Erasing All - Install Disc Uncooperative

I need to return my MacBook Pro to my previous employer and want to erase everything before doing so. Unfortunately, the install disc that came with it is allowing me to clean install. Every time I load the disc and hold down "c," it starts to boot, fiddles around for a bit, and then the screen goes dark (with a closing curtain) and tells me that I need to restart the computer. I've tried restarting through the Start Up Disc route in System preferences and launching the disc on the Desktop to install. I get the same response every time, and then I need to restart, hold the eject button, and wedge the disc out with a piece of cardboard or the whole process cycles again.
The only thing I can think of is that this computer is now running 10.5.8 and the install disc is some version of Tiger. But would this make a difference?
I really need to erase all of my personal data (already deleted the files) before giving this back. What can I do? I don't want to pay Apple to send me new install discs and I don't trust that my old employer will do it for me.

You are going about this the wrong way. Just boot from your Leopard installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menubar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select the computer's hard drive from the left side list, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window, set the format type to Mac OS Extended, Journaled, then click on the Security button. Select Zero Data (one-pass) and click on the OK button. Click on the Erase button. The process may take up to several hours depending upon the size of the drive.
The only version of Tiger you could use is the one that came on the original discs with the computer. A retail version of Tiger cannot boot an Intel Mac.

  • Install discs 10.4?

I have an iBook G4. I lost all install discs and need to reinstall os x. I would like the ilife as well as the marbleblast gold and world book inclusions (if possible). At minimal, I am going to need the two install discs and a disc for classic. Anyone know where I can get them? I can't find any on amazon... Thanks in advance!

If not, some of these places may have them:

There's a new menu entry in the latest version, allowing you to download all the extra content directly onto your hard drive, without having to keep inserting new DVDs etc. It's 19gb (compressed). If you have a normal/decent internet connection, you could reinstall your loops while you're busy doing something else. Or busy doing nothing.

Contact Apple (call AppleCare) and for a nominal fee the discs will be replaced.  You can do that or purchase Snow Leopard (still availble from Apple for $20) and do an erase and install of OS X making the machine like a new machine.

Do you have access to another Mac with a disk drive?  If so you can do it in one of two ways:
1 - on the Mac with the optical drive launch Disk Utility and make a disk image of the iLife 11 disk. Connect the two Macs together and transfer the disk image to your MacBook Air.  Mount the disk image and install from it.  I have my iLife disks saved that way for quick and easy reinstall when necessary.
2 - connect the two Mac together so you can access the MBA from the Mac with the disk drive. Insert the iLife disk, and install from the second Mac to the MBA.

    Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer.  After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab.  Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button.  Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button.  Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive.  If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive.  The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive.  After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Now complete the OS X installation.  At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer.  Instead just shut it off.  The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

I used utilities to source my 10.6 snow leopard install disc to my main hardrive, and now when I turn on my computer the apple with the spinning wheel stays on the screen and stuck like that. How do I fix it Help please. I already tried all the commands such as Command R, Holding down the Option key, C and holding down shift at the start up but nothing happens.
initialy All I was trying to do was downgrade 10.7 to 10.6 .

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

  • I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things.  And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad.  Here's the info on my IMac:

      Model Identifier:          iMac6,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          3 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM61.0093.B07
      SMC Version (system):          1.10f2

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew
Why do you feel you need to do this? That is such a 'Windows thing' to do!
And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad
Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.

  • My hard drive thinks it is the Ma OS X Install disc and will not erase. How might I start this repair over?

I'm not the sharpest crayon, and was getting frustrated by the fact that erasing my hard drive and reinstalling Snow Leopard and my applications would not get my computer to start up without the Mac OS X Install disc inserted. In the course of that, in Disk Utility, since none of the options were working and my computer would not recognize my backup drive, I ended up copying the Install disc as the source onto my one partition on my hard drive. Now, the computer starts up, but goes directly to the install proceedure. However, there is no drive to select to install Mac OS X to. Disk Utility won't allow for the option to erase the drive again. How do I make my computer usable again?

Can't do that. The intallation steps reach the point where you have to choose the disc to install to. There is no disc to choose on the screen. The space is empty. I cannot select anything to erase and install to.

  • Installing iOS 5 erases all previous data

Installation of iOS 5 erased all previous data on my iPad. Help! Prior to iCloud being in the picture, where were all my photos and documents backed up?
I am attempting to locate the files which vanished upon updating to iOS 5 - hundreds of pdf files, thousands of uploaded photos, screen shots, saved photos from web, ALL GONE. So were all my acquired apps, although those have been replaced - now I can begin or attempt to reconstitute the complex folder structure (notes, notes 2, notes 3, etc.) which grew over the last few iOS iterations, from too many apps stuffed into folders with strict limitations on contents. Tedious, but possible. Re all the photos, I'm still looking for clues: Is solid state storage similar to that on disk drives – does deleted information still reside on the drive, just not on the index?
Also, post updating, I am continually being prompted to authorize my computer, even though it is, and my Apple ID is intermittently rejected as if invalid, this is causing syncing challenges.
    Thanks.
Weary of chasing side effects of upgrading operating systems.

Same for me, when install was finished all was gone, but strange enough the disk space bar was indicating 14Go other and that was exactly my content "in app" without apps, photos, video and music. So this data was not accessible due to missing apps and all my photo/video/music was gone.
I had exactly the same issue last upgrade, and last time I decided to resync my media content and started to add apps one by one again, and by magic almost all the apps managed to find back their data in the 14Go "other" that was still in the IPad. But I had to redo a lot of work like Icon position, some settings, and some apps didn't restore well. Took me a very long time and effort to get back to a nominal situation.
So this time I deciced instead to click "Restore" before doing any sync and used the backup that was generated automaticly just before the upgrade to 5.0 (so still with version 4 of ths IOS)
The process started, the Ipad rebooted and firmware was then loaded again (still 5.0) and the 14Go data from the backup was reloaded also, and this time after this quite long step, itunes started to restore apps, music, photos and videos one by one ... was quite a very long process but at the end all was perfect, storage was back to 40 Go including my 14Go data and all photos, videos and apps, with all setting perfectly restored.
    Hope this help,
    Patrick

have iphone 3gs v 4,2.1 i want to upgrade to ios 5 i will erase all data, how can i install again the software, and now my device can not  be detect to my computer? what can i do? please help me..

You can not install iOS 5. It is no longer signed by Apple. You can only install the current version of iOS. For a 3GS, that's 6.1.3.
However... if you have 4.2.1 on your phone, odds are it is not a 3GS, it is a 3G. If that's the case, you've reached the end of the road for that. It can not run anything higher than 4.2.1.
