Erase Junk Mail Not Selectable

When I activate the Perform Custom Actions feature in Mail > Preference >Junk Mail, why does the menu command for Erase Junk Mail immediately become gray? All I want to do is change the color that gets assigned to Junk Mail messages.

Problem solved. If you use iCloud under Mavericks (I do) , rules and signatures are not stored in ~/Library/Mail. They're stored in ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~mail. When I restored that folder from an earlier Time Machine backup, all of my rules and signatures reappeared.

  • Why "erase junk mail" not active?

I have junk mail filtering checked as well as advanced criteria for filtering. Before that I had junk mail turned off for a few days. Now, since I turned it back on, it does not allow erasing the mail in the junk mail folder. In the past I had no trouble with this. What gives?

  • Feature Request: Option to not require confirmation of erasing Junk Mail

Many (maybe most) choices that bring up a confirmation dialog allow the user to bypass the dialog by pressing the Option key. I hope that this capability will be extended to erasing Junk Mail in the Mail app (and, wishing here) to erasing deleted items as well. In all the years I've been using the Mac and supporting Mac users, I have only encountered two instances where the confirmation got a cancellation of the erasure and requiring the Option key to bypass would not have affected those users. Meanwhile, the rest of us have to grab our pointing device to confirm, since Cancel is the default. Lots of wasted motion for an infinitesimal safeguard.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • "Erase Junk "Mail" button is not active

I just went into mail and saw that I had 4 emails in my junk folder. I went up mailbox>erase junk mail, but the button was dead - greyed out. I had to drag the junk mail to the trash folder and then empty trash. Is there a problem here or a fix?

As it works just fine in my installations I agree that something may be scrambled, but it is not general, boot into safe mode and try again, post back.

  • Mail 2.0.5: Can the confirmation dialog on "Erase Junk Mail" be turned off?

Subject says it all, really. Does anyone know of a way to turn off the confirmation dialog when you Erase Junk Mail in Mail 2.0.5? Maybe some config file I can manually edit or something...?

I'm not sure about a config file that can be manually edited but you can select automatically erase messages in an account's Junk mailbox which is available under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the preferences for each account and no confirmation dialog will be provided.
The confirmation dialog is only provided when doing a manual Erase Junk Mail.

  • Erase junk mail

The erase junk mail command (mailbox-erase junk mail) is dimmed. I have tried everything I know and cannot use this option. I have junk mail set to erase when one day old but this does not always work. I tried erase when quitting mail but really would like to erase when I see the junk mailbox filling. Does anyone know how to activate the "erase junk mail" command. I used this extensively in Panther and have just upgraded computer and OS to leopard. The option remains dimmed and not usable.

Do you have a Junk Mail folder to erase?
If not, in Mail Preferences > Junk Mail, select Move it to the Junk mailbox, to create the Junk Mailbox.
If there is any junk mail in it, then the Erase Junk Mail choice will be available.

  • "Erase Junk Mail" 10.7 Mail Grayed Out

For the last few months, maybe even since I upgraded to 10.7 from 10.6 several months ago, I have noticed that the "Erase Junk Mail" under "Mailbox" is grayed out even though there are emails in the junk mail folder.
Also when I go to search I no longer can select, or even find, the "From" option.
It's most likely me just not seeing it.
I have rebuilt all the folders.
    Thanks for your help.

Found the problem myself in another thread.
"The problem was that I was playing with the Junk Mail preferences to improve the junk mail filter and accidentally selected "Perform custom actions"."

  • "Erase Junk Mail" grayed out

When I want to delete the mail in my Junk mailbox, the "Erase Junk Mail" option is grayed out. The "Erase Deleted Messages" option works fine for the other mailboxes. Anyone know how I can fix this problem? Now I have to "select all" and then delete, and that's a three-step pain.

if you select the main junk mailbox, the delete button is greyed out, so you have to select a specific junk mailbox associated with an email account of yours. If that does not work then try the following:
    1) quit mail, reboot computer, launch mail again, does that solve the problem?
    if does not help then
    2) launch mail, select each of your junk mailboxes, not the main one, then go to mailbox>rebuild and rebuild each of these junk mailboxes
    if does not help then
    3) go to applications>utilities>disk utility and repair permissions - may take awhile to let the process run its course
if does not help, then let me know
    hope this helps

  • Why is Erase Junk Mail greyed out?

In Apple Mail, there is a command I previously used under the Mailbox menu - "Erase Junk Mail" - which is now greyed out (not available). I have a Junk mailbox and I have tried selecting the entire mailbox or a single message in this mailbox, but the command stays greyed out. Why? How do I make this an actice command?

I know it's a long time since your post but I just found the answer as I was having the same problem.
I had set up advanced preferences.
I reverted to "Move it to the junk mailbox" and the menu item was restored.

  • Erase Junk Mail Button greyed out

In Yosemite, 10.10.1 with mail 8.1 (1993) the Erase Junk Mail options are greyed out, both in the menu and the action menu at the bottom left of the mail viewer window. I cannot figure out how to get it back. I've rebuilt my mailboxes. It happens on all of the accounts. I have an iCloud account, a gmail account and several pop accounts.

I had this problem and was able to solve it by enabling junk mail filtering.  I had it turned on before in Mavericks, but apparently that setting didn't come over for some reason or other.  Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail > Checked the box next to Enable junk mail filtering  I personally like the When junk mail arrives:  Move it to the Junk mailbox, so I selected the appropriate radio button for that as well.  Good Luck and hope this helps!  

  • Disable "Erase Junk Mail" and "Erase Deleted Items" Confirmation

Does anyone know of a way to disable the confirmation dialoge box that appears when you right-click on an account in Mail 5.2 and select "Erase Junk Mail" or "Erase Deleted Items"? I've tried holding down Option and then selecting the item, but that doesn't remove the confirmation dialoge.
I'd like to remove the confirmation dialoge completely as it just adds an extra step to something that is otherwise a quick operation to clear out junk mail.

For what type of account - IMAP or POP?
If a POP account, quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Junk.mbox.
Delete the Junk.mbox and empty the Trash. This will delete the account's Junk mailbox and all junk messages within.
Launch Mail, and a new Junk.mbox will be created automatically within the account named folder when the next message received is automatically or manually marked as junk and moved to the account's Junk mailbox.
Test if this resolve the problem.

  • Erase Junk Mail is Dimmed

Until recently I was able to "right" click on the Junk Mail folder in the Mail.app and select Erase Junk Mail. Now when I bring up the contextual menu Erase Junk Mail is dimmed as is Erase Junk Mail from the Mailbox menu is also dimmed. Any ideas?

Agreed. I had just changed my Junk Mail preferences to "Perform Custom Actions" and the same thing happened to me - no more "Erase Junk Mail".
Changing the preference item back to "Move it to the Junk mailbox" restored the "Erase Junk Mail" functionality. BTW: hitting the reset button wasn't required.
Personally, I think this is a nice little bug.

  • "Erase Junk Mail" disabled

I've been having this problem for a while now. In Mail.app, the "Erase Junk Mail" menu item is disabled, and cmd-opt-J just gives an error beep.
It's easy enough to work around. All I have to do is go to my Junk mail folder, select all the messages, press Delete, and then select Erase Deleted Messages, which does work. Still, it would be nice to fix this little glitch.

Have you tried changing Preferences such that the option under "When Junk Mail arrives" is changed back to "Mark as Junk Mail, but leave it in my inbox". Close Mail then re-open. Change the option back so that "Move it to the Junk Mail" is re-enabled and see if that solves the problem. The other alternative is to "Reset" filtering which means that all the "training" that has taken place will be lost.

  • Erase Junk mail is grayed out and won't work

I just upgraded to 10.5 and my erase junk mail will not work. I have tried rebuilding the box but it still won't work
