Erase Deleted Messages - what's the diff btw the options given?

There is a menu selection called Erase Deleted Messages. It gives three options: In All Accounts, On My Mac, and (me)@(mydomain).com - what's the difference between these three? I can't find the distinctions described anywhere.

The Mailbox > Erase Deleted Messages commands permanently delete messages already in the Trash. The Trash isn't really a mailbox itself, rather it's a set of mailboxes grouped together: there is a Trash mailbox for each account, plus a Trash mailbox for messages which were previously stored in mailbox folders outside of any particular account (i.e. On My Mac). If you click the small black triangle to the left of the big Trash icon, you'll be able to see and select all these individual Trash mailboxes.
The different Mailbox > Erase Deleted Messages commands let you choose whether you want to permanently delete messages from all Trash mailboxes or just from one of them.

• Whats is the diff. btw classic badi and new badi

Hi guy,
I just found out that there is classic and new badi implementation in SE19, I would like to check out with u guys on what is the diff btw the two?
thanks.

Differences Between Classic and New BAdIs
Classic and new BAdIs differ in a number of features that are important for migration:
1. BAdI object
a. With classic BAdIs, a BAdI object is created by calling a factory method, and referenced via a reference variable of the type of the BAdI interface.
b. With new BAdIs, a BAdI object is created via the ABAP statement GET BADIas a handle for the calls of BAdI methods, and referenced via a reference variable of the type of the BAdI. A BAdI object is an instance of an internal BAdI class, which otherwise is invisible to the outside.
2. Passing comparison values for the filter
a. With the classical BAdIs, the filter values are stored in a structure and passed with the call of the BAdI methods.
b. With the new BAdIs, the comparison values for the filters used to search for implementations are passed when the BAdI object is created with the GET BADIstatement.
There is no way of migrating the call of the factory method one-to-one into the ABAP statement, because GET BADI can also return an existing BAdI object, which is not possible with the factory method.
3. Calling BAdI methods
Passing comparison values for the filter
a. A classic BAdI can be called only once and the call positions are registered centrally.
b. With new BAdIs, multiple calls are possible and the call positions are not registered centrally.
For the above reasons, an automatic call migration is not possible.

• Emails in my 'trash' are being deleted after about 5 weeks, but I want to retain them. I have elected 'never' on the 'permanently erase deleted messages' option, so I'm not sure why this happening?

emails in my 'trash' are being deleted after about 5 weeks, but I want to retain them. I have selected 'never' on the 'permanently erase deleted messages' option, so I'm not sure why this happening? any ideas?

iCloud emails in the Trash are deleted after 30 days on the website, and this over-rides the 'never' setting in Mail. There is no way of stopping this. (The Trash isn't really intended as a permanent storage area.)
Try this workaround. Go to http://www.icloud.com and go to the Mail page. In the sidebar, click on '+' to the right of 'Folders' to create a new folder; give it a suitable name.
Now click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left. At the bottom of the pane which opens, set the 'Move deleted messages to' drop-down menu to your new folder.
I'm not sure whether, when you delete messages in the Mail application, they will go to the Trash or your new folder - you'll need to experiment. I have a nasty feeling that Mail will simply move them to the Trash as before. If this is the case you will have to move them to your new folder manually - dragging messages directly to this folder rather than hitting the delete key will be the easiest way.

• Can't Erase deleted Messages with apple-K keyboard command anymore...?

Last few weeks I've noticed that the keyboard command Apple -K will no longer erase deleted message....has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, is there a workaround? Thanks in advance...
Dual 2.0 Ghz G5, 1 GB RAM, 10.4.3
Power Mac G5 Dual 2 GB (first gen) Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Same experience here. Addidionally, while I had more than one account configured, for a while, %K would pop up a new dialog box, asking for confirmation. That was unwanted new behaviour too, I think. The dialog box went away when I removed the inactive account, though.
It's not just deleted messages that don't go away: it's the remaining copy of messages moved into other mail folders, too. This leaves "deleted" copies of messages littered throughout my (extensive) imap folder hierarchy. Aargh!
The only work-around that I've found is to use another mail client program to clean up the mail boxes.

• When I try to delete message threads on my iPhone 5, the message app won't work until I restart my phone. Once it restarts, the message threads that I tried to delete are still there. Any advice?

When I try to delete message threads on my iPhone 5, the message app won't work until I restart my phone. Once it restarts, the message threads that I tried to delete are still there. Any advice?

I recently spoke to someone from Apple support, and here's what I gathered:
"Older" phones (read: anything iPhone 4s or older?) sometimes have trouble keeping up with the processing demands of the newest software. When deleting threads with a lot of media (photos, videos, etc), it can take a lot of processing to successfully delete. What this support tech suggested was picking some of the bigger threads at night before you go to bed, deleting them, and then leaving the phone alone-- and plugged in-- overnight to give it enough time to delete everything. He suggested not even pressing the lock button; just leave it to process (though I imagine the screen will lock on its own anyway).
Not sure if it works yet since I just spoke to him, but it's the closest thing I've got to a solution!

• Can I set Mail.app to default "Permanently erase deleted messages when" to Never, for all new accounts?

When setting up new accounts in Mail.app, I generally remember to set the "Permanently erase deleted messages when:" setting to "Never", in contrast to its harsh default 1-month setting.
When I first switched to a Mac years ago (probably around the time of Leopard, or one before), I didn't know of this setting, as it's somewhat buried and not part of the add new account "walkthrough", and I permanently lost serious business mail on a self-hosted mail server, due to this, in my opinion, really stupid default setting.
At any rate, as I said, I usually remember to change this, but I recently synched accounts via iCloud to a new machine (a work machine), and for whatever reason, the setting didn't take on one account (just one account; despite being set to "never" on the primary mac from which things sync). Same problem all over again.
So, Is there a way I can simply change the default, in the system, so that whenever a new account is created, Mail.app sets the default "erase messages when" time to "Never"?
I need to duplicate Gmail (archiving) functionality and thus far this is the best way I have of going about it; leaving those messages in trash on my regular old everyday IMAP servers.
I did run into this solution – http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22283, though it was for Mail.app in OSX 10.2 (so things have changed now), but I'm willing to bet there is a similar command, more up to date, that might do something similar? I'd like to run such a command on all of my machines so that ALL new mail accounts created are set to NEVER permanently auto-empty the trash–that should be done when I chose, and when I chose only.

Open Mail preferences, click on the Accounts icon in the toolbar then select your mail account, click on the Mailbox Behaviours tab on the right. Set the dropdown menu at the bottom for the Never option.
However, you cannot change the default options set for a newly created account.

• Erasing deleted messages with IMAP

My work email account is setup as an IMAP account and is set to just mark deleted messages (and hide them from view, not move to trash). So I've got a smart mailbox setup to collect messages older than a certain date so i can erase really old messages.
So my question is this: If i right click on the smart mailbox and click "erase deleted messages" will it erase only the messages in this smart mailbox or will it erase all deleted messages in my whole email account?

awesome.

• I will going to change my simcard in iPhone 4s do I need to delete messages on it before I insert the new one?

I will going to change my simcard in iPhone 4s do I need to delete messages on it before I insert the new one?

The SIM card only holds information from your carrier regarding your account. I'm not sure how someone else is going to get ahold of your old SIM. If you are selling the phone, wipe the phone clean and remove the SIM.

• The diff between the two 8 core 3Ghz mac pros?

I am in the market for a mac pro. I will spend the money for an 8 core 3ghz cpu. I am a “do it your self” kind of guy. I am not afraid to do some installations myself (drives, Ram, GFX card, optic drive,)
I mainly use CS3, cinema 3D and FCP, On XP, Nuke and Studio Max. Dual displays, One 24” LCD and One CRT.
I have a few basic questions that maybe someone can point me to a link or better explain.
What is the diff between the two mac pros listed below. All I can come up with is the graphics cards and the ram? Is this right?
My plan is to upgrade the ram with the newer 800MHz DDR-2 ram, and graphics card. The stock 7300GT can get me by for now, than something else when the time is right (8800GT, I have not done my homework here, not a priority yet). I do zero gaming and don’t even care to spend money to play games. My priority is not in gaming and I feel a majority of folks are spending the money on the card to play games, so I am trying to find the pros for upgrading in my situation. Better open gl capturing, better graphics acceleration in CS3 better for 3d apps, most likely, but I can survive with the 7300GT for now right? I am fine with that now, but an upgrade in a year or so in the graphics card department is the plan. My priority for the money is order: ram, cpu, drives, Gfx card.
So, recap, what disadvantage would I put myself in for going with the 1st model of mac pro listed below or spend the extra 600 for the second model of macpro? Again, ram will 100% for sure be upgraded as will the hard drives.
Advice please.
Here is a link to the two units I am looking at. It is a 600$ difference.

• Disk Utility: what's the diff between the drive icons in the left window?

I don't partition my drives. In my left window of Disk Utility I see 2 lines for each drive in my computer. My main drive looks like this:
465.8 GB ST3500630AS Media
Main HD
Main HD is obviously the name I gave my drive. So is the first line the drive and the 2nd line the volume? And if I partitioned, I assume they'd all be listed under the first line (465.8)?
When working on a drive that is not partitioned like mine above such as when repairing permissions or the repairing the disk, does it matter which I select? The top line (465.8) or 2nd line (Main HD)?
Thanks,
Steven

Your assumptions are correct.
Some of the options in disk utility are for volumes and some are for the disk. If an option appears for both, then no, it doesn't matter which one is selected.

Thanks Keith.
I tried all that and it looked to install properly. But keeps timing out when trying to connect to my server, and my personal folders have not appeared?
Any ideas? I ahve re-checked all the settings and they look fine
Thanks
Ruth
The only time I have seen that is when there is a setting wrong. This is usually detected when you first create the account, as it validates your settings against the BT yahoo server. You will get an error at this point if anything is wrong.
Usually its because the password has been entered incorrectly, or the account name is incorrect.
Once it gets past this point, its usually fine. It can take a short while when you first try to read the folders, as it has to fetch the list of folders.
If you look at the activity manager, you can normally see what is going on. That is on the "tools" menu.
If its failing for some reason, the information will be in that log.
I assume that after you entered your e-mail account and password, you got a message saying that it was looking up the ISP details, in the Mozilla database?
You then should have seen a screen asking you to select IMAP or POP. Did you see this screen below? You must select the IMAP box, otherwise you will have to delete the accont and start again.

• Mail app not deleteing messages in trash like it's supposed to

I have a .mac email account. In "Mailbox Behaviors" I have checked "Move deleted messages to the Trash Mailbox" and "Store Deleted Messages on Server". I also have selected "Permenantly erase deleted messages when: one day old".
The problem is that mail is not deleting my messages when one day old. The messages just sit there in the trash forever.
Anyone else have this problem or have any ideas on how to solve?
Thanks.
EDIT: The message was deleted when I quit mail and restarted. I don't understand. Usually I leave my mail app up and running 24/7. I thought that selecting "Permenantly erase deleted messages when: one day old" was supposed to do that even if the mail app was running all the time, when it syncronizes? But I have to quit mail and restart it to get it to do that?

Hi, McToast.
I don't use .Mac mail, but I've noticed the same behavior w.r.t. "Delete messages when one day old." Personally, I think it's a bug. I just press Command-K every once in awhile in Mail to delete all the Trash: I have mail set up to move everything that is considered Junk to the Trash vs. a Junk mailbox.
I submitted a Mac OS X Feedback on this months ago. You may want to do the same.
You might want to check the Mail & Address Book Discussion, which is where Mail-related questions should be posted.
