Erase MacBook without screen

My early 2008 MacBook Pro has a black screen due to a bad logic board. It would not be worth it to repair it but would instead like to sell it but I need to erase it and reset to factory settings. Would there be any way to do this without a screen?

  • Using macbook without screen

    Hey guys,
My logic board is broken, so I can't see anything when the computer is running. The actual computer is running in the background, so I can open stuff etc. I tried an HDMI cable but it won't work. I can open itunes etc, I hear sound from the laptop from the music when I manage to open iTunes.
Is there a way to activate screenshare by keyboard? I can open any program by hotkeys, I know em all
An example is skype screenshare, it takes alot of guessing and clicking to actually get into a call and then its also really hard to press twice on the screenshare button. So I am thinking. Is there any other alternative for screensharing easily?
    Jesse.

I have an iPhone 4, My itunes are from two differnt accounts; one from when I was under my dads account when i was younger, and the other is my own which i currently use. My question is would I be able to sync and update my itunes on my MacBook without having all the new music erased. I have the icloud on my phone, but I just want to update my music on my laptop. Just nervous to, because it has happened to me before on a desktop computer  and it *****. Please help! Thanks.

  • How do I sync my iPhone to my MacBook without having to erase everything?

    Hi,
I've had my iPhone for a little over a year now, and it used to be synced with a PC desktop. This summer, I got a MacBook Pro, and moved my iTunes library over to the MacBook using an external hard drive (which I struggled with - I lost all my playlists and a couple dozen songs, but I've sort of figured it out). But I still haven't synched my iPhone to my MacBook yet. I'm in college, so I decided that when I came home, I would try and sync it, because just in case anything goes wrong, I would be at home where the desktop is.
So I homeshared a couple of albums with my sister onto my MacBook, and when I tried to sync my iPhone to my MacBook, it told me that I would have to erase everything to be able to sync it to that computer.
I called Apple and talked to them (with little success) about how to avoid erasing everything, but they said I don't have many options, and that the iTunes back up only backs up "iTunes purchases." Obviously, all my music isn't purchased on iTunes, so I really don't want to lose half of my iTunes library.
My problem is that I can't figure out how to be able to sync my iPhone to my MacBook without erasing everything. I'm not able to come home frequently enough to be able to get new music onto my MacBook, homeshare it with the desktop, and then sync my iPhone to the desktop. Especially after I graduate, I really don't want to be tied down to the desktop at my parent's house.
How can I fix this? The Apple guy said that Apple products are "monogomous" - they only like to be synched to one computer. How can I switch computers without losing everything on my iPhone?
    Please help!

  • Macbook Pro Screen wakes up from sleep without any acitvity

I've set my MacBook Pro screen to turn off after two minutes of activity. I've had this setting for all my Macs and I've never had any problems.
Recently though, my MacBook Pro's screen turns on by itself without me touching the computer or any mouse attached to it. What could be the problem?
It's really annoying when the screen turns on at night.
    Any help will be appreciated.

I have the same problem. I brought up console and there is nothing at the same time as the screen turning on. My situation is as follows:
I put on a podcast. The only applications running are firefox and iTunes. I turn the screen brightness all the way down with the F1 key, then mouse over the corner of the screen set to turn the monitor off.
After about 6 minutes, the screen comes back on at brightness level 1. If I touch a button or the trackpad the screen turns back off. It stays off for about 6 more minutes and does it again.
Edit: I just checked the logs with all showing and the only thing I see is a Wake Reason = EC LID0.
    Any tips?

  • My MacBook pro screen is broken (awaiting part for repair) can I transfer keynotes pres onto iPad air? Without a home screen to navigate?

I am eagerly awaiting the correct parts to repair my MacBook pro screen (my husband dropped it). I have an iPad air but for some reason iCloud has only stored a very old copy of a keynotes presentation I need? Anyway to transfer with being able to see MacBook screen to guide me?

You misunderstand the memory management scheme and misinterpret the display you're seeing.
To start with, free memory is wasted memory. Once some disk contents have been brought in, it is wasteful to discard that data just to make the RAM that it occupied "free." Inactive memory is memory that is not currently used, can be given to an application that needs it without doing any disk I/O (or used as a destination for reading disk content) but which currently holds disk data that might be useful in the future. I.e., it's file content of some sort.
To get a better idea of how Mac OS X manages RAM and how to interpret the Activity Monitory dispaly, see this tech note: Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor.
Rosetta is indeed memory hungry, but it's an interim solution. With 2 GB of RAM installed, you can run a lot of applications with alacrity.
Lastly, your Safari, an Intel-native application, is currently using 2 GB. This is a known issue with Safari, though it seems to me that it has gotten better since 2.0.3 was released in 10.4.6. Still, it's a bit of a memory hog, to be sure. Now that Firefox, Camino and Seamonkey are all available in Universal (Intel native) forms, you have alternatives. Firefox seems a lot more parsimonious when it comes to RAM.

  • Refurb macbook without an OS

My company sells its employees older, refurb macbooks without any OS.  .  Is it possible to obtain the OS from Apple? Is there a charge?
    Thanks!

Yes very possible and quit easy. If it is older than a late 2011 model you call Apple with the serial # of the system and order a set of Original System Discs, cost around $40 (but you have to call Apple and check that).
Or if it is a Late 2011 or newer all you have to do is use the Online Internet Recovery system, hold down the Command + Option/Alt + r keys at startup untiol you see a globe on the screen. From the screen that comes up you can use Disk Utility to erase or partition and format the drive, if that is needed, and then Reinstall Mac OS X.
All Late 2011 and newer models download OS X from the internet to reinstall. So have a fast internet connection that the computer can connect to either by WiFi or Ethernet cable. Better to use Ethernet.

I've been trying to get my iPhone screen to play onto my macbook.

There are no free ways to do it that I have seen. However, Reflector is reasonably priced. http://www.airsquirrels.com/reflector/

  • Macbook Pro screen and keyboard lights problems

Hi there, I have a macbook pro 15'' late 2011. Lately I realised that the screen does not dim when in a dark room and the keyboard lights do not work either. The keyboard keys work for dimming and lighting the screen, but it does not happen automatically. As for the keyboard lights, pressing the F5 and F6 buttons brings up the image of keyboard lights and they seem to be increasing and decreasing, but in fact nothing happens and the keyboard remains without any lights.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the 13” white and black plastic MacBooks without lighted keyboards that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Closing MacBook without closing programs?

Well this has been a quesion that is bugging me. Say I am on iChat and I am talking away and then my younger family comes along and they great me. I don't want them to see what I am doing on the computer, so I close it. But when I closed it I got signed off. Now some progrmas don't get affected, like Safari. But I recall that iTunes also completely quit.
Is there a way that you can completely close the MacBook without any programs quitting? Like I have Sleep disable because I keep it on at night once in a while in case someone talks to me, like a family member far away that I have been meaning to talk to. So sleep is disabled, or something like that because I turn the screen brigtness to 0 and then after like 5 minutes the little white light shows. And, that never causes me any closings or things.
So is there any possible way that I could close my MacBook without any programs quitting?

No. When the computer is put to sleep all processes are suspended. If you use a wireless connection for the internet the Airport is also suspended during sleep. It will reconnect when the computer wakes up.
In order for the computer to continue working with the lid closed you need to connect an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
There are one or two third-party utilities that are supposed to keep the computer awake with the lid closed. You'll find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. I've never used them so I have no idea if they work.

You did not ruin the phone, you will need a sim card to activate the phone and then connect the phone to itunes and do a restore from back up.

  • 13" macbook, My screen will go black if I tilt my screen back, but when I tilt it back forward it goes bright again.

I have an issue with my macbook's screen. When I open up my macbook, everything is fine until I tilt my screen back to a comfortable/useable position. If I tilt the screen more than 80 degrees from my keyboard then the whole screen goes dark. It isn't shutting off, but it instantly dim's the screen to the lowest setting (more or less pitch black). If I tilt the screen back towards the keyboard everything is okay again. I'm really just confused. This doesn't happen everytime I use my computer and sometimes I can get away wtih 90 degrees or so, but the problem seems to be getting worse. Not sure what to do and applecare has expired.

It may even be the screen, no way of knowing for sure until you eliminate one potential cause. At least the inverter is cheap.

The part costs ~$5 on eBay.

  • I have a macbook 13"screen purchased in 2007; I want to hook it up to my HDTV; I purchased a mini display port to hdmi adaptor but it does not fit.   what kind of adaptor will work for this model?

I have a Macbook, 13" screen, purchased in 2007.    I want to hook it up to my HDTV; I purchased a mini display port to hdmi adapter but it does not fit.   Any suggestions?

If you connect yourMacBook using a MiniDVI/HDMI adapter you will need to use external speakers for audio since the pre-2010 MacBooks will only send video through the MiniDVI or MiniDisplay Port . The MiniDVI/HDMI doesn't carry audio and there's no audio plugs on the TV to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
If your TV has a DVI input plug you can use a MiniDisplayPort/DVI adapter. Then a DVI cable to the DVI input plug on the TV. The TV will have RCA audio plugs for use with the DVI. Plus DVI gives a sharper image than HDMI.

  • MacBook Pro screen goes black when video is blown up on the second screen

I'm not sure if this is a problem but when I open up a video in fullscreen mode on my second display, the screen on my MacBook goes completely black and I cannot access anything on the my MacBook until I restore the video to windowed mode. Is there any way I can fix this?
Just to add, I can still see my cursor on the MacBook's screen, but there are no menus or docks on there, and I can see my notifications, but other than that, if I attempt to switch tasks and say open up Safari, the safari window on my MacBook will be black, while the video on the secondary monitor is in fullscreen mode.

Obviously there's a bad connection in there. Best bet is to take it back to the GB and show them how it happens.
