Erase hard drive on macbook
I am sending in my old macbook for recycling. How do I wipe it clean before mailing it?
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Shut down the computer.

If your MacBook and your iMac have firewire ports you can install by Target Disk Mode. You'll need a retail version of a Mac OS to do this if you don't have your MacBook's gray install disks.
Start up your iMac with your install disk. After you get to the install screen on your iMac connect your MacBook to your iMac in "Target Mode" with a firewire cable http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Then open "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities Menu" on the Menu Bar from the install disk on your iMac. You should see both your MacBook and your iMac hard drives in there. Erase and partition your MacBook drive and then choose that drive when you go back to the install screen. -
Can't erase hard drive on macbook pro
I've used up all the space on my Macbook Pro and I want to clean it all off, as I do art and college work on it. I have saved the files on USB sticks and I can install the applications and programs I need back off the internet. However, when I look through the internet, they say that I should go to Disk Utility and select the hard drive and click erase. I have done this, but it doesn't give me the option. The button to click is dull and is not highlighted, not allowing me to erase it. I am also worried about getting back on, because some people claim that they have to reinstall OS with a CD, and mine never came with one as I got this laptop in late August 2013. I don't know how to erase it, as I've had this for nearly a year and I haven't erased it once. Please help, as I need to erase it ASAP!
If you got it new in August 2013, there aren’t any disks. Restart it with the Command and R keys held down instead.
Regardless of what model it is, you’ll need to restart from an alternate system, such as a DVD or the recovery partition, before you’ll be able to erase the partition containing the primary one.

Depending on where you are located, country, region, etc, you may have options should
you wish to have it professionally restored or repaired to function properly again...
Even an Apple Store with Genius bar could, in several locations, give the product a look
and perhaps be able to diagnose the underlying issues. However that varies with the
degree of failed components and what is really wrong with it. A battery and a new HDD
could be all that's wrong with it. A diagnostic is often free, even on out-of-warranty Mac
at the Apple Store genius bar; an appointment is advised.
However if you only wanted someone to extract the hard disk drive and attach it to
a 'universal USB drive adapter kit' so at to try and access any readable files on it,
that is something that could be done at an Apple Authorized service provider; as
some of them may even have a section of resale products such as this adapter kit.
An example of this kind of kit includes wires, adapter parts, & a separate power supply
so it can be used to run the hard drive's electronics. This is not intended for permanent
use, but works like a set of patch cables to access the bare drive without an enclosure.

on a repair and the good ones can do that without a fee; they will not start a repair after they
see the computer until you get the estimate, and approve of the repair. If other items are
found to be of interest requiring other work or parts, they will also contact you, again before
continuing. One of these kinds of companies I know about (half a hemisphere away) is in

Any concerns about the data on the hard disk drive should be able to be answered by a
local Apple independent; they also should have the universal USB drive adapter locally.

Install Yosemite instead of Mavericks. Or you can do the following if your computer supports Internet Recovery:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. -
Hey guys.
Basically i have sold my iMac after buying a new Macbook Pro. I erased hard drive in disc utility then reinstalled Lion from disc.
When i turn on the iMac now it does the usual welcome video, then proceeds to try and set up the machine. Which i dont want to do as i have sold it and he will want to do that himself.
Dont personally know the guy ive sold it too so basically i want to know how i can check to see if my files have actually been deleted?
Just so all my personal information isnt accessed by someone else.
Thanks a lotIf you erased the disk, the data is gone. If you want to be sure, you can open Disk Utiility again and erase the disk using a special method (select the hard disk > Erase > Security Options) before installing Mac OS X

Thanks for the reply, held command+R again and it is trying to pick up WiFi, but it's not picking up my network and won't accept the password even when I try to put it in manually. Any thoughts on that?
Me too had tried the command+R and failed to manually connect to my network. Can anyone help?Well, it was solved. I shifted to other place and tried other WIFis. One of the WiFi had the 2002f problem and another was fine, so the reinstall worked smoothly eventually.
On the apple support page it says that Supported network configurations and protocols includs both WPA/WPA2, not matter what they are, but it might not be true. -

Startup with the Snow Leopard installation disk ALREADY IN THE DRIVE.
If it pops out, push it back in during startup. It will take a long time, but be patient. -
I have an 8 year old eMac G3. It will not start up. I need to erase it before putting it in recycling. Apple refuses to open the case and warns me that I will be shocked if I even try. They say no way to erase hard drive. They say use a hammer. Any ideas?

Trying to back up to external hard drive (iomega). Instructions say to erase hard drive. Won't entirely erase. Can't enter iomega in Time Machine. Computer is minimac, operating system is OSx 10.6.8.
All you need to upgrade the iBook for Tiger is another 128 MBs of RAM. It has both Firewire and USB ports. You do want to upgrade it for what you plan to do. The problem you may continue to have, however, may be due to the fact that the age of the computer is such the disk controller does not support hard drive volumes larger than 128 GBs, which is probably the reason the drive won't mount.
The reason you get DU errors is likely because the drive was formatted using the Intel Tiger version of DU, while you were using the Jaguar version. That's a definite no-no. -

Hi I replaced my hard drive on macbook and I want to install mac osx10.5 with the CD that came with the macbook. When I run the CD after a while I get the page showing language options for 2 second then a gray screen appears and nothing happens. I partitioned my hard drive and I tried installing Microsoft windows and that worked just fine. But I do not understand why it wont install mac os x 10.5????? PLEASE HELP ME. Thanks Hamid
