Erase disk and clean install - The only way

Just a note to say that I tried Archive and Install, and Migrate, and was beset with many of the problems discussed here. I messed about for hours trying to sort this and that. Then I decided that it was time for a fresh start.
I hated the idea of starting again from scratch installing all my progs one by one. It took me about a day, as I tried each program for glitches after install. But it felt more satisfying than trying to fix a busted system.
There were no glitches. I stayed away from progs with known issues.
http://www.macintouch.com/leopard/compat.html
I started with the progs I can't live without, and added the others as needed. I kept a backup of my old system and dragged in prefs for many apps as needed, which speeded things up and made it less painful. My main problem after that was importing Mail, as it seemed to be corrupted or at least Mail could not deal with the import. I got around that by using a prog called emix to mbox converter and imported the mbox file. That worked fine.
The result is that now my system is clean of all the dross of old prefs and progs I did not use anyway.
AND Leopard works really well.
I know it won't solve all the problems, and all the other install methods should work, but we have to remember every computer is different due to the soft we put in. A major system release is the burning edge. I'm so curious that I always get burned a bit. I know I should wait for the first update from apple before jumping in, like all my sensible friends. Of course, I do have a laptop still running Tiger so I'm not that brave!
All The Best
Gordon

Gordon, I think that for must users, the simple upgrade is the way to go, but only with a confirmed backup. I upgraded my "old" MBP and the process went perfectly and took a bit over an hour. Everything works and it works better than with Tiger.
I think the choice depends on how old the computer is, how many programs are installed, how good the hardware is, and how well prepared the computer and the user are for the upgrade.
If someone has a lot of special software installed, it's possible that they have some combination that was not tested simply because it's impossible to do so.
I would still recommend an upgrade (with that backup) then, if that does not go swimmingly, an erase and install.
I did a clean install on my G5 only because I wanted to keep the Tiger in the tank, so to speak, so the machine is dual-boot - one internal HD for each OS.
But, to each his own.
No piece of software will ever install smoothly on every computer. That's a given. The goal is to maximize the number of computers it will install on smoothly. This is also the reason Apple has cut off some older computers from this upgrade.
Perfection is for the other world, not this one.
However, with well over 2 million Leopards leaping out in the wild, I can only assume that most installs went perfectly or this board would be inaccessible for all the traffic we would have.
You obviously know what you are doing, and you did what it took.
I did one upgrade and one clean install and I would leave the choice up to the user.
But only if they have that all-important clone standing by in the sidelines.

If this is regarding your information line that says a stolen iPhone, Apple can do nothing to help you.  You must track the iPhone yourself using iCloud and must have turned on Settings > iCloud > Find My Phone before it was stolen.  If that was not done, there is no way to track the iPhone.
Report the theft to the police and the cell service provider and ask if they can blacklist the iPhone so it cannot be used.  Change all passwords associated with acconts on the iPhone.

  • HD secure erase, reformat, and clean install.

    BRIEF HISTORY:
i selected the manufacturers (fujitsu ...) HD from the list in disk utility booted from the mac os dvd. i first erased free space then selected it again and erased the entire disc securely w/ the 1x zero out method. then formatted it and chose one partition guid type, sized at 111.83 GB. the size of the fujitsu drive. clicked ok and the newly formatted drive size listed as only 111.47 GB with a dialogue box saying "this volume will not be erased".
    MY QUESTION:
according to apple phone support (2 diff techs) i should be able to create the partition the same exact size as the manufacturers size. they sent me to genius bar who said its normal due to ds.store but the difference/mb should be only 10-15 max. which one is right? is there a different operation to completely start fresh? without replacing the drive physically.
advance thanx for the time/effort to help

    Hi notfunny;
No. It is the directories and other system area so that system is able to find everything that is stored on the disk. If you want you can think of it as system overhead.

  • Is there a way to recover iPhoto library after erasing drive and clean install of Mavericks?

Is there a way to recover the photos in my iphoto library after erasing my SSD drive and reinstalling mavericks? My time capsule backed everything up except iphoto, and I had 3 years worth of important photots in there. Is there any way to recover them?

In addition to using a Time Capsule drive and using Time Machine, with this painful lesson learned, in the near future, purchase another high quality, high speed (USB 3.0, Thundetbolt OR FireWIre 800 depending what connections are on your Mac) external hard drive, formatted for Mac, and use a data cloning app such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make bootable clones/copies of your Mac's entire internal hard drive.
Bootable clones and data cloning apps are the best and most reliable way of creating reliable backups of your important data in the future.
Also, my other advise stands, too! If you have data the is like "gold" to you copy this data manually to other media such as CDs/DVDs and/or high capacity USB flash drives.
Sorry you have lost your precious photos.
Painful lesson, but good info to prevent this all from happening, again.
WIth computers, having many copies and redundancies of data is key to never losing important computer data.
    Again, sorry.

  • 8500 909a is on my network for days then it disappears and reinstall is the only way back

I am hoping someone can help me.  I am a computer reseller as well as the tech support provider to my customers.  I have tried everything that my 20 years experience has taught me and I cannot figure this out.
OS - Windows 7 Professional - with Administrative rights both locally and network wide.
4GB Ram and ample hard drive space.
Latest 8500 drivers from the web (Full package) downloaded and installed.
Networked using Netgear VPN Prosafe with a Server (2008 Std Edition) and 3 workstations as well as the HP 8500 (909a).  I AIO wired to my router, and I have a static IP assigned in the printer.  I have also reserved the static IP in my DHCP server so that the number isn't accidently handed out.   The printer will stay on the network for days sometimes weeks.  For no apparent reason, it just disappears.  The scanning doesn't find my computer and my computer doesn't see a printer any longer.  It sees the other HP Laser I have on the network (never losing that one - ever).
I am very tired of uninstalling and reinstalling to get this printer back.
Hoping someone has an answer for me.

I assume this is WIn7 64-bit?  If so, there are Firmware and Updates here that you should try.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • HT1551 when we try to watch a purchased show like The Good Wife - the program freezes and the little circle goes around and around - the only way to get the program going is to rewind or fast forward to jump start the movie again. Help!

When we rent a show like The Good Wife while watching the show it freezes and the little circle goes around and around. The only way to get the program going again is to use the remote and go forward or backward. This happens throughout the whole show and it is impossible to watch. Can anyone help? We cannot watch movies or shows this way.

    so what
    greetings from berlin

    Greetings,
It appears to be a FW problem, possibly flaky case, or drive problem.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • I have installed mackeeper on my iMac and ia show 1945 issues, is subscibing to mackeeper the only way to get rid of these issues

I have installed Mackeeper on my iMac an it shows 1945 issues, and they have used 700+ GB of hard drive space, is subscribing to Mackeeper the only way to get rid of these issues?

Those are not real issues. I tested the MacKeeper trial on a freshly-installed OS X 10.8.2 system, with absolutely nothing added to it, and it identified almost as many "junk files." They're not really junk, you're being scammed to convince you to pay the money to buy the program so you can "fix" the "problem." There have been many reports that allowing MacKeeper to "clean up" your system can actually destroy it, requiring reinstallation.
MacKeeper is to be avoided at all cost. For more information, see Beware MacKeeper. Remove it according to the instructions here:

  • I have ios 5.1.1. When I sync to iTunes, my purchased apps no longer work. They blink but do not open. The only way I have been able to solve this, is as follows: I delete one of the apps and then re-download and install it. Then, all my apps work.

My new iPod touch 64 Gig has a problem after syncing with iTunes. My purchased apps no longer work. I touch them and they seem to try to open but they do not.
The only way I have found to fix this is as follows:
I delete one of the purchased apps. Then I go to the App Store and re-download and install the same app. After that, all my apps work again.
    Please help.

Download/install an app is a know possible solution.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If all user-installed apps are not launching, it could be an Apple ID authorization issue. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information.
Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.
