Erased Drive; How to Install?

I've just purchased a new iMac, and am sending this 1st gen iMac G5 to our daughter.
I erased the drive in preparation for shipment, and just now realized that she may have problems installing OS X Leopard on it. The iMac has a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Will she be able to install Leopard with these, or will she need to connect a wired keyboard/mouse for the installation?
(BTW, after I'd erased the drive, I had to eject the Leopard DVD via firmware, as the eject button on the keyboard didn't do anything).
Will she run into problems, or should I recommend that she carry it in to her Apple Store?
Thanks!

Wow!!! Talk about a quick reply!!!!
Thanks for the advice. It's already been shipped, so testing it isn't an option at this point (my bad!).
She's pretty excited about getting it, as she's been "limping" along on an old, processor-upgraded G4 for quite a while now. (I'd installed Leopard, and the processor upgrade made it VERY unstable. Unfortunately, it's a 3rd-hand computer, and the original owner can't remember where she got the processor upgrade. It's now running Tiger, and a lot of the iLife functions no longer work).
This computer, on its way to her, should be able to run just about everything except iMovie 08.
Thanks again!

Right-click on each of the devices that reference Option (com ports and so on). Select Update driver software and browse to the folder with the unzipped .inf files.
You probably tried this but I thought I'd post anyway for others who are looking for the topic.

  • I erased my main drive: how to install Mavericks?

I was running Yosemite Beta on my iMac, but it was acting funny. A dialog told me to back it up and erase and reinstall. I copied the internal drive to a FireWire drive as a clone. Then I booted from the firewire drive. Then I did something very stupid. I erased my main drive, my internal Macintosh HD. I thought I would be able to reinstall the Yosemite beta on my main drive after I booted But now I can't boot up all the way from either of my FireWire drives, which have the proper software on them; they were cloned from the original drive, and worked until I erased the main drive. The boot up process stops about a minute into the process. So how do I get a copy of at least Lion or Mountain Lion or Mavericks on to the main drive? I'm stuck. I don't know how to do that.

Oh, they're clones. Made them with SuperDuper. They boot, but they stopped after I erased the Macintosh HD.
I've found a way to make them boot again, however. I tried safe boot, single user, netboot -- no deal. I found a cd copy I made of Lion, way back, and tried to see if it would mount -- of course it didn't -- but I just tried one more time, went to make coffee, and returned to my first computer screen in two days. It's still kind of working. I wonder if the ROM in my 24", 2.66 Ghz, iMac 9,1, just can't accept a bare drive on the internal bus. Or, it seems that there is something wrong with the drive. I get this message in the Crash log every minute or so.
Oct 15 15:11:35 James-Hassingers-iMac-3.local coreduetd[45]: CoreData: error: (11) Fatal error.  The database at /var/db/CoreDuet/coreduetd.db is corrupted.  SQLite error code:11, 'database disk image is malformed'

Doesn't sound very good. I'm wondering if I've just gotten a lot of bad sectors. But I'd love to just do an iFixit on it, put in a new 1 TB drive -- I'm not bad with these projects -- and then go from there.

  • Selling MBPR, erased drive and cannot install OSX

Ok, so I am selling my early 2013 MBPR so have backed it up, erased the hard drive, but now cannot even reinstall OSX on it.
The MBPR came with Mountain Lion, but I have upgraded to Mavericks. I think this is what was causing the issue maybe?
I get an error message on a grey screen saying: Apple.com/support -3001F (see image)
How can I reinstall this software? I am now having to load from an old backup which is a pain in the ***, just so I can reinstall OSX.
    I followed these instructions:
Re: Wipe/Factory reset of my MacBook Pro Retina that I just sold?
        Sep 20, 2013 4:49 PM    (in response to rmreid09)
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove a Windows partition, if there be one.
              6. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
         C. See What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. You must remove the computer from your list of registered hardware. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In this case you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License. See Terms and Conditions if you need to transfer an Extended Warranty that is still in effect (Transfer of Plan.)

    Thanks LowLuster.
So after restarting while pushing Command + Option/alt + r, I get the globe on the screen for Internet Recovery.
Next step is to erase the hard drive (Macintosh HD)
    Then reinstall OSX?
I'll give this a go, but I can't see the option for 'Disk Utility to Repartition the drive as One Partition to Remove the Mavericks Built In Recovery HD partition from the internal drive' - all there is is the usual disc utility to erase it?
EDIT: It's now letting me reinstall Mountain Lion after erasing the hard drive, excellent

  • Replacing Hard Drive - How to install windows 8.1

    Hi,
I have an HP Envy dv6 with a 1TB hard drive. The thing is that i'm thinking of buying a 256 SSD to configure as primary disk and the current HDD as second. My question is: when installing the SSD, how can I install windows 8.1 and use my original windows key?
I've searched in the battery and on the back of my laptop and I couldn't find the serial number. Some people says that is its embeded in the motherboard and when windows is installed it automatically recognize the serial. But my main concern is how can I get a Windows 8.1 version to install. Should I download an .iso from any internet site? how can I know that that version is compatible with my serial number?
    Thanks a lot

Hi Jackcabad. Thanks for the answer. I think this solves most of my concerns but I still can't figure out where is my w8 serial number stored and how can i know it. Can you provide information on that?
    Thanks!

  • Macbook bad DVD drive how to install windows in bootcamp

My macbook has a bad DVD drive. I just upgraded it to snow leopard and want to install windows using bootcamp. Unfortunately when the windows installation starts the machine reboots but does not seem to be able to detect the windows disc in an external dvd that I have attached to it. I tried two different usb dvd readers and finally a firewire one I had laying around to no avail.
without the DVD drive working, how can I get it to install Windows?
thanks very much in advance for any help

    Welcome to Apple discussions.
This particular forum is for student software developers so you might not get an answer to your question. I suggest you post it again, but this time to one of the Boot Camp forums. Maybe someone there will have the answer you want.
    Best wishes and good luck

  • Macbook retina has no CD drive - how to install Windows??

I have the new Macbook 15" retina and I'm trying to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp, but I just realized there is no CD/DVD drive on this model to insert the Windows disc. How to I install Windows and the drivers???

I am not 100% sure, but the retina mbp is the only new MBP that allows booting fron an external DvD drive.
If it will not boot directly, use another computer to make an ISO file (on USB) from the Windows CD and use that one to install Windows. The OS10.7 and 10.8 Bootcamp can not handle XP only 7 and 8.

  • Replacing The Hard Drive, How To Install The OS Again?

Hi all again! Sorry for posting so many questions.
I have a macbook pro late 2011 model. I want to replace the hard drive with an SSD drive but I am not too familiar with Mac products. My question is... do I just take out the old hard drive and put the new one in? Is there a CD with the Max OS on it that I could then use to install the OS onto the new drive?
    Thanks!

There are a large number of DIY's, HowTo's and the like on the subject, may want to search a bit.
If you re comfortable to the layout and content  of the current internal drive, the quick & dirty would be:
Get an external enclosure for the new drive.
Connect/power up, then use Disk Utility to prep the drive for Mac use: GUID partition scheme & Apple Extended (Journaled).
Use Disk Utility or CarbonCopyCloner to clone the internal volume onto the external.
Test to ensure all is well.
    Swap drives when ok.

  • Is there a way to recover iPhoto library after erasing drive and clean install of Mavericks?

Is there a way to recover the photos in my iphoto library after erasing my SSD drive and reinstalling mavericks? My time capsule backed everything up except iphoto, and I had 3 years worth of important photots in there. Is there any way to recover them?

In addition to using a Time Capsule drive and using Time Machine, with this painful lesson learned, in the near future, purchase another high quality, high speed (USB 3.0, Thundetbolt OR FireWIre 800 depending what connections are on your Mac) external hard drive, formatted for Mac, and use a data cloning app such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make bootable clones/copies of your Mac's entire internal hard drive.
Bootable clones and data cloning apps are the best and most reliable way of creating reliable backups of your important data in the future.
Also, my other advise stands, too! If you have data the is like "gold" to you copy this data manually to other media such as CDs/DVDs and/or high capacity USB flash drives.
Sorry you have lost your precious photos.
Painful lesson, but good info to prevent this all from happening, again.
WIth computers, having many copies and redundancies of data is key to never losing important computer data.
    Again, sorry.

  • No internet, i have driver. how to install wireless driver?

I have had Arch installed on one of my three HDs for a while. I have just switched over to wireless. I bought the Asus PCE-N13 pci card. It works great on my other distro i have installed on my other HD - ubuntu (which is where I type this from).
I have the driver disk the card came with (yes, it actually supports linux). The driver is rt2860.
When I boot into my Arch HD, I am just lost as to what to do to install the driver to get my wireless working for Arch.
    I'll take any tips.
    Thanks,
    Randy
Also, I have tried to use the Arch Wiki, but that is difficult for me personally to follow.

I can't help you with installing the driver that did come with the card.
However I notice that there is a rt2860 driver on the AUR. You could try to install it and see if it works.
To install from the AUR you need yaourt (or equivalent). If you don't have it, add following lines to the
    end of /etc/pacman.conf:
    [archlinuxfr]
    Server = http://repo.archlinux.fr/i686
Then execute on the command line: pacman -S yaourt
And after that: yaourt -S rt2860
    Just my 2 cents.

  • Simpletech 160g external drive how to install, i have it plugged in but it does not show up in disc utilities?

I have a Simpletech 160 g, USB hard drive, I plug it in and the instructions say it will need to be formated and to go to disc utilities. It isn't there. Tried rebooting? Please help? New iMac for Christmas

If you are going to use the EHD as a storage drive for files or backups then Thunderbolt will provide the fastest performance possible. However you need a mid 2011 iMac to use it as these are the first iMac's to have Thunderbolt! I don't believe you have that new an iMac! The EHD's I normally suggest are:
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
All are similar in features and build quality. They all have Firewire & Firewire 800 connections which for pre-2011 iMac's is the quickest bus there is for EHD's. You need to check the specs on your iMac to see what connections it has. If you don't even have FW800 then while these EHD's would work fine they may be slight overkill however they will prepare you when you upgrade to a newer Mac.
Personally I own 4 of the LaCie's however any would be welcome on my desk. I have 3 daisy chained together via FW800 on one machine and the 4th is a TM backup for my MBA.
