Erase all data or ignore?
Hi all.
I'v arranged a repair with apple for my iPhone 4 (its on its last few days of warranty).
However I am unsure about the instructions they give.
They say if possible to delete all the content off your iPhone.
My phone has many problems (cant hear anything when making/receiving calls, home key unresponsive, vibrates randomly for hours & freezes etc). I'm afraid to turn the phone on & erase all the data incase I do more damage & apple use it as an excuse not to fix the iPhone!! (my contents are backed up from previous syncing).
What should I do?
Will I do any software damage by doing this??
The reason I dont want to turn on the phone is because, it vibrated for over 3 hrs & then turned off, I have not switched it on since.
I'm afraid if I switch it on it will do more damage than good.

Connect the iPhone to a computer running iTunes and use iTunes on that
computer to restore as a new iPhone which will wipe current content. -

Okay here's the rundown of my problem on my iPhone 5 32GB. I can't check currently (you'll understand why later) but I believe it was on iOS 7.1.1 as I know it wasn't the absolute most recent version. First off, my lock button is sometimes unresponsive, a hardware issue and I haven't gotten around to getting that fixed yet. Anyways.
Today I wanted to open up my twitter app. The instant it opens, everything freezes. I mean everything: screen, lock button, home button, everything. The screen usually shuts off after 90s if I don't do anything, so the screen went black after this time as everything I did didn't register. Now with the screen being black, still no response from most things. The only thing I can do is activate Siri, though the screen still doesn't turn on, just the sound. She couldn't usually hear me, and if she did it would take her about a minute or so to respond. I can still connect to iTunes (windows 8) though so I did that, but I stopped the initial sync. I tried doing the hold both buttons for 10s thing but that didn't work (might be because the lock button is iffy) so I couldn't start recovery mode.
At this point, I decide the only thing I could do (because no where on Google anyone had a similar problem) is to restore the phone, either to factory or to a backup. When I tried these options in iTunes, it told me that it could not do this while Find my iPhone is active, and to go to settings on my phone to turn it off. I can't open settings with the screen black. I tried going to icloud.com in order to see if I could turn it off from there. The site could find my phone just fine, could make the sound just fine. I could however not remove the device from iCloud unless the phone was turned off (which I again can't do with a black screen).
At this point, I went to the directory with the backup on my computer and copied it to another location. Then in iTunes I did a sync to create a new backup. Now the only thing that was available for me to do was on the web site to erase all data from the phone as it did not require Find my iPhone to be turned off. Feeling out of options, I went through with it and clicked erase. For some reason, this is the time that the screen decides to turn on. The phone showed the apple logo and a progress bar. The bar progressed quickly at first but then slowed as it neared the end. At this current point, it's been at what appears to be 100% for around an hour with nothing happening. The buttons do nothing, my computer can't see the device so iTunes won't do anything.
Is there anything else I could try to do or should I just wait it out. My city does have an apple store which I could go to tomorrow but if I could get my phone running tonight that would be great. Also, if I can't do anything and it doesn't budge, if I take it to the store would it cost a lot to fix or (if necessary) replace? It was a birthday gift two years ago, bought without a plan, and I don't think it's still under warranty.Hi..thanks for your advice!
Ok, I am student so buying a new phone is not possible ;( This experience has turned me off Apple anyway! All I did was click yes to their iTunes upgrade prompt asking me if I want to update....and now I don't have a phone and can't access all my backup etc on my iTunes because it seems the only way to get to it is with another iPhone!?
I can't believe that through the Apple recycling program I could possibly get $50 for this phone because the hardware is perfect but there is no support for this issue...feels like Apple is just trying to force everyone with hacked phone to buy new ones! -

It's really been puzzling me, I've never logged in the Apple site on a laptop before - I have been getting the same message 'Unable to verify iCloud account' every time I try and erase all data and content from my iPhone 4s. When I go to iCloud on my laptop and sign in using my Apple ID it signs me in. These are the same log in details I am prompted for when trying to erase all data/content from the phone. If anybody could point me in the direction that would be really appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone know if you need to do the IOS update to be able to restore all data and content? I have not installed the new update on either of my iPhone 4S's yet.

I unfortunately just got my IPhone 4s stolen.I thought I had the find my iPhone enabled but I didn't because I cannot locate the phone when I sign in ICloud.I have a password on the phone but i'm not sure if I turned on the option where the phone resets if you incorrectly put the password more than ten time. I immediately called my phone company (Verizon) and reported the phone stolen.So I know whoever took the phone cannot place calls or use the phone. But can they still access my data on the phone if they manage to unlock the phone? If so how can I erase all data on the phone so the thief can't access my personal information? is there any other way other than Find my IPhone to wipe off the data on the phone? I'm sorry to hear about your phone! I understand the need for an active device. You are able to activate an old device and process an insurance claim for your iPhone 4s within 60days from the incident date. Keep in mind if the old phone is not a smartphone and you currently have unlimited data that feature will fall off. If you have a tier data plan no changes will be made. iCloud password works on everything but erasing all data. I got a new iPhone and need to wipe this one but am not sure how else to do this since the password is not working. Any suggestions?
Firefox also makes regular backups of your bookmarks in a folder named bookmarkbackups in your personal settings folder. You can restore the backup to your new Firefox, but unlike importing the HTML-format file, it is a complete drop-in replacement, so if you have saved new bookmarks you do not want to lose, the export/import method may work better for you.
By default, Windows hides your personal settings folder so the easiest way to access it is from inside Firefox. You can use either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This will launch a window showing your Firefox settings files.
You might want to back up this whole folder if you have other data you want to preserve from your XP computer.
Either way, you should find the bookmarkbackups folder here and when you click into it, find maybe 10 files with dates in their names.

i've jail break Iphone 3GS. i tried to restore setting (erasing all data and media) without connecting to computer/itunes. When it starts it freezes by showing apple logo only. what is the solution. please help me out. Here i don't have iphone service center too.
Although not illegal, Apple discourages a user from modifying the iPhone OS in any manner, including "jailbreaking". Apple feels so strongly about this that discussing methods to assist a user trying to either jailbreak or "unjailbreak" an iPhone are prohibited.

I live in Canada. Each time I travel to the US, I lose all calendar entries. I have to erase all data, then restore from an iCloud backup. Tedious. iPhone 4, iOS 7.1, sync set to all events. I only use the default calendar. Do I have an incorrect setting?
I did find another point worth mentioning.
I use my iPhone 4 with a corporate Exchange email account. I had deleted the account from my phone just before I did this backup/restore process...and I thought my battery drain was much, much better (if not outright fixed).
Later in the day, after seeing my battery life improve to near-new behavior, I re-added my Exchange mail account. Considering I have 1 yahoo account and 3 gmail accounts, the Exchange account adds a 5th email account.
What happened? Battery drain back to "worst case". Removing or re-adding the Exchange account is like toggling between decent and terrible drain conditions.
Bottom line is that I re-added a couple dozen applications and battery life didn't change. By far, the Exchange account drains the battery worse than any other app and setting. This account must be polling very frequently and since people tend to send very large file attachments to that account, perhaps those effect the battery drain even though I have the account set to not download attachments.
Anyone running Microsoft Exchange might be able to confirm what I see? If so I can open an enterprise ticket with Microsoft and bug them on this issue. -

You can not install iOS 5. It is no longer signed by Apple. You can only install the current version of iOS. For a 3GS, that's 6.1.3.
However... if you have 4.2.1 on your phone, odds are it is not a 3GS, it is a 3G. If that's the case, you've reached the end of the road for that. It can not run anything higher than 4.2.1. -
How to erase all data on E71x ?
I just bought an E71x and I really regret. Because :
1. batter--hard to take it in/out
2. Sync--no contact group function when sync with outlook. I have to group my contact manually
3. Voice command sucks
4. Very hard to hard rese/erase all data after doing the factory configuration

3. After the device restart, calendar/to-do data... are still on the device.
Thank you in advance.because newer nokia devices have udp- user data preservation feature even if you reset your phone data will remian intact. the only way to truly get rid off your stuff is to use option 3 on this list. understand that you will lose all your data and make sure you ahve a back up of everything you need before doing this. the default code is always 12345. the restore setttings option DOES not remove any data, just restores default settings on your phone.
1. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for all operations listed here is 12345
2. *#7370# - Reformat your phone
3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working.If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
hard reset - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. )
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.

When I go to "Erase all Content and Settings"
it askes me for my 4 digit Passcode.
The problem is, I never set a Passcode to the iPhone.
I did once to my iPad.
I tried 2 different Passcodes I used on other devices, none of them worked... of course!
So how can I erase the data on my iPhone then?if I will do that, what happens to the backup I wanted to bring back when I want to restore the phone to its current state? It might overwrite an empty backup over the original one?
