Erase & Install OS X, how to restore my original settings

So my 12" PB G4 was having some issues the past couple of months. After reading through many posts on this board, and a couple of Apple articles, I decided to erase and install OS X again.
My system is 4 years old (came with Jaguar), I bought a copy of OS X Tiger two years ago and installed that on my system. I backup my system daily with an external hard drive (LaCie silver keeper software).
So the other day I did a full "erase & install" of OS X, to clear the system completely. I then dragged my "user" from my backup drive to my internal drive. Most everything is the same. My desktop folders, wallpaper etc... are back to normal.
BUT, my iTunes is a complete mess. I do not have any of my playlists, ratings, play counts. I had to update a lot of programs, such as iTunes, Quicktime, iLife apps. Because Quicktime was not updated, iTunes could not play video, so now none of my videos are in my iTunes player.
I thought EVERYTHING was backed up. What am i doing wrong? Have I gotten over my head, do I need to go to the Apple store and have a genius take care of this?

Did you try using Tiger's "Migration Assistant" application? I have mixed reactions suggesting this to you because it caused me a LOT of headaches when I upgraded from Panther to Tiger.
So as long as you keep the backup data intact (meaning, don't automatically throw it out and delete it once you've migrated the data), you can always start over again.
The thing is, not everything will be exactly the way it is unless the applications installed on your system match what was on your previous system. So before running any software updates, install a "bare bones" installation of Tiger onto your system.
In fact, if you want and have the time and patience (since you have a complete backup), completely ZERO OUT your hard drive and install a fresh copy of Tiger onto your system.
Then, startup and let the system go. Don't opt for Migration Assistant at startup. Do that later. When it goes through, do not do any automatic software updates.
Next, create a secondary account with administrator privileges. Restart.
When you turn on again, choose your secondary account, and run Migration Assistant. (I forgot to say, make sure the account name on the secondary account matches your backup data's account). Restart, then do any Software Updates.
Now that you've got everything in order, try out to see if all your files/setting/etc. were the way it used to be. Migration Assistant does everything for you, but it isn't without its faults. But more times than not, it works.
The only caveat here is that your external drive needs to be FireWire. So if your LaCie drive is USB 2.0, you'll have to clone and/or copy over the data from that drive onto a FireWire drive before you can use Migration Assistant.
Though some like to drag and drop, OS X is not built like Mac OS 9 where you could simply replace the new with the old by dragging and dropping and throwing things out. OS X has hidden files that you can't see, etc. Simply dragging and dropping a user account folder to replace the old won't work like it used to.

* If, on Windows, in Firefox 3.6 the menu bar is hidden then press and hold the Alt key down or press F10, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear
* Go to "View > Toolbars" and check-mark "Menu Bar" with a click on it to make that permanent. See [[Menu bar is missing]]).
* Make sure that you have the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"
* If items are missing then see if you can find them in the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window
* If you see the item in the Customize window then drag it back from the Customize window to one of the toolbars.
* If, in "View > Toolbars > Customize", you do not see that item then click the "Restore Default Set" button

Best way would be to just grab the pen tool and recreate the illustration using your photo as a guide, or if you trust your precision just use the brush tool and draw on top using sampled colos. Restoration using pixel-based methods will be time consuming, there's too much texture and too many cracks.

Don't post in all caps. Besides being more difficult to read it's tantamount to shouting and is considered rude in forums. What problems are you having? What model Mac do you have, how much RAM and free space on the boot drive?
Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and try the following in order as needed:
1 - select Disk Utility and repair both the disk and disk permissions. Reboot normally.
2 - reinstall the Mavericks system.

Hi cfgolf,
Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities. I agree with your assessment that something is going on with that previous backup. If you restored from that backup and the issue continues, I would recommend restoring and Set up as new. Before you restore, make sure you Transfer content so that you can sync it back after setting up as new. The instructions on how to Transfer content and Set up as new are both listed in this article.
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4137
2. Transfer content
Before you erase your device, take a few minutes to transfer your content from your device to your computer to ensure that all your critical data is safe.
6. Set up as new
Complete the setup assistant. When prompted to set up your device, select Set Up as New iPhone and tap Next to continue.
Skip the Apple ID sign-in, in case the original issue was related to any of your content on iCloud.
Note: After setting up as new, you will need to enter the Visual Voicemail password for iPhone (on carriers that support Visual Voicemail). If you've forgotten the password, contact your carrier to help you reset it.
After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior.
If the issue is still present, you may want to contact Apple Support.
If the issue is now resolved, sync one type of content at a time back to the device. For example, if you had an issue playing music, add songs from iTunes and confirm they will play. If your contacts weren't loading successfully, add the contacts back. After each sync, test to see if the issue has returned.
Cheers,
-Joe

• HT201250 Will using AirPort Utility to "restore to original settings" make you have to re-back up your computer's files on a Time Capsule?

Will using AirPort Utility to "restore to original settings" make you have to re-back up your computer's files on a Time Capsule?

The advantage is CCC has built in routines that "bless" (see the Terminal.app command "bless") the
os x installation so it will boot properly on the new volume it is being installed on.
Disk Utility simply copies (restores) files from one volume to another. Many times this works just fine.
Sometimes it won't boot afterwards. Most of the time (as long as there are no system files missing
or corrupted) a person may "bless" the drive and restore it to working condition.
CCC is not a "magical" application, it is in fact a front end to applications that already exist separately
in OS X (asr, hdiutil, diskutil, bless, etc.).
It doesn't matter to me how you do it. It's your time not mine. Everyone should spend some time
behind the command line in terminal. I do many tasks using the command line, including and not
limited to complete system restores, backing up data, disk partitioning, installing software, disk
repair, permissions repair, ACL management, restoring data, managing disk images, network
management, user management, file management, etc. Many people are fearful of the command
line. I feel just the opposite, I'm fearful without it.

Can you help me to retrieve my applications. In iTunes I accidentally clicked the Restore button in the Summary screen. It restored the original settings and I lost all my applications and don't know if it is possible to retrieve them.

All apps on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch should be in your iTunes library on your computer.
You can re-download all 3rd party apps and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the apps that was used to purchase the app originally.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
Do this with iTunes on your computer. After you have re-downloaded every app one by one, select Sync Apps under the Apps tab for the device's sync preferences along with selecting the apps below that you want transferred to the device followed by a sync to re-install the apps on the device.

• While updating software on my iPod touch 4 my computerswitched itself off and now iTunes is asking me to restore to original settings but there are photos on my iPod that have not been backed up. Am I going to lose them?

While updating software on my iPod touch my computer switched itself off and now iTunes is asking me to restore to original settings. I have photos on my iPod that were not backed up so will I lose them if I resore to original settings? If so is there any way I can get them back?

After you restore to factory settings/new iPod you can restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
That is your only choice

Can I my stuff back through iCloud??

Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
The good news part only happens if you had a backup.

• Restoring to original settings

Please see my other discussion regarding recovery mode
However, if I restore to original settings it then gives me the warning about going back to factory settings - Does this mean I will ose everything I have previously backed up?
Thanks in advance

As was mentioned. If you have made a back up of your phone there is no need to worry about losing your data. Make sure you transfer all your purchased apps or any purchased contents that you downloaded from your iphone. If you don't transfer them, you won't get them back when you restore from back up.

- Still keep the MODE button pressed until the Status LED turns to red and then release it:
2. Via installing the recovery image:
- Download the recovery image for 3500 from Cisco site.
- on AP Console write the command "Debug capwap console cli".
- Then write the commadn "Archive download-sw /overwrite /reload tftp:///"

• I changed my browser url to blank now I cannot find bookmarks or menu toolbar, pls can someone tell me how to restore to original url setting?

I tried to remove thumbnails from Firefox & following online advice went to browser.newtab.url and changed it to "blank", now when I open Firefox the menu bar with bookmarks etc is missing, but when I open a new tab the thumbnail images are still there, I don't have much experience & would appreciate advice as to how to restore. I tried restoring computer to earlier time but that didn't not restore the browser url to the state before I started messing with it. Please help!

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: Command+Shift+F).
If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top of the screen to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.
Click the Maximize button (top right corner of the Navigation Toolbar) to leave full screen mode or right-click empty space on a toolbar and choose "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press the F11 key.
You can use one of these to set which toolbars to show.
*"3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
*View > Toolbars
Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar
*Right-click empty toolbar area
What is the current value of the browser.newtab.url pref?
If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
You can create a new Boolean pref on the about:config page to prevent Firefox from generating thumbnails for the about:newtab page.
*name: browser.pagethumbnails.capturing_disabled with value: true
Delete the thumbnails folder in the Firefox profile folder to remove already stored web page thumbnails.
