Erasing all data from Time Capsule

I bought a 500gb TC from Best Buy less than a month ago. Before purchasing I asked about the capacity. I explained to the salesperson that after a crash a year ago I was able to locate my most important files by connecting to my Powerbook and backed them up onto 6-8 DVDs. He said that was about 30gb. I also said that I had the Powerbook and a Mac Mini with about the same or a little less data that would be backed up. He assured me that 500gb would be plenty of room.
After backing up all three with no new data, 2/3 of the capacity has been used. I am planning on returning the 500gb and getting a 1T. Hopefully I can do so without incurring a restocking fee.
How do I do a clean erase of the Time Capsule before exchanging? I do not want any of my information left on it. Also how much time should I anticipate the process taking? Thanks in advance for all responses.

How do I do a clean erase of the Time Capsule before exchanging?
Go to Airport Utility --> Manual Setup --> Disks --> Highlight "Time Capsule Disk" on the left --> Click "Erase" on the right.
Rename the disk and select the level secure erasure.

  • Removing All Data From Time Capsule For Sale

I recently purchased a new 1 TB Time Capsule and have a 500 GB Time Capsule I plan to sell. What is the best way to restore the Time Capsule to how it came out of the box new? I would like to wipe my backup data off the hard drive and have the settings for the Wi-fi back to default settings so the new owner doesn't have any issues.
    Thanks for your help!

To delete everything on the Time Capsule's internal HD, use +*Airport Utility.+* Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.
To prevent your data from being recovered, choose +Zero Out Data.+ One pass is plenty; you only need multiple passes to try to prevent the CIA or NSA or the like from recovering it. And of course, if they really want it, they already have it .

  • How Do I Delete backup data from Time Capsule if have 2 computers on 1 TC?

I have been backing up 2 computers (one desktop/one laptop) to a 1TB Time Capsule. I have now added an external hard drive for the desktop computer and would like to delete that computer's backups from Time Capsule to free up space for the laptop computer. How do I delete the desktop computer's backup data from Time Capsule without disturbing the laptop back ups? Do I drag the desktop computer's backups.backupdb and sparsebundle to trash and empty?
    Thanks.

Thanks though I am still a bit confused as I had read NOT to delete via Finder, but via Disk Utility (erase). Does it make any difference?
You're probably referring to the advice never to change, move, or delete anything inside your backups via the Finder, as that can corrupt them.
A number of folks have tried to delete a single backup that way, and caused all sorts of troubles.
Deleting the entire sparse bundle is ok.

  • Where does restored data from time capsule get placed

Where does restored data from time capsule get placed?
For instance, is the data seamlessly placed where it was missing or corrupted, or does it enter a program under some separate "heading" in the program 1) if letter is restored to Mail, 2) if entire mailbox restored to Mail,  3) if single letter restored to Documents, 4) if several photos to iPhoto, 5) if one folder restored to desktop.

Cannot answer all your questions, but will answer regarding iPhoto.
You cannot restore individual photos to iPhoto, you must restore the entire iPhoto Library.
When you do this, you are given several options. See the shot below for details:
The restored library will be placed in the default location....the Pictures folder

  • Recovering data from Time Capsule after conversion from Snow Leopard to Lion

Had a problem with my iMac, which was running Snow Leopard O/S.  Data was backed up on Time Capsule using Time Machine, although recent back-ups had failed (but earlier back-ups had been OK).  Apple support determined that I needed to re-install the O/S and they walked me through it.  After blowing away all data (believing that once O/S reinstalled, could recover from Time Capsule), the reinstall failed.  Took to Apple store, where they installed Lion at my request.  Then tried to recover from Time Capsule, but couldn't do so.  Sparse file doesn't work (it shows 10GB, which is wrong as it had several hundred GB's before due to lots of photos).  Apple Support couldn't solve issue, believes it was corrupted with the last backup.  Ultimately recommended that I have professional data recovery service recover data from the iMac hard-drive (as opposed to Time Capsule).  Spoke to recovery service recommended by Apple, and it is very expensive (also, given the O/S reinstall, anything they recover will have new file names and no directory structure).  They also said getting data off the Time Capsule is even more difficult and expensive to recover.  I'm not a happy camper.
I would welcome any thoughts on what to do.  FWIW, I live in South Florida and there appear to be lots of data recovery companies locally, but Apple support had said that they have only a few authorized vendors that can do it without voiding warranty, so I'm reluctant to even call them.  Thanks.  Steve

    Your backups may be corrupted.
Try to repair them, via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Mount the sparse bundle by opening the TC in the Finder and double-clicking on the sparse bundle. Drag the sparse bundle into Disk Utility's sidebar, and do a +*Repair Disk*+ (not permissions) on it. If it finds errors it can't fix, run it again (and again), until it either fixes them all, or can't fix any more.

  • How can i format my MacBook Pro hard disk and recover my data from time capsule?

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro is running slow, more and more. Everything started with the "upgrade" to Lion.
Can I re-format my hard disk and recover from Time Capsule only the data and applications I really need (including Snow Leopard as OS, maybe)?
    Thanks

The problem is that it is a Western Digital 3.5 inch internal hard drive housed inside a hard drive caddy. So the only way to connect it to my computer is through a dock.

  • Erase all data from original iPhone

I've upgraded to the iPhone 3G and am in the process of selling the 1st generation. My cell service has been transferred to the new phone - the sim card that came with the 3G is now in the original phone. I want to be sure to all my data is erased. Since it's not an active phone, how do I do that? Can I take the sim from the 3G, install in the original and then erase all data?

If you are selling your 2G iphone, I may be interested. I just broke the screen of mine and found out that replacing it cost almost as much as a 3G. I don't want a 3G as AT&T charges more per month would also charge for texting. Thanks! You can contact me at [email protected]

  • How to erase one of the mac's time machine data from Time capsule?

I have formatted my mac book pro and reinstall it with a new username, and the TC couldn't find the old account data, now i am backup-ing the new account, but the old account waste me lots of space in TC, how can i access and delete it, so with the file sharing system in TC, do i need to make partions on the disk drive? i scare that if TC keep backup it will erase my share files
    thx

    Hifeljai,
You will see your Time Capsule in the "shared" portion of your Finder window. Click on it, and you will see the "sparsebundles" named according to your two different usernames. You can at this point delete the "old" one. However, it will likely be overwritten naturally sometime in the future. In addition, if you need to access anything from the "old" sparsebundle, you can double click on it which will mount it to the side menu of your finder window. You can then search for any items you may wish to recover.

  • Recovering data from Time Capsule

My computer died and I'm trying to retrieve my data from my Time Capsule. A friend loaned me their old Macbook (circa 2008) which has 120 GB capacity. (Like I said, it's old....) I set up the largest partition I could, but it's only 45 GB (37 GB available). I have the Time Capsule all set up but, when I ran Migration Assistant, I realized I need 176 GB to migrate everything. My music folder alone is 125 GB, so I can't even migrate that.
Are there any work-arounds that don't require me buying or locating another Mac with sufficient capacity for this migration? Can I set up an external hard drive and migrate all the data directly to that drive, bypassing the internal hard drive completely? Is it possible to download portions of the data piecemeal (copy it off, delete, repeat)?
    Thanks in advance!

  • How do I zero all data on Time Capsule?

I just got the new 2TB Time Capsule and I want to get rid of my previous 1TB one, but I can't figure out how to zero all data on that disk, and I of course don't want to sell my Time Capsule to a stranger with sensitive data on it. Does anyone know how to wipe out all the data on a Time Capsule?

Launch Airport Utility, double-click on your old Time Capsule in the left column, then click on "Disks" in the toolbar, click on the Time Capsule Disk on the left, then click on the "Erase..." button.

  • Retrieving iCal data from Time Capsule back up

My system crashed and onfortunatly i had to install a new system. Now i want my 'old' data back in iCal. What do i need to get back from my Time Capsule back up to get the data back in my iCal???
I already retrieved users -> myname -> library -> calendars but this has no effect at all.
    plsssssssssssss help me

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Try this:
Make a copy of the ~/Library/Calendars folder from your backup and put it on your Desktop.
Rename the folder 'Old.icbu' (without the quotes).
There will probably be a dialog confirming that you want to make this name change.
It should now look like an iCal backup file (which is actually a package).
Double click 'Old.icbu' on the Desktop.
(Hopefully) iCal will open and confirm that you want to revert all your calendars to this version.
Let me know how it goes.
    Best wishes
    John M
