Eraser tool doesn't Erase

In my practice session using the Eraser tool I can't make it work.  From Help, "To erase any object on the artboard, leave all objects unselected".
That works -- until I stop the mouse drag and let go of the button.  Then the paths and fill bounce back from invisibility instantly.
GM, using Win 7 and AI cs5.

Here, I'll try to upload a local file.  Last time, the uploader didn't work and I had to post it first to Photobucket.
Line 1 is a piece of freehand text "ERASE" created with a caligraphic brush, 5 pts stroke.
Line 2 is the result of dragging the Eraser tool, 200 dia., across, from right to left. The top of the round eraser passed over the lower 2/3 of the word. As it passed over, that portion of the text completely disappeared.  When done, however, it all came back except for small gaps or breaks that you can see.
Line 3 is the result of selection of the lower half. It reveals that the paths have indeed been affected -- but not erased.

  • Eraser tool doesn't work for black layer mask

I am trying to set a black layer mask and use the eraser tool to edit it.  Unfortunately the eraser tool is not responsive.  I'm not knowingly doing anything differently than I've done in the past.  I recently did a round of software updates for CS6.  Wondering if anyone else is experienceing this and if there's a solution?

Check that foreground color in the toolbox is set to black. (opposite from when using the brush tool)
Press D and then the X key.
And that opacity and flow are 100%.
Most people use the brush tool on layer masks and you might find that works better.

  • Eraser tool doesn't function

I can not use the eraser tool (crossed out pencil) on any document I've created. It use to work but now NOTHING! ANY SUGGESTIONS?

    James,
When things stop working it may be worth trying the list, and hope for one of the easy ones at the top.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/preference-file-location-illustrator.html
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Eraser tool on wacom eraser

    Hi there,
IN SHORT: Please make the active tool change to the eraser when I use the eraser of my wacom pen.
WHY? I love using the eraser end of the pen, it's very intuitive. However, frequently I'll be erasing something and think "heck, I need to change the size of my brush". I go to change the brush size, but - hang on, the paintbrush is still selected. I must first select the eraser tool.
THEN of course, I have to change the tool back to the paintbrush tool. Why? Because if I don't, when the time comes to flip back round to the normal nib-end of the pen, the eraser tool will still be selected!
If this has got to happen, then why do i need to waste my time flipping the pen round too?
SECONDLY WHY: I cannot think of a single reason why it would be useful to keep the 'nib's current tool showing as active when it isn't going to be used until the nib (or i guess the mouse) takes control.
It's driving me mad. It'd be such a useful feature (it works tremendously well in the Gimp) but it's just so hindered by this behaviour that it's just not worth using at the moment.

    I don’t follow.
If you try to hide the background just paint on the new Layer, if you want to actually erase parts of the Background Layer convert it to a regular Layer (Layer > New > Layer from Background or just double-click it).

  • How to ERASE a rasterized image? Erasing tool doesn't work

Hi there. I have one problem. I don't know why I can't deleting/erasing my imported image. When I select that tool it can't do anything. I show this on film below. What is it? Can you help me? How to erase images?

I agree with the previous 2 posters that Photoshop has the best controls for editing bitmapped images.
If you wanted something crude and fast in illustratror
draw using the blob brush a shape to use to erase your imaeg
    Select image and your shape
In transparency palette click on make mask,  Since I used black ink I had to take unchecked clip.

  • What happened to my eraser tool? PS CS4

Suddenly the eraser tool doesn't work any more on settings layers. If I want to erase partly a curves layer, nothing happens. If I want to erase a part selection setting layer, the eraser adds instead of erasing. Otherwise it works normally on pixels layers. I restarted the computer but nothing changed. The erase history box is unchecked.
Did I activate some function that I am not aware of? Or is this a bug and should I reinstall?

    >Are you erasing to black, white, transparent?  Depending on what you are erasing it is easy to flip the colours accidentally and it will look like eraser is not working...
That was it! I was erasing to white. Strange that I had never come by this before in 12 years of Photoshop use!
    >When I paint on Layer Masks I usually just reset back- and foreground-color (D) if necessary, use the Brush Tool and switch the two colors (X) as needed.
I will try that technique, it should help fine tuning. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for getting me out of this!

  • Eraser tool on a straight horizontal line

If I use the eraser tool to remove parts of a straight horizontal line, the resulting lines are not 180°. Am I doing something wrong?

Unfortunately the eraser tool doesn't go well with open paths and strokes. It works with closed paths and fills.
It's the wrong tool for this job.

  • Basic eraser tool no longer produces transparency

Photoshop CS6: In the past, basic eraser tool produced transparent areas when run over the background layer. Now it producers background color. Magic eraser tool and background eraser tool work as they should, that is they produce transparency wherever I select. How do I get the basic eraser tool to behave?

    Photoshop CS6 for PC
Thanks for your replies. Resetting tools did not work. This is what happens when the three eraser tools are applied to background layer of a grayscale, .tif image with no other layers created.
Select basic eraser tool and apply to background layer background color (white in this case)  is applied to background layer wherever basic erase tool is applied to image as if it were the brush tool.
Select background eraser tool and apply to background layer. Transparency appears wherever background erase tool is applied to image.
Go back and reselect basic erase tool. Now, transparency appears wherever basic eraser tool is applied.
The same thing happens when the magic erase tool is selected, that is if I select it, use it and then go back and reselect the basisc erase tool, transparency results wherever basic erase tool is applied to image.
In the past, basic erase tool has worked with background layers.
    Complicated circumstances. Any other thoughts?

  • Eraser tool (FW CS4) doesn't affect entire pixel width -- only one point?

I'm using the Fireworks CS4 eraser tool (this may pertain to other tools), set to: square shape, 1px width, edge softness 0 or 100 (doesn't matter). This is noticeable when moving the brush diagonally from bottom-right to top-left. When moving in the opposite direction, it isn't noticeable at all. It seems to be only affecting the upper-left point on every pixel (pixels have points in Fireworks?).
    ...What the hell? (rhetorical)
I make pixel art, so this is really awkward.
Is there some setting I'm missing?
    Is this normal behavior?
    How does it make sense?

Talking about pixels, it happens that sometimes rectangles cannot be perfectly aligned, even when they are positioned and aligned correctly and have a less than a pixel difference... . That affects css and images and causes some miscalculations.

  • In Photoshop CS5, my eraser tool fades an image but doesn't erase pixels entirely, even when the hardness is at 100%

I don't know when exactly this started, but I can't figure out how to get the eraser tool to just work as an eraser again

    It happens in every poject

  • My eraser tool acts weirdly. Everytime i use eraser tip on my pen, I cannot change the size of it with either tablet wheel or brackets. It changes the size of a brush tool instead. This was not happening in CS6.. Any ideas?

So this problem is annoying me. Is there any setting that has been added and this got messed up or is it a bug? In CS6 I could turn around my pen and use the eraser tip and change the size of it.
Now in CC 2014 I can't do it. I have to manually click the Eraser tool, and then change the size. I must say this is annoying as hell.

Reset the tool? What do you mean?
EDIT: Never mind, i found out how to reset. I Ctrl+Right clicked and reseted both brush and eraser but it still doesn't fix the issue. I also downloaded PS CS6 version and it works fine there.. So I don't know what it is. Must be a bug in CC 2014..

  • Eraser tool in Elements 8 not working

I just downloaded Elements 8 a few weeks ago. When I try to use the eraser tool, nothing happens. I reset the tool and still nothing. It seems that it doing something because when I go to the Edit menu, I am able to undo the eraser. But I can't see that anything has happened on my image. Please help. Thanks so much!

Try resetting the application preference files. Sometimes, the tool reset alone doesn't do the trick.
If on Windows, press and hold in the ctrl + shift + alt keys as you launch the editor. Do not release these three keys...ctrl + shift + alt. A dialog box will come up saying something like "Delete Photoshop Elements settings file?". After this dialog comes up, you can release those three keys. Click "OK" to accept. Application settings will be set to factory default and eraser tool should work as expected.
If on a Mac, follow the above instructions except change the shortcut combination to cmd + shift + opt.
If the above solution does not work....
    Are you using a tablet?

  • Where can I find Background Eraser Tool CS6?

    Hello,
Im new to the photoshop program. Im having trouble locating the background erase tool. When the drop menu opens on the erase button, the only options are eraser tool, scissor tool, knife. Where can I find the background eraser tool?
    Thanks

Hi Travo, it sounds like you are not in Photoshop, but Illustrator!
This is what you would get when you open up the eraser tool in Photoshop CS6:
However, I imagine you are seeing this instead:
Illustrator doesn't have the Background Eraser Tool because it is not a photo-editing program, it edits vector artwork. Can you try to see if you have photoshop installed? This is what the icon of the program looks like:
