Erase boot camp in recovery mode

I cant seem to erase the 5gb left on bootcamp
lion up is to date
Im in recovery mode now

You should have used Boot Camp to remove Windows, DU will leave a mess and will make it difficult to recover the space. Exactly what steps led to you to use Recovery?

  • Hard drive OS volume boots only to recovery mode

    Greetings,
I have an install of OS 10.8.5 on the main volume of our Mac Pro (2011-Westmere) in our department electronic music studio.
Upon entry into the studio, I noticed that the unit was booted up to the grey matte finish recovery mode desktop. I restarted and the Mac went immediately back to recovery mode. I went ahead and ran Disk utilities (in R.Mode) and repaired disc permissions to the OS volume, which was clearly recognized and mounted by Disc Utilities - the volume is readily recognized. All went well and the drive was also verified as good. I rebooted, held down left option key, and on the selection page made sure the Mac chose the boot volume to boot up from. The Mac immediately went back to recovery mode, which is where we are at this point:
The OS volume s clearly seen (even remotely), but refuses to allow a boot-up from it, preferring instead the recovery volume, ever time.
I've reset the SMC and zapped the PRAM/NVRAM to no avail.
Any hope for recovering boot capability, before I wipe the drive and start from scratch?
    Thank you,
    dlcatftwin

After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.

  • Erased boot camps hard drive with time machine?

so, i completely erased windows by erasing what was on boot camps hard drive. Boot camp cannot read my "start up" harddrive now. and the harddrive will not turn into a jornaled macintosh hard drive. i checked it with disk utility and it claims to be ok. is there a way i canget back the hard drive and my windows 7 to start up all over again?

I am having a similar problem.  I use a  Lacie external hard drive connected to an Airport Time Capsule via USB to store my itunes library.  Yesterday I disconnected the external drive from the ATC and connected it to my macbook pro via fire wire to transfer 40 gigabytes of media files from my laptop to the external drive directly rather than over wifi.  When I reattached the external drive to the ATC the Lacie drive didn't show up even after rebooting everything. I then disconnected from the ATC and reconnected to the laptop and now I get an error message saying the Lacie disk is unrecognizable and needs to be reformated.  The Lacie drive was being included in the time machine backups so the files should be available through time machine but I don't see anyway to access them because the Lacie disk icon doesn't appear in the time machine backups.  Is there another way to browse the files?
I have had issues with Lacie disks not showing up on the desktop before, particularly when transferring files from one computer to another.  The transfer usually goes fine but then when I reattach the drive to the first computer it isn't recognized anymore until I reboot and it sometimes requires a couple of reboots.  I initially tried to connect the external drive to both the ATC and the laptop but that didn't work, although now I'm wondering if that was because the connection to the laptop was firewire rather than USB like the ATC.  In any case I currently have over a terabyte of data on my lacie that I can't access which includes my entire itunes library and backup files from multiple computers which were "cleaned" but not restored.
Disk utility sees the drive but can't verify or repair and tells me to backup as many files as possible and then reformat.  Unfortunately I can't see ANY files to backup because the disk won't mount anywhere.  If anyone has a recommendation for utilities to recover the files I'd be most grateful to get them.

  • How to reinstall mac os x without erase boot camp?

Situation:Today, i was using mac os x this morning, it worked fine. then when i went home from work, start up the macbook pro, it took like 4-5 minutes to start the login, then take 30-45 secs, then the desktop starting to freeze!
Notes: I have Boot Camp on it.
Question: Can i reinstall mac os x without erasing the boot camp patition?
    Thank you to reply!

Yes, if you think it's necessary you can hold c and boot off the installer OS X disk for your 10.6 and simply reinstall OS X and bundled programs right over the previous ones without it touching your files or other programs.
However, you should take ANY opportunity to transfer your files off the computer (manually, not via TimeMachine) just in case there is a bigger issue afoot, like a failing hard drive.
You might also want to take a look at the free OnyX, run all the maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.
Covers a ton of bases in one place.

  • Problems with Windows install and erasing Boot camp partition.

I recently decided I'd try running a copy of XP on my Macbook, the only reason being that the software for my OU work is only available on Windows. I used Boot camp assistant to partition my hard drive which went smoothly. When I tried to install Windows, I get to the Windows install screen, and it says "Press enter to begin installation". Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't seem to work, so obviously I can't begin the installation. I've tried using my old Apple USD keyboard, but it didn't make any difference. I thought I'd try the whole process from scratch, but found I can't erase the original partition. I've read that you should use Boot camp assistant again, but when I press the continue key, I get the message:
"The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
Does anybody know a way of sorting either of these problems out? Much appreciated.

I've been doing a bit more reading into the problem. I think the keyboard problem's because I'm not using the SP2 version on XP. So hopefully once I get a copy, I should be able to sort it. But I still can't seem to use BCA to erase the partition.

  • F2 button not booting PC into recovery mode and Multimedia Controller error in device manager.

    Hello everyone,
I updated my lenovo ideacentre b540p from windows 7 home premium to windows 8.1 pro. I have two issues that came up after the upgrade.
    1. I can no longer access the Lenovo rescue system 3.0 by pressing the F2 button during startup to boot into recovery mode which was possible when I was using windows 7 and because of this I am unable to install the software and drivers that came with the PC.
    2. In device manager the multimedia controller driver is not installed. It shows a yellow sign in the other devices group. I have tried different version from the lenovo support site but none of them work. The PC was shipped without a CD containing the drivers but if I can access the rescue system, I believe I will find the driver I need for the multimedia controller.
    Solved!

    Hi RR7,
You might have a look at this page: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaCentre-Desktops-Home-Servers/Windows-8-Recovery-partition-not-recogn...
It's Windows 8 related, but you'll better understand what may happen when your cloned HD has not the same size as the original one.
interesting post, thanks. sadly i'm not sure this really helps. i didnt find what i expected.
the reagent.xml only has two references to offset, and they both refer to the partition that contains windows 7. i have changed this offset on the cloned disk to match the actual partition offset but it makes no difference.
i don't see any reference to the hidden lenovo partition or its offset in the windows recovery.
i also cant see any reference to it in the BCD on either the source or clonded disk.
all i see if pressing F2 on the source OEM when powering on loads a special lenovo recovery environment, and doing the same thing on the clonded disk just shows the windows 7 boot loader option for choosing to boot windows or do a memory test.
my question still remains, what is the magic thats happening when i press F2?

  • Zen Micro not booting up and recovery mode doesn't do anyth

    Hi,
I just got my Zen Micro yesterday and it worked fine until the second battery charging.
I charged it using the AC adapter. When it finished charging I tried to turn it on but it wouldn't go past the Createi've log (the second screen after the one with the copyright notice)
Since then I've tried all the options in the recovery menu but they don't seem to have any effect. (The recovery mode displays "Creative Zen Micro v0.0.58 at the top)
I tried "clean up" and gave it at least 30 minutes but it didn't finish.
I tried "reload firmware" but after some time I took out the battery and it still gets stuck at the second Creative screen. I don't get the firmware error screen.
Also tried the format and reboot options... nothing.
Yesterday I upgraded the firmware to .02.05 firmware and didn't have any problems. All the software also worked fine on my WinXP machine.
    Would appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Greg.

I've had the exact same problems as GregL, except that I have the original firmware that came with the Zen Micro (I was planning to upgrade it until this whole mess happened).
I charged it fully a few times, and it'd been working fine for about fi've days, and now, I can't get past the "Creative" logo screen! Recovery menu works, but the options don't seem to get anywhere. They never get past "Erasing Firmware", "Scan Disk", and the like. I've tried rebooting and I've tried removing the battery, but nothing has changed.
Does anyone know what might be wrong with my Zen Micro?

    Hi.
I have just tried to update Ipad to IOS6.1, but it failed during install. The pad now seems to be stuck in recovery mode.
I have tried to restore to factory settings but I get a error code 3194
During attempted restore the restore screen does not show the Ipad name, serial number or software version number.
Any suggestions, I think it may need to be sent away to be repaired, and i fear this will be very expensive!!!

  • I get a blue screen when I try to boot into the recovery mode

My computer froze and refuses to boot. When I try to boot from a recovery partition (both on the main hard drive and an installer on on an external hard drive) the screen turns blue (sometimes with vertical stripes). Any suggestions as to what's causing this. It will be another week before I can go to a Genius Bar.

  • HT4972 3gs wont boot up into 'recovery mode' can you help

    Hi.
I try to put my 3gs into recovery mode but it just starts the phone as normal, as if 'recover' is not possible.

Not only will the warranty be void, you will have given up your ability to get a discounted out of warranty replacement phone.
If you still can't get it into recovery mode, try DFU mode: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034
If that doesn't work, make an appointment at the genius bar.

  • Computer wouldn't start. I booted it in recovery mode, started to reinstall but hit a snag.

Recovery HD and Macintosh HD are both "locked" and it won't let me select them. They both say "this disk is locked" at the bottom.
    Any ideas?

    ClassyCoug,
do you have a bootable external drive from which you could start up?
If your Mac has a FireWire port, and you have access to a FireWire cable and a second Mac with a FireWire port, you could boot your Mac into Target Disk mode to have it act like an external disk on the second Mac, from which you could run Disk Utility against your Mac’s internal drive to verify (and possibly repair) it.

  • P20 - Windows 98 appears on boot when in recovery mode

    Hi,
I'm a tad confused. I am trying to reload windows XP from my recovery CD. However, after hitting the F12 and selecting CD boot, Windows 98 appears. I haven't proceeded any further as I don't want windows 98 on my laptop.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening. The recovery discs are original supplied with my laptop and this really is the first time I have bothered cleaning system as it is my pc that gets more software put on it?
I'm a tad concerned as it was supplied with win xp and when I got it home all I did was register the software.
    Information on the recovery cd 1/2 is T#R-01002000 & T202009-EN. and cd 2/2 is T#R-01002001 & T202009-EN. - both cds are dated 2003
    Any suggestions anybody.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi,
    don't worry, that's normal.
A recovery disc is a bootable disc. That means it is loading an operating system (OS) from CD, and based on that it will do its job. But it does not install this OS. In case of recovery the OS is Windows 98. And on this platform it will install Windows XP on your hard disc.
    Bye

  • Booting into recovery mode and Web service in 10.7 server

I have two servers: Server A is running 10.6 server and server B is running 10.7 server. Both are on the same LAN at a data center. My questions are as follows:
1 - is there a way to restart server B into recovery mode remotely? (and not using a KVM)
2 - if server B was booted successfully into recovery mode is there a way to screen share with it from server A? If so how would this be done?
3 - can Apple Remote Desktop reboot a 10.7 machine into recovery mode and still continue to see its screen?
4 - in the Server app of 10.7 server there is a default website setup in the Web service. it doesn't seem possible to edit any of the information for this default website, is this true?
5 - is there any way to get the Web service in the 10.7 Server Admin tools? it is missing among many other services.
    Thanks

Probability is very high that you have a hardware failure. You should get an external bootable drive (or startup with a bootable DVD if you can) JUST to prove that it's not the motherboard, but probably the hard drive that's failed.

  • How can I download lion from Mac app store in recovery mode on an imac?

I bought a mid-2007 imac from a friend, who the computer was working perfectly for. When I went to start up it wouldn't start up (past the gray screen) from the regular HD no matter how many tricks I tried (resetting SMC, PRAM, etc), so I went in to recovery mode. I verified and repaired the disc more than once (even though it said it was fine), and tried to reinstall lion from the online recovery function but it said "item temporarily unavailable." I basically tried every combo of things possible before erasing the HD but nothing worked, so then I decided to erase the HD.
SO that happened, and now I can still boot up in recovery mode and it -seems- like if I can find a way to reinstall lion (which was the last os running), I may be back in business.
however, see the problem with "item temporarily unavailable."
I decided to purchase it from the Mac store online on a different device and it says it will email me a link in 1-3 business days (really??! That long to save me with an EMAIL LINK???), and my thought is that maybe I can log in to my email from the safari window and download it that way. I'm just afraid that I won't be able to access the Mac app store if that is where it downloads from.
Ultimately, I'm trying to avoid a trip to the Apple Store because this thing will be a nightmare to lug on public transportation. My questions for you are as follows:
    - how likely do you think it is that I'll be able to successfully download lion from the email link in recovery mode?
    - Do actual discs with lion exist anywhere in the wide world? If so, how can I get one?
    - would it be worth it to grab an old lion usb stick from amazon?
    - is there ANY other way to reinstall lion or install a new os on this thing without physically taking the computer anywhere?

What a silly company , i have the same exact problem with my macbook pro and i've checked every topic that mention this problem and they didn't solve it .
