Erase old mail messages

I have all my mail accounts set up to erase deleted messages when one month old. Each one of my email accounts is a POP account that I have configured to remove the messages from the server after Mail downloads them. I also have each account configured to erase deleted messages when one month old, as indicated above. However, when I look at the messages in the trash folder, there are hundreds with a date much older than 30 days from today. Does anyone know why these would not have been erased?

You are correct: select box "'remove message from Server after retrieving message/When removed form Box". I found this in my old notes on Mail Preferences for older Macs, too. This is not working, however. Earthlink support suggested I remove cookies, rebuild mail boxes, set up a new account, etc., but I have not made any of these changes.

  • HT4137 Will doing this erase old text messages?  If so, is there any way to avoid losing them?

I just looked read iOS: How to back up your data and set up as a new device.  I've been having a few bugs, but do not want to lose my old text messages.  Will setting up as a new device and then syncing erase old text messages?  If so, is there any way to avoid losing them?

You will not lose text message, if you back up your phone correctly and then restore from that backup.  If your going to restore your phone as new and not from backup, then your text will not be there until you decide to restore from that backup.
If you don't want to lose the message, take a look in the app store to see if you can transfer to your computer.

  • Purging Old Mail Messages

I'm currently playing around with purging old mail messages after a certain time period. For test I've set inbox and sent at 7 days and trash at 1 day.
    I've read: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4428/6n6j4267s?a=view
Quite useful. I've set a global purge with the following:
    Rule1.regexp: 1
    Rule1.folderpattern: user/.*/trash
    Rule1.messagedays: 1
    Rule2:regexp: 1
    Rule2.folderpattern: user/.*/inbox
    Rule2.messagedays: 7
    Rule3.regexp: 1
    Rule3.folderpattern: user/.*/sent
    Rule3.messagedays: 7
    Rule4.regexp: 1
    Rule4.folderpattern: user/.*/Trash
    Rule4.messagedays: 1
    Rule5:regexp: 1
    Rule5.folderpattern: user/.*/Inbox
    Rule5.messagedays: 7
    Rule6.regexp: 1
    Rule6.folderpattern: user/.*/Sent
    Rule6.messagedays: 7
    Rule7.regexp: 1
    Rule7.folderpattern: user/.*/Deleted Items
    Rule7.messagedays: 1
It seems to purge the trash ok but no action on the inbox or sent yet. Any ideas?
    My version is: libimta.so 6.2-7.05 (built 12:18:44, Sep 5 2006)
    Thanks

I'd created about three weeks of a messages on this server prior to turning on the purge so they should be all legitimate messages and dates.
    I ran a /imexpire -n -d -v 3
a snippet of the output. Seems to have deleted messages from the Sent and Trash but for some reason Inbox is left untouched. Sent has the exact same messagedays of 7 too.

  • Archiving old mail messages

I am trying to archive old mail messages so they do not cram up my inbox. In the past I have successfully created a new mailbox for old messages, given it a month and year, and dragged messages across – but I can no longer do this.
When I try to drag a message across, I get the message 'Error: the message "xxx" could not be moved to the mailbox "xxx" - On My Mac". Can anyone help me out?
Not being able to archive old messages means that I have hundreds of already read messages in the inbox which causes, I think, another problem. Every time I open the mail program and click on an unread message, I am told that "The message has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it". When I quit the mail program and go back in, the problem sorts itself, but this happens every time I check the mail and it is becoming quite frustrating!
Happy New Year to you all!
    Regards, Mike
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Does the same occur when using the Move To or Copy To command instead of dragging messages manually?
Every time I open the mail program and click on an unread message,
I am told that "The message has not been downloaded from the server.
You need to take this account online in order to download it".
This indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox has approached or exceeded 1 GB in size (which is the recommended mailbox size limit for Jaguar and Panther Mail) or has some corruption.
An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size but is more likely to occur as a mailbox approaches or exceeds 1 GB in size for Jaguar or Panther Mail.
Although your OS detail provided indicates you are running 10.3.9, you posted in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger discussions so I'm assuming you are running 10.3.9 and not Tiger.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When relaunching Mail, a new INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder. This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any existing messages or new messages downloaded by the account while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
Post back here listing the package content file names and size of each.

  • How do I retrieve an erased voice mail message?

How do I retrieve an erased voice mail message?

If you accidentally erase a voice mail message, DO NOT HANG UP.  Continue to listen to the rest of your messages and save or erase as needed.  At the end of the messages, I hope you hear a voice prompt that says, "To check erased messages, dial 19."  I did this and the erased message played again and this time I saved it!  I do not know if this will work when you hang up and call back.  Hope this works for others.

  • How to import old mail messages

    Hi all
I have a new iMac. I have setup all my email accounts already. However I have about 2000 old email messages saved on two external hard drives ( through backups)
How can I import and seamlessly integrate the old mail messages into the new iMac ?
    Thanks

The normal method depends upon how you backed up your old mail. If you backed up the entire Mail folder and its content then use Mail's Import Mail option under the File menu. Select the Apple Mail option then click on the OK button. Navigate in the File Open dialog to the /Mail/Mailboxes/ folder. Select and click on the Open button. Check the mailboxes you wish to import then click on the Import button. Your mailboxes will appear in Mail's sidebar under the Imported Mail heading.

  • How to avoid mail from erasing old mails

im getting kind of frustrated w/mail erasing old emails i think they last about 3 - 4 weeks im not sure ... but is there a way to just keep everything and only erase them whenever i want to erase them?... thanx

Who is the provider of your email account, and is it IMAP or POP? If you are using an AOL IMAP account, for example, their policy is to remove messages from your Inbox folder after 27 days. More info, please, as Mail does not have any setting within it to remove messages from any Inbox.

  • After replacing computer, can't see old mail messages

My father's Mac died. I bought a new one for myself and gave my father my old computer. At the Apple store, they were able to copy his mail from his dead computer to my new one. I copied the mail folder to his Mail folder, but Mail does not recognize the old messages. It only sees the messages that were left on his mail server since his computer died. • Mail in inbox replaced by old mail messages when opened

My computer was recently worked on and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this but I thought it worth noting. I had to use time machine to put all my application data back onto apple mail and I started encountering problems pretty quickly. About 3-4 times a week when I go to look at my new mail in the morning, several of my mail messages are replaced by old messages from my inbox. They show up when I open my gmail account online but even when these messages are saved into folders they still retain the form of the old message. Has this happened to anyone before? Is there a solution? I might not have explained myself well, but hopefully someone will get the point.

You probably have two good ways to go -- one, you could merely remove the IMAP accounts, and set them up again, which since everything is on the server, Mail would again index them when setting newly accessing them.
The second, and probably better way to go, is as follows: Force a reindexing by deleting the Envelope Index. With IMAP or Exchange account, forcing reindexing requires removing the account folder. See:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/4.0/en/14019.html
This method with be sure to reindex any On My Mac mailboxes. Ask any questions needed to get comfortable with doing this.

  • Delete Old Mail Messages

I've just archived all my old email messages using MailSteward. I would now like to delete those same messages (prior to 12/31/2006) from the mail folders I have created. Is there any easy way to delete all messages older than a certain date from a Mail folder?

I just sort by date, select the most recent message I want to delete, then scroll to the oldest and shift-click it. Then delete. Alternately, you could probably create a smart mailbox to hold just the ones you want to delete, then select all and delete them from there. If this is something you do often, and the criteria by which you identify the messages are fixed, this would be worth the trouble of creating the smart mailbox. But it sounds like a one-time sort of thing, in which case the smart mailbox route is probably more trouble than it's worth.

  • I cannot erase e-mail messages I have read

We have a new iPad2.  My wife enjoys reading and sending e-mails using the Mail app.  However for some reason she cannot erase any of the messages she receives.  The error message is that the message cannot be placed in the Trash Basket.  What are we doing wrong?

    Try
    settings
    mail and contacts
    the e-mail account in question
    advanced
and then look to see what the settings for deleted messages is. When it is to be removed.
If all those settings are to allow you to delete from the iPad then there may be something with your e-mail provider and what they allow/dont' allow. I know my yahoo and my hotmail both act differently so there may be settings with the e-mail provider itself keeping you from deleting the messages

  • Old Mail Messages

I recently swapped my old hard drive for a larger one. After finding the folder where all my emails are kept, using Time Machine I brought them back to the new hard drive.
Problem is, they don't show up when I open Mail. In the folder it shows the messages are there but Mail can't seem to find them.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Thats great thanks!
Worked perfectly Very glad to know that as I'm getting a new MBP in a week or so.

  • Erase old error messages of MacPro RAID Card?

    Hi there.
I changed HDDs in my MacPro, they were configured as an RAID 1 using Apples RAID Card.
After mirroring the old System to the new (RAID 5) System, there are several error messages left in RAID Utility - where are they located to delete them?
Maybe I was wrong simply to change the HDDs, but is there a chance to solve that issue?
    Thanks in advance.

Get someone on ebay to buy your over priced under supported card.
Or accept the 2.2TB (some people only got the 800GB portion which needs to be set as free space).
    Or use 2TB drives.
Or external RAID but watch out for ATTO SAS and their Java program that doesn't work.
WD RED 3TB drives are designed for NAS RAID, firmware to support RAID TLER.
SoftRAID 4 makes a nice software RAID and does a good mirror with three drives in stripe reads (mirror only begins with minimum of two).
NO Apple just won't can't whatever offer a card and firmware. Odd with all their GUID support for large volumes isn't it.
It is designed for smaller SAS drives in today's world. And for RAID5 on 3TB and issues with battery... POS throw it up on ebay!

  • Transferring old Mail messages from external HD

    Hello
I am trying to find the emails I (think I) stored on my external HD.
Can anyone please tell me where on the external HD I would find the actual messages (i.e. NOT the application)? Also, what would they be called? Please be as explicit as you can as I'm not very clever.

Well, this should put your question back on the first page!
Frankly I am mystified too, and demystifying you may be beyond my abilities.
But here goes anyway. There really are only two possibilities:
    1. The clone you made, for unknown reasons, was not a perfect clone, and the emails never made it to the second drive.
    2. The emails are there, but the searches you have done have missed them.
If 1. there is nothing that can be done.
If 2. you could try booting from the external and running Mail right off that drive.
If this process finds the lost mail, you can save it all to your original boot drive, and restart from there.
