Erase Junk Mail Button greyed out

In Yosemite, 10.10.1 with mail 8.1 (1993) the Erase Junk Mail options are greyed out, both in the menu and the action menu at the bottom left of the mail viewer window. I cannot figure out how to get it back. I've rebuilt my mailboxes. It happens on all of the accounts. I have an iCloud account, a gmail account and several pop accounts.

I had this problem and was able to solve it by enabling junk mail filtering.  I had it turned on before in Mavericks, but apparently that setting didn't come over for some reason or other.  Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail > Checked the box next to Enable junk mail filtering  I personally like the When junk mail arrives:  Move it to the Junk mailbox, so I selected the appropriate radio button for that as well.  Good Luck and hope this helps!  

All of a sudden, "Erase Junk Mail" is grayed out.
Anyone know why or how I can get it working again?

  • "Erase Junk "Mail" button is not active

I just went into mail and saw that I had 4 emails in my junk folder. I went up mailbox>erase junk mail, but the button was dead - greyed out. I had to drag the junk mail to the trash folder and then empty trash. Is there a problem here or a fix?

As it works just fine in my installations I agree that something may be scrambled, but it is not general, boot into safe mode and try again, post back.

  • Erase Junk mail is grayed out and won't work

I just upgraded to 10.5 and my erase junk mail will not work. I have tried rebuilding the box but it still won't work

For what type of account - IMAP or POP?
If a POP account, quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Junk.mbox.
Delete the Junk.mbox and empty the Trash. This will delete the account's Junk mailbox and all junk messages within.
Launch Mail, and a new Junk.mbox will be created automatically within the account named folder when the next message received is automatically or manually marked as junk and moved to the account's Junk mailbox.
Test if this resolve the problem.

  • Why is "Mailbox Erase Junk Mail" always grayed-out in Mail 4.5?

    Anybody know the answer?

This is a User to User forum, and Apple rep don't frequent very often.
I have read a great many of the posts in all versions of Mail, and have never found this to be common, nor have I ever experienced it with any of my 15 accounts.
Is this a POP account, or IMAP?

  • Old mail keeps coming back? & Junk Mail Delete grayed out.

    Issue 1
Old mail, dated from previous months, keeps appearing, mainly in Trash.
I read some Discussion about 'ipurge,' -- I tried it as a Terminal command but said it wasn't there.
I checked with the mail server - Google -- and the emails are not there...
    Issue 2
Also, on Mail menu>Mailboxes>Erase Junk Mail is grayed out.....and maybe this happen after starting to use a spam filter (SpamSieve).
I sure wish I didn't get so much spam. My email address must have recently gotten picked up...it's disgusting.

    ONE DAY LATER -
From another thread I got the idea to check out these ever returning trashed emails. The idea there was to delete Google's Junk folder.
Did that but it didn't seem to solve the problem although the idea of investigating the Google Mail Server.
That led to discover that after clicking on Trash/Delete for emails they went into a Trash folder -- and stayed there -- and a 2nd trashing was necessary and there was a tab/button saying: DELETE FOVEVER, which sort of implies that Trashed items hang around and require this 2nd trashing, with clicking DELETE FOREVER (see photo).
I'll see what happens over the next few days.

  • Why is Erase Junk Mail greyed out?

In Apple Mail, there is a command I previously used under the Mailbox menu - "Erase Junk Mail" - which is now greyed out (not available). I have a Junk mailbox and I have tried selecting the entire mailbox or a single message in this mailbox, but the command stays greyed out. Why? How do I make this an actice command?

I know it's a long time since your post but I just found the answer as I was having the same problem.
I had set up advanced preferences.
I reverted to "Move it to the junk mailbox" and the menu item was restored.

  • "Erase Junk Mail" grayed out

When I want to delete the mail in my Junk mailbox, the "Erase Junk Mail" option is grayed out. The "Erase Deleted Messages" option works fine for the other mailboxes. Anyone know how I can fix this problem? Now I have to "select all" and then delete, and that's a three-step pain.

if you select the main junk mailbox, the delete button is greyed out, so you have to select a specific junk mailbox associated with an email account of yours. If that does not work then try the following:
    1) quit mail, reboot computer, launch mail again, does that solve the problem?
    if does not help then
    2) launch mail, select each of your junk mailboxes, not the main one, then go to mailbox>rebuild and rebuild each of these junk mailboxes
    if does not help then
    3) go to applications>utilities>disk utility and repair permissions - may take awhile to let the process run its course
if does not help, then let me know
    hope this helps

  • "Erase Junk Mail" 10.7 Mail Grayed Out

For the last few months, maybe even since I upgraded to 10.7 from 10.6 several months ago, I have noticed that the "Erase Junk Mail" under "Mailbox" is grayed out even though there are emails in the junk mail folder.
Also when I go to search I no longer can select, or even find, the "From" option.
It's most likely me just not seeing it.
I have rebuilt all the folders.
    Thanks for your help.

Found the problem myself in another thread.
"The problem was that I was playing with the Junk Mail preferences to improve the junk mail filter and accidentally selected "Perform custom actions"."

  • Erase Junk Mail function disabled!

Hello folks, for some reason my "Erase Junk Mail" menu options are greyed out and disabled.
I cannot empty my Junk Mail folders.
I've quit and restarted Mail. No help. Didn't seem to have this problem in 10.5.7.
    Ideas?

Do you have "perform custom actions" checked in the Junk preferences? If you do, the Erase Junk Mail option will be grayed out.

  • After 10.9.4 Update: Mail Messages Grey Out Upon Deleting-Don't Move to Trash?

    Hello,
After 10.9.4 Update/MacBook Pro with Retina display: Mail Messages Grey Out Upon Deleting-Don't Move to Trash? I believe I must join those who are having trouble with mail after this latest update. Deleted messages just turn a light grey in the message panel and don't move to trash until after I quit and restart mail. I have also experienced the screen "Freezing" ... no spinning beach ball, just the pointer frozen. This has happened only when I use mail and requires a "hard" re-start to correct.  Is this a "feature" of the update, or is it a problem? Thanks!

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
Quit Mail and empty the Trash. If you still can't, log out or restart the computer.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
This action will delete any custom Mail stationery that you have created. If you want to preserve it, ask for instructions.
If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Agent email help - buttons greyed out at one location

The setup:  Two call centers.  One in NC and one in CA.
The one in NC, which is where the call center servers are, has no issues with email buttons becoming active.
The one in CA, every morning when the agents login the email buttons will not become active unless the users do the following workaround
    Start agent.
Run and IE url that was given to me by Cisco.  http://<ipaddress of ccx server/EemUi/index.jsp?port=59015
This will force Java to start and have the java icon appear in the system tray.
    Email buttons become active
Close IE window (which make email buttons grey out again)
    close and restart agent
    Email buttons work.
I only have this issue in the CA office.
I had them ship a desktop to me in the NC office.  I connected it and did NOT have an issue.  Everything works perfectly here.
Is the issue tied to the distance?  Is there some java time out setting I can tweek to make this work.
I didn't have this problem with 8.5 su 2.... it happened after the update to su 3
Anyone seen this?  Cisco has no answer.

I bounced this around the office to get some ideas.  One question - how long is the CA office waiting for the email buttons to become active?  That is, setting the workaround aside, if they wait long enough, do the Agent E-Mail buttons ever become active?    The thinking is that could be a factor as the entire applet is around 40 MB. If connection speed isn't great it could take a while to download which would explain the scenario.

  • IDEA: Junk Mail Button on WebMail Sync with Mail.app

Feature Request to Apple / .Mac
    JUNK MAIL BUTTON ON WEBMAIL
Recently I have had to log into the .Mac website to read my email via the WebMail page. I usually read my email on my Powerbook with the Apple Mail app. I was astonished to see how much spam I was receiving! Mail.app was doing a fantastic job filtering out the junk mail (Kudos to the Mail developers). But that only happens on the client locally, not on the server. WebMail is almost unusable for me!
Wouldn't it be awesome if there were a "Junk" button on the web interface that saved the Junk filter on the server like it does on Mail.app??? I think gmail and others do this. But Apple has a huge edge here. Perhaps using iSync, the Mail.app could syncronize the Junk rules and my personal filters with the WebMail server. I would gladly PAID EXTRA for this feature!!! As far as I can tell, no other application/service does this (syncronized filters). Here's the kicker: on one of these discussion boards we could post filters for one click sharing. So if I come up with a great filter for screening out "male impotence mortgage stock market plans" spam that works well, I could share it with you. Maybe it could integrate with Brightmail?
I would love to hear an Apple Mail.app product manager reply to this idea. I think this is a service that Apple could make some money on, and satisfy customers at the same time.
Please post a reply here if you think this idea is good or *****.
    Cheers,
    +Eric Mittler

    Hi Eric
you should probably submit your idea to http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
I don't use webmail myself - so I'm not well placed to judge it.
