Erase failed restriction attempts

Our school gave us all ipads. i was exploring it when i came acroos the restrictions. i had no idea what it meant so I typed my regular password. It said "1 failed attempt" i kept trying until eventually it was disabled. i was somewhat confused by this. My friend then told me what it was about and the school was cracking down on so called "Hackers" like me who are trying to break into the system. There is a rumor going around that you could get suspended if they see that. i can't go tell them the truth because so many others have lied and said they didnt know what it was. They wouldn't believe me. I am wondering if there is a way to erase the failed attempts. Not the restrictions passcode. just the failed attempts. Our ipads are synced to the schools computer if that matters. If you could help me it would be much appreciated.

I've wondered about this too. I wondered whether on the ninth failed attempt if it would tell you that the data was about to be wiped out. Have you logged in successfully to see if maybe it the data was actually wiped out? Maybe it was designed so that even after wiping the data off, Apple wasn't just going to say, "OK, the reward for ten failed attempts (for someone who found or somehow happened upon an iPhone that wasn't theirs) is a clean iPhone, just like new!!"?

  • IPod Touch - Restrictions Four Digit Passcode - Failed Passcode Attempts?

I've have forgotten the restrictions four-digit passcode I set up on my iPod Touch. I've have so far entered the wrong passcode 11 times. I now have to wait one hour between each attempt.
Is there a limit to the number of attempts permitted?

There is a setting you can put on the Touch to erase the data after 10 failed passcode attempts. If you're sure you tried 11 times and your Touch did not erase, you must not have enabled that option.

  • Out of curiosity: Will Activation Lock still work after an iPhone auto-erases on the 10th failed passcode attempt?

Believe me, I'm no chicken when it comes to security. Using a combination of a strong alphanumeric passcode laced with non-Latin homoglyphs, Activation Lock (which Find My iPhone automatically enables), a disabled Siri when the phone is locked, a disabled Control Center when the phone is locked (both of those are security risks due to Airplane Mode), and Data Protection (erase phone after 10 failed passcode attempts), there's no doubt someone other than me is going to have a real hard time trying to use my device...
... Or so it seems. I've been digging through the Apple support articles to find out what exactly Activation Lock does, and I noticed that if someone goes into Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings and erases the device in a seemingly authorized manner, Activation Lock gets disabled with it. However, if someone else tries to erase it, or if it's erased remotely, then it will still display the Activation Lock message and require login with the username and passcode used to log in initially. Here's the real issue, though: Not one of those articles mentions what happens when you have Data Protection enabled and Data Protection happens to get set off by a thief attempting to brute force one's passcode, and how nicely Activation Lock plays with it. Does anyone else have that information, just in case?

While I have yet to confirm this with Apple, my understanding is that the auto-erase wil leave the Activation Lock intact. AL wouldn't be of much use if a thief could get around it by just entering in the wrong passcode multiple times. You'll forgive me though, I trust, if I don't try to test this with my own device.
    Regards.

  • Way tooooooo many Failed Passcode Attempts in the Restrictions section !

Hi, my 2 1/2 year-old daughter locked me in !
I usually lock the iPad using the Restrictions panel (General section in Settings) before giving her the device, and it happened several times that she handed it over to me... with the "6 Failed Passcode Attempts" red message in the Enter Passcode panel, which means she randomly tried typing digits in that area, which all failed, which is fine... except that I just found out that all of a sudden this time the Enter Passcode panel is now LOCKED for good and says "Try again in 220 174 minutes".
I sync'ed the device to my Mac to no avail following Apple knowledge base suggestion. I Guess these are just too many failed code attempts.
BTW I do backup (automatically in iTunes) regularly but I would like to save the restore hassle because of 32GB of data to restore (half the built-in 64GB) or I would like to be SURE that this cures the problem.
    Thanks in advance !

    There is an easier answer.
My kid's phone had the same problem.  I thought he was trying to hack the application restriction passcode but it turns out that he was rolling the system date forward to cheat in zombieville which apparently screwed up the lockout time restriction.
And this uncovered a loophole for bypassing the application restriction lockout.  If you can, just roll the system date forward past the lockout expiration and enter your passcode again.
    It worked for me.
This 'could' be used by a determined user to bypass the lockout feature and brute-force passcode-guess the phone (good luck with that!) but at least it allowed me to unlock the phone immediately instead of waiting the 19,200 minutes (aprox 2 week) lockout or having to factory-reset the phone like some folks apparently resorted to.
    Apple - don't fix this, it's not a bug, it's a feature.  Right?

  • Volume encrypt and erase failed; unable to delete core storage logical volume

I was attempting to slowly migrate [MI-***] from early 2013 MBPRO to New iMac 5K w/Ceiling Level components.
Kept going through LONG process and then told me it couldn't create [MBPRO HD Home Username] "Jim" on volume or whatever. NO FileVault enabling/ still skittish from White iMac Encrypting Nightmare days... I don't even know -- I guess it's encrypted on Airport, but not on MBPRO.
Moved over Applications from outside User account fine; anything inside any User account NOT FINE.
Hooked up Thunderbolt cable between two macs and restarted MBPRO in T mode... displaying the lightning BOLT on screen that moves around to reduce Burn-in.
Was able to go onto desktop and use windows to drag n drop 190G of movies over to iMac... wondering how I was going to get all right settings over form FCP...
Bottom Line: I only have 16G left on MBPRO and need to MOVE video editing to be exclusive on 3T Fusion on Maxed out iMac 5K.
    > Have concluded through whole process that I just want to clone the MBPRO and then delete most of the Larger Videos from MBPRO to recover some of my 760G SSD back.
So, I grabbed my 2T Airport Extreme and Hooked up the Cat5 LAN port to Cat5 input on back of NEW iMac; Now my MBPRO doesn't have to be locked up for days, because i can use TimeMachine backup to restore or clone the two macs... i hope.
Went into recovery mode and selected sub-Macintosh HD and attempted to erase; Result time after time after time: "Volume Encrypt and Erase failed." Reason: "Unable to delete the Core Storage logical volume." It dismounts it and I have to restart computer to get it back on. Funny thing is I don't have to use R anymore... which by the way, Command+R appears to be same as just plain old R when restarting... why is that?
This has become a "since Christmas" runaround session for me and I am sick of it.
Please help. I would've called Apple Care [and I did last night while driving... just to get advice on direction. I'm usually a pretty savvy PowerUser but this is driving me crazy.] but have to get things done for a meeting tomorrow. Can work on it after hours if someone can advise today on this post.
    Thx,
    Jim

I have taken some screenshots of the error I get and the state of my HDD in Disk Utility. I did have a weird thing happen after trying to repair using single user mode, where I reopened disk utility and the partitions were NOT greyed out and displayed the correct info concerning space available etc, although after verifying it then reverted back to greyed out with no info.

  • Help!! "Volume erase failed with the error"

I have no idea what to do ! My computer was running a bit slow and I wanted to get rid of any unwanted apps and files, so I backed up the files that I did want on an external drive. I then erased everything on my HD. Then I restarted it and attempted to reinstall the old apps from the cd that came with my computer but I couldn't. It takes me to the Utility Dock every time I restart it and when I try to install Lion back on, I can't click on the HD and it says it's 'locked'. When I try to reset it again or do anything at all it gives me a "Volume erase failed with the error" message. I can't do anything! Can anyone help???

    Replace the hard drive.
If it can't be erased, that usually means something is seriously wrong with it.

  • Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts

Having just upgraded to the latest 2.1 software there is now the security setting to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts - which I can't turn off as I am synching with work email. Can anyone confirm that this is 10 CONSECUTIVE attempts as 'fat finger syndrome' often means I take a couple of gos each time. Thanks!

A quick search of Apple Support yielded this:
"If you repeatedly enter the wrong passcode, iPhone or iPod touch will be disabled for longer intervals, before you can try again. After too many unsuccessful attempts, you won't be able to try again until you connect to the computer you normally sync with. Note that starting with iPhone 2.1 software, there is a setting to cause the device to erase itself after 10 consecutive incorrect password attempts. This setting is off by default. It can be turned on by tapping Settings > General > Passcode Lock after you enter a correct passcode."

You can search Apple support for this as well. It is probably in the manual as well:

  • 10 failed passcode attempts but nothing happened, help?

So I got 10 failed passcode attempts on my iPod but it did not erase it's data. I had the option ticked to do so, any help?

Reset your device by holding the sleep/wake and home (shown below) buttons until the apple logo pops up, that should solve the problem. Don't worry it's completely harmless.  Then, make sure it's on and try failing 10 times again

When you are on 32-bit system - Linux can handle files not longer than 2Gb (The limitation is due to 32-bit integer size, which gives the largest possible file of 2^31-1 bytes).
In most Linux kernels however, changes have been made to support large files: http://www.suse.de/~aj/linux_lfs.html and http://people.redhat.com/berrange/notes/largefile.html
Something to note: Some Linux distributions may contain a software file size limit as a default installation, most common
is 1GB restriction. To check your system execute the 'ulimit -f' command. If the resulting printout is "unlimited" there is
    no software limits.
If it is the case that your system does not support large files, you can edit the logging in weblogic such that the
log files are rotated when they reach certain size. (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E21764_01/apirefs.1111/e13952/taskhelp/logging/ConfigureAndViewLogs.html)

  • 10 failed passcode attempts

I Have 10 failed passcode attempts. What will happen if i enter it wrong once again? As far as i recall, i had not selected the 'erase all data' option. Please help me.

Well, due to forgotten passcode device needs to be restored and setup as a new device. Suppose that you've backup, do not install it since, backup also including passwords.
If you ve iCloud account signed in device, check your contacts on icloud.com see if it's synced or not.
Besides, you can try to import photos/videos manually to PC if you connect device to PC before and tap on trust before. Otherwise, you can view the content before unlocking screen.

Unfortunately, all failed login attempts are stored on each clients' local drive. There is no table to hold them.

  • External Drive Disk Erase Failed with the Error Input/Output Error

I have 2 hard drives in an external FW800 enclosure that I am unable to format. When I go to initialize the drives in Disk Utility, I get the following error message: "Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/output error."
The drives show up in Disk Utility, but I can't repair them (that option is grayed out). Disk Utility correctly ID's the manufacturer of the drives (Maxtor), their size (200gb each), so it's obviously seeing that the drives are there. But it won't let me format them.
The drives are new, by the way; they don't have any data/files on them. I have Disk Warrior, but the drives don't show up there to be repaired -- probably because they aren't formatted yet.
After looking at other posts, I tried switching the jumper settings around on the drives -- from Master/Slave to cable select and back again, but it didn't help. I also tried doing a zero erase (even though the drives are new), zapping the PRAM -- again, no help.
One question I had is whether this could be a bad FW800 cable? The cable is new -- it came with the enclosure, which is an OWC Dual FW 800 enclosure. Other than that, does anyone have any other thoughts about what's causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    SOLUTION!!!!
I had the exact same problem. I have the original 20 GB hard drive that came in my Powerbook G4 550MHz and a couple of years ago I traded up for a 60 GB drive and bought a FW/USB enclosure for my original drive to use it to backup my important files. I hadn't backed up in over a year (shame on me!) and I decided maybe I should erase the drive and start from scratch. It was connected via USB.
At that point DiskUtility gave me the exact same Input/Output error. I tried partitioning the drive into 1 or more partitions but came up with the same error. I couldn't figure out what was wrong so I decided to startup in OS 9.2.2, I did that and let it start up, then plugged in the hard drive and it gave me the standard "This disk is unrecognizable, do you want to eject or erase?" so I clicked Initalize. It worked!
Just make sure you choose the MacOS Extended option when initializing out of OS 9 (instead of the MacOS Standard option) so it can be read and viewed in OS X.
If your computer is too new to be able to boot from an OS 9 folder on your drive or an OS 9 CD, then see if a friend or a local library has older computers that are running OS 9 or can boot from it. If not let me know and you can send me your drive and I'll reformat it.
Kind of crazy...I haven't used the OS 9 partition on my HD in YEARS...was even thinking about erasing it since I don't use any Classic applications anymore...good thing I didn't!
