Erased Hard Drive and operating system accidentally via disk utility? Here's what to do

I thought I had messed up majorly today when I attempted to erase and re-install an operating system on my friends macbook pro. I used another computer and targeted his computer so his hard drive would show up on my desktop. I then used disk utility and completely erased his hard drive. "Ooops" i thought after trying to then install Lion from my computer's applications folder. Wouldn't work. All his computer would show was a folder with a ? mark!!!
I searched for a solution as to what to do in this situation and got a lot of conflicting complex suggestions. The one that made the most sense was to create a bootable external disk to reinstall the system. This didn't work for me, I was probably doing it wrong.
HERE'S WHAT DID WORK FOR ME:
(what you need)
1) decent wireless internet connection (know the network and password)
2) blank computer hard drive (no OS, no nothing)
3) power cable
thats it
Step 1.
Restart your computer and hold down "Command" and the "R" keys at the same time. do this for about 30 seconds or so and release
Step 2.
Your computer should, after a few seconds or so, show a spinning globe. Your computer will then start searching for an internet connection. Choose a network from the drop down menu and type in the password to the network.
Step 3.
Your computer will then connect with Apple.com's software site (I think this is called OSX Recovery or something [thus the holding down of the "R" for recovery key]) and find your computer's original operating system (not sure how far back this works, but it worked perfectly with Lion)
Step 4.
Download the OS
Step 5.
Upon download completion your computer may shut down. Just turn it back on and when its back up and running it will immediately start to install the OS it just downloaded.
Step 6.
Wait for this to complete and bam, you're back to having an operating system on your computer.
I hope this works for anyone with my problem.
Good luck!

You will need to do the following:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

Yes the original Install Discs can be replaced for a nominal fee. Call AppleCare, you will need a credit card and the serial number of the machine. You can use the AppleCare Contact Info for the phone number on your part of the planet.

I have had my iMac for 55 days now and twice I had to power off/on and then It does not power up correctly.  I verified my disk and found errors that could not be repaired (errors were associated with boot drive)  I erased the drive and restored system back to the previous day.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it. Allen's already recommended an Apple repair station visit. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for an onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located).  BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

It's not a feature of iTunes but can be done using various work-arounds.
Small hard drive? Split your iTunes library across multiple volumes - http://www.macyourself.com/2009/04/24/small-hard-drive-split-your-itunes-library -across-multiple-volumes/  - copying media folders to external, then deleting from internal, then adding again.

Oh ok, well that was what the test said prior to reformatting the hard drive. Now, it doesn't find any trouble no matter how many times I run it. That's what has me so confused, everything seems to check out and yet...I can't do anything, not even install the software!

  • What's the difference between choosing "reinstall mountain Lion" and erasing hard drive and booting from base system?

  • Erase hard drive and restore files

After installing the last software update for Safari, Safari would often crash when I tried to open a link. I thought reloading Mountain would correct the bad download. After doing that, Safafi will not open at all. All other apps are ok and I can get online with Google,Firefox, etc. My Imac exel is out of warranty so Apple support is limited. They recommended that I save my data, erase my hard drive and then restore everything. I need those procedures. I am going to purchase an ext hard drive. Do I save the system folder and files on it? When I restore my files, how do I prevent re-introducing the problem that caused it? Can I just reload Mountain from my App act or will this require more system reload? This senior citizen needs help. Thanks

Today I spoke with a local Apple dealer. He provided the info I think I need to save, erase, reload, and restore. If I have problems, I will return to this discussion. Thank You

  • Want to erase hard drive and reinstall Tiger- quick questions

I am giving my G4 to my son in a couple of days and it now has Classic on it. My plan is to erase the whole hard drive and install just Tiger. So my thoughts are:
1.) There are no settings I want/need to preserve. I have 4 Tiger CD's- is that the right number? I think I have them all but just want to make sure.
2.) Do I insert CD holding down the C key and from some point when the CD loads, I chose Disk Utility and wipe the hard drive then? Are there different choices for wiping the hard drive? Like the number of passes?
3.) And then is it just a simple matter of installing all 4 Tiger disks?
Any other tips, tricks, advice you can give me? Tomorrow's the big day (2/1)! Thanks so much, I am a bit nervous about this......... Judy

  • Help!  Erased Hard Drive and can't get my library from my iPod to my HD

HELP! I recently had to erase my hard drive and start fresh. I have Mac OS X 10.3.9 cleanly installed. I now have the problem that I can't get my music library from my iPod to iTunes. Many, many hours went into transferring my CD collection into iTunes. I can't fathom going through all of that again! Any suggestions would be appreciated!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You can download the songs from your iPod back to your HD with several freeware programs, try out Senuti:
    http://wbyoung.ambitiouslemon.com/senuti/
I had the same problem and after installing my OS new i was able to copy back all the songs from my iPod to iTunes. Wasn't able though to keep the playlists, but maybe you find a way how to copy the songs including playlists.
    Hope that helped,
    Oliver

  • Erasing hard drive and reinstalling

Hi folks! Can anybody tell me how to erase the hard drive and reinstall OSX?

If you are selling it, then you will want to ensure
that all of your personal information is removed.
So... boot from the OS X disc and select Disk Utility
from the Apple menu. Select to reformat the drive and
under the options select to write zeroes. This will
overwrite all the data on your drive.
The usual erase does not overwrite your files.
Don't forget, if you have purchased any tunes from iTMS, deauthorise your computer, or you will lose one of you'r 5

  • Erasing hard drive and reinstalling OS

My mid 2011 iMac (OSX Yosemite 10.10.2) has been getting very sluggish despite ensuring sufficient spare space (currently 200Gb) and running the basic Disk Utility verify/repair routines. So having done a full data back-up I am now trying to erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS. Following the recommended steps in the Disk Utility I get as far as the erase disk stage but then an error message pops up saying "couldn't unmount disk". Has anyone encountered this before or have any suggestions please?

    Hello kayjayaitch,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. If you continue to get this unmount notification, you may find the information regarding related unmount issues in the following article helpful:
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support
Also, if your iMac originally shipped with an Install disk, you may want to try using the Disk Utility on that Install disk, erase the hard drive from there, then try restoring from Internet Recovery as detailed here:
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
    Sincerely,

  • After erasing hard drive and re-installing Lion, is there anyway i can tell if all my files are gone?

    Hey guys.
Basically i have sold my iMac after buying a new Macbook Pro. I erased hard drive in disc utility then reinstalled Lion from disc.
When i turn on the iMac now it does the usual welcome video, then proceeds to try and set up the machine. Which i dont want to do as i have sold it and he will want to do that himself.
Dont personally know the guy ive sold it too so basically i want to know how i can check to see if my files have actually been deleted?
Just so all my personal information isnt accessed by someone else.
    Thanks a lot

If you erased the disk, the data is gone. If you want to be sure, you can open Disk Utiility again and erase the disk using a special method (select the hard disk > Erase > Security Options) before installing Mac OS X
