of the tube is getting cooled unevenly. What do you think?
    Well the classic failures that I see in the iMac are in this order:
    1) Dielectric breakdown of the flyback transformers internal insulation. This is heat/age related and a common problem with CRTs in general.
    2) Breakdown of high voltage electolytic capacitors and regular high voltage capacitors on the neck board and PAV supply.
    3) Solder problems with the flyback itself. This is diagnosed by the upside down boot technique.
    I used to repair these problems but now it's easier for me to swap the Firewire boards into working 350s. I've got 12 of those in the basement currently.

  • Question about broadband usage

    Hello
    I recently joined up to BT Total Broadband option 1 and was wondering if someone could help clarify some things on the usage of 10GB and subsequent charges if you exceed.
    Is the "per month" based on a calendar month or the billing month?
    The reason I ask is because they recently sent me two emails:
    One on 1st Sept saying: "We thought you'd like to know that, so far in August, you've used more than 7GB of your 10GB monthly usage allowance for your BT Total Broadband Option 1 service."
    Then one on 4th Sept saying: "We thought you'd like to know that, so far in September, you've used more than 7GB of your 10GB monthly usage allowance for your BT Total Broadband Option 1 service."
    This is slightly confusing. My billing date is the 23rd of the month. Does this mean that as of 4th Sept I had used over 7GB of my usage since 23rd Aug until 22nd Sept?
    I've not had any emails from BT since but their fair usage policy says "If you exceed your monthly usage allowance your service won't stop working; advisory emails will be sent to your BT primary email address if you reach 80 per cent of your usage allowance each month and further notification if you then exceed your allowance in a particular month."
    Their emails said "over 7GB" which isn't necessarily 80% but is this what they mean? I've not had any emails about exceeding my limit but the above from their policy seems to suggest I should. I expect if I'd used over 7GB since 23rd Aug to 1st Sept, I've probably exceeded the 10GB allowance by now!
    Can anyone clarify how it all works?
    Also, if I decided to upgrade to option 2, do they start my 18 month contract all over again?!
    Many thanks!
    Allan

    the usage period is calendar monthly nothing to do with renewal dates

  • Equium L10-300 - Question about BIOS password

    Hey all hope you can help a new user please.
    Had a customer bring in an Equium L10-300 notebook. Somehow a password has been put on the BIOS and the boot up so I cannot do anything with it. I cannot boot from a CD and Ive tried a USB floppy, it looks at the floppy once and then just carries on to the password area. I was going to attempt a BIOS flash you see.
    Im guessing maybe taking the bios battery out might help? But not sure where it is or how to get to it. Any links to manuals etc would be nice. Ive read that some newer Toshibas have special security chips now that hold the passwords etc.
    Any help would be great thanks, really need to get this fixed.
    Mark

    Hello Mark
    If you have customer I presume you work for one authorized service. The fact is that every authorized service has exact description how to remove BIOS password on each notebook model.
    So if you are trying to remove BIOS password I cannot imagine you work for some baker. So much about your job.
    Other important thing is that BIOS removal procedure is kind of top secret information and cannot be theme for public discussion. This information cannot be posted here. This will be great help for all people who try to enter stolen notebooks. Do you agree with me?
    If your customer needs professional help send him to nearest Toshiba authorized service provider. They will know how to remove BIOS password.

  • Equium L20-198: Question about BIOS and s-video out

    I seem to be having two problems with this and that is when I put the bios password on above it on the screen is rubbish, scrammble symbols. Also it is supposd to come with s-video out but there is a black plastic in place its place

    Hello
    I know definitely that S-Video port is not available on every Equium L20 model. Please check the notebook specification although I think that your model should have S-Video port. Please contact your local dealer and talk with them about this.
    Your unit has valid warranty and if you think that there is some technical problem contact service partner and explain them the problem. Please dont make some BIOS update experiments if you are not familiar with this procedure.
