Hey so I've got this mac mini and i've had it for awhile buttt i need to clean it up some. What is the equivalent to a disk defrag on a windows for a mac? is there anything else i can buy or download that will help my computer say clean? if you have any ideas please let me know. thanks!

You do not really need to defrag Macs. Mac OS X self defrags unless you have a lot of really huge files. One of the easiest ways to defrag is to clone the HDD and then copy the clone back. Any really large files that were fragmented will have been defragged during the cloning.
As far utilities, there are a few. I like OnyX.
Hi.
I have a 1.5TB Firewire disk which has a lot of really huge files, most of them video files and EyeTV recordings between 1GB and 8GB in size. When there's less than 20GB free on the volume, it gets r.e.a.l.l.y s.l.o.w, to the extent that it can't keep up with live TV, and iMovie works like treacle. There's a lot of system activity when it's recording, which I'm sure is Mac OS X fiddling all the time with its "hot blocks".
OK, I know (before everyone points out) that the disk is really too full. But I don't need "hot blocks". It's not a system disk, there are no apps, no libraries on the disk. I don't have another 1.5TB disk to clone to. It sure feels like it needs defragging.
Any suggestions much appreciated

There is almost never a reason to defrag a Mac. Indeed, doing so can be a negative. Defrag is defrag regardless of the OS.
What you say above does not make much sense. Formatting and defraging are vastly different things. What is the exact wording of the message you refer to as "it tells me I have to reformat my drive to a particular format?"

  • Can't turn off Verbose Mode after running disk defrag in minimal environment using Drive Genius 3

New to posting on here. I'm using a
    Mid-2009 15in MacBook Pro
2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB memory
After running Disk Defrag in a minimal environment using Drive Genius 3 my MacBook Pro only starts up in Verbose Mode.
I've done my searching on how to turn verbose mode on and off on the web and it gets me nowhere.
    Using
         sudo nvram –p
in terminal shows that there is no " v" after " boot-args "
    Using
         sudo nvram boot-args=
to turn it off hasn't done anything.

I'm having the same issue but the solution suggested by prosoft doesn't work because that file des not exist.
Prosoft was able to help me.
First, FileVault is not reccomended and they are adding a FAQ to address that.  Next, they said to trash this file:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
and to restart.  It seemed to have worked for me.
If anyone has any other suggestions then I would be grateful.
    Many Thanks.

  • QUESTION ON DISK DEFRAGMENTING

Does my computer have to be turned on when I do the "Disk Defragmenting" Program? It is scheduled to do the feature on a certain time each month, however, I do not always have the computer turned on at that time.

That isn't related to Firefox support, but '''yes''' the PC has to be turned on to run scheduled tasks.

  • SAP Disk Defragment Tool

Hi Everyone! Is there a built in tool that SAP has that can do disk defragment? I've searched all over the place but unable to find anything that SAP has built in or what SAP recommends. At the moment the built in Microsoft tool is not working at a level which we would like. Any advice would be appreciated! thank you!

Connie let me explain you this:
Data fragmentation in Hard Disks is produced when data in sectors are writen and after some time are deleted, then the hard disk itself whenever you try to write information in the disk it will try to fill the empty spaces it finds starting from  first sectors and so on. Usually happens that a file uses more than 1 sector so if you have 3 free sectors between used sectors and you try to write a file that uses 4 sectors the electronics in the disk will fill those 3 free sectors and then the 4th sector will be writen somewhere else, this is call as disk fragmentation because the same file information is not next to each other. This is done by the disk or controller, not by SAP or Oracle.
Now we can tell that SAP has nothing to do with disk fragmentation because writing and deleting is done by hardware (with few exceptions) so you can use ANY software that you want to use for disk fragmentation. Be aware that disk fragmentations is important after thousands of hours. What is the percentage of fragmentation that you are so worry?
If you are in Windows then use the tools that comes with Windows as it is whell known that this are the best tools for defragmentation for NTFS or NTFS2.
The tool basically will move files in a way that they will be contiguous (in sectors) and it is supposed to improve performance but this is almost imperceptible so I wouldn´t worry much about this. If you want to improve performance then write here what is the problem you have and for sure you will get lots of info and answers.

  • New BIOS disables Disk Defragmenter: possible?

I was doing some updating this morning from the Lenovo driver site: simple stuff like Intel Display Audio; Intel Chip Support and TVantage Fingerprint Software. Nothing fancy, I'd surmise.
    But I also updated the BIOS to 6UET36WW [1.11 > 1.14]
Everything seems to be fine, expect that the Windows Defragmenter has stopped functioning all together! It's there, but no matter where I go to open it, there's no response.
I can't see how one action relates to the other, frankly, but these are the only changes I've made to the machine today. I can do a system restore, but I thought I'd bounce the query off the good people here first.

The SSD drive, in fact -although Disk Defrag appears to have worked since mid-March, when I got the machine.
Maybe that was an illusion; I can certainly accept that an SSD drive has no need for defragmentation.
Can any other techies confirm that that might be the case, please?

  • Task License Validation Error Message/ Automatic Scheduling for Disk Defrag is not working.

I saw where I could possibly ask you for answers to the problems that I am having with Windows 8.1 pro. First of all I noticed that my disk defragmentation task which was set on daily wasn't operating.  It indicated that the last time it ran all disks
for disk defrag was back on 4/20 and on the this morning of 4/26 there was the date 4/20 for all the disks.  I went into the Administrator Tools section of Control Panel and found Schedule Tasks.  When I opened Schedule Tasks I got the
error message that indicated a Task License Validation Error. It went on to read:The task XML contains a value which is incorrectly formatted or out of range.  This is my question...are the two related...the inoperative automatic maintenance of disk defrag
and this error message from task scheduler?  And how do I address each issue to solution.   Thank you very much.

  • HDD Protection - Check Disk / Defrag Problems

I believe the Toshiba HDD Protection utility has my hard drive write protected. I can't run a check disk (it cancels on its own) and I can't run a defrag. When I run check disk in repair mode, the error message specifically indicates the drive is write protected. Other attempts through other means indicates the drive is currently in use by another process.
I can boot in safe mode and the system responds. When logged in as a user the system is really slow. The system locks up when trying to disabled HDD Protection or responding to the pop-up that the head is temporarily moved to a safe position.

    Hi
Toshiba drivers and tools released for Win 8 or Win 8.1 are not fully comparable with the Toshiba software available for Win 7 OS.
Some drivers and tools which are available for Win 8 dont exist for Win 7 system.
For example; the Accelerometer Utilities or HDD Protection Utility were released especially for Win 8 / Win 8.1 system and are not available for Win 7.
But for Win 7 you will find the Toshiba VAP (value added package) and this package installs a range of important utilities which are essential component of Windows system and this VAP is required to make the other TOSHIBA original programs work properly.
Therefore you should install the VAP as first Toshiba tool to ensure that other software like HDD/SSD Alert Utility or PC Health Monitor

    Disk Defragmentation Utility is
I already have Disk Warrior, but is
    there something better

    thank you

I notice that my fans start up randomly and stop
and I may need to erase my Hard Drives eventually
    and start fresh <
No, they don't. The fans come on for specific reason and the only way to know is to have Activity Monitor or another Terminal window/app open.
The idea that defragmentation can solve anything is a holdover from the ancient days of 60meg hard drives. Disk Warrior is a directory rebuilder only, that's al it does, it does not defrag anything. The risk of something truly horrible happening while you are defragging is greater than the perceived benefits but you do this at your own risk. Be sure you have a battery UPS on your machine. The best way to defrag a system drive is to use a cloning tool, make a clone, erase the drive, and clone the clone back to the source of the clone.
Get on the Net and research defragmentation. Make your decision carefully. And then post your experiences for the rest of us.

  • Disk defragmenting utility software for tiger 10.4.7?

I am a new Mac owner. I just getting deeper in understanding my newly acquired MacBook.
The big question I have is "is there a defragmenting utility sismilar to the one in Windows XP in this operating system?
I don't seem to find a disk maintenance tool within the operating system
    trying to find some answers!

    I really don't know.
I do know that if you repair permissions after every install and update, and when things just don't feel right, things might get a little better.
    From Apple:
About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature
Learn about Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature. This document applies to Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4 or later.
Disk Utility lets you verify and repair disk and permissions issues. This document explains one of Disk Utility's features for Mac OS X disks, Repair Disk Permissions.
How does Disk Utility check file permissions?
Many things you install in Mac OS X are installed from package files (whose filename extension is ".pkg"). Each time something is installed from a package file, a "Bill of Materials" file (whose filename extension is ".bom") is stored in the package's receipt file, which is kept in /Library/Receipts/ . If you look in the Receipts folder, for example, you should see all kinds of files that end with .pkg, including some that were created when Mac OS X was installed (for example, BaseSystem.pkg). Don't worry, these files don't take up much disk space and you shouldn't put them in the Trash.
Each of those ".bom" files contains a list of the files installed by that package, and the proper permissions for each file.
When you use Disk Utility to verify or repair disk permissions, it reviews each of the .bom files in /Library/Receipts/ and compares its list to the actual permissions on each file listed. If the permissions differ, Disk Utility reports the difference (and corrects them if you use the Repair feature).
Does Disk Utility check permissions on all files?
Files that aren't installed as part of an Apple-originated installer package are not listed in a receipt and therefore are not checked. For example, if you install an application using a non-Apple installer application, or by copying it from a disk image, network volume, or other disk instead of installing it via Installer, a receipt file isn't created. This is normal. Some applications are just designed to be installed like that.
Also, certain files whose permissions can be changed during normal usage without affecting their function are intentionally not checked.
Tip: If you remove receipts from /Library/Receipts/, the files installed by those packages cannot be verified or repaired, which is why you shouldn't delete things from /Library/Receipts/ . See Disk Utility shows a "No Valid Packages" alert.
    I hope that helps.

  • Random thought.. disk defrag dvd image

Yes we can now better organize the data layout in DVDSP in order to make seek times faster when navigating a finished project. I was just pondering off-hand whether or not running a disk defragmentation utility on the completed DVD before burning might improve playback. I have absolutely no evidence to suggest that it would, but if there are any experts reading, it is a curious idea.

    Zak:
I think Daniel means the DVD build files in the hard drive.
My guess is that no matter how "fragmented" the VIDEO_TS files could be in your hard drive, that will have not influence in the way that the final DVD files are allocated.

  • Disk Utility: Defrag and Scandisk

    Hey all!
I was looking into running a disk defrag on my computer but apparently defrag runs in the background all the time.
I dropped the macbook while it was on today and I am afraid of a head crash. Is there any utility to run such as scan disk to check for any disk errors?

Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Select the hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab. In the DU status are look for the SMART info. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive has failed. Otherwise, click on Verify Disk button. If no errors are reported the drive is OK. If errors are reported then you will need to boot from your OS X Installer Disc and run Disk Utility from the installer's Utilities menu. Select your startup volume then click on First Aid tab. Click on the Repair Disk button. If errors are reported that are fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.

  • Disk Problems, OSX partition will not repair is Windows CHKDSK the culprit?

    Hi,
I have both Snow Leopard (fully updated) and Windows 7 on Bootcamp partition on my MacBook Pro.
Repairing Permissions on my Mac OS 10.6.4 partition had become a very regular with 'Java' permission problems always seeming to be a very regular and common one.
Anyhow, I thought it appropriate and logical to run the WIndows 7 equivalent of disk-verify/disk-repair/permission-repair and therefore run CHKDSK at 'CMD' level and this appeared to run accordingly without problems.
At some point/days later, my Mac OS appeared to be slow and having a lot of spinny-ball, therefore verified Macintosh HD volume-disk with Disk Utility and showed to have lots of problem. Disk Utility Repair has failed having tried it many times and not even Drive Genius 3 is able to repair or rebuild it on this occasion however I was able to run a 'Scan' on it from Drive Genius 3 and it reported thankfully that there was NO bad blocks.
The error thats returned repeatedly when doing a repair is "Incorrect number of thread records" which is reported immediately after "Checking Catalog File"
Not keen on the thought of having to format, re-install and then re-setup the system even from a Super-Duper backup copy that I had made previously (minus some data since).
    However, my questions are:
    1. Is it possible that the Windows 7 'CHKDSK' command may have possibly caused this despite the fact that it would have or should have only performed it's operations on the BOOTCAMP disk partition?
    2. Is it possible to reformat and restore any previously backed-up images to a single disk partition _without upsetting the other Partition and OS_ residing on it (albeit on the same overall physical disk), i.e. Restoring my Mac OS X SuperDuper backup image back onto the current Mac partition... and would the same apply if ever having to restore a Windows 7 Acronis backup image back onto the current BOOTCAMP partition.
    3. Would there be another alternative before a drastic reformat and recovery of the Mac OSX partition (if that's even possible without affecting BOOTCAMP - from question 2 above)
Advice would be much appreciated, many thanx.

At the time I had run the 'CHKDSK' command from within Windows, from the 'Run' command prompt located within the Start Menu.
Fortunately I still have the previous HDD that originally came with the MacBook Pro before I upgraded the internal drive some time ago and therefore I have been able to boot externally from this and continue to do so until I've decided what to do, which looks like a recovery from the previous super-duper backup will be inevitable.
I guess I'm unlikely to come across any software or fix that will be capable of correcting the 'faulty number of thread records' being reported after the 'Checking Catalog File' disk repair check routine, however if I find a solution then I'll post it here, otherwise an eventual recovery/install it is.
Under Fortuny's revelation, I will procede with MacDrive with caution and probably disable it if ever running a Windows CHKDSK again (if indeed this is the underlying cause of the problem). And under your advise 'The hatter' I shall certainly look into the Windows system file checker alternative, thanks.
