Erase disk

I have an intel Xserve running 10.5.4 server and an EonStor raid array connected to the Xserve via SCSI. I have configured the EonStor as a 2.3TB raid array using the Infortrend Raidwatch software and mapped the LUNs accordingly. The array shows up in Disk Utility as a drive with no volumes. I have attempted to both partition and erase the disk to create a single volume but I get the Disk Utility "input/output" error every time. I then attempted to erase the disk using the "write zeros to disk" option, the write zeros option commenced and Disk Utility reported a time of 7 hours to complete the process. I checked the array and confirmed drive activity, when I returned some 7 hours later the "input/output" error was again displayed! I've tried single and multiple partition schemes but all to no avail, anyone out there with any Ideas or resolutions?

That particular error would be somewhat rude, if this is a volume-level error.
A discussion of maximum permitted volume size is integral with a discussion of volume format and of the particular driver interface. What volume format are you selecting here? HFS+? FAT? zfs?
Apple HFS+ and Sun zfs permit somewhere around 16 EB IIRC, which is more than enough here.
Microsoft FAT32 (which is really FAT28) gets you somewhere between 2 TB and 16 TB, depending on what volume cluster factor is allowed by your tools. Which implies you've selected FAT32.
The one and two terabyte range expects 31 and 32 bits of addressing; four bytes less the sign bit and four bytes. And the number of bits of addressing combined with the volume cluster allocation factor (if any) gets the upper limit on the permissible volume size. It is a fairly common window for volume-level defenestration.
And this could easily be a four-byte limit deep in the RAID software, and that's worth a discussion with the vendor of the RAID software and/or the driver(s) for the controller. I'm not familiar with the particular RAID package you are using, but this would not be the first time I've encountered a four-byte sector-addressing limit in a RAID or SCSI driver or in a software-based RAID package.

i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

  • Erase MacBook Pro hard disk. How? "Erase Disk" is grayed out.

I want to use Disk Utility to erase my HDD on MacBook Pro. BUT the Erase disk is greyed out. I checked user account and unlocked the padlock for my Admin account. What next please?

Remember to press the 'C' key to boot on the Snow Leopard disk (or set the boot disk from Preferences -> Startup disk)...
Also, if you want to install the OS on an external Hard Disk, format it GUI (check the help for instructions).

  • Trying to erase disk but has been 'unmounting' for a long time

Tried to erase disk before but then failed (could not unmount disk). I had Yosemite but when I restarted my MacBook pro it reverted to Mountain Lion (not a problem as I hated Yosemite). I assume that something was erased but when I go to download Mountain Lion it does not show any startup disks. The name of my startup disk has changed from Macintosh HD to APPLE HDD (lots of letters and numbers) Media. I went into Disk Utility again to erase the disk and it has just been 'unmounting disk' for an excessive amount of time with a blue and white load bar. I really have no idea what I'm doing and I need to use my laptop for essays so any help would really be appreciated.
    Thanks

How did you accidentally erase the drive? You can only do that be booting from your Recovery HD or another hard drive.
Are you connected to the Internet? Be sure you can run an Ethernet cable from the computer to your router as this will be much faster than wireless.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

My install of maverick failed as disk is damaged and cannot repaired. I tried to erase disk but got error disk cannot be unmounted. Please help. What can i do? Thank you very much.

First have you got a backup of your data? If not try to get one now while you have some access to the drive. The drive is probably faulty and will need to be replaced, without the backup you risk losing the data.
Have you a bootable external USB drive with Mavericks on it, if so boot from that and try and repair or erase the drive and reinstall Mavericks.
If you don't have Mavericks on an external drive,  boot from you Leopard DVD ( I am presumimg your profile is correct) and run Disk Utility from there, you may be able to erase the drive and reload Leopard. You can then install Mavericks. Even if all that works you will most likely need a new drive in the near future.

You appear not to be formatting the device but trying to repair it. Do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Erasing Disk Space

When running the "erasing disk space" in disk utility, everything runs, I assume, correctly as it should. When the task is complete, I get the following message:
+Your startup disk is almost full+
+You need to make more space available on your startup disk by deleting files.+
    1. What does this mean?
    2. Is this really affecting anything, the performance of my cpu?
    3. How do I fix this?
    Thanks!

I think the implementation of this function is seriously flawed. Not only do you get the message that OSX runs out of disk space, it will never finish erasing the empty space as always some files are created during the run, leaving not enough space to create the whole zero-file! At the end of the run, it sticks in a loop that tries to clear the last bits. Result: Disk Utility becomes non-responsive, and "Force Quit" leaves you with a unusable mac until you reboot.
I think this function should use direct drive access instead of using "zero filled" file creation within the OSX file system. You could choose to write two files covering each one half of the empty space, but I guess then there is a risk that the second file is (partly) written to the same location as the first one.
So this function needs to be rewritten in a way it clears all empty sectors without actually occupying it with real files. In that case, there is no big deal when OSX decides to write something in the empty space during the wiping.
    - Decide which sectors need to be erased
    - Start wiping these sectors with direct hard-drive access, not by writing files.
    - Exclude sectors that OSX writes too during operation from the to-do list.

  • Ipod - erased disk... now ipod only turns on and off

I had problems with my 3rd gen ipod skipping through songs. At the suggestion of the genius at the local apple store - I was to go to disk utility and erase my hard drive (using zero out function) and then reload my songs in itunes. about 4 hours into the operation nothing was happening - just a constant "scanning disk prior to erasing" message kept appearing. I finally disconnected the ipod and did a restart. Now the only thing happening is the i-pod just starts and stops and restarts - over and over again - showing the apple icon. System profiler show the ipod as an unknown device. disk utility does not recognize it as a disk. Can anybody help

  • Is there a way to reinstall windows 7 from an erased disk? HP support states there is

    Hello,
I completley erased the hardrive on a Compaq Presario CQ57 that I plan to sell.  I don't have the recovery discs to reinstall Windows 7 Professional 32 bit.
I phoned HP and they they told me that although the hard drive is wiped clean, there is a partition that still houses the operating system and does not require disks.  However, they stated they would have to charge an out-of-warranty fee of  $59.99 for the information on how to do this.  Declining such, they stated someone on the forum should be able to help.
I have searched the forum but have not found a way to restore Windows 7 on the notebook without recovery disks so far.  Was HP support mistaken about bein able to restore Windows without disks?
    Thank you.

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.

If you only erased the Windows partiton and left the factory recovery partition intact, then yes you can possible recovery the computer with out the discs. If you ereased the entire disc, there is no way to recover the computer to a factory like state without the HP Recovery Disc set.
Please enter you computer information HERE and select "Drivers", then the original OS to see if an HP Recovery Disc set is available from HP. You can also see if third party vendor www.computersurgeons.com has an HP Recovery Disc set available for your computer.
Alternatively, if you can still can still read the 25-digit product key on the Microsoft COA affixed to your computer, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download Windows 7, create the Windows installation media, and install Windows.  If you prefer to install Windows 7 from a USB Flash Drive, please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash Drive. Please note that you will have to source the needed drivers from HP or directly from the chipset manufacturer's websites. This method will result in a plain Windows installation with no HP customization.

  • Cannot erase disk

Recently, I had to reformat my drive. Having done that, I began experiencing problems with connecting to the internet, and I have been told that all I could do was reformat again and hope for good.
The thing is, it will not reformat anymore. An error message pops up saying "could not unmount disk".
Any advice on how to overcome the problem?
    Thanks!
