Equivalent to Band in a Box?

I'm looking for something to play backup tracks, so that I can solo over them, or practice melodies with backup. I've used Band in a Box in Windows before -- and that would be perfect. But, it is VERY pricy, and, I was hoping that Garage band would do something similar.
Does anyone know if it is possible to input a set of chord progressions, style of music, etc, and have garage band play backup for me?
Let Me know!

If you look at http://www.pgmusic.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB1&lang=english , they are looking for Biand in a box for OSX beta testers. So I guess it will be avaialable in a near future.

I am trying to import standard midi file that I created in Band in a Box into Logic Pro 9.  I can not get all the track to play with internal instrument sounds... only the piano track.  how can I get the others to play... drums, bass etc????   Help

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.

  • Exporting Band In A Box Midi drums to Logic

I am trying to export Band In A Box midi to Logic Pro. I did the export, then imported the midi into Logic and I could define reasonable instruments, except for the drums, which were totally garbled and the midi note assignments simply didn't match anyting expected. But, the exported midi file plays fine in the Quicktime player, so I decided to try the Quicktime Instruments profile. This seems to work, but it's VERY quirky, with instruments seeming to change inexplicably. For example, the acoustic bass turns into a piano. It just seems buggy. I've had the piano inexplicably change to a synth too. There doesn't seem to be a way to reset it to the piano instrument when this happens.
But, the better way may be to figure out how to map the drum sounds correctly into a regular Logic drum kit synth.
Anybody have any ideas how to solve this?
    Thanks.

make sure the midi track you are going to import to has the 'no transpose' switched checked. Otherwise, Logic will sometimes try to transpose according to the chords in a song...
I'm not clear why this still happens sometimes. But turning the no transpose switch on should work. Make sure your using a GM drum instrument. All the ones that come in EXP are GM.

  • Can I use Logic ESX 24 sounds for Band In A Box?

    Hi,
This is probably a Band In A Box question - however - it does have to deal with Logic. Perhaps someone can show me where to look online - or just answer the question:
Do you know if there is a way to use Logic ESX 24 sounds in place of the dinky sounds that come with Band In A Box?
    Thanks!

hear is another thought. could you use the staff in GB to position the chords as you want them? you would not have to play them. you can move the on the staff so that they play the note you wanted.
i don't know. i was just trying to give you some suggestions. biab seems really cool, and if it does what you need then that is awesome, but i don't think you will get exs24 instruments into it. you might be able to, but for the time it will take you you probably could just play the chords.
will logic's score not let you enter in the desired chords? i do not use logic's score, but it seems like you could just create an arrangement by dragging notes/chords to the desired position without playing a note.

  • I overhauled Band-in-a-Box and Home Concert Extreme

I have posted a major overhaul of Band in a Box
    http://web.me.com/newdotmacuser/CurtisRushBell/SoftwareInnovations/Entries/2000/8/20Band-in-a-Box.html
    and
    Home Concert Extreme
    http://web.me.com/newdotmacuser/CurtisRushBell/SoftwareInnovations/Entries/2010/7/12_7_Home_ConcertExtreme.html
These innovations have DRASTICALLY improved both softwares immensely.
Now if I could only get the Gods to look down beneath their feet...

Let me add that I didn't want to split hairs, it's just that "General Midi" is a technical term, it means (among other things) that you have a set of 128 instruments that are specified in a standard. That's the reason why you can click on a midi file in your web browser or open it with QT Player, and it will sound approximately like the creator wanted it to sound - the drum track won't play on a piano etc.
On the Mac, Quicktime provides this set of instruments. It's not very great sounds, but it's okay, and it could have been easily integrated into GB, I have no idea why they didn't. If you have SoundFontSynth, which allows you to use banks of soundfonts, you can select the Quicktime GM instruments for your GB tracks.

  • Can I use Logic sounds in Band In A Box?

Just bought Band In A Box. The sounds are - so-so.
Is there an easy way to use Logic sounds with it?
I called PG Music - they don't know Logic well... so I'm posting here.
    Thanks!

I Don't this this is possible..
How about going the other way around? I have both Logic and BITB, and exported MIDI from BITB and brought that into Logic, then tweaked from there to get good sounding instruments.
You could create a Logic song with your favorite instruments all set up, then import the Midi.. Should only take a few minutes to get a new arrangment up and running once it was done initially.

  • Band in a box settings!

I think I figured out how to route biab through Logic. Set the output of BIAB to biab virtual output. Then in Logic, in the environment, route the physical input of BIAB VO to a channel splitter. Each channel then can be routed to an audio object with the appropriate voice (as specified in BIAB). If you don't do it this way all the midi is routed to one audio instrument and the effect is all of the biab output being played by one instrument. One can then demix this channel and but this is more cumbersome.
The other option is to export the midi from BIAB but I find this more difficult if I am doing real-time playing.
    Hope this helps.
    macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

With trial and error, I think I've answered my own question, but I'll leave it open, in case someone can explain the reasoning behind it. First, I trashed the preferences for Garageband, Firewire Solo, and Audi Midi Setup -- just to start with a clean slate.I set System Preferences/Sound/Input to Firewire Solo, and System Preferences/Sound/Output to Internal Speakers/Built-In Output -- and I made sure both were highlighted. For AMS, I set default input as Firewire Solo, and default output and system output as Built-In Output. And on Garageband's Audi Midi Preferences, I set both to System Setting (where, in hovering the mouse over Input and Output, I saw, respectively, that it had picked up the Firewire Solo as the inout device and the computer's speakers as the output.
That seems to have done the trick. The only problems I'm having is that Garageband keeps returning me a "feedback detected error," no matter how low the input and output volumes are set. Also, somewhat paradoxically, the volume is relatively low on the output, no matter how I set the Firewire Solo device, the guitar, and the computer's speakers. But it's eminently passable, especially for purposes of practicing.
I've decided not to bother trying to record directly into Band-in-a-Box. I see it's very easy simply to save any BIAB tune as a MIDI file, and then drop it into Garageband. GB automatically separates it into tracks, and it even gives a better sound quality.
But if anyone can parse this for me, and let me know if there are better ways of manipulating the sound inputs, I'd be obliged.

  • Using Band-in-a-Box with GarageBand

Does anyone out there use Band-in-a-Box with GarageBand?
If so, I would have several questions. BinB is a great program ... particularly for setting up chord progressions. And, completely compatible with G/B.
    Used it many times w G/B 2. But running into a few difficulties w G/B '09 (or, 5), whatever.
    Thanks.

What's the difficulties? Creating a midi file in BiaB and dropping it into GB should work fine!

  • Logic sounds into Band In a Box

Anyhow - I'd love to know how to get Logic sounds to work withing BIAB.
Found this thread on the internet:
    http://wordpress.37hz.net/?p=347
Does this thread sound right? I downloaded the guy's Logic file - can't get it to work. I don't understand the Environment well enough.

    Misterioso:
All you need to do is follow the instructions on the 37Hz blog post through Step 4. For each track you set up, make sure you set the MIDI channel (in the Track Parameter box in the Inspector) to match the corresponding channel in the BIAB MIDI setup.
Then forget about all that Environment stuff.
Follow Fred B's suggestion to enable Multiplayer Recording in Logic: Switch on the File > Project Settings > Recording > “Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording” option.
Then click the "R" button on each Logic track so that it glows red.
If it all goes correctly, you should be able to play a BIAB song and hear the instruments you selected in Logic.
Only problem I had was that this pushed the CPU pretty hard -- evidently a common issue when you use software instruments in Live Mode. I was getting dropouts and clicks. I solved this by switching from EXS instruments on each track to corresponding GarageBand instruments, which use less CPU power. Still sounds a lot better than the QuickTime instruments you are normally stuck with in BIAB.
Easier than it sounds. Give it a try. Good luck.

  • Logic sync to Band in a Box ?

Has anyone synchronized Logics transport to BIAB? According to PG Music, Biab transmits MTC over an IAC Bus. I have had success with logics exs playing incoming midi notes from biab but I don't see any evidence of MTC anywhere.

I have the biab sync box enabled and I have also tried a few logic sync preferences which include automatically detecting incoming MTC and MTC frame rate.
I am beginning to think the IAC bus will not allow MTC transmission. But if anyone has successfully achieved Logic and BIAB sync on a single Mac I would like to know .

  • Choosing MacBookPro for garage band and music applications.

    Hi to all,
    this is my 1st post
I'm looking to buy my first mac: the MacBook Pro.
With this computer I would like to install some music software (the main are Garageband, Finale and Band in a box) and connect my digital piano with an external fire-wire sound card.
    I'm thinking for this configuration:
    +13-inch: 2.7 GHz+
    +2.7GHz dual-core+
    +Intel Core i7+
    +4GB 1333MHz+
    +500GB 5400-rpm1+
    +Intel HD Graphics 3000+
Is it good or is it too slow?
Is the 13-inch display too small?
What configuration do you recommend me?
    Thank-you very much!

a bigger screen is ALWAYS nice, but I think you'll be fine with that configuration.
my only suggestion would be to keep an extra (equivalent) of around $100 for the future... if you record a lot of audio tracks you may find the slow laptop HD is the bottleneck. this is easily taken care of with a fast FireWire hard drive.

  • Small boxes appear in database field..?

Help... can someone please explain to me how or what the ascii equivalent would be of small boxes...I would like to do a replace of these boxes. These little boxes are the size of regular characters..Help please, Opal

Sorry about that, I apparently forgot to attach the file; have done so now.
The method I'm using for creating outlines is simply to use the "Create Outlines" command under the Type menu within InDesign. Then I create my PDF files by using the Export command under the File menu and choosing the PDF/X1a option. 99% of the time I get perfect results, it's only when I try to make outline type that I encounter this problem. You'll clearly see the artifacts in question in the example attached.
I don't know whether or not the press would have printed these artifacts, as you suggest, since no printer has been willing to execute a file that shows any anomaly in the proof process. I can't say that I blame them.
Hopefully you will see what I'm talking about and can recommend a solution, though I like your idea of simply giving them a properly executed file and then telling them to get a life. It hasn't worked so far, as I unfortunately deal with a lot of Neanderthals around here, but I suppose it's worth putting forth again the next time this issue arises. It will.
By the way, no print house of my choosing is this far behind the curve, if at all. These cavemen are always printers who have long-standing relationships with my clients, and for whatever reason (generally lowest cost I'm sure), the clients think they hung the moon. We, of course, no otherwise, but it does it profit a designer to tell his client he or she is crazy for using a printer who is a decade behind the technology curve.
We cowboy up and seek solutions, eh?
