Erased dmg still in spotlight

A while back I had two disk images on my desktop which I used for secure storage of confidential documents. When I no longer needed them I deleted both.
Yesterday, while using spotlight, I discovered that both were still in existence but the path had changed from:
/Users/my name/Desktop/disk image name.dmg
to just
/Desktop/disk image name.dmg
Despite that, there were no desktop icons. In fact I was only able to find them in spotlight.
I found that I was able to open both disc images by clicking on the dmg icon in spotlight and then inputting the appropriate password (lucky that I remembered them).
They still contained the confidential documents that I thought I had destroyed.
Using Disk Utility I highlighted one of the disc images and hit the erase button. When that was finished I looked again in spotlight and it was still there. I clicked on the disk image in spotlight, input the password and found that the name of the desktop icon had changed from the original name (which still showed in Spotlight) to “Untitled,” but that it was now empty.
So I have apparently succeeded in deleting my confidential documents but cannot remove the disk images from Spotlight. Can anyone advise me how to do that?

Hi Mike,
Sounds like a few things.
I'd get EasyFind...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8707
Use that to find them and Trash them from.
Then you need Spotlight to reindex your drive, try Spotlight's Security tab to add that drive, wait, then remove that drive.

  • Can we erase .dmg files once the program has been installed?

Are the Disk Images and the .dmg files necessary to keep on your computer once you've installed the software? I mean does the program (any) have to access this 'placenta' in order to do it's job/ get more information? Is it continually exchanging data with the 'stuff' in here/or repairing itself? Or can we erase them?

For the reasons you outline, you can erase them.
    Possible reasons for keeping them:
Sometimes software disappears from vendor sites. New versions replace old, but you may still want to use the old. It may be a resource should you need to reinstall.
An installer may also include an uninstaller utility.

  • Trying to sync ipod - all songs erased but still showing in itunes

I've had my ipod for two years, no problem, just went to sync and everything on ipod was erased, but everything still appears in itunes. Getting the following error message: Songs on the ipod cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist. But they do exist...any ideas?

Hi, Thanks for replying. I created a smart playlist but when I went to change the ipod settings in itunes, "ipod options" did not come up in the menu. All I have is open, eject, sync, transfer purchases and reset warnings. Any ideas?

  • Completely erased iPod, still 3.3 GB of other!

I have a 4th gen, 8 GB iPod Touch, it's about two years old.
Over half my memory was being used by Other, so after trying all these different suggestions and failing, I restored it to factory settings. Everything has been erased and it still has 3.3 GB of Other. How do I fix this???

Have you restored it from backup or as a new device. Try restore as new.
Try another computer, also make sure you have the newest iTunes version.

It is, for whatever reasons, the way Apple has decided the iPhone is supposed to work. Therefore, there is nothing to "fix".

  • Erasing everything still doesn't free up my memory...

    Hey folks,
My problem with my Palm Pre (webOS 1.4.1) is that i can't put music on it anymore. I came to a limit and 'removed' some files with no change, so then i went into USB Drive and removed all songs from my phone but my device info still says i have 0GB free and that i am using 8GB, how is that at all possible? I only have 4 extra apps on my phone, and they have been there for some time.
    Any help?

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
I would first try restarting the device to see if the free space will recalculate. Hold down your power button and move the ringer switch back and forth 3 times, then let go of the power button. Within 3-5 seconds, the device will restart.
Let us know if that solves the issue.

  • Spotlight and mail searches not working, but...

I contacted Apple Support by phone and they had me go through all of the procedures to re-index the meta data and so on on my iMac and still my Spotlight and Mail searches are not working properly. (I cannot find certain files even though I know they exist...more often than not!) Supposedly, when I "forced" a re-index operation by going to Spotlight Preferences and changing Privacy settings for the entire hard disk and then changing them back, the Spotlight icon on the top right of the menubar was supposed to indicate that re-indexing was taking place, but that never happened. It seems that I possibly have a corrupt metadata file which just won't re-index, or some kind of permission changed which doesn't allow re-indexing to happen, or SOMETHING like that.
Is there a singular hidden "index" or metadata file on the Mac under Lion where this information is stored, can I get at it so I can trash it, and if I do, will the computer automatically rebuild a new index file (if such a singular file even exists)?
I asked this question at a semi-local Apple Store Genius Bar as well, and they were scratching their heads. I have not yet brought the machine in to the store --- if I can avoid that lengthy step, I'd much prefer to fix this here in my office. (The machine works fine otherwise, and I need it here all the time, it's just that searching doesn't work)
I have also tried a re-install over the existing OS (leaving all my apps and documents in place), but have not tried a complete erase-and-install installation. I have a complete Time Machine backup of the entire drive, but the question remains...if I use Apple Migration Assistant to bring the apps and documents back in from Time Machine after doing a "clean" install on a wiped-clean hard drive, won't Time Machine also restore the old metadata that I suspect is corrupt? If so, how would I go about restoring all of my apps and documents without the use of the Migration Assistant or the Time Machine backup file (which may contain a corrupt index file)? If I do a hard drive clone with one of the available utilities dedicated to that purpose, how do I restore JUST the things I need (including serial numbers, etc) without risk of bringing over "bad" index files?
By the way, this machine was running Snow Leopard for well over a year before I upgraded to Lion, with no searching problems whatsoever.
Thanks for any help that anyone might be able to provide. I know I ask a lot of questions, but I don't want to go through the lengthy cloning of my hard drive and then doing a "clean" install and then be saddled with the same problem again.

  • Lost my iphone and erased through Icloud. now i have found it

I have erased the backups from Itunes. Found my iphone, but have not powered it up yet because the erase is still pending on Icloud. How can I delete the erase that I have set so that I do not lose all my stuff on my phone.

You could turn off your wifi and pull the SIM card from the phone, then turn on the phone and put it in airplane mode as quickly as you can to prevent it from connecting to the internet and receiving the erase command.  Then back it up in iTunes by connecting it to your computer, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Back Up and File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Then put the SIM back in, turn on your wifi, turn off airplane mode and allow it to erase.  When it's done, restore the iTunes backup by going to File>Devices>Restore from Backup.  You shouldn't lose a thing.

  • Erase memory stick after import

I have a sony DSC-P10 camera and have noticed that if I check the box to erase files from the memory stick after import, the pictures are erases but still seem to be taking up space on the stick. I had to reformat the memory stick to get the space back.
Is there something I can tweak in iPhoto? If I have to erase the memory stick manually it is no big deal, I just wondered if I am missing a trick here?
    Mike

    Mike,
I don't know anything about your memory stick, but I can ell you from personal experience and from other's experiences here to NOT have iPhoto or even Image Capture to erase your memory stick.
Thins can go wrong in the download process and there is a chance you can lose the images on the computer and on the card if you have it automatically erased.

  • Batch Renaming loses Spotlight Comments, Os X to blame?

I posted this over at the Adobe forum for Bridge, however, I'm going to post it here too because part of me feels like this issue I'm experiencing is tied to a recent Os update: from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
I'm a photo editor for a wedding photographer and have been implementing some of my own personal workflows into his pipeline. I tend NOT to rename camera-generated files, at all, unless there's an important reason to do so. Sorting an entire wedding by "Date" works perfectly for building the proper timeline for a shoot. So camera-generated file names are perfectly okay for our needs.
When an edit is complete I'll generate JPEGs from Aperture. The resulting files will continue to carry the original RAW files names, unless there is a duplicate file name, then Aperture will add a number: "(1)" to the file, if necessary. Typically, after export, I run an Automator action that stores the file name in the Spotlight Comments. Because prior to shipping and archiving, I AM going to rename the final JPEGs sequentially: 0001_wedding, 0002_wedding, etc.
The beauty was that with the original name stored in the Spotlight comments for the JPEG, I would easily look at 0148_wedding.jpg, see that it's spotlight comments said, "Original Name: IMG_3471" and obviously know exactly what RAW image this new JPEG started as. Worked perfectly.
So process was: Export, Store Original Name in Spotlight Comments of JPEGs, Batch Rename (sequentially) based on date modified in Bridge CS4.
Well now everthing's changed. We had a system drive go down. We were running 10.5.8. When the system came back from the shop, with a new drive installed, it was/is running Snow Leopard. 10.6.3? I think. Snow Leopard, no doubt.
And now my prior workflow has been wrecked because the act of renaming, in Bridge CS4, erases all those handy Spotlight comments. However, part of me is wondering though if this issue is rooted more deeply, at the OS level? Because R-Name (Batch renaming utility) is now eradicating Spotlight comments as is an Automator action built for the same purposes. This all used to work perfectly. And the one major change that has occurred was this "upgrade" from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
So, question is: is there something I can alter in Bridge Preferences to maintain my Spotlight Comments, when batch renaming? Is this all tied to the Snow Leopard? Is there ANY renaming utility that's not going to fall victim to whatever the hang up here is?? How can I batch rename and not destroy my lovely Spotlight Comments in the process?
    Thanks for your time!!

Yes, this works. However, this was already part of my workflow.... and not where the trouble lies.
After exporting jpeg images from Aperture, they carry the same name of the original RAW files, from which they came. (So, IMG_8342.jpg would have started it's life as IMG_8342.CR2.) But we dont' send them out like that. We sequentially name them 0001_image.jpg, 0002_image.jpg, etc... So after renaming, how do you find the original file again, right?
BEFORE the renaming phase, I would run the "Store Original Names in Spotlight Comments" action. That way, I could look at the comments for a derivative .jpg—whose name has now changed—and determine the name of the ORIGINAL file.
After renaming, the derivative file might end up being named 0361_image.jpg, but it's Spotlight comments would say, for example, Original Name:<<IMG_8485.jpg>>. Then I would know that this particular file started off as IMG_8485.CR2.
As such, I could quickly/easily backtrack, knowing that the original RAW file was named IMG_8485.CR2
The issue is that once you've gone thru the effort to ADD these spotlight comments, if you THEN go through a re-naming step, this erases all those Spotlight Comments. That was my problem... Getting the Spotlight Comments in place was never the issue. KEEPING them there was the problem.

  • Problem with Eraser tool in PSE7

I have the PSE7 (using in Windows Vista) and have been using it for scrapbooking since early May09.  I've had no real problems with it up until yesterday when my eraser tool stopped working.  The magic eraser will still work, but the regular eraser will no longer erase.   I've tried going out of the program and coming back in with no difference.  I've tried rebooting the computer hoping it would reset but no difference.  Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?  I would greatly appreciate any help as I "can't live without my eraser tool"!  ;0)
    teri

If you have a tablet, the mouse and pen can not both be on (or touching) the tablet at the same time.
If you don't have a tablet or the above isn't causing the issue, the next thing to do is reset the eraser tool. With the eraser selected, click the eraser icon in the options bar...not the tool box...and select "reset tool" from the context menu.
Item "A" in the diagram of the options bar in this help index page is the tool icon which houses the reset tool(s) context menu.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PhotoshopElements/7.0_Win/WSae2ea3b149d0c3591ae939f103860b3d59 -7e27.html
If the above does not fix the problem, the next step is to reset the application preference files.
To reset all of your Photoshop preferences, hold down the
Control+Alt+Shift (Windows), Command+Option+Shift (Mac) keys as you launch the application.
EDIT: You have to press those three keys immediately after you launch the editor portion of the application to get the delete user settings dialog to come up. If you don't get a dialog, you did not press those three keys fast enough.

  • TC 3TB shows 434MB of used drive space even after full erase

    Hello! Purchased a pre-owned TC 3TB MD033.
Device shows 2.7TB drive capacity and 2,7TB available. (And that is normal as the TC shows binary size, not decimal).
BUT! In the same time it reports that 434GB are USED! See the picture.
Is it normal for a pre-owend TC?
(I've heard it's normal because TC backup files are encrypted and behave not like ordinary files.)

Just use erase in the airport utility.. even if it was erased before do it again.. It can use some space .. 180MB. If I remember but certainly not 434GB.. the previous owner has left a backup or files on it..
If you do an erase and still have 434GB used something is wrong.. report back..
    Your picture is not showing.
